Atlanta Hawks: Wings are the thing

The Hawks are interested in free agent forward Anthony Randolph, as reported today by Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports. The Hawks also remain in contact with the Magic about trade possibilities for Dwight Howard.

But the more pressing concern for the Hawks is signing a small forward after they agreed to trade away Marvin Williams and Joe Johnson.

“We have to look at the wing area to bring somebody in that can help us,” Drew said. “With having the six spots filled [including] the two draft picks on the roster, solidifying on the wing becomes more of a priority than a ‘big.’ We could add another big but, right now, certainly the priority is strengthening the wing area and then possibly adding another big.”

As things stand now, Atlanta’s options include playing one of Josh Smith, Anthony Morrow or DeShawn Stevenson at small forward. Smith was able to play the wing effectively in certain matchups last season but neither he nor Morrow or Stevenson is a natural for the position.

The Hawks are interested in Rashard Lewis and Courtney Lee. They’ve also reportedly inquired about O.J. Mayo.

Other free-agent wings still on the board include Matt Barnes, Grant Hill, Carlos Delfino, Antawn Jamison, Mickael Pietrus, C.J. Miles and Tracy McGrady.

The Hawks can offer a contract that starts as high as the non-taxpayer mid-level exception maximum of $5 million. It appears that the first wave of free-agent signings isn’t quite over as players look for money and/or contending teams to join. The Hawks could still be a pretty good team next season but clearly no longer are as attractive to free agents as they were last season, when they could sell the possibility of a strong postseason run.

With that in mind, expect the Hawks to zero in on free agents to sign once the market settles.

“There’s been some surprising things that have happened with free agents,” Drew said. “Our stand is just to continue to look at possibilities that can help our ball club. There are still some interesting names out there. We’ve had contact with a number of free agents and we want to bring in guys that can play right away, whether they start or come off the bench.”

Rufus,

No excuses for Marvin. He was never what they drafted him as. Never will be.

Josh has his issues, and I don’t know what you’ve been reading, but I for one have been telling it like it is about his self-induced problems.

Funny….Josh was our best player in the playoffs this year. “Excuses” and all…

Hall of Famer, Charles Barkley had “High Praise” for the old 2011-2012 Hawk Team, most of it cenetred around Joe, Josh, Al, and Marvin. I beleive his criticism went something like this,

” I hate watching the Hawks play. They are too soft. Joe Jonson is not the best player on this team,
they really suck, they are just plain turrible.”

But don’t hold your breath, his foot work and dribbling capabilities are atrocious!

Same could be said of Josh a couple years ago. He improved. With LD as his coach. Yeah…

But give him credit..He’ll pass the ball and usually make a good decision once the defender closes out on his mid-range pop!

I think we call that an assist….at least if the clown who receives the pass manages to SCORE…too bad so many of those passes went to butterfingers Zaza or worse…Marvin…

Strange how it turned into that after Drew’s dazzling genius offensive scheme that helped him win the HC job…but we never saw it. Man, I hope Ferry’s next move, if it’s not nabbing a superstar via trade or FA (in 2013) is finding us a real HC .

Larry Drew is the pink elephant in the room. Lot’s of robust chatter about who the Hawks management wants to bring in. Other teams are busy. But no one wants to talk about a coach that this Hawks team has had that was clearly outcoached by coaches of elite teams like Boston, Chicago, SanAntonio, Philly, etc. Fans excitement wanes even though we got rid of who we needed to get rid of and added some pieces. Hawks fans will really get excited when they hear news of Larry Drew leaving this team, and Danny Ferry hires a Phil Jackson or other high profile coach in this league. We’ve basically have no core. Josh, IMO-will be gone. Here is why I think he will be gone. Josh and AL is the last two core players on board. The Hawks will have to give up a lot to keep Josh past next year. Dwight Howard has a slim chance at coming to Atlanta unless he thinks that there’s a chance that he can win a championship with Josh and a new coach. Stan Van Gundy was a much better coach than Larry Drew. I’ll take Jeff Van Gundy over Drew. Who is Drew? LD was the sniveling underhanded company man that went over his boss head to Hawks management to try to sell them on firing coach Mike Woodson-who by the way-had turned the Hawks around from being a sub-500 non playoff team to at least 2nd round playoff team. Why has Drew done? Get to the playoffs. Drew has been living off the winning residue that was created while he was an assistant coach-which is what he should be right now. If Danny Ferry is serious about this Hawks team-who will be a team that has to reinvent itself-it has to be built on a solid foundation. That being said-Danny Ferry may be looking beyond this year, which means that he may keep LD-only to fire him next year-because now with JJ gone and new players, LD will have enough rope to you know what. LD being let go now will feel twice as good as when the Hawks got rid of Marvin.

One thing for Hawks fans (and Ferry) to keep in mind. If the Hawks struggle this year, Josh Smith will not resign with the Hawks (imo) unless he is convinced the Hawks will also sign another high level FA or 2.

So despite all the cap space, we could miss out on high level FA (Bynum, CP3, Harden, D12), and also lose Josh Smith to free agency.

Rufus,

People are not giving Josh a pass. Everybody understands that even the most talented must be coached. Doc Rivers’ people skills obviously played a big part in the unit the Boston Celtics showed on the floor. And there are some big egos out there (pierce, garnett, rondo). That’s one reason why Ray Allen ran – that lockerroom has too many Type A’s for him.
I believe we can find another swingman who can score and pass. I like Rudy Gay and for a one-year stopover- James Anderson, formerly of the Spurs. But Josh has SKILLS that are hard to come by – premier shot blocker and when motivated properly- very good inside-outside offensive threat.

On Monday, Howard told Yahoo! Sports that he would sign a long-term contract only with the Nets, but after the Nets’ trade with Atlanta for Johnson, the chances of Howard going to Brooklyn appeared dead.

In fact, several executives involved in the talks privately said there was no chance of Howard being traded to the Nets.

But the two clubs eventually rekindled talks about a potential Howard move.

As for other teams, the Lakers could offer Andrew Bynum, the Hawks could give Al Horford and Jeff Teague, and the Rockets have been assembling draft picks and assets to entice the Magic.

Hawks Trade Rumors

Atlanta can also offer Orlando a quality trade package, featuring Al Horford and Jeff Teague. Horford is one the league’s better centers, while Teague proved to be an emerging talent at the point guard position last season.

By already ridding themselves of Johnson’s mammoth contract, the Hawks can achieve their goal of getting a completely fresh start by swapping Horford and Teague for Howard. In Orlando’s case, the team receives two players that will finally get a chance to step into the spotlight.

If Horford can return to All-Star shape, he can partially fill the void in the paint left by Howard. Teague could also thrive in Orlando by finally getting the chance to become the No. 1 option at guard after being overshadowed by Johnson. Teague, a strong three-pointer shooter, could develop into an offensive threat if given a more prominent role in Orlando than he had in Atlanta.

And More D12 Trade Rumors-

“If the Houston Rockets are not able to obtain superstar center Dwight Howard this offseason, it will not be for a lack of effort.

The Rockets are in the midst of a flurry of trade activity that is apparently entirely geared toward them prying the Magic’s prized big man from Orlando.

CBS Sports’ Ken Berger shed some light on the pursuit:

The Houston Rockets continue to push hard to acquire draft picks and cap space in an effort to provide a package of assets that will entice the Orlando Magic to trade Dwight Howard, league sources told CBSSports.com Saturday.

One of the reasons Houston traded point guard Kyle Lowry to Toronto for what essentially is a guaranteed lottery pick was to sweeten the pot in a potential Howard trade, sources said. In discussions with the Knicks, Heat and now Nets about a sign-and-trade for Marcus Camby, the Rockets are hoping to accumulate more picks to make their trade package for Howard more attractive.

If the Magic want a return of youth for Howard, they clearly are going to have a hard time beating the Rockets’ offer and bounty of picks.

However, one has to wonder seriously what exactly the Rockets are thinking.

They are trading players left and right from a team that was two games over .500 last season, but this isn’t the baffling part—it is clear they needed a couple of major shakeups to get this team to a championship level.

What is more curious is that they are doing all this just in the hopes of acquiring one player, Dwight Howard.

Howard has just a year left on his deal, and there is very little reason to think that he would be interested in extending that deal to be a Houston Rocket, especially in light of his recent comments to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports that he’d only re-sign with one team (believed to be the Brooklyn Nets).

Even if Howard did sign an extension with the Rockets, then what? They are going to need a lot more than Superman to contend, and their most valuable pieces would already have been traded in the deal for Howard.

The Rockets get an A for effort. Now, they just need to hope their effort is not rewarded with their desired prize, or that is the only A grade they will be getting.”

The lastest

After a week of unbelievable movement in the NBA, the Dwight Howard saga continues in Orlando, with no real end in sight.

Dwight Howard wants to play for the Brooklyn Nets, but because of all the moves made by the Nets in the last few days, the chances of that happening anytime soon are slim, even if the Orlando Magic wanted to make a deal now.

Enter the Atlanta Hawks and the Danny Ferry rebuilding project.

There has been talk that the Hawks – who haven’t had a true center since the days of Dikembe Mutombo – would be willing to part with a number of players to get Howard to come to Atlanta. Names such as Zaza Pachulia, Jeff Teague and even two-time all-star Al Horford have been mentioned.

The pitfalls for Atlanta:

The Hawks would most likely have to give up a lot for what could end up not only being a one-year rental of Dwight Howard, but with Josh Smith also becoming a free agent in 2013 both players (who are good friends) could potentially walk.
Horford and Teague are now the young centerpieces of this team with the trades of Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams. Handing over two talented young players for one superstar with a lot of question marks surrounding his future is too risky.
Howard didn’t even have Atlanta on his short list of preferred destinations last season, so the chances of him being happy enough to sign a long-term deal even if he did come to Atlanta are not good.

In the end, I think bringing Howard to Atlanta would excite fans for a short time, but with the lack of pieces surrounding him, the Hawks probably wouldn’t find much more success than they’ve had the past few seasons…possibly even less.

There was a time late last year when Howard had a wish-list of four teams, and the Los Angeles Lakers were one of the teams on that list. He could reopen that possibility, and ask the Magic to send him to Los Angeles now that the Lakers have landed Steve Nash.

It’s been rumored for some time that a potential deal sending Howard to the Lakers for Andrew Bynum had been discussed, and that talk will probably start to heat up once again.

The risk for any team interested in Howard is that he will be a free agent in 2013, so if he’s sent to a team that isn’t really his number one choice, it could end up being a one-season rental. Howard is also coming off back surgery and it’s unknown when he’ll be able to return and if it could possibly be an issue for the rest of his career.

The only way Orlando general manager Rob Hennigan will do a deal for Howard is if it’s going to help the Magic. He’s not going to trade him just to be done with it. And although the Hawks have some of the right players to help Orlando in a deal, they aren’t deep enough right now to be able to compensate for those losses even with bringing a talent like Howard to the team. It’s more likely that Howard will be traded to the Lakers or another large market team with more available players to trade without decimating their roster.

Chances are, Howard will be traded before training camp opens in the fall, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see him open the season in an Orlando uniform.

As a result of the recent player personnel changes, (I predict) this Hawks [team] will be lottery bound for the upcoming 2012-2013 season. That’s why I’m not a huge fan of “blowing up” a good (and decent playoff) team. On the contrary, I’m in favor of “tweaking” an already good regular season and (somewhat) decent post season team. You have to wonder how veterans like Al Horford and Josh Smith, in particular, who have become accustomed to winning and making the playoffs, will adjust to and deal with losing (more than winning), “rebuilding,” and missing the playoffs (altogether).

P.S. Jamal Crawford signs with the Clippers and will be playing with (arguably) the best point guard in the NBA. I recall some of you (bloggers) playing the role of cynic(s) writing (in a mocking tone) “watch and see if any good teams will pick up Jamal Crawford in free agency.” I would say the Clippers (team) is a “good team.” The Clippers did make the 2012 playoffs in a deep and highly competitive Western Conference as (I believe) a 5th seed and won a 2012 first round playoff matchup vs. the Memphis Grizzlies. I predict Jamal Crawford and the Clippers will be in the playoffs in the 2013 post season and (that) the Hawks will not be (in the 2013 playoffs). (This is a classic case of “reapin’ and sowin’” and “comeuppance” like a “big dog.”)

i really don’t think the Hawks have to much to worry about in not making the playoffs. unless they go into full rebuild mode and move Horford or Smith in a none Dwight trade. even if the Hawks play this whole season with what they have now (of course they would sign one or two more free agents SG’s and SF’s and maybe Center). I still don’t believe that it is 8 teams in the east better than the Hawks……

lets look at the east in what has happen so far. who has gotten better and who will be less of a threat.
here is the sandings in the east at the end of the regular season.
1. Chicago
2.Miami
3.Indiana
4.Boston
5.Atlanta
6.Orlando
7.New York
8.Philadelphia
9.Milwaukee
10 Detroit
11 Toronto
12. New Jersey (Brooklyn)
13. Cleveland
14. Washington
15. Charlotte

myrak43

Now which teams will move into the playoffs and which teams will move out of the playoffs (this is only my opinion) . Who will drop Orlando if they just keep Howard for this season this changes. Who moves into Brooklyn.

Who I am not sure about Chicago. With Rose missing a much of the season and if they trade Deng or Noah they could fall out of the playoffs. I still believe they take a major fall even if they keep both Deng and Noah between 7th and 9th place. Philadelphia will miss Brand and Lou Williams. But they replaced them with Hawes and Young respectively. So Philly should be ok unless the trade Iguodala. If they do they are out of the playoffs. The other team that may have a shot to make a playoff appearance is Washington (don’t sleep) Okafur and Nene is a nice frontcourt. But can they get Wall some help (Bradley Beal)? How long will it take Beal to play up to his potential or will he ever reach it? I believe Washington climb in the rankings big time but fall short of the playoffs this year. But their future looks bright.

So that leads us to the Hawks. With what we have right now we are better than Orlando minus Dwight, Chicago minus Rose, well maybe not.
But we are better than Milwaukee, Detroit, Toronto, Cleveland, Charlotte, and Washington (I hope). That is a total of 8 teams that we should be better than. We only have to be better than 7 to make the playoffs. But if we make some more moves I believe we could have a shot at ECF this season but we would have to get Dwight or a real center and keep Horford and Josh. P.S Indiana will fall out of the playoffs if Hibbert leaves for Portland.

If we move Teague and Horford for Dwight and signed someone like O.J. Mayo or Raymond Felton, and someone like Pietrus, and a center like Kwame Brown we could still make a push. I know most don’t like Kwame but he is big and would be on the team in a Jason Collins roll. Just for his defense. But he would rebound and score better than Collins as well.

This would be the team I would like to run with.

Devin Harris/ Felton
Mayo/ Morrow
Rashard Lewis or T-Mac/ Pietrus
Smith/ Ivan
Dwight/Zaza/ Kwame

If we don’t get Dwight I would like

Teague/ Devin or Devin/Teague
Eric Gordon/ Morrow
Smith/ T-mac
Horford/ Ivan
Kaman/Zaza

the major reason that Horford has been an All-Star and Josh has not is because of the position that they play. Horford is listed as a center. and over the years he only had Dwight that was really better than him. Josh on the other hand had Lebron, Paul Pierce, Dang, Bosh, Andre Iguodala, Amar’e Stoudemire , Kevin Garnett, Danny Granger, and now Melo.

that is why Horford has been to two and Josh none. not because Horford is a better player than Smith.
