Updated: Hawks in talks about Korver

Vivlamore filling in for MC.

The Hawks are in “serious discussions” with the Bulls to acquire guard Kyle Korver, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. While talks continue, no deal has been completed.

The Chicago Tribune reported that a deal is done, via the Timberwolves, pending Korver passing a physical. However, the person familar with the situation said the talks have not progressed to that point.

The Bulls had to either guarantee Korver’s $5 million option for the 2012-13 season or waive him and pay $500,000 by Sunday.

In 65 games for the Bulls last season, Korver averaged 8.1 points in 22.6 minutes per game. Kover, 31, was a second-round pick (No. 51) by the Nets in the 2003 draft. He was traded to the 76ers, where he spent his first four-plus seasons. He also played for Jazz before playing the past two seasons with the Bulls.

From hoopshype;

KC Johnson: The Korver trade is via Minnesota into Atlanta’s traded player exception, meaning Bulls get 2nd-round pick from Minny and save $500K.

Give credit to the Hawks. They actually used a TPE. When was the last time that happened?

Currently, the only guys under contract for 2013-2014 is Al Horford at $12 mil, and JJ2 ($2 mil maybe?). So if the salary cap remains at $58 mil, we would have $44 mil in cap space (not counting cap holds of course), and not counting exceptions.

I think that is Danny Ferry’s plan. Get a bunch of expiring contracts, and hope to sign 2 high level FA next offseason, and retain Josh Smith.

Key thing is his contract is expiring whereas Kirk (going to the Bulls) will likely get a multi year deal. I have no problem with this move, but they really should make a move for a defensive-minded swingman like Pietrus or Barnes before it is too late.

Who won the Hawks summer league game today? What was the score? How did Jenkins look?

Hawks ran ‘em out of the gym, looked good. Were up by 20 to 25 points most of the game.

Jenkins 19 points on 7-12 shooting, made all 4 threes.

Not too shabby….

How many games did we lose from missed free throws last year? With jenkins, Morrow, Louis and Korver on the floor, who in the hell you gonna foul? Jenkins’ free throws didnt even touch the nets today. lol

Jenkins scored 19 with hardly any help…imagine what he will do with Teague, Smoove, and Al passing him the ball for a wide open shot most of the time!! Starter maybe?

Oops, 7-13 shooting for Jenkins, not 7-12.

Never mind, the guy’s a bum. :-)

Great point on the free throws, terrell. Someone earlier also mentioned that Josh would have to go low and not hang out on the perimeter, because there would already be guys there who can shoot it.

Jenkins looks resourceful, too. He got a couple buckets in close, including a nice tap on an inbounds play. He’s not just a shooter, he’s a scorer. Seems to have a really high basketball IQ.

Summer league production doesn’t mean sh-t. With that said, on the game highlights, Jenkins looks more athletic than, say, JJ Redick (who seems to be a frequent comparison for him). That is a good sign.

Wonder why Pape Sy the Choice of a New Generation only played 4 minutes.

Man we have some bonafide knock down shooters: Korver, Morrow, Lou Williams, Stevenson.

Josh Smith better not EVER shoot another three….EVER.

Joe Johnson was introduced as an official Nets today.

“I haven’t been this excited since my Phoenix days,” Johnson said of the prospect of playing with Williams.

Two points:
1 – Billy Knight coul;d hav had JJ excited several years ago, if only he knew how to evaluate talent.

2- After all the years, and dollars that JJ was given in Atlanta…he never got this excited???!!!

Keep in mind that you are watching these young players against other young, inexperienced players, so just because they stand head and shoulders above the the field that they’re playing in now, doesn’t equate to them doing that when the grown men take the court.

Good comments all…

Yes Jenkins looked really good, and does have a high basketball IQ. I am telling you, every times he shoots, you think it is going in. He hit 2 dagger 3’s as the shot clock was going off that were nothin but net. He also played pretty good defense against the more physical Bradley Beal. He also had a great alley-oop pass to Benson on a dunk. Good to see that he had court vision and just doesn’t look for his own shot.

Mike Scott played a good game too, he has a good face up game and can hit some pick and pop shots. He was mixing it up, getting physical and getting some rebounds and defense. He is a little undersized to play the 4, but you can see he is a player.

I wanted to see more from Shurma from Northwestern, and first game, and he still has some work to do, especially getting stronger. He made some shots, but not the elite shooter that Jenkins is. Korver is a clearly a better player right now.

Benson played really well, scoring 19 points as well. He still needs to bulk up, but was mixing it up and was around the basket.

Wannemaker played better, but did have some turnovers do to some pressure from Sheldon Mack, who was really pressing him, but he had a decent game. Taylor looked a little nervous then calmed down as the game went on.

Overall, very impressed with the effort on hustle of the team, they held their ground and kept playing hard even when Washington made runs. Very impressed with the first game.

Look at the player that Rondo has developed into…Jenkins could very well become a superstar, but we have to give hime some time on the court with the grown-ups.

Would be a really nice find to get a Reggie Miller type scorer on the Hawks.

@Najeh: Jenkins seems to look good in all the ways you want him to look good. I just think he’ll be able to adjust to the league and get his shot off. Play team defense, all that. He’s, uh…crafty is the word I would use.

I don’t see why people are complaining about all the shooters??? Last time I checked plenty of shooters are a great thing! The best teams in the league (MIA, OKC, SAS, BOS) have a ton of great spot up shooters! Teague, Smoove, and Al need to learn to draw a double team and kick out to the perimeter! This also gives oppurtunities for Teague to drive one on one (without defensive help from other teams concerned about outside shooting) and for Al and Smoove to post up one on one!

Joe Johnson today:

“I want to thank the Hawks for making me an insanely rich man, even though I provided diminishing returns and failed to lead the team in any way. I showed indifference to, and even contempt for, the fans of Atlanta. I would have flipped off the crowd in my last home game, but I was kind of tired.

“In closing, I look forward to the next few years, where my increasingly bloated annual salary can drag the Nets down further and further into salary cap hell, while I get older and the quality of my play plummets. But my ultimate goal is to do all I can to help Deron Williams make another quality head coach want to quit in midseason and possibly never coach again.”

Korver deal could be about D12? Here’s how. Houston’s on the make for Asik, possibly to package in a trade deadline deal with the Magic for D12. Chicago likely less willing to match Houston’s Asik offer with Korver on the books, and could move him and pick up a future 2nd. With Korver gone, and a few other castoffs, Bulls now more likely to match Houston’s offer to Asik. Surely Ferry is well aware of this dynamic, and may be playing a little defense against the Rockets by potentially denying the Rockets an asset that may well be of huge interest to Orlando in a D12 trade. Orlando wants/needs a young, inexpensive, up and coming 5, and Asik fits that bill perfectly.

So what’s the downside? Not much. A shooter like Korver with an expiring will likely be much sought after – at the trade deadline – by a team making a push to get even stronger for the playoffs. He may even be important enough to a team’s playoff push to offer a future first.

FTPB

“Absorbing one or maybe even two of those contracts would suck, but to take on pretty much every one of the Magics bad contracts just to get Howard’s services for a season with no gaurantee of an extension is dumb beyond dumb.”

I can see Houston’s point of view because any team that trades for Dwight without a commitment is really looking at this year as a “bridge” year and intends to really start building a contender next summer. By the time next summer rolls around, Turkoglu has a $12 million expiring deal, Duhon has a $4 million expiring deal, and Davis and Richardson have two years left at only slightly higher than the non-taxpayer mid level.

In other words, if Dwight stays in Houston next summer, Houston has $16 million worth of expiring deals to offer somebody for a complementary star (kind of like how the Nets sent their expiring deals here in the Joe trade). If Dwight leaves, Houston is going to suck anyway in 2013-14, and those deals will be wiped off the books just in time for them to pick high in the lottery and maybe look for a big time free agent to pair with their 2014 lottery pick.

For a team like Houston that really doesn’t have any All Star caliber players on their roster to build around, taking on all those deals makes sense. For a team like the Hawks that would look to team Dwight with a player or two that is already on the current roster, it isn’t quite as sensible.

Kover, Really??

It’s hard to criticize when you really don’t know what’s going on, but K Kover? With respect to rebounding and defense, he makes Marvin Williams look like a stud, no seriously.

When the Hawks played small ball against Chicago, LD would put 6′-2″ Teague on Kover 6′-7″ and he would struggle. This guy is totaling one-dimensional with no exception. If he’s not knocking’m down, he’s useless. He can be deadly though if he’s left alone so he will stretch the defense. He needs picks to get-off because he can’t create. With respect to the Hawks redundant shooters, he’s not really bringing anything unique to the Hawks other than his 6′-7″ body as a SF.

I hope there’s more to this story than what meets the eye because the Hawks will have a rebounding-defense hole. If the Hawks can’t stop anyone, the will just have high-scoring losses.

Kyle Korver Is Not Marvin Williams

July 13th, 2012

Not to be That Guy, but it’s Korver, not Kover.

Also, I’m pretty sure Danny Ferry will have a diverse enough squad to cover the rebounding and defense thing. Defense in the league is more about rotating and playing team defense anyway.

For example, Smoove is not a great one-on-one defender, but he is a great help defender. And you yourself said someone like Teague was able to give Korver a hard time.

It looks like Ferry is building a team of above-average role players. Get them to hustle and play team defense, and they’ll be fine. But we have to be able to shoot the ball first.

“What’s the rule about trading traded players? Are we not stuck with all this guys until January?”

Players acquired in a trade can be traded by themselves or with draft picks immediately. If you want to package them with other players, you have to wait two months after acquiring them. So Korver, for example, can be traded by himself right now, but can’t be packaged with other players in a trade until September.
