Atlanta Hawks: What about Dwight?

Almost immediately after Hawks GM Danny Ferry took what were most definitely not half measures the speculation turned to whether it’s all just a prelude to a trade for Dwight Howard.

All of the usual dots have been connected: Howard wants out of Orlando, Howard is from Atlanta, and he’s boys with Josh Smith. But the one blank I have yet to see filled in is a desire by Howard to play for his hometown franchise over the long term.

In fact, the only thing I’ve ever heard is the opposite. Howard used to regularly attend Dream games at Phillips Arena during summers. Witnesses tell me that Howard would tell anyone who would listen that Philips is supposed to be his house but “they don’t know how to act.” And by “they” he of course means the team’s owners and management.

And then there were Howard’s comments during the 2011 playoffs, when he said he hates losing, “especially to the Hawks.” Asked to elaborate, Howard, annoyed by the question, snapped: “Come on. You know the answer to that.”

The answer is that Howard, like his pal Smith, doesn’t view the Hawks as a serious franchise. Or at least he didn’t back then. Obviously Danny Ferry is trying to change the perception of the Hawks, so maybe Howard (and/or Smith) changes his mind.

There’s been no word that’s happened so far, though. Howard still wants a trade to the Nets, who now are in no hurry to move him.

The Magic and Hawks had trade discussions over the past week involving Howard and I’m sure they are ongoing. But I don’t think Ferry is willing to trade Al Horford and the four years remaining on his reasonable contract for one year of Howard and all the associated drama.

The Hawks had serious trade discussions with Orlando for Howard back in December, the early days of the Dwightmare. Atlanta apparently was willing to make the deal without an assurance that Howard would even opt-in for next season. Horford was the main piece in that proposed deal.

But I don’t see the Hawks as being willing to trade for Howard without a long-term commitment now. That’s especially true if Orlando, as reported, is looking to unload one of its bad contracts as part of any deal for Howard.

The Hawks clearly would do that if Howard declares he’ll sign an extension here. Until that happens I doubt Howard will have a homecoming.

northcyde, you mentioned in the last blog the Hawks should sign James Harden. No thanks. Harden is a scrub with no game who was exposed in the Finals.

I think at the very least Dwight waits to sign an extension next season. If he does that, then that means he is at least considering the Hawks. But I would assume Brooklyn would only trade for Dwight if he signed an extension there.

If you are Atlanta you can’t risk losing Dwight Howard after only one year. So if he is not willing to sign a long time extension with the Hawks. Absolutely no chance the Hawks do this deal, b/c a trade for Howard would include AL…can you imagine the Hawks losing Smith and Howard next year….

If you trade for Howard this year, without an extension…meaning you probably have traded Horford. I assume they would keep Josh Smith, But then you would have Smith and Howard on the final year of their contracts. If things don’t go well duirng the season, then you could lose Smith and Howard in free agency for nothing next summer and then what?!?!

These moves from Ferry better be about getting Dwight, so if he has to give up Horford and whatever he needs to get it done. If not, then I’m confident that Josh will leave and we will be the next Wizard/Charlotte franchise!

I wouldn’t take the chance on Howard I’d wait till next season instead.

Plus we GOT ANOTHER CHANCE AT CHRIS PAUL The chance to correct a draft mistake. at least according to rumors CP3 likes ATL so who knows next offseason he might want out of ATL and be closer back home to North Carolina.

Anybody can have a bad playoff series. That doesn’t mean that the dude can’t ball. He’s going to be the biggest young free agent out next year. Calling Harden a “scrub” is a typical fan overreaction off of a few games, instead of looking at what he’s done over the course of his career.

I think the Hawks shud just be patient. We have enough pieces to compete this year and we can probably sign a Ray Allen or something to take Joe’s spot. May not win a championship, but fans can stay attentive. Summer of 13′ is our moment. With Horford and Teague still in the fold, the Hawks can probably sign either Paul or Howard or both and Smith would re-up if that happened. 13′ is our year. Be patient!!!!

Great trades by Ferry. This team had maxed out as a second round playoff team as constructed. Trading Johnson frees up a ton of money obviously. But don’t underestimate getting Morrow and that #1 pick. Those are good assets in the deal.

I actually was OK with Marvin, but he was making too much money. The trade for Harris makes sense. Gives us another asset.

Now its time to obtain Howard. So many good combinations we could use among Hortford, Smith, Teague, Harris, expiring contracts, and the extra draft pick.

It was not a good look for LeBron in his first trip, either. OKC doesn’t GO to finals without Harden.

With the amount of cap space the Hawks are looking to clear, they can make the pitch to Smoove, CP3 and Howard to be a big 3 here. I would think that would convince them they’re serious about contending, and that talent should pack Philips with Hawks fans.

I don’t think D12 does us any good …. he is a definite talent, but he must have the right mix of talents. The ORL offense (Dwight + legion of shooters) didn’t work, even though it did get them to the Finals one year.

MC – Rumor before was for D12, D William, Josh be playing in Brooklyn 2013.

Now with Joe being traded to Brooklyn, Josh will not be going there with now having a change of heart to stay in the ATL.

D12, CP3 could be on there way to ATLANTA now make a alot of sense, D12 and Josh who are child hood friend and very close, along with CP3 who love ATL and rumors of him shoping for a house in Atlanta all make sense now for CP3, D12, JOSH could all be playing in Atlanta in 2013.

BIG DOG IN THE HOUSE

It doesn’t make sense to trade away Al and Teague for what may end up being a one-year rental of Howard. If the Hawks did trade away Al and Teague and if Howard and Josh walk next summer, the Hawks will have gone from a perennial play off team to one of the worst teams in the league. There is not enough stars in the FA market to make up for the lost of JJ, Al, Josh, and Teague.

Just say no to a Howard trade. If the Hawks want him, go after him hard next summer. (Though, personally, I would prefer CP3, Horford, and Smith** over Dwight, Horford, and Smith.)

**Or a quality Smith replacement. There will be at least a few FAs next summer that could come close to replacing Smith for the same or less money.

Remember when Dwight Howard had a squeaky clean image?

So many things are coming out about that dude now, that it’s starting to turn off fans. He seems spoiled and coddled, almost like Lebron. Somebody needs to tell him that while he’s a great player, he hasn’t won a championship yet either.

Orlando is deathly afraid to lose him, for fear that they won’t have a superstar player to market their operations around anymore. They’re looking for the perfect deal, and the perfect deal isn’t out there.

As for Howard and ATL, somebody needs to find out the REAL REASON why he doesn’t want to play in his hometown. Is it because more of his personality/secrets will be exposed?

From the team perspective, while the trades have created a buzz now, this is still a team that isn’t going to move the needle at the box office. They need that superstar player to really create the buzz. Dwight would at least serve as that guy for one year.

I do agree with MC though. It is unlikely that Horford would be moved for Dwight, because if both Dwight and Josh left the Hawks, that would leave this team dead in the water ( with a ton of cap space ). Even Teague becomes a restrictive FA at the end of next year. Horford would be the only sure thing that we could have here, so the Hawks may hold onto him.

Despite the close relationship of the two, if Smith can’t get Howard here, should the Hawks trade Smith, Teague + fillers for Howard?

moving jj i dont think was to get in position to get d12 so folks dont get all heart broken if that doesnt come to fruition. it was to give this franchise some wiggle room to get better the right way. go back and read the intro to atlanta from ferry and levinson to see what is the plan. it is more than having a player but players that meet a mold. if d12 comes here it is within those guidelines. payers are going to have to consider that he more they are paid as stars less will be around them in most markets. bottom line matters especially when the full tax kicks in and they rich owners see they are fleshing out the rosters or coffers of their competition. again there are steinbrenners in every sport who dont care but even cuban is uncomfortable with the cba as is aronson who pointed out he is losing money as a winner.

The Magic can’t have it both ways. If we give them Horford and pieces (expiring contracts, young talent, draft picks) for Dwight then they will have to keep their bad contracts. Only way I would take one of their bad contracts is if Dwight signs an extension before the trade and even then I wouldn’t want the extra contracts.
