Updated: Hawks in talks about Korver

Vivlamore filling in for MC.

The Hawks are in “serious discussions” with the Bulls to acquire guard Kyle Korver, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. While talks continue, no deal has been completed.

The Chicago Tribune reported that a deal is done, via the Timberwolves, pending Korver passing a physical. However, the person familar with the situation said the talks have not progressed to that point.

The Bulls had to either guarantee Korver’s $5 million option for the 2012-13 season or waive him and pay $500,000 by Sunday.

In 65 games for the Bulls last season, Korver averaged 8.1 points in 22.6 minutes per game. Kover, 31, was a second-round pick (No. 51) by the Nets in the 2003 draft. He was traded to the 76ers, where he spent his first four-plus seasons. He also played for Jazz before playing the past two seasons with the Bulls.

(Sigh) Joe cost too much;…..so he had to go. Joe was also an excellent ballplayer with a great shot who knew how to score. Now he locked into a team that really wants his telent and will know how to make the pieces work…….

OBVIOUSLY, the Hawks are going to be affected by this loss and we haven’t replaced him.

Counter to this, San Antonio took marginal players and trained them in a system where they could make significant contributions and play with confidence. The key here was understanding potential and actually HAVING A SYSTEM. If Ferry brings this to the Hawks, it’s a giant plus.

These are the factors. We don’t know how they are going to work out. Hopefully, they won’t work out with Josh Smith taking jump shots from 25 feet when we’re down one point with 15 seconds left n the game. Hopefully, Josh will continue to be the productive baller he REALLY IS and we’ll work someone free to take that last shot.

NBA Trade Rumors: Dwight Howard Would Make Atlanta Hawks Instant Title Contender

The Atlanta Hawks have become a forgotten factor in the many scenarios that would remove Dwight Howard from the organization that drafted him in 2004.

The disaffected franchise player still doesn’t want to play for the Orlando Magic, but his final destination isn’t much clearer today than it was before the trade deadline. With talks between the Magic and Brooklyn Nets stalled and perhaps, over for good, the stage is set for other suitors to enter the fray and make their bids.

Much of the attention has focused on the Houston Rockets’ ability to send Orlando a bevy of attractive assets and the possibility of the Los Angeles Lakers capitalizing on a three-team deal.

Don’t count the Hawks out just yet, though.

Hi-res-142039476_crop_650×440 Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Michael Cunningham, the Hawks have quietly talked to the Magic amidst all the more highly publicized negotiations:

The Hawks have engaged the Magic in trade talks involving Howard, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions. That person did not want to be identified because the teams involved have not discussed the negotiations publicly.

Atlanta could offer some combination of center Al Horford, point guard Jeff Teague and the usual combination of cap relief and draft picks.

Theoretically, Josh Smith would be available too, but his friendship with Howard makes him one of the more attractive reasons for the big man to stick around. Chances are he won’t be going anywhere.

That means at the very least, Atlanta would have arguably the most athletic and defensively potent frontline in the league.

Hi-res-136526699_crop_650×440 Could Jeff Teague be included in a deal for Dwight Howard?
Streeter Lecka/Getty Images

Additionally, the acquisition of Devin Harris means Atlanta could part with either Harris or Teague while retaining at least one solid point guard.

Howard’s supporting cast wouldn’t be amazing, but it may be good enough to make some serious noise in the postseason. Whatever role players remained like Anthony Morrow and Ivan Johnson would be helpful, and the Hawks would find other avenues to add talent.

They could absorb players like Jason Richardson and Glen Davis to spare Orlando the cap burden, or they could use their own cap space to sign some help for Howard.

The first season together might not be immaculate, but the organization would be well-positioned to compete immediately and improve quickly thereafter.

Sure, we haven’t heard much about the Hawks snagging Dwight just yet, but maybe we should have.

All that Talk about Grandad, Sundusky ,is just that …talk. Sundusky is in prison. People make statements without any evidence. Grandad is not in prison.

Make sure your facts are straight as to who did what. Id like to be on record saying I don’t believe that grandad was involved in the activities. Any one who is saying otherwise has an obligation to bring that evidence forward.

I also think the investigation is ongoing.

Unless there’s a Dwight trade, these nine are locks: Teague, Harris, Williams, Jenkins, Morrow, Korver, Smith, Horford, and Pachulia. The 12-man roster would need two more bigs and a guy that can defend the wing.

Who ya got?

Other guys taking up roster spots: Stevenson, Williams, and Petro. You need 3 active players above. You dressing one of these guys, or are you cutting at least one so that you can go out and sign for those last 3 spots?

Korver doesn’t sound too excited to be coming to ATL.

“It’s a bit of a bummer for sure,” Korver told ESPN 1000’s “Chicago’s GameNight” on Friday. “I love Chicago. I loved putting on a Bulls uniform. & What do you do? We learned this is a business and teams are going to make business decisions. & I’m gonna go to Atlanta and try and go out there and play well.”

I can understand it being “a bit of a bummer” leaving a team that you enjoyed playing for, but the part that bothers is me is that he is “gonna go to Atlanta and try and go out there and play well.” Doesn’t sound too confident to me. Doesn’t say he is going to give it all he has to help the Hawks win.

@ Jason S . . . you simply have to accept the fact that a lot of guys around the league do NOT see ATL as a premier destination to play. No need to get “bothered” by the fact that guys aren’t overjoyed to come here, as opposed to other places. You have to consider the team Korver came from.

Just Joe

Chicago’s other option was to cut Korver before tomorrow. They were only on the hook for 500k. Korver could have then chosen his next team. Being traded to a re-tooling team that’s already full of shooters obviously would not be his first choice.

Kyle Korver 6′7, and is a SF. I don’t understand the gripes besides him being a less-than-adequate defender.

I don’t understand why you don’t have Stevenson as a lock for a roster spot since the Hawks specifically negotiated a multi-year contract above the veteran’s minimum to ensure that he came in the trade. They’re not going to eat Petro’s salary and not keep him on the Roster. And you haven’t mentioned Ivan.

“Told you that this dude was a legitimate shooter.” – northcyde

We know he’s a legitimate shooter. The question is can he get his shot off or defend his position at the NBA level. I’m encouraged by what I see so far, but as others have said, it’s just summer league.

“Maybe even James Harden-like in a few years.”

I heard Brooks was being dangled as trade bait even after the Dwight trade fell through. Sounds like you have more optimism for Brooks’ future than the Nets organization does. Lou Williams is in direct competition with Harden for 6th man of the year honors. Brooks has a long way to go to ever get in that conversation.

“Kyle Korver 6′7, and is a SF. I don’t understand the gripes besides him being a less-than-adequate defender.”

Um… wow… cause defense isn’t important right? It’s also a bummer that Korver can be completely shut down by a 6-1 point guard, i.e. Teague. I hope after Korver’s comments that Ferry backs out of that trade, unless he’s using him as part of another trade. It would be a bummer to waste a roster spot on a guy whose shooting ability and lack of defense replicates several players already on the roster.

As it stands right now, there is no free agent available that would make the Hawks championship contenders. Howard is an option but he is not a free agent, and its not like the Hawks have engaged in talks to get his services. Ferry has sacrifice the short term for the long term and I find it hard to disagree with his decisions. Its not like the team we had was going to win it all or there was an abundance of talent just waiting to join the hawks. Hopefully we get a high draft pick that yields a superstar and can sign some worthwhile name in next year’s free agent frenzy. Until then, preparing for a long year of growing pains.

@ H4L

If that is the case I can deal with short term pains if the future is brighter. Who knows we might not lose Smith, and quite honestly I think Ferry is doing this because he knows Magic might not be able to trade Howard, and Houston’s offering don’t look all that appealing to them most likely.

Just Joe

Buddy…Stevenson wasn’t wanted by the Hawks. He was forced on them. Hawks wanted Brooks. The 3-yr deal is the minimum allowed in any S&T deal. Only the first year is guaranteed. It’s basically a one-year deal. It could just as easily have been Shelden Williams or Damion James. Stevenson’s salary was slotted so as to create the largest exception for the Hawks while keeping the Nets between the two caps, and of course providing Stevenson with acceptable compensation. I haven’t heard Ferry mention his name once. I can’t assume he has an active roster spot as of now.

Hoops,

I like your 3 team trade idea, especially if we can convince Bynum to sign a long term extension.

Hawks get: Bynum, and Turk
Lakers get: Howard
Magic get: Horford, Devin Harris, Zaza and 3 first round picks (2 in 2013, 1 in 2015).

Would Orlando take that though?

That being said, I would be very concerned about signing Bynum to a max extension when since he has been in the league, he has played in ~53% of the Lakers games, because he is always hurt.

But if we get Bynum, resign Josh, and hang on to Teague, we would still have enough money for one more high level FA (assuming we buy Turk out next year).
