Updated: Hawks in talks about Korver

Vivlamore filling in for MC.

The Hawks are in “serious discussions” with the Bulls to acquire guard Kyle Korver, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. While talks continue, no deal has been completed.

The Chicago Tribune reported that a deal is done, via the Timberwolves, pending Korver passing a physical. However, the person familar with the situation said the talks have not progressed to that point.

The Bulls had to either guarantee Korver’s $5 million option for the 2012-13 season or waive him and pay $500,000 by Sunday.

In 65 games for the Bulls last season, Korver averaged 8.1 points in 22.6 minutes per game. Kover, 31, was a second-round pick (No. 51) by the Nets in the 2003 draft. He was traded to the 76ers, where he spent his first four-plus seasons. He also played for Jazz before playing the past two seasons with the Bulls.

AJ,

I think Sy is in LV just to appease LD but Ferry has absolutely no intention to sign him.

And it’s not that he was tearing it up back in France too:

Yeah Pape Sy cool name, but he’s not good, and he’s only there for L.D kind of like Sloan and Wananamker whatever the hell the kids name is lol.

Summer League is pretty much the extended more in-depth evaluation period for H.C and scouts so they can see where players stand playing at other players their level do they rise above or fall below.

In the case of Pape Sy he’s falling way below and in case of Keith Benson so far it seems like he’s rising.

About Keith Benson he’s starting to rub off on me as an Offensive Center which is something I can deal with since we have a Defensive one in Zaza.

I really hope he makes the team.

I really think Benson is going to make the team this year. Adding him to Al, Zaza, Petro would give the birds some much needed depth and athletesism!

Jenkins, Scott and Benson should make the team. I would be okay with Jordan Taylor as the 3rd PG as well. He was rated as one of the top PGs in college before the start of the season last year.

LD obviously has his favorites, so its a good thing that he doesn’t make the personnel decisions.
Sy should never be mentioned on this blog to make this roster. LD spent more time discussing Sy’s improvements this offseason more than he has spoken about anyone else on this team.

Do you folks see why there is so much skepticisim about LD’s decision making?

Hawks are in a great position for next season. There are options now, trade for Howard and sign him long term. Stand pat, sign a SF like Green or Randolph. Give yourself the option to sign either Howard or Paul next season. Harris is on last year of his deal, and I think Teague as well. I like what the Hawks are doing. Finally, we also have some real knock down shooters in Korver, Morrow, and Jenkins. i like the direction we are headed. What about Steve Jackson at SF?

Sporthouse,

Captain Jax has one year on his contract. I’m ok with bringing in Randolph, Matt Barnes or Childress. I would like to sign Jermaine O’Neal or Ryan Hollins as the last big.

Does anyone have the skinny on Josh Howard? He’s listed as a free agent, but I don’t know if someone’s picked him up. Is he injured? Too expensive? Over the hill?

I know there was a time when he would’ve been a great pickup at SF. Hadn’t heard anything, though.

In my opinion, Josh Childress was overrated the first time when he was with the Hawks. Also, one of the main reasons that he left the Hawks the first time was because he didn’t like playing with Josh Smith. And why do we want Josh Childress back????

I’m sure Pape’s minutes in the summer league are falling behind because he’s already received a training camp invitation. He’s got nothing to prove in summer league. Right now, Hawks are trying to decide whether to bring Benson, Hassell, Carter, Hazell, Wannamaker, Taylor, or Shurna to camp.

Pape’s already got a new two year contract waiting on him back in France. He’s got an “out” if he signs a guaranteed deal from an NBA team.

Has there been any information on the Korver trade? There was a Sunday deadline for Chicago to guarantee Korver’s contract or buy him out. Sorry if this has already been covered. I’m at work and can’t search through the last few pages.

Yeah, I agree, a big NO on Josh Childress. Can’t shoot. Too small for SF and too slow for SG.

Give me Grant Hill for a couple of years, though.

Buddy, I heard he had his physical scheduled for today. Not sure if that’s what they’re waiting on.

The way Danny Ferry’s been keeping it quiet, though, he’ll probably jump up behind you and announce it in your living room some time later today.

“Do you folks see why there is so much skepticisim about LD’s decision making?” – KevinM

Yeah, LD being so bullish about Sy is an indictment on him but MC as well. The following is excerpts from MC the previous blog (MC also sowhat negative about Benson):

•Pape Sy is back, baby! That’s exciting enough on its own but Sy got me really hyped by showing up looking ripped. Seriously, dude is muscled-up. “I tried to work on my body to get stronger on the court,” he said. “Now I feel great.”
•Larry Drew on Sy: “He’s been in that weight room. He’s gotten stronger. When he goes to the basket, you can see when he takes contact he can still get his shot off. That’s a pro move to take contact and get your shot off.”
•As mentioned a few weeks ago, the Hawks finally have abandoned their plan to try to make Sy a point guard. It was pretty obvious after his first couple of summer games in 2010 that his NBA future is not at the point. “I feel good as a two guard,” Sy said. “I am trying to get to the hoop and I work on my shot. I feel better now. Playing the two may be more easier for me.”
•The Hawks have a hole on their roster on the wing and Sy certainly has the size to play there. He’s always had some potential as a wing defender. Drew said Sy could play some small forward in smaller lineups.
•“Pape has really gotten better,” Drew said. “I’ve always been intrigued by his size, his ability to get to the basket, his strength. He knows how to draw fouls when he goes to the cup. His shot has improved. Defensively he’s aggressive. I think this summer league will be really good for him to see where he measures up at this level.”

•Keith “Kito” Benson is back, too. Word is he looked much the same during today’s scrimmage–timid and getting knocked around–but Benson says he’s gotten stronger and plans to have an “aggressive mindset” this time around.

And I agree, Benson should make this team. He needs to bulk up but he knows how to play basketball. I’ll take that over the opposite – Fab Melo – 7 days a week.

Agree on Benson as well. With the roster as currently constructed, Benson brings some uniqueness to the Hawks with his size, scoring and athletics. The weight will come with his age and conditioning.

He seems to have a Camby-like frame so don’t expect his shoulders to get much broader.

For you guys talking about keeping Benson, I’m on board. I saw Solomon Jones on the Philly team and from where he started to where he is now, he has filled out and has a way of getting on a roster.
I see Benson as this type of guy and if Benson can get to mama’s kitchen and start eating more dumplings, he might find some minutes behind Zaza. He still shows like he can be pushed around. He ought to watch videos of Garnett about how to lean on guys and push against them to gain a position on the floor.

Pape Sy? I don’t need to see another minute of this promotional attempt to create a LD prodigy. He’s a smaller scale of Chills getting people to continue throwing money at him. I don’t see it.

“What is the ord on Anthony Randolph? Does anyone know anything?”

I read a host of teams still interested in him including Dallas and Denver, all as a result of the Hawks interest (or so it seems).

Danny is right to stay on the down-low about him. Here’s a related article about Randolph that may lower the expectation about Benson summer-camp performance.

I hope Benson doesn’t follow the Randolph example if he’s selected by the Hawks.

AJ,

I liked him as a Hawk but i must admit, Rick Sund got that one right..

I disagree. Dude averaged 10 pts, 6 rebs in 32 mpg, shooting 52% from the field. If he stayed with the hawks, I see no reason to believe Childress couldn’t continue putting up those numbers.

I think going to Greece for 2 years really messed him and his game up (for whatever reason).

o’b same here. i think we could have gotten more out of him for that period. he finished games, didnt need or want the ball in his hands to get a score and played solid defense on many different types of players. he is older, edging into the thirties so the edge he had and athleticism is going to wane and what he is experiencing.
