Updated: Hawks in talks about Korver

Vivlamore filling in for MC.

The Hawks are in “serious discussions” with the Bulls to acquire guard Kyle Korver, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. While talks continue, no deal has been completed.

The Chicago Tribune reported that a deal is done, via the Timberwolves, pending Korver passing a physical. However, the person familar with the situation said the talks have not progressed to that point.

The Bulls had to either guarantee Korver’s $5 million option for the 2012-13 season or waive him and pay $500,000 by Sunday.

In 65 games for the Bulls last season, Korver averaged 8.1 points in 22.6 minutes per game. Kover, 31, was a second-round pick (No. 51) by the Nets in the 2003 draft. He was traded to the 76ers, where he spent his first four-plus seasons. He also played for Jazz before playing the past two seasons with the Bulls.

Run Korver off screens and it can open up other things offensively, provided that players make quick decisions with the ball. It’s similar to how the Celtics open up things offensively by running Ray Allen off screens. Yes, he is a major liability in every other respect and shouldn’t play more than 15-20 minutes per game under any circumstances, but that doesn’t mean he is not a useful player if used correctly.

All that said, I’m pretty sure this is more about acquiring a contributor with an expiring contract who is easily movable in a subsequent trade. The Hawks are probably better off using Jenkins in that Ray Allen-like role of running off screens to catch and shoot.

Already signed with Indiana. 3 years $10 million.

Gerald Green is an athletic SCRUB!!! We don not need him. He does not have the BRAIN to win in playoff Basketball!

Kyle Korver is a bench player…we all know that…it’s not like we are getting him to play against LBJ. The point is that our bench this year is MILES BETTER than the one we fielded last year. Without question. More diverse and these guys won’t struggle to score. It would be rare they give up a 12 pt lead.

The flip side is that our Starting 5 isn’t as strong because we have no proven starter at SG or SF. As much as we loathed Marvin Williams he was a starting caliber SF. Now we can mix and match and go small etc. etc. but the fact is that we need a SF. We have enough guards that can score in order to get by playing small but we need a SF.

I’m not sure who’s available. I know Anthony Randolph is available….he can play the 4 and Josh Smith can play the 3. That’s the best solution I see.

I will say this — I’d rather have Korver than the guy (Vlad Rad) who was supposed to occupy that role last year. Role players are always better when they realize their limitations and play within them, and Korver is much better at that than Vlad Rad.

Hawks go from Sugar to shi#^>#%}. Ferry is lost without Duncan with Spurs and the Kang in Cleveland. No SuperStar is going to sign here. Forget it. Atlanta is home to most of these guys girl friends or groupies. Howard who grew up here has more azz here than he can keep up with. You think he wants to live here?? Whyyy so they all can bump into each other. Gathering up all of these scraps of players would be good if you use them for bait. BUT it’s not gonna happen! NBA players LOVE coming to Atlanta to play a game but not to STAY! Get Real with rebuilding this team!!!

@Shameless Hawks Fan:

You’re so right. I see it so clearly now. Losing Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams has destroyed this franchise, and we will never ever recover.

I’m throwing in the towel. Danny Ferry has proven conclusively that he will never be able to win in Atlanta, and all hope is lost. I’m going upstairs now to tell my young sons, who are getting ready for bed, that they can no longer be Hawks fans.

Then I’m getting online and ordering some Miami Heat merchandise. I just hope to God that my children will never remember these futile, hopeless times when they were losers cheering for their hometown team, instead of frontrunners chasing whatever superstar-laden team was the flavor of the month.

We have, as you so eloquently put it, gone from Sugar…to Sh*t. Thank you, Shameless Hawks Fan, for showing us all the way.

Danny Ferry knows what the heck he’s doing I say anyone trying to bring him down back off let the man work.

This guy isn’t BK and he’s def not Rick Lame Duck Sund. He knows Houston is after Dwight real bad like someone said he’s trying to jam up Houston so they can’t have all these pieces.

I got to admit based off 1 game John Jenkins just might kill it in the NBA and Benson isn’t looking that timid no more. But it’s just one game.

Still we’ve all be moaning and groaning for a Center Sign Keith Benson NOW!

EVERYONE SHOULD THINK ABOUT THIS!
Last year Larry Drew had players that were left from Woodson’s system (heavy isolation players) that did not work in the motion offense. But now what Danny Ferry has done is get rid of the past Woodson/Sund era mistakes and bring in the new Drew/Ferry team (note: both want a great passing and great shooting team)! Last year the Hawks shot great from downtown with terrible shooters! Now bring in the top of the line gunners we have now and see what will happen! The motion offense will work with the players we have! Danny Ferry is doing better than I could have ever dreamed of in building this team! This team right now is as good (if not better) than last year’s team, yet there is still MORE room to go! We are one player (possibly Iggy or Rudy Gay) from being a serious title contender!

If Ferry was given a green light he should have went the way of shipping out Josh Smith to get a real center not Joe. Marvin included or not. Joe had and amnesty tag over his head as long as wore a Hawks jersey. Hell he traded him and got NOTHiNG in return but warm bodies so what’s the difference? Teague Joe Marvin Al plus Bynum ..McGee ….Hibbert…. Hawes. Josh at 13 mil per was an easy cover to unload in a S/T or added in with 2 1st round picks or money or whatever the hell it took. Now it’s just gutted and STINKS!!!

@heartofdarkness:

All our bigs are athletic and good passers—Josh, Al, and Zaza have all shown the propensity to kick it out, especially on the break.

Add to that the guards that we have—Teague, Lou, Devin Harris, Morrow, Jenkins.

The better question is “who *wouldn’t* pass the ball to Korver?”

Rev in Tampa

“The point is that our bench this year is MILES BETTER than the one we fielded last year. Without question.”

And last year’s bench was miles better than Josh Powell & company. The bench might have been better that year if Larry Drew would have unglued Teague’s butt from the pines.

@SHF:

Interesting scenario, but I don’t think we were going to get Bynum for Smoove. I wouldn’t give Hibbert the max, and I wouldn’t give McGee the time of day.

If Joe and Marvin had stayed, we would’ve continued to get nothing from Marvin, and Joe’s production would’ve continued to decline.

Though it is true that Hibbert/McGee/Bynum would’ve helped to rebound all the misses.

The Rockets, according to a league source briefed on the discussions, are willing to take one bad contract back from the Magic, not two or three, as has been speculated.
