Kyle Korver is the latest shooter being stockpiled on an ever-changing Hawks’ roster.
A trade for Korver, a guard known for his 3-point shooting, was completed Monday. The Hawks acquired the veteran from the Bulls for cash considerations.
“I appreciate the toughness and the competitive energy Kyle brings to the game every night, and we’re very excited to add
him to our team.” Danny Ferry, Hawks President of Basketball Operations/GM, said in a statement released by the team. “Adding him makes shooting an even greater strength for our club.”
The deal was several days in the making. Korver was in Atlanta for a physical on Saturday.
Korver was owed a $500,000 guarantee of his $5 million non-guaranteed salary for 2012-13 by the Bulls by Sunday.
“We led the NBA in wins two years in a row, and (I) loved the personalities and chemistry we had,” Korver told the Chicago Tribune Friday when news of the potential trade first surfaced. “The bond we had was unique. You always feel you could’ve done more, but everybody on our team gave it all we had and there’s at least some satisfaction in that.”
In 65 games for the Bulls last season, Korver averaged 8.1 points in 22.6 minutes per game. He was 10th in the NBA in 3-point percentage at .435 (118-for-271).
The Hawks have added shooters Lou Williams, Devin Harris, Anthony Morrow and first-round pick John Jenkins during the offseason.
Korver, 31, was a second-round pick (No. 51) by the Nets in the 2003 draft. He was traded to the 76ers, where he spent his first four-plus seasons. He also played for Jazz before playing the past two seasons with the Bulls.

Jordan Taylor should get more minutes vs the Trail Blazers. Could end up being a good backup at PG and would give the Hawks more reason to trade either Harris or Teague.

The Bulls w/o DRose, maybe for the season. Also w/o Brewer, Korver, and Watson. Trying to ditch Rip also. Noah hasn’t been able to practice this summer due to injury. Boozer another year older.
And didn’t the Pacers lose Collison?
Sixers lose Brand and Lou.
Now on the above list, I didn’t see the Nets or the Wiz – both look to be improved.
I think the Cavs, Pistons, and Raptors will be improved also. Casey had the Raps playing tough ball the last half of last season.
I do agree that the Celts may be better – great job building that team by Ainge. But Pierce and Garnett are another year older. But getting Lee – just wow – good pick up by them.
Right now in the East I have it Miami, Nets, Boston, Knicks and then a free for all – ATL could be from 3-10 really.
Pick up Delfino or Pietrus, I feel better about this team

Knicks lose Fields and Lin – get Felton – but really how I feel about them depends on Amare’s injuries. If he’s declining, then I don’t like their chances.
‘Melo seems to stay hurt alot as well.
A 4th seed would not surprise me. Neither would a 10th.
Alot depends on injuries, per usual.

Rooting for Houston to be the 8th seed in the West – we get their 1st and 2nd picks if that happens.

” Please help me to remeber that last debate we have had when you have been correct and maybe I will…”
Rod,
Always been right. The fact that you don’t acknowledge it does mean that red turns blue. It stays red.
Advanced stats show that Lou is a better all round contributor than Nick and a better defender. Not saying that he is good, but tries a bit more than Nick.

“Have you considered that maybe Nick Young is with his third team in three seasons because he wasn’t wanted on a lottery team or a contender? Lou Williams is a vastly better player than Nick Young.”
Huh? I guess that is why the Clippers (a contender) traded for him last year at the break. I guess that is why Philly (a playoff team) signed him.

Please name one instance when you were right.
How can you measure who tries more? Advanced stats show that Josh was the best defensive player in the league last year. Does that mean he was the best defensive player? I never stated who the better all around player is, I stated that Nick Young can fill the role that Lou Williams had on the Philly team.

So Anthony Randolph gone, Courtney Lee all but gone….I guess Korver was our guy? We could use another SF. I’m not cool with rolling the dice with Korver and Sy, though I can see Smith playing the position some (LD will try it, watch) and then Morrow may get some run there as well (despite being undersized).
We have become the Warriors. With more defense, of course.

Maybe Danny will try to pry away one more player from Chicago, Taj Gibson. This guy can score and defend. One of few guys who could give Lebron or Durant “trouble” Bulls need another point guard and shooter…

“I gotta say at this point I keep Benson over Collins. But I can see the case the other way also. But I think ZaZa and Petro can hold the fort at the C, with Al playing some minutes there, and also maybe Ivan depending on the matchup (like against Chucky Hayes!).”
If Benson makes the team, it’s probably a good idea to also have some veteran who can play good position defense. Someone like Collins would complement Benson well.
I’d rather have both and cut Petro, to be honest.

“Yes. Nick Young is just as good as Lou Williams scoring wise and he is bigger. Plus they have Doug Collins, and we have LD. I will also state that I am not concerned with regular season records etiher.”
I gotta agree with vava on this. Young is at best equal to Lou Williams, but they are swapping out Elton Brand for Kwame Brown. That is a HUGE downgrade.

It is way too early, what with rosters not being set and all, but if I had to pick the East playoff teams right now based on the current rosters (and assuming Orlando doesn’t enter the season with Dwight on the roster) it would look something like this:
Miami
Indiana
Brooklyn
Boston
Washington
Chicago
Atlanta
New York
I don’t think there’s any question about Miami at #1, and with everything I have read saying that Rose is set to miss at least a third of the season I’m pretty sure Indiana will cruise to a #2 seed. Everything beyond that is fluid. I don’t think Brooklyn will be nearly as good as advertised, but there aren’t any other really imposing teams in the East, especially when you consider that the Celtics will probably put it on cruise control through the regular season again.

Washington at 5?
Why do you have Washington at 5? I’d agree with all of that but having Washington at 5. I’d say the Hawks, as currently constructed, have a better chance of getting the 5 seed then the Wizards.

The Wizards last year were 7-4 with Nene in the lineup. Add Okafor, Ariza, and Beal to that lineup, factor in some pretty nice big man depth, and I think they are in line for the biggest improvement in the standings of any team in the league, particularly if Jordan Crawford and Chris Singleton show improvement as well.

“Notice when Amare was out that the ppg went crazy and the Hawks beat the Knicks. Josh vs Carmelo btw.”
With Josh AND Melo playing PF, btw.
….
And thats why the Hawks lose. Did you see how porous the Knicks defense was without Amare?? Just size to take up space and wrestle inside with Josh. Melo likely went for 30+ but it wasn’t enough because the Hawks for once had the size advantage…

Scary but true. Esp. if Smoove goes down, then we’re definitely the Warriors as currently constructed. Fun team to watch, but don’t hope for much more. At the very least though, I could see being as good as last year as currently constructed. We’ve got scorers from 1-10, so at the very least, we’ll have a deep bench and be as good as we were last year.
Worst case as currently constructed: 8 seed.

I wouldn’t mind having Darko as our 3rd or 4th option at center for the vet min. We could do a lot worse for that role. But I’m with Danny Ferry on the player development and would prefer bringing along Kito Benson for that role if some other team doesn’t pick him up first.

Najeh,
I gotta disagree. I think Washington becomes the new Milwaukee Bucks next year, dangling around the 7th, 8th, or 9th seed fighting for a playoff spot.
Maybe they get better with time, but I think 5th is too big of a jump considering they didn’t add anything more than a promising rookie and B minus-level talent. Wall was a bit overrated as a potential superstar PG, and is really just a pretty good PG.
I also think Ariza is overrated. Decent player for his position, but overrated.
But I’ll take a slap on the wrist if I turn out to be wrong about all this.

The Wiz will definitely have a well balanced line up with Wall-Beal-Ariza-Okafor-Nene though. But no true all-stars. Not even should’ve-been-All-Stars like J. Smoove. Which will suit them fine if they’re going for the Detroit Pistons model (snickers slightly).

I predict that the Hawks are going to have a chance to trade for Howard after September 11 when the Hawks expiring contracts, that were attained in the Joe Johnson trade, are eligible to be traded. I have not seen a deal that seems to really excite Orlando. If there has been one proposed, they would have already taken it. Orlando is not going to trade Dwight unless a team or teams are willing to take on some of their bad contracts. Be patient Hawks fans. Ferry is not done with this 2012-13 roster yet!

A team that has Nene and Okafor down low, with Wall in the backcourt, and some other nice, young pieces, is going to be a load.
Wall’s 3rd season, is probably his breakout season one would guess. And if Okafor has anything left in the tank, I look for the Wiz to be a .500 team, maybe better.
Beal may need a year or two to acclimate. He’s young still.

The only reason I would keep Petro over Collins, is because at this point in his career, Collins plays 6 games, goes down injured for two or three weeks. Plays 8 games, gone two weeks.
I don’t trust him as a 2nd C. 3rd of 4th yes, but he doesn’t have enough left to play minutes every game. And if ZaZa went down, def. not enough to play C 25-30 minutes a nite for more than 2 weeks at the time.
Petro is younger and fresher, and maybe shows some signs of life.

If Dwight’s going to be a FA after the season, the Nets, Lakers, Knicks don’t have the cash to sign him.

Don’t get me wrong — I don’t think they are anywhere close to contending for a title. I just think they have enough front court depth and good defenders at several positions to be an elite defensive team, which should be enough for them to be assured a playoff spot.
Whether they become anything more than the Hawks were the last few years will depend on whether the rookie Beal and the 22 year old Wall live up to their draft position. If Wall actually becomes Derrick Rose 2.0, like he was hyped to be, and Beal develops into a legit #2 scoring option, I can see that team contending a couple of years from now.

Najeh,
I looked over the Wizards roster again to double check…maybe I missed something.
Names that jumped out at me:
Wall
Beal
Okafor
Nene
Crawford
Singleton
Ariza
I take the whole “7-4 with Nene” with a grain of salt. Just from the roster alone, I see them as high as possibly a 7. Don’t under estimate the Knicks. Yes they lost Lin (who I still think is overly hyped) but gained Kidd, Felton, and Camby. The Bulls are still somewhat good but hard to tell. 1-4 I can agree completely.
5-8
5. Atlanta
6. New York
7. Wizards
8. Bulls

I do think that on a less dysfunctional team than what the Wizards had the last several years, Wall will seriously contend for an All Star spot. I am not sold on his point guard skills, but he is still a very good player.

They are pretty similar to the Bulls, if you think about it. Offense runs through the point guard, one offensive-minded big man and one defensive-minded big man, two quality big men off the bench, and a solid defender at SF. The major differences are that Wall is nowhere near as good as Rose yet and Beal is likely better from day one than anyone the Bulls have had at SG during the Rose era. We’ll see if they can put it together, but in a conference that is pretty wide open once you get past the Heat, I like their chances.

I know the salaries don’t work, but I’m not mortgaging the house on a guy there’s a good chance I don’t keep.
Now if we felt like Bird rights were enough to get him to sign, then fine, trade Al and some more – but if he’s going to the Mavs or Celts anyway, I’m not giving up too much for a 1 year rental.

If the Bulls lose Asik, and the Chicago guys are saying DRose is out until at least the All Star game – and he’s getting counsel by the Bulls to skip the season, with what they’re already missing from last year, I’m just not seeing the Bulls this year.
Because they have a good Coach in TT, they may pull off 50 wins, but I don’t see them as a serious contender in the playoffs.
