Updated: Hawks acquire Korver

Vivlamore filling in for M.C.

Kyle Korver is the latest shooter being stockpiled on an ever-changing Hawks’ roster.

A trade for Korver, a guard known for his 3-point shooting, was completed Monday. The Hawks  acquired the veteran from the Bulls for cash considerations.

“I appreciate the toughness and the competitive energy Kyle brings to the game every night, and we’re very excited to add

him to our team.” Danny Ferry, Hawks President of Basketball Operations/GM, said in a statement released by the team.  “Adding him makes shooting an even greater strength for our club.”

The deal was several days in the making. Korver was in Atlanta for a physical on Saturday.

Korver was owed a $500,000 guarantee of his $5 million non-guaranteed salary for 2012-13 by the Bulls by Sunday.

“We led the NBA in wins two years in a row, and (I) loved the personalities and chemistry we had,” Korver told the Chicago Tribune Friday when news of the potential trade first surfaced. “The bond we had was unique. You always feel you could’ve done more, but everybody on our team gave it all we had and there’s at least some satisfaction in that.”

In 65 games for the Bulls last season, Korver averaged 8.1 points in 22.6 minutes per game. He was 10th in the NBA in 3-point percentage at .435 (118-for-271).

The Hawks have added shooters Lou Williams, Devin Harris, Anthony Morrow and first-round pick John Jenkins during the offseason.

Korver, 31, was a second-round pick (No. 51) by the Nets in the 2003 draft. He was traded to the 76ers, where he spent his first four-plus seasons. He also played for Jazz before playing the past two seasons with the Bulls.

Dwight Howard’s agent insists Howard will enter free agency

By Matt Moore | Senior NBA and Olympics Blogger
July 20, 2012 11:27 am ET

When reports surfaced Thursday that Dwight Howard had decided he would re-sign with the Lakers if traded to L.A., there was a lot of skepticism. Howard hasn’t exactly been the most stable of mind when it comes to this decision, flipping back and forth on whether to sign his opt-out waiver before finally committing to the Magic for another year (and then requesting a trade again within two months).

CBSSports.com’s Ken Berger reported Thursday night that the trade talk remains largely where they’ve been for months: stuck.

And as far as publicly, the Howard camp isn’t changing its stance. Howard wants the freedom of choice and plans to exercise his right to it. From ESPN.com:

“Dwight’s position has remained unchanged since the end of this past season,” said Dan Fegan of LaGardere Unlimited. “He fully intends to explore free agency at the end of next season, regardless of what team trades for him, including Brooklyn.”

via Agent — Dwight Howard wont sign extension with any team, will explore free agency – ESPN Los Angeles.

OK, so there’s some double speak that still has yet to sink in with most media and fans, so let’s go through it one more time.

The only way to assure the most money possible for Howard is for him to enter free agency. The years and raise limit on an extension makes it a virtual impossibility that he would sign such a thing instead of opting out and then likely re-signing with whatever team has his bird rights at the time, granting him a fifth year vs. the four possible with another team.

So he’s going to enter free agency no matter what. Deron Williams took exactly two meetings this summer, and were an extension in any way the logical choice financially, he likely would have taken it.

But the key here is whether he’ll test free agency.

It’s wholly different for Howard to enter free agency with the specific goal of acquiring the five-year max-deal provided under the CBA, and a much different one for him to “test” free agency. If Howard starts taking meetings with the Lakers having no leverage outside of the fifth year, things could get bad. The sign-and-trade option that allowed LeBron James and Chris Bosh to get their max-max deals in 2010 goes away in 2013. So Howard will not be able to join the Nets under any circumstances once he hits free agency.

But the mere threat of a Dallas, or Golden State, or any other team that clears space being able to woo him is enough to give hangups in the deal.

Which is exactly what Fegan could want by issuing that release.

Howard’s camp are desperate to get him to Brooklyn as they lose leverage with Brooklyn having committed so much money and so many years to so many players, and these other offers put more pressure. The only way that Howard can force his way to Brooklyn is if there are no other optios, because Rob Hennigan took a look at what the Nets coud offer and if he’s sane, threw up in a trash can. So Howard has to eliminate the interest from other suitors, or Howard may be forced to cave.

The Dwightmare drags on.

Dwight has been a cancer to Orlando. He is becoming a cancer to any team in the NBA that is interested in him. Apparently he is the problem. LA Lakers are masters at getting stars, yet they have had no luck with Dwight. Does he think that he is larger than LA? What about other cities, how dare they think that they have the ability to satify the greatest player in history (in his own mind)? Atlanta is a mere hole in the wall, it is not nearly large enough for the biggest ego this side of Lebron’s talentz.

Nevermind that both Finals teams played more small ball than not. Oops. Inconvenient fact. Sorry.
——-

Wow. Just wow.

6′11 230 Durant
6′8 260 James
6′8 225 Smith

Who’s really going small in the finals? Not only is Josh not as big as those 2, Josh Smith isn’t as good shooting as either James or Durant. Blocking shots rebounding and transition. Like Iguodala. That’s like the 76ers putting Iguodala as a stretch 4 because he grew an inch.
——-

PGS
And thats why the Hawks lose. Did you see how porous the Knicks defense was without Amare (a reputed bad defender)?? Just size to take up space and wrestle inside with Josh. (and the added defensive boards) Melo likely went for 30+ (in that game) but it wasn’t enough because the Hawks for once had the size advantage…

Where’s DUI when we need him? The Hawks WON the very game you are referencing.
No irony there. No wonder I tend to scroll when you post. Same ol’ sh_t over and over:
“We have to go big to win!!!!!! ”
——–

So all we have to do is convince the Knicks and all the other teams to amnesty their PFs and put their SFs at the 4. Then the Hawks won’t have to go big to match up.

No irony there Sautee,

Dwight Howard can test the market all he wants, but if another team trades for him now they will have his Bird rights, and he is not likely to walk away from $25mil.

The hawks had a chance to acquire Rashad Lewis or OJ Mayo and both of them are gone. OJ Mayo has signed with the Mavs and Rashad signed with another team. Had the hawks acquired both of them, the Hawks would have won the world title this upcoming season.

I think people are going to have to come back to reality, but we’re taking a step backwards this season not far back like people think, but it’s going to be backwards that’s certain.

Again while everything looks great on paper it don’t mean a damn thing till the season gets started right now Miami Heat and Boston C’s look like World Beaters, but it don’t mean anything until the season starts and eventually the playoffs get under way next season.

Danny Ferry,

I doubt that you visit the AJC blog, but if you do, you need to look over this trade. The trade will not be legal until September 11 when the players from the Joe Johnson deal can be traded. Also, you may have to get the 2.2 trade exception from the Magic in the B. Bass trade to make it work for ATL.

This is a 4 team trade that involves Dwight Howard. The teams involved are the Magic, Lakers, Hawks, and 76′ers. I believe that every team gets what they want and need in their current situation. The Lakers get Howard, the Magic get expiring contracts and cap space for this season, the Hawks get Bynum and Iguodala, and the 76′ers get Horford and two back up guards. Look at the link below:

Hawks Fans,

I understand that the trade that I proposed in the above comment is far fetched. If the Hawks could pull that off, sign Ivan, Scott, Benson, and J. Taylor, this would be their line up:

PG-Teague/Harris/Taylor
SG-L Williams/Jenkins
SF-Iguodala/Korver
PF-J Smith/I Johnson/Scott
C-Bynum/Vucevic/Benson

Can you imagine the Hawks going into 2012-13 with that line up! Wow! That would be fun!

He does not

@ Hoops

Iggy and Lou are not buddies that’s the main reason we were able to sign him I doubt we want to sign him, and make Lou angry.

As for the D-league liking Scott, Jenkins, Benson(def invite to training camp), and Taylor.

I think something has snapped in Benson I don’t think he liked being called soft I haven’t seen him be soft for the most part in the Summer league, and while it’s easy to get starry eyed and what not you got to like what you see from him so far.

Yeah, one of the most interesting things for me to watch this upcoming season is to find out how good Joe really is. I don’t think there’s any question the Hawks are going to be worse defensively with Morrow and Jenkins taking most of his minutes, but if they end up doing as well or better offensively it’s a pretty severe indictment of Joe as a player. We’ll see.
