“Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin hurt his left knee in a Team USA scrimmage Wednesday and is returning to Los Angeles to be examined by team doctors.

Griffin twisted the knee in a scrimmage, a source said. The severity of the injury is unclear. He’s expected to have an MRI, possibly as soon as Thursday.

Griffin injured the same knee in Game 5 of the Clippers’ first-round series against the Memphis Grizzlies.

USA Basketball officials have asked New Orleans Hornets rookie forward Anthony Davis, one of Team USA’s final cuts last week, to report to training camp.

Davis was on his way to Las Vegas on Thursday afternoon after attending a cable TV event in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo told Y! Sports’ Marc Spears that Davis will be available to play in Team USA’s exhibition against the Dominican Republic, but Davis isn’t guaranteed a roster spot if Griffin is unable to participate in the Olympics.

Colangelo said he was surprised that Griffin awoke with swelling in his knee. He doesn’t know how severe Griffin’s injury is.

Griffin signed a five-year, $95 million contract extension with the Clippers this week.”

I hope Al puts on a show for the DR tonight so we can see how healthy he is against other NBA players.
Saying that, I want to improve his value as he is just limited in his role with us.

I don’t think I have ever heard of a team C who couldn’t guard other teams’ C position? He doesn’t want to bang with guys who are bigger than him, hence, we have an overlap of talent at the PF position.

Going forward, D12 needs to sign a long-term deal if we end up dealing for him. I can understand if that’s the approach. Orlando’s bargaining position is limited at this point, and they should just move forward and take the assets offered to them and start promoting their new team…without D12.

Slim, I give you props for your admiration for Nicholson, playing SL ball live right now. He is standing out in the SL, and it looks like he will be in the ORL rotation this season.

It’s a shame D12 won’t give this his new teammate a look. They might have ended up being a dynamic duo.

For those interested should we have an opening at head coach:
“Hall of Famer Jerry Sloan said he interviewed Wednesday for the Portland coaching job but has removed himself from consideration. Sloan said Trail Blazers general manager Neil Olshey flew to Salt Lake City to interview him. However, Sloan called the team Thursday to pull out. “I talked to them yesterday,’’ Sloan said in a phone interview with FOX Sports Florida. “But it just didn’t work out on my part.’’

Wonder what Sloan is looking for to come back and give it another run?
Does he want a superstar in place before he considers a serious return?

I’ve noticed JTeague’s name has regularly been included with every trade talk involving the Hawks trading for DHoward. The Magic successfully resigned JNelson, their starting PG the last few yrs. Therefore, with no need for a starting caliber PG, I don’t think they would demand that Teague be included. If the trade involves us taking back Turkulou’s and/or Richardson’s contract(s), I’d offer them Horford, both 2013 1st rd picks, 1 or 2 of our expiring contracts, and nothing more.

have fun MC.

we are obviously good at the PG/SG position, we have no true backup SF behind josh and i refuse to believe deshawn stevenson, anthony morrow, or pape sy can guard these 6′8 long athletes for extended minutes. i see two guys out there that can fill this void; mickael pietrus and cj miles. i would have loved to see gerald green in a hawks uni filling the lanes on the fast break with teague(more like josh) at point and josh on the other wing.

what can we offer the recently amnestied brandon haywood? he could start and let zaza come off the bench(playing more minutes than brandon would overall) but we need a legite 7 footer not 6′8 ivan or mike scott forced to play a position they will be overwemed by. al can get minutes at C when we play smaller teams but to have a 7 footer makes defense better for everone especially if devin harris and louis williams are playing at the same time, we will need rim protection.

Teague is NOT as dumb as Al Horford. Teague just left school early so he seems dumb.In 4 more years he will catch up to the rest of the league. Al, I understand is a project because he had 4 full years so he has no excuse for playing that poorly and selfishly.

I too would rather have JaVale McGee than Al Horford.

Ken S, it would be hard to take on Turk’s contract even though we have a wide open slot at SF. That is Marvin-esque.

So if you are offered D12 but you gotta take JRich and Turk, that’s 36M+ coming back to us, yet we are only giving away Al/Harris(worse case)/2 #1s(no big deal to me)/Morrow(4M), that’s what roughly 26M?
Is that a trade that’s even doable? I would think Turk would have to come off, and I would even add Zaza to give ORL 2 frontcourt guys to replace one.
I’m guessing they would rather dump Turk for immediate relief over a guy who can still produce some, JRich.

Ken, are you proposing that deal even if D12 won’t sign an extension?

H-S – Compare the last 5 years between the Clippers & Hawks and let me know who has more playoff wins. Can’t believe you are actually going to defend the Clippers!

NBA is a business – I agree. Could that be why Jamal wasn’t resigned here?
——————————————————————————————

The NBA is a “what-have-you-done-for-me-lately?” league. I’m sure Woody and LD can attest to this. A coach and/or a player has to always be improving/producing in order to attempt to satisfy the ownership. Look at all the COY Award recipients who have been fired (e.g., Byron Scott, Mike Brown, Avery Johnson, Mike D’Antoni, Rick Carlisle, Mike Schuler, Mike Fratello, Sam Mitchell (I think), Bill Fitch, Hubie Brown, etc.) When asked in an interview about how he felt about his current COY consideration status, Woody, who was in his last year with the Hawks, immediately tried to dismiss and avoided answering the question. Woody knows the history of the COY Award as well as various coaches’ fates after winning that particular award.

I do know that the Los Angeles Clippers went from a win-loss record of 32-50 (0.390) in the 2010-2011 regular season to win-loss record of 40-26 (0.606) in the 2011-2012 regular season and a first round playoff series victory.

We got a Johan Petro as a legit 7 footer…He’s got almost double the important back up stats that Jason Collins had last season in less MPG and is eight years younger…Horford for small center, Zaza as the primary but undersized champion of the slot, and Johan as a back up is a pretty legit set of three centers to build the squads around. When you want it big, you run Al at PF like we’ve always wanted of him, and if we can’t find another perhaps pick up Twin for one final run as our fourth string center….We have more than enough pieces to make this team a serious underdog amongst all the odd-ball nonsense happening in the East this year, just a solid wing or two for guaranteed defensive options (I still am gravy on a Raja Bell acquisition) and we’re just as good if we maintain our health as we were last season, with greater flexibility and a more exciting, less Iso-oriented offense….I’m game, let’s see who rusts first….

Dwight Howard Rumors: Hawks Not Giving Up Just Yet

Jul 11 8:00a by Kris Willis

Read More: Josh Smith (F – ATL), Dwight Howard (C – ORL), Al Horford (C – ATL), Atlanta Hawks

If we have learned anything from the daily trade rumors and saga surrounding Dwight Howard it is that no team is really ever completely out of the running. The Hawks have checked in with Orlando on Howard and while they haven’t been one of the most prominent teams mentioned they don’t believe that they are completely out of the running either.

Hawks, I’m told, still think they’re alive in Dwight trade chase. With plenty of pieces to offer and Josh Smith to lobby Howard to stay
— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) July 11, 2012

Its really not that far fetched when you think about it. Atlanta has Al Horford who it could offer as the centerpiece of a trade for Howard that would reunite him with his childhood friend in Josh Smith. Atlanta has the room to sign both Smith and Howard to new deals and make them the faces of their hometown franchise.

However, the Hawks are unlikely to include Horford in any trade for Howard without some kind of assurance that Howard would re-sign in Atlanta

Atlanta Hawks Get Trade Exception

The Hawks dealt Joe Johnson to the Brooklyn Nets which yielded then a $5 million trade exception.

The team is expected to sign Lou Williams with their Mid-Level Exception which will lock in a hard cap of $74.3 million.

Before re-signing Ivan Johnson (presuming they do), the Hawks have about $62.3 million in committed salaries including Williams.

Recently acquired Guard Jordan Farmar is expected to be bought out of his $4.25 million contract for $1.5 million which will add even more spending power . . . although look for the Hawks to spend carefully with an eye on cap room after this coming season.

http://www.hoopsworld.com/nba-pm-players-give-back-57-million

Regarding a D12 trade, exception can be traded like players. We could include some exceptions to balance the trade between Orlando. But the way Orlando has been turning down offers, I doubt they’ll be interested. But I could be wrong.

Indecisiveness between D12 and Orlando has made everyone look stupid who attempts to predict a likely outcome.

“Nike is cutting one of its last remaining ties to Joe Paterno — removing his name from the child care building on the corporation’s campus.

The move comes just hours after independent investigators revealed the former Penn State coach helped cover-up facts about the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal.

Nike President Mark Parker said in a statement, “With the findings released today, I have decided to change the name of our child care center at our World Headquarters.”

Nike founder Phil Knight added, “It appears Joe made missteps that led to heartbreaking consequences.”

PSU sports teams have been outfitted by Nike since 1996.

Not basketball news, but Zaza has been up at Harvard working on his after career:
“In June, business owners from around the world came together at Harvard Business School to take part in a three-day seminar titled “Leading Your Small Business Through Its Lifecycle,” where students learned best practices for managing their small businesses. Joining them at Harvard was Atlanta Hawks center and Buckhead Bottle Bar owner, Zaza Pachulia. Over the course of the three-day seminar at Harvard, Zaza worked through “real life” case studies related to small business ownership alongside the other 60 students in the class. The class required each student to dissect three case studies per day, finding creative solutions to everyday situations in a variety of business platforms. Leading the class was Professor Richard S. Ruback who stated that Zaza “actively contributed to class discussions, showed a real passion for learning and gained a lot from his time at Harvard.”

Additionally, the NBA sent out last year’s tax bill and the Los Angeles Lakers were hit with a league high $12.6 million luxury tax. Five additional teams will pay as well: Boston Celtics $7.4 million, Miami HEAT $6.1 million, Dallas Mavericks $2.7 million, San Antonio Spurs $2.5 million and Atlanta Hawks ($666k). Taxes need to be paid into the league by July 20th.

The total tax bill for 2011/12 season was $31,971,788. The payments will be used in full, just this one time, to help fund the league’s revenue sharing system. In the future, the CBA calls for only 50% of the total tax payments will go to revenue sharing. The remaining 50% will sent out to each non-tax-paying team in equal shares.

That might be why the Hawks weren’t as concerned about their slight tax bill as they’re not losing out on the team distribution by being over.
