The Hawks and free-agent guard Lou Williams have agreed to a multiyear contract, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.
Terms of the deal were not immediately known but the Hawks likely will sign Williams by using part of their mid-level salary-cap exception. The person with knowledge of the deal said the contract would allow the Hawks to maintain the salary-cap flexibility they gained by recently agreeing to trade Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams.
Williams opted out of the final year of his contract with Philadelphia, which was to pay him $5.4 million in 2012-13.
The deal can’t become official until the NBA’s moratorium on most transactions ends Wednesday.
Williams, 25, is a former star at South Gwinnett High school, where he was a two-time Mr. Basketball winner and a McDonald’s All-American. After committing to Georgia, he decided to declare for the 2005 draft and was selected by Philadelphia in the second round. He played in 455 games with Philadelphia, mostly as a reserve.
Williams figures to fill a similar bench-scoring role with the Hawks. Once Atlanta completes the trades involving Johnson and Williams and secures a buyout of Jordan Farmar, the team will have five guards on the roster in addition to Williams: Jeff Teague, Devin Harris, Anthony Morrow, John Jenkins and DeShawn Stevenson.
Williams led the Sixers in scoring last season with 14.9 points in 26.3 minutes per game and posted team-best PER marks in the past two seasons. He finished second to Thunder guard James Harden in voting for the 2011-12 NBA Sixth Man Award.
Williams is smallish combo guard who’s a volume shooter with a so-so jump shot. But he manages to be a fairly efficient scorer because of a very good free-throw rate. Last season Williams ranked sixth in scoring rate among point guards who played at least 25 minutes per game.
The Sixers allowed 3.38 fewer points per 100 possessions with Williams on the bench. Williams had a 12.1 opposing PER against against point guards and 11.9 against shooting guards.

This is pleasing news. Assuming the Hawks aren’t trying to overpay, Williams will help provide that spark off the bench and another dynamic scorer to help fill the void left by Johnson’s departure.
I would assume that we could be filling a bench role similar to that of Jamal Crawford in the past. I’m just happy to see a general manager being proactive and looking to shake up the team. This roster is going to look very different at the start of next season, compared to previous seasons. We appear to be revamping things significantly and changing the makeup of the team. These aren’t just veteran minimum signings that we are talking about anymore. The players being acquired thus far as are definitely impact players who can make a difference. I like Devin Harris, although he seems less explosive than in previous years, and I like the creative/dynamic nature of Lou Williams. I also like the toughness of guys like DeShawn Stevenson. I know we are taking a step back in some ways, but I actually like some of these signings and feel like it’s going to be much more interesting to watch this team next season. It will finally feel fresh and interesting. No more watching the same, repetitive Hawks year after year.
Good Job, Mr. Ferry.

I believe Lou is also friends with Josh Smith and Anthony Morrow. Put 2 and 2 together and it looks like the Hawks are trying to bring all of D12’s friends here in hopes of enticing him to come to Atlanta and sign long-term. If we use the mid-level on Lou then we can still resign Smooth, Howard and make a pitch to CP3.

Like this pickup a lot. Will LOVE IT if it is a precursor to another, more significant move. And one would have to believe it will be with all the guards on the current roster. Trade Al, Devin, and maybe Stevenson plus some picks for D12 and I’ll be very happy.

Not to mention publicly mocking his coach going behind the coaches back to get him fired and then denies it.

Lou Williams = a young Jamal Crawford. I’m all for it. I hate to tell you guys this, but this Dwight thing might really be real. If the Lou Williams thing is true, I know that he, Josh and Dwight are all from the A and good friends. There might be a A-Town resurgence going on with guys that really are from the A. The last time some real A-towners banded together we got the Dungeon Family with Outkast, Goodie Mob, C-Lo. Rise up Dirty South.
———————————————————————————
I was thinking the same thing about the A-T-L connection between Dwight Howard, Josh Smith and Lou Williams. If Danny Ferry is able to pull off a deal that brings Howard to the Hawks, I will have to give Ferry his props for that bit of maneuvering. Right now, the Hawks are a little “thick” at the scoring/shooting guard position. One of the (current) Hawks’ guards will definitely have to be dealt.

Not that I’m a proponent for getting D-12, but you have to recall everyone saying that once the Nets traded for Deron Williams, he was as good as gone come free agency.
But the Nets sold him on staying with signings and trades (although I believe they have 2 seriously overpaid guys in Joe Johnson and Gerald Wallace).
If the Nets could do it for Deron, it’s certainly possible that ATL could pull off the same regarding Dwight.
Although I have to mention the obvious caveat that according to reports, NJ’s owner could give 2 spits about paying the luxury tax, and that that in itself could be enticing for players, knowing that their owner won’t shy away from surrounding them with talent.

Hey guys….Lou Williams is the real deal. All you guys that wanted a Jamal Crawford type…you got him and he’s from HERE, wants to be here and he comes at a great price.
Lou Williams also PLAYS DEFENSE so he isn’t a liability when he’s on the court.
The guy that seems on the outside looking in is Jeff Teague…who we may have to trade but I’m comfortable with having 3 point guards on the roster because then we can do what we were meant to do and that’s RUN.
I do agree that we need another Small Forward type to make it fit…. ANTHONY RANDOLPH would be ideal because then we can slide Josh to the 3

I’m just glad that Josh won’t be depended on to finish games. Lou WIlliams becomes Craig Kimbrell.
I suspect that when Ferry makes his offer to Orlando (which I think happens once the Joe trade is official tomorrow), he will offer Horford, Teague, Jenkins and maybe a draft pick. Maybe by offering youth + production, we won’t have to take back an awful contract.
For me, the addition of Lou makes a world of difference. Add Pietrus and some fillers and call it a summer.
BTW, if we keep Zaza, it will be the first time Howard has had a competent back-up since what’s his name left for Phoenix.

Well this makes too much sense to actually happen:
The Rockets, in the latter scenario, would push to acquire Bynum from the Lakers while furnishing the Magic with a package of future draft picks and cap-friendly contracts to set Orlando up for a full-fledged roster reload. Sources confirmed a HoopsWorld.com report that the three-team trade construction that sends Bynum to the Rockets instead of the Magic — with Orlando said to be concerned about its ability to re-sign Bynum for the long term — gained traction Tuesday. The key elements of the three-team proposal, sources said, call for the Lakers to acquire Howard and the Rockets — realizing their longrunning quest to acquire a top-20 player — to take back the mercurial Bynum as he enters the final year of his contract. Potential 3-team trade for Dwight Howard hits a snag
By Josh Robbins, Orlando Sentinel
3:26 p.m. EST, July 10, 2012
A possible blockbuster trade between the Orlando Magic and the Brooklyn Nets that would send Dwight Howard to Brooklyn is losing momentum after a third team involved in those talks pulled out of the discussions.
The Cleveland Cavaliers, a potential destination for unrestricted free agent Kris Humphries and other trade pieces, are no longer a part of the talks, Yahoo! Sports is reporting.

Honestly I don’t think we need to trade for D12 we can just max him out in FA next summer…it doesn’t matter where he is traded at this point he is gonna opt out…we should be going after Westbrook or rondo in a trade. As for the current roster this team can compete. Add a scoring wing and we would be a 4-5 seed. Current roster 6-8 seed with a loaded east

I like the signing by itself. Lou is definitely worth that price and this team needs more players who can score and get to the free throw line.
I wonder how this long-term contract impacts a potential trade for Dwight though. All that Joe and Marvin salary dumping means nothing if they are going to just take up that cap room with more non-superstars. Maybe Ferry sees him stepping in to the starting PG position for this season if Teague is included in a trade package for Dwight?

Only Draft picks for D12, SMH
Hawks have the best proposal than Laker or Rockets.
Magic get 2 first plus a starting center in Zaza who is only 28years old.
Magic get and all star PF in Horford 26years old.
Magic get Devin and expiring contract.

“NEJAH DAVENPOOP-You’ve really been pushing this get Dwight at all cost of blow the team up agenda. If fans won’t pay to see a team that’s capable of making the playoffs, featuring a 2 time Allstar and All NBA OC/PF(Horford), an All Star caliber PF(JSmith), a young, quick, fast, athletic, up and coming PG(Teague), and one of the NBAs most productive backup centers(ZPachulia) and PFs(IJohnson), what makes you think fans will spend money to see a bunch of draft picks lose?”
You are proving my point. If fans are not showing up to see a playoff team with no superstars and no shot at a title, what’s the point of keeping them together when you could get the same result at the box office by blowing up the team?
I can tell you this — attendance will almost certainly increase significantly if Dwight comes here, and even more so if trading for Dwight results in CP3 coming here next season. It is worth the gamble for a franchise that has never had that much excitement in its history.
“The Nets are in he process of blowing up their roster to get what they want, and it still won’t make them into a championship caliber team. All they will have is a starting 4 of DHoward, GWallace, JJohnson, and DWilliams. They’ve already traded 5 of their bench players to us for JJ, and they’ll have to trade MBrooks, KHumphries, SWilliams, and at least 1 other player, to get Howard.
They’ll be filling out the bulk of their roster with minimum contract vets just like we had to do. No team that I know of has ever won an NBA title with a starting 5, no matter how good they are, and no bench to speak of.”
Uh… were you sleeping when the Miami Heat blew up their team to get their 3 superstars together and filled out the rest of the roster with minimum contract vets? Worked out pretty nicely for them.
In a related story, Rashard Lewis is about to take the minimum to go to Miami. I am not a Rashard Lewis fan, but the point is, veterans will take the minimum to play on superstar-laden teams where they think they can win a ring.

Teague is the one likely to to be traded for the simple fact that Devin Harris is simply a better player.
Teague, Devin, Lou, John Jenkins, Anthony Morrow is just too much. Devin, Lou, Jenkins, Morrow can work.
I’m not sold on John Jenkins, thought it was a bad pick from the get go, so maybe he and Teague can bring back a SF…decent one.
Keep Morrow because Morrow has proven he can light it up at the NBA level and he averaged 12 ppg in 26 minutes which is not too shabby. 6′5 210…he’s big enough to play and start at SG for now.

Lou Williams for the midlevel?
What’s not to like?
Sure, he is undersized but he is a more willing passer than most gunners, gets to the line at terrific pace and I am always a strong advocate for bringing homeboys.
I am sure that Lou’s mom – who always put on a show when his kid was in town – is happy like hell and that this move will help the Hawks sell more tickets and reach deeper into the community for support.
Also, this either a move to come just before Dwights trade or at least a good attempt at keeping Josh interested in what the Hawks are trying to accomplish.
Simply put:
PHI will miss him and regret it – I don’t think Nick Young brings the same to the table – and we have now moved a step closer to – at least – remain very competitive.
Rod,
As for your commentaries directed to me:
I never said that Jamal was useless, only that LD did not knew how to use him.
Also, I like Lou better. Seems to have more “fire” in him, more emotion and IMO although he is indeed a gunner, I think he is a better team player than Jamal who many times looks like is playing on his own.
I’ve seen quite a few games with Lou and his ISO plays end many times with a dish for an easy bucket which is something that seldom occurs with Jamal.
Superb job so far Danny, now get us Howard and a real coach.
PS: since Jenkins was not Danny’s pick, I see him as a possible trade chip.

Staying in LA would pay him more and allow him to play with Blake Griffin and… pretty much nobody. Coming here would mean less money but he would join a clearly better team.
Like Dwight, that extra year is probably a huge key for CP3 in terms of where he will sign, but I don’t think it is that unlikely that he comes here, especially since he wanted the Hawks to draft him out of college.

As long as there aren’t 4 or 5 gunners on a team I’m perfectly fine with it. As a 6th man that’s exactly the player I want you to be. Jack it up. Harden, Crawford, Lou Williams, Nate Robinson, Nick Young, Marshon Brooks….same guy.
That’s the reason Lou can’t start though. That mentality is good in spurts. So Devin Harris will have to start (even though he’s kind of a gunner himself…sorta).

According to the AJC’s Michael Cunningham, Ferry has reached out the Magic in hopes to swing a deal that would bring Dwight Howard back to his hometown of Atlanta.
The Hawks have engaged the Magic in trade talks involving Howard, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions. That person did not want to be identified because the teams involved have not discussed the negotiations publicly.
The Hawks could offer Orlando better players than the Nets. But Atlanta could run the risk of trading away valuable assets only to lose Howard in free agency when his contract expires after next season.
Howard has given no indication he’s willing to commit beyond next season to any team other than Brooklyn. He recently told Yahoo Sports that if a team other than the Nets acquired him, he planned to play out his contract and become a free agent next summer.
Truth be told, this is probably the best trade partner Orlando will find. And if we want to completely tell the truth, it’s probably the best place for Howard to land.
He would be able to team up with Al Horford or Josh Smith, whichever doesn’t get shipped to Orlando, and he can spend all next season convincing Chris Paul to join him. All the while, he’d be the biggest star in a growing Atlanta market. Win-win for both Orlando and Atlanta.
But of course, Howard won’t realize this and will squash any chance of this happening by threatening not to re-sign in Atlanta.

So the Lou Williams deal for the Hawks couldn’t be more than 4 years, 21.4 million given a 5M start point and 4.5% raises.

Devin Harris is much better than teague and more intelligent and a true point guard.

Hawks, I’m told, still think they’re alive in Dwight trade chase. With plenty of pieces to offer and Josh Smith to lobby Howard to stay

If Devin Harris is on this roster to start the season, I wonder what will happen if Ludacris comes to a game and they see each other. Maybe it will be like this

Come on this team is just as good if not better than last year. Kinda like the Nuggets but we have better players than them honestly. A shooting Big Like Kaman will do wonders for Al and Josh, if we have to go with what we have. We will remain competitive, but I really believe we are gonna get Dwight. That is still blowing my mind because I never thought that would be possible in a 100 years!!!!

If anything bringing Lou in makes me think Ferry is definitely going for D12. There are just too many guards to not assume that he’s thinking about losing one them.

Jeff Teague > Devin Harris
Trust me as of right now yes Harris was an all-star, but that’s the key word was.
Not only that using that joke of a game to ever justify someone over another it’s down right stupid.
Plus Teague is younger many more years ahead of him vs. Harris who is aging and who knows how fast. We don’t know if he’ll be Mike Bibby or Steve Nash.

The Hawks are not seriously going after dwight howard, they just dumped salary because the owners didnt want to pay, not to win a championship. They want you to believe they are going after dwight, if he doesnt come, which he won’t, they can say they are trying to bring a winner, and scapegoat dwight like most have done JJ. Lou Williams a 7 time all star, oh, thats what he has to be to be better than JJ. No CP3, most people are naming players, that arent close to the players we had on the roster last year. THIS TEAM WILL BE MOVED…there is no money to be made in the ATL, without a superstar, and there is not one coming.

Harris is 29, hasnt peak. Knows how to distribute the rock, has speed, and size, can score and is a man. and has smarts.
Teague is young dumb, and doent have the skill set of Harris nor the maturity.

Ferry is NOT going to offer/trade with Orlando UNLESS Howard WILL SIGN WITH THE HAWKS. A trade can probably be worked out between the teams BUT Dwight has to sign a deal with the Hawks and that is probably true for ALL teams. Even the Nets. Howard might get there and change his mind unless he is ONLY wanting to go to the Nets to drain the owner for everything he is worth with holdouts, raises, extensions, etc. If that was my plan the Nets would be the ONLY place to go too. Maybe the ATL connections will sway Dwight more than money…. doubt it but its possible. Josh would have to want to stay of course and also recruit Dwight.
But I like Danny Ferry’s post earlier and nobody commented on that signing Lou was to keep Josh in ATL and not to get Dwight. If it did make Dwight take another look at ATL great. But it was for resigning Josh.

I hope Pape Sy, Derick Caracter, Cedric Benson, and Jeremy Hazell make the team. They give us quality depth a combination of shooters, shot blockers, perimeter defense, and and guards that drive to the basket and get to the line. Were definitly deeper than last year with this group once they get chemistry our 2nd unit will be fun to watch! Especially when you add Ivan, Jenkins, and Mike Scott to the mix.

I think Lou was added to the roster because ths team lacked a closer. What other playoff-tested “closers” were available for $5M? I think Ferry is making basketball moves, not trying to create that Atlanta Avengers (bruthas, assemble!). What he doesn’t want to see from his arena seat is a poorly executed play that breaks down and we don’t have a guy capable of making something out of nothing.
