Atlanta Hawks: Camp report

Notes gathered before nearly crashing my car while taking a call on Louis Williams deal and then trying to tweet the news on my freakin’ phone. . . .

  • Pape Sy is back, baby! That’s exciting enough on its own but Sy got me really hyped by showing up looking ripped. Seriously, dude is muscled-up. “I tried to work on my body to get stronger on the court,” he said. “Now I feel great.”
  • Larry Drew on Sy: “He’s been in that weight room. He’s gotten stronger. When he goes to the basket, you can see when he takes contact he can still get his shot off. That’s a pro move to take contact and get your shot off.”
  • As mentioned a few weeks ago, the Hawks finally have abandoned their plan to try to make Sy a point guard. It was pretty obvious after his first couple of summer games in 2010 that his NBA future is not at the point. “I feel good as a two guard,” Sy said. “I am trying to get to the hoop and I work on my shot. I feel better now. Playing the two may be more easier for me.”
  • The Hawks have a hole on their roster on the wing and Sy certainly has the size to play there. He’s always had some potential as a wing defender. Drew said Sy could play some small forward in smaller lineups.
  • “Pape has really gotten better,” Drew said. “I’ve always been intrigued by his size, his ability to get to the basket, his strength. He knows how to draw fouls when he goes to the cup. His shot has improved. Defensively he’s aggressive. I think this summer league will be really good for him to see where he measures up at this level.”
  • John Jenkins signed his rookie deal. He’ll make about $2.5 million guaranteed over the next two years with Atlanta holding options for two additional seasons.
  • So Jenkins is, like, rich. “It won’t change me at all,” he said. “My parents won’t let it happen and the people around me won’t let it happen. It’s also not who I am. I’m a very, very cheap person. I might get a nice car, not much else. I’m very blessed just to be in the NBA.”
  • There’s no big secret about the summer focus for Jenkins. “Everyone knows he’s capable of making shots, everybody knows when he’s on the floor you can’t leave him,” Drew said. “But defensively he’s got to get better and he knows that. He’s already said, ‘Coach, just tell me what you need for me to do and I’ll be studying film, I’ll be studying tape, I want to get better in that area.’ He’s a great kid. I’m happy that he’s part of our organization.”
  • Jenkins is wearing No. 12. He initially asked for No. 21 but, well, you know. Jenkins then asked for No. 23, his college number, but Lou Hudson already wore it very well for the Hawks.
  • Mike Scott already knows you want him to be a small forward: “I’ve been asked that question so many times. I see myself as a four. I’m comfortable as a four but doing three stuff. If I have a mismatch, a bigger guy on me I’m going around or a smaller guy on me I’m posting up. In order for me to transition to three I have to be able to guard a three. That’s something I’m still working on.”
  • At Virginia, Scott developed an effective face-up game. Good idea since it’s a big reason he will get a shot in the league. “I always had a pretty good touch,” he said. “Once I realized I wasn’t going to be able to dunk on everybody, I started working on other aspects of my game. Watching a lot of Kevin Love, Chris Bosh, Kevin Garnett—big guys that can shoot from that pick-and-pop range.”
  • Scott has pretty good length but isn’t very physically imposing. Drew: “Undersized, but I do think he has the strength to play that [four] position. He’s a phenomenal pick-and-pop shooter so he’s going to have to play to his strengths and get better at his weaknesses. A big part of playing that four is understanding what you can get away with defensively and what you can’t. But I do think he has the strength to hold his own down there.”
  • Drew added that Scott “is not an Ivan Johnson as far as strength is concerned” but who is among us lesser beings?
  • Keith “Kito” Benson is back, too. Word is he looked much the same during today’s scrimmage–timid and getting knocked around–but Benson says he’s gotten stronger and plans to have an “aggressive mindset” this time around.
  • Benson: “I think I have a lot better chance this year because of summer league and spending more time with the coaches. I think I have a good chance to show what I can do and show my skills for a longer period of time. Last year it was about five days.”
  • Lester Conner will coach the summer league entry.
  • Danny Ferry came out for a moment while reporters were inside the practice facility but didn’t address us media types.

Am I the only one who kind of likes DeShawn Stevenson? I know he brings nothing offensively, but Williams, Morrow and Jenkins fill that void. Stevenson started 54 games for a title-winning Dallas team. He’s not a bum. Every team needs a defensive ace, and he could be ours.

I see that Sixers list and have to wonder if Thaddeus Young is available because you have to move Josh or Al to bring in Iggy.

But D12 issues first, then you can move to TY or Iggy. TY was a Techster for one year and might fill in very well here. Another young guy to play on the wing but he makes Marvin level money for 4 years…..Iggy has 2 years left at 30M.

DrmaryB- I’ll have to disagree with you on Teague not being a PG. While hes not the classic pass first PG (Rondo/Nash) he’s pretty good and still developing. Sessions would be a nice addition as a back up PG-quick pass first type PG….I just dont see Devin Harris being here. Teague/Session and Lou occasionally works for me at PG.

Ray I dont know if we signed him yet I read on hoopshype we were looking ointo getting him.

I wouldnt trade Al /Teague for Jefferson that man has digressed since the knee injury. He looks okay but not worth that trade.
I see the US team is playing the DR tomorrow….I wonder if Jumpshot Al will show up or again be the 3rd best player on the team. Someone said it earlie but I cringe everytime I see him making a back to the basket move. Its a right handed drive to the lane for a jump hook or nothing …Ive seen this show before – Serious question -are we cool with Al just developing a jump shot while his rebounding and post game stays the same. From the looks of things we will have plenty of gunners. Who gives us points in the post.

That mans post game leavs alot to be desired.

Slim JR-U were spot on Nichols looks pretty good so far -granted playing against summer league talent. He has nice footwork and a soft touch around the rim. Dude gonna be dangerous when he adds the jumper and experience to go with his post game.

I was playing a pickup game at La Fitness yesterday and a cupl things stood out…im old Lol but still effective shooting the rock and passing. also these yungns today are all flash and no substance-And 1 mixtape tour has really ruined alot of these dudes. Sum guy says ” im going to walk on at UGA next yr”
What??? C’mon son – Im only 6′4 and about 215 if you cant score on me at will- maybe trying out for clark Atlanta is a better option. 6′6 200 PF on a D1 squad is a pipe dream…….

Al Thornton is playing in the summer league right now.

Gerald Green seems like a logical fit for the sf position to me. He can shoot and finish at the rim.
I know Stevenson is supposedly a defensive ace but I still dont want him on the team. Dude shot under 30% last year from the field and from beyond the arc.. I rather have Damien back than to have Stevenson. Get Green and Randolph and I think we might be even deeper than last year.

I may have missed this story but what is the contract status of TMac, Pargo and Willie Green? Are they still with the Hawks and could they be used as expiring contracts to send to Orlando? The Magic have been thought to prefer those type contracts in return for Dwight.

I hear ya, CP. I just think Stevenson fills a niche for us. We have plenty of guys who can fill it up. But, do we have anyone who can stop the other guy from filling it up? That’s where Stevenson has value to this roster.

Their contracts have already expired and they are unrestricted free agents. The Hawks have not yet renounced their cap holds, so they potential could be used in a sign and trade, assuming they agreed to the terms.

Buddy,

From what we have see so far, Ferry does not seem the type of guy who will easily be coaxed into a bad contract.

He has been smooth and precise as a sniper.

Almost zero rumours on JJ being shopped, zero rumours on Marvin being shopped and zero rumours on Lou being signed.

Things just got public when done.

Obviously, Howard is a different matter since it’s impossible to keep away a rumour on a player of that magnitude and visibility which is being actively shopped.

So, I am confident that Ferry will still have a few nice deals up his sleeve that we are not aware of at all and that he is milking the Howard situation to the max in order not to be subject to requests for more.

My view is that Ferry is making a low ball offer to ORL (Horford, Harris, maybe another filler and a pick) and when the time is right will increase the offer with Teague and maybe even Zaza.

Vava, Ferry is negotiating from a position of strength. Assuming that Orlando doesn’t want to build around Brook Lopez on a max contract with bad feet (is that too much of a stretch?), Orlando has few options. They can ship bad contracts to Houston and receive a ton of picks. This is a crap shoot. None of those picks may pan out, and Orlando is left with nothing.

Bynum won’t extend with Orlando and has health and character issues. The Lakers have no picks. That leaves the Hawks. Al Horford is quite simply the best player Orlando can possibly get in a Dwight trade. Maybe they don’t want Horford because they want to tank and get high lottery picks. I’ve heard that’s not the case because Rich DeVos is too old to wait around for a rebuild.

So Danny Ferry is holding the only All-NBA center who is a leader and a high character person, who happens to be from Florida, who is low risk and who would make Rob Hennigan seem like he got something substantive out of trading Dwight. Nobody else has what the Hawks have to offer. Therefore, I agree that Ferry is probably lowballing. But I don’t think the final offer is going to include three rotation players for the Hawks. Why should Ferry gut our roster to get Dwight? We can just sign him outright as a free agent next summer. Bad contracts from Orlando? Forget about it.

Get real people, it’s not up to Ferry or the Magic whether Dwight gets traded to the ATL. It’s entirely up to Dwight. The Hawks have said repeatedly that they won’t trade for him unless he agrees to an extension, and he’s yet to even offer a hint that he would. The ASG is in this to make money, and risking the franchises future on the whims of an immature, egotistical player like Dwight would be downright stupid. I’m surprised that some of you don’t see that.

If you think having 3 of his home boys on the team, kissing his anus like the Magic have been doing for almost 2 seasons, and giving in to his demand to fire the HC and GM, will persuade him to resign with the Hawks, you’re being totally delusional.

After seeing how he’s already screwed his current franchise, DFerry would have to be completely stupid, and/or desperate, to risk his job and the financial future of a franchise that’s already stretched to the limit financially, to the whims of someone like Dwight. I’m with BIG RAY, I’ll be glad when this is over so you DHoward lovers can get back to your Horford hating BS.

I’m an ATLANTA HAWKS FAN, and I’ll remain an ATLANTA HAWKS FAN whether we sign Howard or not. All of you BANDWAGON JUMPING, PLAYER HATING AND/OR LOVING FANS, can roll with the wagon right on out of here if you don’t like what transpires. I’m going to remain right here and support my Hawks no matter what.

You can read these blogs and actually get an idea of why Josh blamed Atlanta Fans for him wanting to get traded. There is some serious LYING, DENYING, FINGER POINTING BS going on about certain players.

Vava,

“Are they similar? Yes, of course, but Lou does not look as autistic as Crawford out there in my opinion.”

If there is anything that our debates have proven its that I don’t value your opinion. You stated that Lou Williams was a better passer than Jamal, I proved you wrong. Your opinion means nothing because it has been incorrect about 95% we have debated, except on Horford. The money is not relevant because Jamal would have resigned for about 5 to 6 mil, which has always been my argument. Lou Williams is a mini Jamal Crawford, and you love that pickup, but continuosly hate on Jamal which lets me know simply that you are a hater, and really don’t understand the game of basketball. Hate on hater.

Jamal Crawford Career Playoff stats: 30.8 mpg, 38%FG, 35%3p, 82%FT, 1.3rpg, 2.5apg, 15.4 ppg
Lou Williams Career Playoff stats: 27.5 mpg, 35%FG, 17%3p, 78%FT, 2.1 rpg, 3.0 apg, 11.5 ppg

So in the playoffs Jamal Does everything offensively better than Lou Williams (Neither plays any defense), but you hate Jamal, and you love the Lou Williams pickup. LOL. But I’m supposed to value your opinion. SMH

High-Sider:

“Given the history of Atlanta Hawks’ management blunders, how can you [vava74] criticize the Los Angeles Clippers’ management?”

WTF does this have to do with the FACT that being signed by the Clippers is NOT A VOUCHER of a player quality, quite the contrary.

The Clippers have been considered for AGES as the worst run franchise in the NBA and for me, CONTINUE to be poorly run, in spite of landing Paul last year.

What you said in reply to my post has nothing to do with what I said apart from the fact that whoever was signed by the Hawks (pre-Ferry) could obviously be subject to the same type of negative judgement, derived from the entity doing the signing and awarding the contract.

ie. a franchise which overpaid Bibby, Marvin, Mo Evans and JJ could not be relied to be the bearing of a player’s correct market and basketball worth.

The fact that Hawks have been so poorly run does not invalidate the fact that Clips have also been poorly run.

Just look at:

- DeAndre’s contract;
- the fact that they ditched one of their most important bench pieces – Reggie Evans – for a bag of chips (he will be missed there);
- the extension granted to Del Negro (!!!);

“Ken S,

If traded to the Hawks, he’s not going to resign no matter what..

Maybe so. BUT…If the Hawks have his bird rights, and he chooses to sign outright with another team, then he can only get a 4 year contract, whereas the Hawks could offer him a 5th year, worth $20+ mil. Would Dwight Howard really leave $20+ mil on the table?

Also:
1) How many teams have the available cap space next off-season to give Dwight a max contract?
2) Of those teams, how many of them would be on Dwight’s wish list?

Therefore, even if he doesn’t want to stay with the Hawks, his best option may be for the Hawks to do a sign and trade deal. And if so, we could sign and trade him to the Nets, and recoup some of the talent (especially multiple first round picks) we gave up to get him.

Plus we would be under the cap, so we don’t have to take back equal salary from the Nets (which Orlando has to do). IMO, its a win win. We would have one year to convince him and Josh to resign. And if they dont, we would get at least 2 first round picks for Dwight, and another first round pick for Josh if he chooses to leave as well.”

Rod,

Don’t be an idiot:

The sample is not big enough to compare:

If a player (JAMAL) faces 10 times an average/good defensive team like ORL (with 4 games being blowouts in which ORL was not even bothering to exert any effort to defend after 1 quarter) and 7 times an average defensive team like MIL – so, 17 out of 23 games of playoff experience – and once faces on the remaining 6 games a very good defensive team (CHI), he is bound to have better numbers than a player whose playoff experience was 100% against top defensive teams: CHI and MIA.

I see a lot of you feel the signing of LWilliams has something to do with DHoward. Well, what if it had everything to do with the fact that our 2 PGs, JTeague and DHarris, are in the final yr of their contracts and he represents a safety net. Besides, a 4 guard rotation of Teague, Harris, Williams, and Jenkins isn’t bad at all. I believe Stephenson will have to beat out Pape Sy for a roster spot.

What concerns me the most about the Hawks, if DHoward isn’t acquired, is LDrew. He’s on a 1yr contract extension, which means he might pull a WOODSON and rely heavily on our vet players, while not being motivated to develop, play, or even retain any of our rookies on the roster.

Ken S,

The Hawks have said repeatedly that they won’t trade for him unless he agrees to an extension,.

I don’t think the Hawks have said they wont. If I’m not mistaken, what has been reported is they don’t want to, or they are skeptical/hesitant, but I don’t recall reading anywhere saying the Hawks WILL not trade for Dwight if he doesn’t sign an extension.

The ASG is in this to make money, and risking the franchises future on the whims of an immature, egotistical player like Dwight would be downright stupid. I’m surprised that some of you don’t see that..

So if the Hawks traded for Dwight, don’t you think Philips would be packed (more than usual) for the 2012-2013 season? Wouldn’t the Hawks have more nationally televised games (with Dwight)? Wouldn’t we see more merchandise sales? Wouldn’t there be marketing campaigns? Isn’t that more money?

And a Hawks team with Josh and Dwight will be better than a Hawks team with Al and Josh (imo). If so, that would mean more home playoff games, so more money.

And next year, If Dwight doesn’t resign, then move him in a sign and trade to NJ, and get 2 or 3 first round picks from the Nets for him.

Forgot to add another top grade defensive opponent which Lou Williams faced BOS.

So, Lou’s playoff experience was 100% against:

MIA in 2011 (4 games) – so, against a top rate defensive team
CHI and BOS in 2012 (13 games) – all games against top rate defensive teams

Jamal’s playoff experience was:

MIL and ORL in 2010 (11 games, of which the 4 against ORL were blowouts in which ORL did not even had to continue to play good D after the 1st quarter)
ORL and CHI in 2011 (12 games, of which 6 were against a ragged/average defensively ORL outfit and 6 games against a top rate defense)

Jamal’s sample should be limited to his production against CHI in 2011 which was the only series in which he faced a top rate defensive team in a competitive environment, given that the ORL series in 2010 was what it was.

Northcyde is rollin’ over in his grave.

********************

More like turning over from my side to sleep on my stomach.

It’s funny though. If people hated ISO JOE, what do they think Lou Williams is? Like Rod says, he plays almost exactly like Jamal, with the exception of him being able to draw more fouls when he goes to the hole. If given the choice between the two, I’m taking Lou over Jamal.

When you have hired gunners like that, the only thing that needs to be done is to watch how they’re playing. If he’s hot, ride the hot hand. If he’s cold, sit him on the bench. Don’t feel obligated to play him 25 – 30 minutes a night.

The issue with Lou is that he is more than likely not going to simply be given the green light to just shoot away, especially if we still have Teague and Devin on the roster. It’ll be interesting to see which guy is moved. I can’t imagine the Hawks keeping 3 quality PGs.

I’ll say it again. If we get Howard, then the Nets don’t get. They will max out Lopez and effectively have zero cap space, esp not enough for D12. So his number one choice will be gone. The only team we’d have to be scare of at that point is Dallas. Ferry roll the dice and bring him in. Even if he chose to go to Dallas, he’d be giving up 25 million dollars.

Actually ESPN has been reporting the Hawks on the list. One reason is as Buddy Grizzard said is ESPN wants him in NYC or LA. ESPN is just like the national media is with Obama, they want Obama in office so they skew the news. Another reason may be that ESPN reporters know that maybe the Hawks are just setting there with a lowball offer, who knows. We dont know what conversations Danny has had or what he has offered Orlando in exchange.

I personally would make the deal with D12 signing an extension, becasue when the offseason comes around the team that acquires him will have the upperhand with the next contract.

SLIMJR-Wouldn’t any team that traded for DHoward have Bird Rights on him, and don’t you think he knows that? If he says he won’t sign an extension for any team other than the nets, wouldn’t you think that’s an indication that the extra Bird right yr isn’t a concern for him?

Stop being stuck on stupid and accept the fact that Dwight isn’t coming here unless he commits to an extension, and it has to be before the Hawks commits to any trade for him. DFerry isn’t stupid enough to put himself in the same unenviable situation that the Magic’s former GM was in with Howard. Stop continuing to be so selfdeluding.

“It’s funny though. If people hated ISO JOE, what do they think Lou Williams is? Like Rod says, he plays almost exactly like Jamal, with the exception of him being able to draw more fouls when he goes to the hole. If given the choice between the two, I’m taking Lou over Jamal.”

We actually agree on this. The one issue I have thaough is I think Jamal gets to the line and shoots a higer percentage from the line than Lou.

In the playoffs Jamal has played a total of 23 games, and gone to the line 109 times.
In the playoffs Lou Williams has played a total of 30 games and gone to the line 116 times.

They are the same guy. Who you would choose is your opinion. Jamal is a better playoff performer, so at this point I would choose Jamal, but I like both guys.
