The Hawks are interested in free agent forward Anthony Randolph, as reported today by Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports. The Hawks also remain in contact with the Magic about trade possibilities for Dwight Howard.
But the more pressing concern for the Hawks is signing a small forward after they agreed to trade away Marvin Williams and Joe Johnson.
“We have to look at the wing area to bring somebody in that can help us,” Drew said. “With having the six spots filled [including] the two draft picks on the roster, solidifying on the wing becomes more of a priority than a ‘big.’ We could add another big but, right now, certainly the priority is strengthening the wing area and then possibly adding another big.”
As things stand now, Atlanta’s options include playing one of Josh Smith, Anthony Morrow or DeShawn Stevenson at small forward. Smith was able to play the wing effectively in certain matchups last season but neither he nor Morrow or Stevenson is a natural for the position.
The Hawks are interested in Rashard Lewis and Courtney Lee. They’ve also reportedly inquired about O.J. Mayo.
Other free-agent wings still on the board include Matt Barnes, Grant Hill, Carlos Delfino, Antawn Jamison, Mickael Pietrus, C.J. Miles and Tracy McGrady.
The Hawks can offer a contract that starts as high as the non-taxpayer mid-level exception maximum of $5 million. It appears that the first wave of free-agent signings isn’t quite over as players look for money and/or contending teams to join. The Hawks could still be a pretty good team next season but clearly no longer are as attractive to free agents as they were last season, when they could sell the possibility of a strong postseason run.
With that in mind, expect the Hawks to zero in on free agents to sign once the market settles.
“There’s been some surprising things that have happened with free agents,” Drew said. “Our stand is just to continue to look at possibilities that can help our ball club. There are still some interesting names out there. We’ve had contact with a number of free agents and we want to bring in guys that can play right away, whether they start or come off the bench.”

now that Horford has more competition lets see if he still makes the All Star roster….. now that KG is listed as a Center he will compete with Horford for an All Star roster spot along with Tyson Chandler, Okafor, and Nene. and don’t forget Dwight Howard….. if Dwight Howard goes out west than replace him with Andrew Bynum or Pau Gasol.

Again if I knew LD was to be the coach after Woodson might as well had stuck with Woodson he at least got Josh to take less jumpshots than LD could ever say.

T-s still can’t figure out that I’m a Hawks fan and not a Horford fan, other than the fact that he’s a team member. I defend him against some outright lies, but I do that for other players too.
I lost a lot of faith in Horford in the 2011 playoffs. He’s going to have to get back in the paint to change my mind, which he seemed to be doing until he got hurt.

Jenkins may earn a starting over Morrow if he can shoot lights out like he did in college..Jenkins should be putting up anywhere between 500-1000 shots a day to get ready for his 1st professional season.Show this franchise how good his shot really is. Larry loves shooters!
Morrow is too streaky..This guy need to come off the bench..[Think of a missed jumper in transition like a turnover] in some situations it deflates the team and screws up chemistry. See Josh and All struggles in 4th quarters the past two seasons….

Chicago Tribune is reporting Kirk will sign for two years at $3m per season, the mini-MLE. Kirk may have been overpaid at $7m per season, but he’s definitely not overpaid at $3m per season. Those of you who kept screaming that Kirk should not have taken PARGO’s minutes after his recovery should watch the following development with interest: Will PARGO get a roster spot with an NBA team this season?
Pargo was helped in obtaining a roster spot with the Hawks by his friendship with Joe Johnson. Pargo played so badly in the BOS series that Drew’s decision to play him ahead of Hinrich likely cost the Hawks a chance to face MIA in the ECF. The playoffs exposed Pargo for the journeyman he is. I think it’s unlikely any team will pick him up for this season, and it will be just like Josh Powell. Remember Powell? Drew’s first big man off the bench in the last ORL series? He was so well regarded around the league that he ended up playing in Puerto Rico last season. I see the same fate for Pargo.
One of the biggest advantages of the Ferry hire is that Ferry is unlikely to retain several of the players Drew has used in the past two seasons who are among the worst players in the league. Players in that conversation that Drew has given playoff minutes to over the last two seasons: Pargo, Powell, Willie Green, Vlad Rad, Jason Collins and Erick Dampier. Sund thought he had the best bench in the NBA, but wait and see how many of these guys have jobs in the NBA this year. The Joe Johnson trade has already vastly improved the Hawks’ bench, and I doubt Ferry burns the few remaining spots on any of the scrubs that LD is in love with.
I like JustSayinB’s idea, give Larry Drew enough rope and watch him hang himself. Remember, Ferry is big on loyalty. When Dan Gilbert went over his head to fire Mike Brown in an attempt to placate LeBron James, Ferry resigned his position as Cav’s GM. Larry Drew is not a loyal person. He stabbed Mike Woodson in the back. This is not the type of person or coach Ferry wants or would have retained if the decision was left to him. Watch Ferry hang back and let LD get himself fired.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3834/gamelog;_ylt=An_pmT8IAPTu2to4HFCxSn0CPaB4
Look at the Josh’s game log last year.
Sure, you’ll find a few duds, but the vast majority of the times, Josh was carrying us filling up the stat-sheet everywhere.
EVERYWHERE!!!
People have to realize that Josh’s all round contribution (defending the rim, passing, poaching the lanes, being energetic, …) is more important than his point per possession stats or his shooting percentage.
YOU CAN LIVE with some bad shots whilst Josh is motivated and producing on every other facet of the game.
Last years’ regular season record, PROVES THAT. HE CARRIED US many many games and was, even for the non-fans this should be evident, AT LEAST as important as JJ.
Even during the BOS series, people have to realize that he posted a 22/18 and 4 assists and 1 block in his only complete game HEALTHY.
The rest of the way he played with a bum knee, against a fierce and dirty opponent (Garnett) who regained his past mojo and that was horribly assisted by the refs.
We lost game 2 against BOS because Josh went down and could hardly contribute in the 4th quarter.
Cope Josh’s injury, with refereeing favouring BOS and LD’s idiocy to go ISO-JJ to close games and you simply can’t allow yourself to put ANY GUILT on Josh for the Hawks not being in the second round.
The rest of the way he played valiantly, although SEVERELY LIMITED and that is why he settled too much for jumpers.
Did he shoot poorly during the series? Sure! Should have adapted his game to the injury situation but not settle for so many jumpers? Sure!
But when a series is a dog fight and you are not getting sufficient help down low – WE WERE MISSING ZAZA for crying out loud!!! (Zaza and Josh played fantastically together last year and we did not have that!!!!) and you are also not getting any respect from the refs and you are playing INJURED, you are bound to have poor shooting nights.
Finally, AT LEAST 10% of Josh’s missed jumpers came as last second shots out of failed ISO-JJ plays or other bad execution on offense plays like for instance when a wide open Marvin did not have the balls to shoot the rock.
Now, on JJ:
We will all miss JJ, even the ones which have been harping badly about him.
I know I will.
What we will not miss is his contract. It’s that simple.
Incredibly, Mark Bradley posted something true and accurate:
JJ was a victim of how Woody used him (ISO) and when the team evolved, he failed to re-adapt his game, in particular because we have an enabler as a coach, not a real commander.
JJ was capable to carry, going ISO, a team which did not have the respect of others – much alike other very good but not superstar players – but when the Hawks became a playoff team and opponents simply could not let him go off and have a good night since we now had other contributors good enough to make us competitive, opponents started to focus on JJ and he was simply not good enough to go against double and triple teams from top grade playoff teams.
Poor coaching again did not help: JJ lost his way and there was not good enough coaching – both Woody and LD – to make him an effective player again once the situation had changed.
Watch Game 1 of the BOS series again and see how JJ played during that first half: decisive, making the extra pass, ultra active, highly effective, all whilst shutting down Pierce…
That was a mirage of what he could have been for us during this new phase as a playoff team if we had a strong coach instead of an enabler.
Even if Brooklyn does not get Howard, look for them to get 50 wins with Deron and JJ as their back court. Avery and Deron will certainly have a huge effect on him.
Also, you should not forget – as Rod f CP said profusely in the past and recently again – JJ was one of the players in the NBA which faced more double teams and ONE OF THE MAIN reasons, IF NOT THE MAIN, was that the Hawks CONSTANTLY played 4 on 5.
Marvin was always an afterthought for opposing defenses, EVERYONE left him alone and even when he got the rock, since he could not drive and did not have the balls to shoot the rock when left open, THERE WAS ALWAYS a free rotating wing player to press JJ.
Freaking dumb enabler LD did nothing to change this until it was too late when he benched Marvin.
The problem is that this move – JJ to SF and Marvin to the bench – was made without any offense at the C slot (Zaza) and with a decaying SG (Hinrich), so it was kind of a “no move” since we were actually playing 3 on 5 with that line up and LD felt it necessary to go ISO-JJ to close games (which worked against bottom dwellers – as usual – but not against playoff teams).
We had a good team, our core was pretty good (you’ll realize that now that we will struggle to get to the playoffs (if we do not make any significant move).
We we did not have, was a real coach during this whole period.

LD was retained before Ferry came on the scene. My guess is he’ll be a lame duck this year with a somewhat patchwork roster (though you can’t really call it that with three starters on the squad). LD has already hung himself in my opinion, but he will have the slimmest of chances (maybe) to prove he’s not a scrub coach…..heh…heh…next summer Ferry shows us who he really wants on. the sidelines

At this stage I don’t think we’ll see any Hawks news till after this deals are done. Right now I think Danny Ferry has talked to the remaining guys Teague, Zaza, Horford, and Josh about where they stand and if they’ll commit.
Like I told people before Josh will commit he’s like any other player doesn’t want to be on a team that doesn’t care about winning. Honestly for the past 5 years since we got back to the playoffs out of the 5 it seemed like 3 times we didn’t care when we got punked by the Magic, punked out by a bulls team that we technically should have beaten that year at least.
Now we got punked out by a much older team that we shouldn’t have been punked by at all. If I was playing I’d feel the same as Josh did.
Still though any more news on FA’s and or trades probably won’t be seen until the 11th or later. So we got 3 days and counting.

Finally, on the Josh-Al debate, a few thoughts:
Al is more coachable, more disciplined, more stable, easier to figure out (for good and for bad).
Undoubtedly a very good player, but not remarkable now and not remarkable in the future.
He is exactly what he was said to be when he came out of college: a very good player which was NBA ready.
The problem with Al is that we need Big Ray to use his contacts within the law enforcement and launch a nationwide APB on his missing dog.
Without it, Al is too soft to be a real leader.
On the other hand, Josh is a unique and multi talented player who never had the privilege of being coached by a real coach having entered into the NBA straight from high-school.
I am firm believer that Josh could have been a much better player than he is or will be if he had been “coached”.
There is absolutely no problem with Josh’s dog… apart from the fact that he is not house trained and sometimes poos on our rug and that is what frustrates us.
I believe that there is still time to extract more out of his potential, but that will not happen with LD at the elm.
Our only hope if that Danny quickly gets LD on a pair of skates and outta here and brings someone who is able to communicate with Josh.

Josh is a stat sheet stuffer. A walking triple double. But it might be better to shift his positions since his shooting % is so low. Focus on SF rebounding And give some more shots to others to see if they can hit those elbow shots and if Teague is good in 1-5 pick and rolls.
Smith can stuff stats anywhere. But when he’s at SF he’s less open and passes more and is all around more coachable.

Josh Smith’s skill set is very similar to a young Shawn Marion, who was successful with Nash in Phoenix. Smith and Howard, who won the 2003 AAU national championship with the Atlanta Celtics, are still friends. Presumably, a trade for Smith would make the Lakers a more attractive destination for Howard. To get Howard, L.A. needs Smith. Like Howard, Smith wants to be traded and will be a free agent in 2013.
After dangling Gasol like marshmallows over a campfire for two seasons, there’s no way he can withstand the constant rumors while watching his value plummet, being misused as a stretch four in Mike Brown’s offense and becoming the Lakers fourth option behind Nash, Bryant and Bynum. His passing acumen wouldn’t have been as missed if the Lakers still ran Phil Jackson’s triangle offense, which executed offensive sets through Gasol in the high post.

If Jamal Crawford, who averaged 14.0ppg this past regular season, can only get $5mil. per yer (for his services), then Kirk Hinrich (who averaged 6.6ppg this past regular season) getting $3mil. per year (for his services) is fair market value for him (Hinrich) at this point in his career especially after his subpar performances over the last two seasons.
Not having Jamal Crawford in the 2012 playoffs is likely what cost the Hawks not facing the Heat in the ECF. Remember, Jamal Crawford was the Hawks’ new(est) “Boston Strangler” while he (Crawford) was a team member with the Hawks. Let’s face it; Hinrich’s post season averages of 5.7ppg, 2.0rpg and 1.0apg were not going to put the Hawks “over the top” in the 2012 playoffs. (SMH)
P.S. I actually thought the (lowest) mini-MLE was $2.5mil. per year. If that is the case, then Hinrich will be making $500K more than the (lowest) mini-MLE. I’m jus’ sayin’.
