Updated: Hawks acquire Korver

Vivlamore filling in for M.C.

Kyle Korver is the latest shooter being stockpiled on an ever-changing Hawks’ roster.

A trade for Korver, a guard known for his 3-point shooting, was completed Monday. The Hawks  acquired the veteran from the Bulls for cash considerations.

“I appreciate the toughness and the competitive energy Kyle brings to the game every night, and we’re very excited to add

him to our team.” Danny Ferry, Hawks President of Basketball Operations/GM, said in a statement released by the team.  “Adding him makes shooting an even greater strength for our club.”

The deal was several days in the making. Korver was in Atlanta for a physical on Saturday.

Korver was owed a $500,000 guarantee of his $5 million non-guaranteed salary for 2012-13 by the Bulls by Sunday.

“We led the NBA in wins two years in a row, and (I) loved the personalities and chemistry we had,” Korver told the Chicago Tribune Friday when news of the potential trade first surfaced. “The bond we had was unique. You always feel you could’ve done more, but everybody on our team gave it all we had and there’s at least some satisfaction in that.”

In 65 games for the Bulls last season, Korver averaged 8.1 points in 22.6 minutes per game. He was 10th in the NBA in 3-point percentage at .435 (118-for-271).

The Hawks have added shooters Lou Williams, Devin Harris, Anthony Morrow and first-round pick John Jenkins during the offseason.

Korver, 31, was a second-round pick (No. 51) by the Nets in the 2003 draft. He was traded to the 76ers, where he spent his first four-plus seasons. He also played for Jazz before playing the past two seasons with the Bulls.

Derrick Brown is UFA now, yet another SF I would like the team to pickup.

The team needs a slashing defender type and Brown absolutely fits that at 6′8 230 with incredible athletic ability. He is the main guy I would target right now.

Buddy G..

doesn’t surprise me regarding Stephen A. He was sooooooo sure that his mighty Knicks would match. When Houston went the poison pill route, he started to throw dirt on Lin’s name. Saying his ’sources’ are questioning Lin’s motivation, and how Lin has gotten full of himself blah blah. Just another loud New Yorker with a mic.

The way I see the summer league team is Benson makes the team, Jenkins has made the team, and Taylor will get invited to fall camp. The ball is in his court.

@Hoops

Jenkins is the only sure thing off the summer league. Taylor and Benson will be invited, not sure they make it or not. If Atlanta decied to add a veteran big man, then maybe Benson doesnt make it. Scott is a longshot too I think to make it. He didnt do anything that really stood out.

Yeah bigdave… the Knicks told Lin to go out and let the market establish his value, then when he did that they start putting out these stories about how Lin wouldn’t play hurt and he “only cares about the money” when this guy doubled MSG’s stock value while making $700k and sleeping on a couch. Javale 4 years for 44 mill. Wow, there have been some crazy salaries getting tossed around.

And it looks like the Bulls are not going to sign Asik – so Houston has another one.

Orlando gets Varejo and 3 1st picks in the new Dwight trade? I’m thinking ATL has a better offer than that.

Cavs get Bynum – and the Lakers get Dwight.

Orlando can’t find a taker to dump Hedo however.

Don’t you think Houston wishes they’d have just kept Lin in January for $473,000.00?

Just goes to show you that there are alot of guys that thrive in different opportunities.

I wish I knew which blogger kept coming on here last year and early this year begging the Hawks to get Lin. It wasn’t a regular – but he sold me on the idea. Before Linsanity. Had great advanced stats on the guy in limited minutes.

I’m thinking with the lack of Bigs in the League right now, Benson is a lock to be somewhere if not in ATL, as a 3rd C, and maybe some minutes at PF also.

He’s only 24, so in a couple of years, and 10-15 lbs later, i can really see him contributing to a team – in a rotation 10-15 minutes a nite or something.

Just looking over the Rockets roster – and what the Lakers are offering for Dwight – and the Mavs, who have no players to offer

ATL sure has the best package for Dwight.

And what will Teague demand in this type atmosphere of spending? ZaZa also.

I could see ATL playing hardball with Teague, having him backup Harris, then lowballing him on the decreased production, then signing him cheap for 4 years, letting Harris walk, and having an awesome Pg for the next 4 years in his prime.

I hope they don’t do that to the poor kid. But it is business.

Poor in a relative sense – 2+ mill per year is pretty good money…

Maybe Ferry is offering Harris and ZaZa, along with both 1st picks next season, and 1 or 2 more for Dwight.

If he could keep Al in the trade process, and Teague – just wow – a frontline of Dwight, Al, and Josh would be nearly unstoppable.

And with Teague, Lou, Morrow, Jenkins in the backcourt – again, just wow.

And I’m not sure if we keep Teague and Harris, we sign a 3rd PG – Lou can function as the 3rd PG just fine I think.

Too me it’s beginning to look like we have Josh penciled in at the 3. Didn’t a rival scout say that ATL would make the next step when we put Josh at the 3?

And if Josh stays at 225, I think he can play the 3. Nobody says the 3 has to play away from the basket on offense. He can still go low post, while Al does pick and pop or PNR, and ZaZa does the dirty work down low.

And Josh can still play close enough to the basket on D to help with D. Maybe

SteveW I didn’t have a lot of stats on Lin but I know me and Najeh both saw him at summer league two years ago when he went toe to toe with John Wall. I know I mentioned him on this blog as someone the Hawks should get, but didn’t think they’d ever sign him or that LD would ever play him.

I never saw Linsanity coming. I thought how well Lin played against Wall said more about how overrated Wall was than about how good Lin was. When Lin blew up, it taught me to trust the eye test. Wall’s not bad, he just can’t shoot and he’s a below average man-to-man defender (see last year when he got dunked on by Lin, who is not the fastest or most athletic guy in the league).

But at the same time, when Lin had that game against NJ when it all started, I wasn’t surprised to see him score 20+. He just needed the exact right situation to get his moment to shine.

Frontcourt: Ivan, ZaZa, Al, and Josh – All quality players. Petro actually looked like a basketball player a few games last season. Maybe he’s getting it at 26 years of age.

Teague, Harris, Lou, Morrow, Jenkins, Korver, maybe Stevenson – all decent to very decent BB players.

How can I not like this team?

We may surprise some folks. Even w/o Dwight – Al and Josh may emerge as Top 20-25 players in the League.

A couple of years ago, Al was ranked 25 and Josh 43 by ESPN, and that was before Josh’s monster season last year.

SteveW

BG – I think Orlando may do the 2 PG model, or use Harris or Teague as a 3rd G, like Philly did Lou, and we used to with Jamal.

Jameer is getting older.

Steve, I agree. The things people aren’t considering is Harris & L. Williams is better than Joe and Marvin collectively. Then you figure Jenkins and Korver will be better than Kirk and Willie Green was. And you add Horford back to the roster, and you should see the team stay afloat in a conference that has improved on paper, but has proven nothing on the court yet. Chicago, Orlando, and possibly Boston may each be worse this season. So even if Brooklyn, Indiana, and New York improve The Hawks should still be looking at a playoff spot, and if they stay healthy, this is the deepest team, they’ve had in a long time. Teague, Harris, Williams, Josh, Horford, and Korver (also Jenkins) can each get you buckets. Teague, Josh, Stephenson, Ivan, and Zaza can each play wonderful defense and make the opponent uncomfortable.

I do not see this team winning lower than 45 games, especially if they add one more serviceable swing man along with Benson probably.

SG KHinrich(6.6PPG) and SF JJohnson(18.8PPG) combined for 25.8PPG last yr. SG AMorrow(12PPG), PG DHarris(12PPG), and SG/PG LWilliams(14.8PPG), combined for 38.8PPG last yr. I don’t think we’ll have any trouble replacing Hinrich and JJs combined averages, let alone JJs alone. I believe KKorver will be just as effective scoring off the bench as Marvin was.

We’ll definitely get better scoring, rebounding, and DEF, from JPetro and LWilliams than we got from Dampier and Collins. We’ll also be quicker, faster, more athletic, and deeper, with the overall ability to play uptempo, play more team oriented OFF and DEF, and run double teams more often and more successfully than ever before.

How in the devil can anyone think this team will not be as good, if not better, than last yrs team?

@NotBillWalton (who for some reason has broken some NBA signings this summer) says the Lakers-Magic-Cavs three-way Dwight trade is done. Bynum to Cavs, Varejao and draft picks to the Magic.

Horford should be regarded highly in comparison with Varejão.

On a different subject:

I think we should re-sign Collins.

He could “coach” Benson and Jordan Williams in to main aspects:

1. Post defense;
2. How to get fat (for Benson) and how to slim down (for Jordan Williams).

:-D

Najeh Davenpoop

The thing that makes me think that trade might not go through (at least as reported) is that I find it hard to believe that the Magic would rather have Varejao and draft picks over Bynum, even if one of those picks ends up in the lottery from Cleveland. Even if Bynum doesn’t feel like staying in Orlando long term, he alone is going to get you more in a subsequent trade than Varejao + picks.

vava74

Benson is averaging, in 24.8 minutes per game:

14.7 ppg, 7 reb, 2 blks while shooting .575 from the floor (an impressive figure since it has been achieved with many jumpshots in the mix).

Jae Evolution

Won’t both Bynum and Howard have to agree to an extension before this goes through? And are we really putting it past Dan Gilbert to pull some scumbag tactic at the last moment to break this deal off?

Also I’ve lost all hope in the Magic actually getting a good deal in return for Howard. Every proposed deal I’ve seen for them I’ve scoffed at, all except the Rockets one where they would give up all assets but that isn’t happening.

I’ll simply wait until the deal actually happens because a lot of things actually have to fall in place before this deal goes through and I’m still skeptical on BOTH Bynum and Howard agreeing to sign an extension.

Today should be interesting. Orlando trying to get Houston to improve their offer. Dwight trying to get Houston to just let him go to LA. All I know is that if Verejao and a few picks gets you Dwight Howard, then something is wrong.

“…if Verejao and a few picks gets you Dwight Howard, then something is wrong.”

It also means that Horford, Teague a couple of picks will get him as well.

I think that my theory is correct: Ferry has told Hennigan what he is willing to offer and they have agreed that, if nothing better is put on the table, ORL will accept the trade with us.

I am 90% confident that this is the case. A conditional trade has been agreed, subject to our offer being beaten by others, which is unlikely, IMO.

Cleveland has their own 2013 draft pick to offer, plus Miami’s 2013 pick, plus Sactown’s 2013 top-13 protected first rd pick (remains at least top-10 protected through 2017, when it becomes a 2nd rd pick).

I’m not sure where Cleveland’s pick will fall if they get Bynum, but the Heat will pick within the last 3 picks of the first rd for sure, and you still may not see Sactown’s pick for a year or two.

I think I would rather ask for 4 of Houston’s recent picks: Lamb, Parsons, White, and DMont. Put those 4 with Nicholson and O’Quinn that we’re just drafted, and see what you’ve got.

three different takes denied on the knicks trade from very different perspectives:

so i’ll break it up and see what happens.

it was quoted in spite of conjecture that lin preferred knicks. a big thing to say now going to a new employer. probably true feelings and stephen a got it wrong again. anyway here goes.

nice tid bit:

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/jeremy-lin-knicks-james-dolan-betrayed-deceived-161820611–nba.html

seems it was more dolans emotional side getting in the way of a rational decision though i would have wished it was a strictly business decision which i could agree with and him saying well houston wins on the one but let them see where they are i three years on this one. isnt that what we are going to do?.

doc

July 19th, 2012
9:08 am

next paragraaph:

as far as dolans? he continues to be among the two worst owners in the nba, ranking along side of don sterling for opposite reasons. one held his money and continued to have the worst teams for decades in the best market in the country and the other threw good money at bad because he was stupid and had a serious problem in figuring out who had the qualities he needed to build a sound team and then get out of their way n achieving it. he only shows by this article that he hasnt changed or learned with only his very short recent fortunes of getting back to the playoffs for the first time in over a decade to show for his efforts, he made tons of of the 800k investment in lin, it may have saved his franchise for the time being. we will see.

doc

July 19th, 2012

final paragraph:

this article also points out as much houston played the game to win what it wanted if it was automatic that the knicks were going to match. they were playing according to the new cba rules with an emphasis on the tax liabilities with each signing to make the signing even more painful for the knicks to swallow. lin was caught in the middle as he couldnt accept less to stay in new york even if he wanted to due to the cba. stupid isnt it to most of us to accept less anyway to do the same job? he was expected to go with the flow and do what he had to do as a member of a collective bargaining agreement, take the most money which by my bets and the union was pleased as punch about it as the system was working put into play after a hold out. dolans anger is misplaced and should be at the agreement and or stern for taking away his toy of spending more and getting less saving him from himself. sound like an addiction or what? this is true even if jr and carmelo felt differently. also, if the game were being played in their own marketing enhanced to their own bottom line shoes, i imagine they would accept the money. few would say otherwise.

Third Wheel!

Looks like The Lakers need a third or fourth team to make the D12 deal happen. Someone has to absorb The Magic’s bad contracts. It stands to reason, The Hawks would run into the same sticking point. In the quiet Hawks rumors, where is a third team even mentioned? I don’t think we are a serious negotiator for the services of one, Mr. Howard.

Oh well.
