The Hawks are in “serious discussions” with the Bulls to acquire guard Kyle Korver, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. While talks continue, no deal has been completed.
The Chicago Tribune reported that a deal is done, via the Timberwolves, pending Korver passing a physical. However, the person familar with the situation said the talks have not progressed to that point.
The Bulls had to either guarantee Korver’s $5 million option for the 2012-13 season or waive him and pay $500,000 by Sunday.
In 65 games for the Bulls last season, Korver averaged 8.1 points in 22.6 minutes per game. Kover, 31, was a second-round pick (No. 51) by the Nets in the 2003 draft. He was traded to the 76ers, where he spent his first four-plus seasons. He also played for Jazz before playing the past two seasons with the Bulls.

rev, barnes has been languishing on the bench of the lakers for two years. he might have even been injured for part of last season. the lakers it was said was brought to la after the run that the magic to merely weaken the magic as much as strengthen them. he has been playing behind world peace.
on another note, if we dont get d12 and were to have barnes and say scola come here on limited contracts we might be able to be competitive. just dont know how it works with the players already on the roster and the bucks we have to spend but i would roll with them and might say they could be better than last year at face value.

jj was smiling away att he pesss conference but he said positives for this article:
Joe Johnson had the opportunity to come to New York if he really felt like it two summers ago.
He was in that same free-agent class as LeBron James, Amar’e Stoudemire and Dwyane Wade, and the Knicks were among those inquiring about the six-time All-Star guard’s services. But Johnson elected to stay with the Hawks, who could offer him more money than anyone else, taking their six-year, $119-million deal.
“Man, I was already established in Atlanta,” Johnson said Friday after his introductory news conference with Deron Williams at Brooklyn Borough Hall. “We were a team that was on the rise. We had made big jumps and leaps every year. We had a lot of great things going for us.
“So my thing with staying was I was comfortable. I thought we had a great team and I thought we could only get better.”
But there Johnson was Friday, spending time in Brooklyn — a place he’d never visited until Friday — and in an environment he’ll have to get familiar with after being traded to the Nets. He’s already feeding into what should turn out to be a fierce rivalry with the Knicks, saying “definitely, the Nets,” when asked which team in town is better.
“Well, you’ve got to be confident,” he said. “I think being confident will get you somewhere . . . You’ve got to play with a certain swag, a certain confidence. We’ve got some great pieces, but at the same time, when you touch the floor, you’ve got to already feel that you are better than your opponent.”
Williams, Johnson’s new All-Star backcourt sidekick, can’t wait to get going with him by his side.
“I’ve never played with a player of his caliber on the wing,” Williams said, “where he can get his own shot, and create for others and vice versa. I’m going to take a lot of pressure off him and it’s going to be fun to play with him.”
Nets general manager Billy King called his new backcourt the “best in the NBA.”
“We have a Joe Johnson that can score and defend his position, you have Deron that can do the same,” King said. “There are a lot of good backcourts, but I don’t think there are backcourts that can do that. You’ve got two guys that can get you 18, 20 every night and they can defend their positions.”
What about Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles? “They’re good. I like them,” King said. “But I think ours is better. I just think both these guys are physical, they can post up. I think Nash and Kobe, nothing to take away from them, but I think ours is better.”
Notes & quotes: King said the Nets are “close” to an agreement to re-sign forward Kris Humphries.

The Atlanta Hawks look like they will have the cap space to go after Dwight Howard as a free agent. They also have a valuable trade chip in Al Horford. The 26-year-old has four years at $12 million each remaining on his deal. This actually makes him slightly underpaid (not as much of a bargain as Rajon Rondo at $11 million, $12 million and $13 million the next three years).
By trading Horford for expiring contracts (and possible some picks), the Hawks could free up enough cap space to go after Howard AND Chris Paul. By trading Horford (maybe along with Teague), they could potentially acquire a high draft pick from a team that has the cap space to acquire those contracts without sending any salary back.
Granted, that is assuming the Hawks work quickly to acquire those two and then sign Smith. If they dawdle, some team could offer Smith a max. Smith would bring that max offer to the Hawks, and the Hawks would probably have to give him a max. That could lead to the Hawks not being able to give Paul and Howard full max contracts, especially if they acquire a high draft pick.
What would you rather have as a fan?
A team stuck between making the playoffs and the back end of the lottery? A bad team that has a chance to draft a superstar? Submit Vote vote to see results
The Hawks have two factors working for them when it comes to attracting Howard, outside of the quality of the team they can assemble.
First, Josh Smith is one of Howard’s best friends, and in an NBA full of AAU mentalities that may serve as a huge asset.
Second, Atlanta is home for Howard. His family appears to play a crucial role in his decision-making process. Some say his mother played a key role in Howard opting-in with the Magic (h/t Matt Moore of NBCSports). Pressure from his family to play close to home could cause Howard to sign for the Hawks.
Therefore, in that lengthy surveying of the landscape, the Hawks stand as the biggest threat to signing Howard away from the Hawks. Even if they must find a way to deal Horford, to free up enough cap space to sign Howard and Paul.
Also, their plans could be foiled by another team’s zealous pursuit of Josh Smith. Dallas would come in second, but must find a way to deal Marion (or have him opt out) in order to free up enough space to fit both Paul and Howard into their cap.
Even if these teams can offer Howard a max, the Rockets have the advantage of having Howard’s Bird Rights. This allows them to give Howard 7.5 percent annual raises as opposed to 4.5 percent. They can also offer a fifth year where his salary would increase by 10.5%. Compound that with the lack of income tax in Texas.
The financial incentives are better in Houston with respect to Dallas, and far superior with respect to Atlanta.
Now, Houston will not have the greatest cap position to improve their team around Howard. However, the contracts for Hedo Turkoglu and Chris Duhon are non-guaranteed. This gives the Rockets some attractive expiring contracts, to deal for a star to play with Howard.
In particular, the Rockets could look to take on a star being paid like a superstar. Much like the Hawks trading Joe Johnson, a quality supporting star can be acquired for expiring contracts if the contract is bad enough. The Glen Davis and Jason Richardson contracts will be pills the Rockets must swallow. They only become expiring contracts for the 2014-2015 season.

Daryl Morey’s use of analytics will also aid in surrounding Dwight with talent. Acquiring a superstar does not require a team to be smarter, more efficient or better-run than other teams (see Thunder getting Durant, San Antonio getting Duncan, etc.). Finding diamonds in the rough and the correct complementary parts—that is where franchises like the Thunder, Spurs and Rockets shine.
What is difference between the Thunder/Spurs and the Rockets? The Spurs and Thunder had a superstar to build around. This made their excellent talent evaluation matter in title races. If Houston acquires Howard, their ability to find gems will help to affect the balance of power in the NBA rather than keep them in contention for the eighth seed.
Say Howard leaves. Ideally, this occurs before the Rockets use Turkoglu and/or Duhon to acquire a quality supporting piece. The Rockets can then implement the first method of building a title contender. With Howard gone, the Rockets can focus on playing poorly enough to acquire high draft picks and land a superstar they can build around.
Even if the Rockets give their own draft picks (and they have quite a few first round picks in 2013), the Ted Stepien rule prevents them from dealing draft picks in consecutive years. Since they will take a rental on Howard, look for Morey give his 2013 picks and maybe a first in 2015. This is will still give them a chance to get a top pick in 2014. If they can stay bad (and lucky), they could build a foundation of talent much like the Thunder.
The NBA is a league of “haves” and “have nots.” A team must do all they can to get into that former group if they want to win a title.
The Rockets, by going after Howard, allow themselves to finally grab the superstar they have not had since Hakeem Olajuwon (I do not consider Tracy McGrady or Yao Ming superstars in terms of basketball ability).
If it works out, they can build around their center. If it does not work out, they can look forward to having a bad team—but also the chance to land a superstar in the draft.
That beats being stuck in mediocrity.

Joe never struck me as being the brightest bulb in the box. I generally try to avoid parsing what players say word for word, since they probably don’t put nearly that much thought into their own statements, but I would especially avoid that with Joe. He struck me as the type who abided by the age-old saying, “it’s better to keep your mouth closed and look stupid than open it and remove all doubt”.
He’ll still get a standing O from me for helping to lift this franchise from 13 wins to a perennial playoff team.

Two trades for Ferry to ponder:
1. Three way trade with the Magic and Lakers-Lakers get D12, Hawks get Bynum, and Magic get Horford and cap space. The Magic will require draft picks and at least one bad contact sent to the Hawks.
2. If the 1st trade can not be made-Hawks get Iggy and a 1st round pick while the 76er’s get Josh and Farmar. This trade will have to wait until September so Farmar can be traded with another player.
Trade #1 gives you this line up-
PG-Teague/Harris
SG-Williams/Jenkins/Morrow
SF-Barnes/Korver/Stevenson
PF-Josh/I.Johnson/Williams
C-Bynum/Zaza/Petro/Benson
Trade #2 gives you this line up-
PG- Teague/Harris
SG-Williams/Jenkins/Morrow
SF-Iggy/Barnes/Korver/Stevenson
PF-Horford/I. Johnson/Williams
C-Zaza/Benson/Petro
Either way, the Hawks are improved over last year!!! Trade #1 could be EC Champions! Keep up the good work Danny Ferry!!!

Nonetheless, I think that Jenkins will shut up a lot of critics.
His best plays yesterday were:
Breakaway dunk drawing a foul – he is not tremendously athletic but he is not a softy that goes for the layup and get blocked. He knew that he would draw contact and made sure that he put the rock in the hoop.
Alley hoop pass to Benson on a break away – terrific vision and execution. Unselfish and intelligent.
Alley hoop lay up off the inbounds pass – he sealed his defender under the rim with a left arm nudge and managed to tip in a kind of lay up. That’s nba level craftiness in display.

I am very disappointed by Joe Johnson’s comments today. For him to treat his time in Atlanta as a non-event was unclassy. Fans need to boo him out of Philips next year. Section 303 can lead the booing.
*************************
LMAO @ Rev. Are you kidding me?
What was he supposed to say in front of a Brooklyn Nets crowd? That he misses the team so much that traded him for 3 smushed roaches and 2 dead flies? He simply said what dang near every player has said when traded to another team.
Did JJ get this kind of reception when he came to ATL?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5oGqfiCo4M
But people want JJ to show some remorse or give praise to the Hawks, despite them simply dumping him and giving up on him? Really? He’s not supposed to be “excited”?
- He goes from a lukewarm at best basketball town, to the “media center of the world” with rabid fans ready to cheer on their new team to the fullest
- He gets to play beside a future Hall of Fame PG . . arguably the best player he’s ever played with ( and yes that includes Steve Nash ).
- He gets to play for a coach that has won an NBA title as a player and coached a team to the NBA Finals
- Because he’s playing in the “media center of the world”, he’ll now get the exposure that sometimes alluded him in ATL.
- He has a rap ICON as an owner, who will probably make sure he and Deron stay in the media limelight . . especially if they show that they’re a good team right out the gate.
- He instantly gets to play in a huge rivalry game vs the Knicks, which will be hyped beyond belief if both teams are playoff caliber.
- He gets to play in a brand spanking new arena that will be the talk of everything when it is finally completed.
But he’s supposed to just keep all of that “excitement” to himself, and act like his time in ATL was so precious to him? He himself said in that print interview that he thought that the Hawks were “on the rise”. He, like a lot of people, will probably say that if Horford was healthy the entire year, the season and playoffs may have been different.
It’s water under the bridge now though.
He’s in Brooklyn . . and we’re Golden State East.

I agree with Najeh and Vava. If Korver is the “new Vlad”, then I’ll take Korver every time. It’s just that Korver’s “skill of shooting” simply isn’t needed on a team that already has Jenkins and Morrow.
I be dang if Ferry is doing the exact opposite that I wanted him to do. And that is to give Drew a lot of offensive options to go to. I could see Drew giving Jenkins 14 minutes in a game in which he scores 9 points. Then decided to give him a DNP the next game, because he wants to give Korver some playing time.

The ASG definitely fails when it comes to marketing this team. With JJ gone, maybe Smith or Horford ( or both of them ) will become the “face of the franchise”. The marketing is terrible though, no doubt about that.
Compared to Broooklyn’s media marketing, the Hawks look like a hand-written sign on a piece of cardboard, compared to Brooklyn’s electronic signage in Times Square.

“I would much rather have Marshon than Lou Williams. And all of you will to, come December, when the fan base turns on Lou for shooting 39% FG.”
Brooks TS% and eFG% last year: 50.2%, 46.5%
Williams TS% and eFG% last year: 52.5%, 46.0%
Williams TS% and eFG% for his career: 53.2%, 46.6%
I don’t see the big difference. Brooks shoots more efficiently but Williams gets to the line three times as often and has an assist/turnover ratio three times as good. Brooks may be a better long-term asset because he is younger, cheaper, and the right size for his position, but Williams seems to me like the better player right now.
northcyde

Najeh . . what is going to make Brooks a better player, is the fact that he doesn’t fall in love with that 3 point shot like Lou has a tendency to do. He’s already better than Kemba Walker as a player, with his ability to make tough shots. He has a chance to be really, really good.
Avery will throw a “small ball” look at times that may look like this:
PG – Deron
G – Marshon
F – JJ
PF – Wallace
C – Reggie Evans
That squad will not only be able to score, but they can defend AND rebound if need be. Having JJ and Deron on the court beside him, is going to make that kid dangerous. Maybe even James Harden-like in a few years.
Ferry should’ve held his ground and got that kid in a Hawks uniform.

Guys, this may end up being one of the better TEAMS the Hawks have had in some years. With this roster, it will be hard to collapse on Teague or Josh when they drive the lanes, because there will be shooters all around. And if Harris is at the 2 guard, there will be no way that the opposing 2 guard can stay in front of Harris. Harris is still faster today than Bibby was at any time in a Hawk’s uniform. I think this team will have less scoring droughts than previous seasons. Now there will be many times when the Hawks can’t get stops. But then, the Hawks will have the option to go with Stephenson if needed.

The Hawks had a backcourt duo that was getting the team “18, 20 every night.” That backcourt consisted of Joe Johnson and Jamal Crawford during the 2009-2010 regular season but LD had to “muck it up” by implementing his [in]famous “motion offense.” [smh]
FWIW [For what it's worth], I think a backcourt of Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings can average 18+ppg to 20+ppg apiece. Maybe, Russell Westbrook and James Harden, if Harden is also inserted into the starting lineup.

Happy with what I saw out of Jenkins yesteray. But, I won’t let one game get me saying that dude’s the real deal. I think he definitely looks like a players, but, there have been plenty of guys that tear it up in Summer League and then don’t look nearly as good when the actual season begins.
Cautiously optimistic.
