Atlanta Hawks: Hawks agree to trade Joe Johnson to New Jersey, Marvin Williams to Utah

The Hawks and Nets have agreed to terms on a trade that would send All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn for multiple players with expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.

Update: The Hawks also have agreed to trade forward Marvin Williams to Utah for point guard Devin Harris, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.

Trades can’t be officially consummated until the NBA moratorium ends on July 11 but the person said the Hawks have agreed on the framework of the deals with the Nets and Jazz.

The person said in exchange for Johnson, the Hawks would receive Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson and Jordan Williams from the Nets. Atlanta also would receive the lottery-protected, 2013 first-round draft pick that the Nets acquired in a trade with the Rockets.

Williams is meeting with the Nets and Mavericks today. The Nets plan to pair Johnson with Williams and re-sign free-agent center Brook Lopez to form the core of the team when it plays its first season in Brooklyn in 2012-13.

It was initially believed Atlanta’s deal with the Nets is contingent on Williams agreeing to re-sign with Brooklyn but multiple reports now say the agreement will remain in place even if Williams decides to go elsewhere.

If the deal goes through, the Hawks would be left with less talent but with more ability to make major moves in the future after shedding Johnson’s contract. Such flexibility was the stated goal of Hawks GM Danny Ferry after he was hired last week.

Johnson, 31, is owed nearly $90 million over the final four years of a contract he signed in summer 2010. It was the richest contract in the league at the time, though Derrick Rose now is owed more than Johnson since signing a contract extension.

The Hawks could be in position to clear roughly $30 million in salary-cap space after the 2012-13 season. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard are among the players eligible to become free agents next summer.

I just hope that it is true. Best wishes to Joe and congratulations for getting the contract that he has, but bigger congratulations to the Hawks for getting Joe out of town. And the naysayers said it could not be done. HA. This is refreshing. Now to get a great NBA coach..

To clarify, Nets won’t send their own future 1st to Atlanta, but as @daldridgetnt reports, they’ll ship ‘13 protected pick via Houston.

Frm David Aldridge;

Nets “very close” to acquiring Joe Johnson from Hawks for Farmar, Petro, Morrow, Williams, Stevenson and protected pick .

I’m ok with Farmar, Williams and a first round pick. But Petro, Morrow and Stevenson? I hope we’re getting Brooks too if that is the case.

David Aldridge: Current construction of deal would also keep MarShon Brooks, Gerald Green in Brooklyn. Nets want to keep both.

With no Brooks, and Stevenson instead of Green…I don’t like that deal for the Hawks. However, maybe Ferry has other tricks up his sleeve

My opinion is even if Williams goes to Dallas, Brooklyn (liked typing that) will still want Joe. They are moving into a new building and would possibly need Joe even more if Williams is gone.

I have mixed feelings.

I really liked Joe (probably one of the few on the blog, I am guessing).

He is a legit star. Chances are the Hawks are not going to be able to replace what Joe brings to the court … at least not in a single player.

Well, maybe this will give the Hawks the financial flexibility to build a much deeper, more well-rounded team …

Well Ferry just filled the bench with players that are all on one year contracts, or he now has even more expiring contracts to add to Josh Smith for trade bait…Also, Dwight Howard is a free agent next year; theoretically we could sign him with all the cap space we now have. Howard and Hortford front court would be pretty nice.

Getting rid of Joe Johnson is great no matter who we get back. By accelerating our slide toward a lottery pick, we accelerate possibly becoming a great team in the future. Of course, we will need a GM to actually make decent lottery picks. Without this trade and by keeping Joe Johnson, the team continues in the mediocre zone for several years with no actual hope of winning an NBA championship for many, many years.

Jason S,

There will always be another good player available in the draft, via trade, or via free agency. Don’t shed tears for JJ. The Hawks need another great player. IMO, the Hawks still haven’t found a replacement for the star power that ‘Nique provided. JJ never came close to being the legit scoring threat that Nique was for an entire season much less any single playoff series. When the Hawks went down to Boston in 87-88, no one questioned Nique’s effort or desire to win. He probably out-played Bird for the series. That’s all you can ask out of your superstar.

Great job Danny Ferry. Excellent trade, and the first step to the rebuild this team desperately needs.

I haven’t been here for a couple of days, but I felt all along that the Hawks’ so-called “insistence on Brooks” was just a negotiating tactic. The Hawks didn’t want to take back long term salary, and the Nets didn’t want to give up Brooks. Eventually Ferry would drop the insistence on Brooks in exchange for the Nets dropping their insistence on a long term contract coming to the Hawks. Sure enough, Stevenson’s deal is the only multi-year deal, and it is not guaranteed after the first season.

Best trade this team has made since at least the Jamal Crawford trade.
