Atlanta Hawks: Hawks agree to trade Joe Johnson to New Jersey, Marvin Williams to Utah

The Hawks and Nets have agreed to terms on a trade that would send All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn for multiple players with expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.

Update: The Hawks also have agreed to trade forward Marvin Williams to Utah for point guard Devin Harris, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.

Trades can’t be officially consummated until the NBA moratorium ends on July 11 but the person said the Hawks have agreed on the framework of the deals with the Nets and Jazz.

The person said in exchange for Johnson, the Hawks would receive Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson and Jordan Williams from the Nets. Atlanta also would receive the lottery-protected, 2013 first-round draft pick that the Nets acquired in a trade with the Rockets.

Williams is meeting with the Nets and Mavericks today. The Nets plan to pair Johnson with Williams and re-sign free-agent center Brook Lopez to form the core of the team when it plays its first season in Brooklyn in 2012-13.

It was initially believed Atlanta’s deal with the Nets is contingent on Williams agreeing to re-sign with Brooklyn but multiple reports now say the agreement will remain in place even if Williams decides to go elsewhere.

If the deal goes through, the Hawks would be left with less talent but with more ability to make major moves in the future after shedding Johnson’s contract. Such flexibility was the stated goal of Hawks GM Danny Ferry after he was hired last week.

Johnson, 31, is owed nearly $90 million over the final four years of a contract he signed in summer 2010. It was the richest contract in the league at the time, though Derrick Rose now is owed more than Johnson since signing a contract extension.

The Hawks could be in position to clear roughly $30 million in salary-cap space after the 2012-13 season. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard are among the players eligible to become free agents next summer.

“Ferry still got that amnesty in his back pocket, wow.”

No need for it now, with no guaranteed contracts on the roster. My guess is if it gets used, he uses it on Stevenson, who appears to be totally washed up and unable to contribute anything.

Yeah, Ferry already has layed the groundwork, and its only the second day of Free agency. I wonder if he has any thoughts on contracts? maybe Rasard Lewis at small forward for cheap?

Thank goodness. Joe is a decent player, but has ANY player done more to destroy a franchise than Joe has done since he signed as a FA? Not all his fault, but I cannot wait until the Joe Johnson era is over.

LOL that we might be able to shell out FA millions next year to sign the point guard we could have had in the draft years ago.

Let’s hope Danny Boy brings some b-ball knowledge to this team’s front office.

Remember the days when it took this team two months to figure out whether or not to trade Al Harrington?

The two worst contracts on the team shipped out within a span of one hour. Unbelievable.

It takes a BEAST of a team to win a Championship. How in the HELL do your trade a guy a year after giving him a MAX deal and get nothing I MEAN nothing in return. Hell why not let him walk a year ago BEFORE the deal. Now your stuck with a sorry azz team an undersized center and a Headcase power forward and 10 guys on min contracts. All for the future huh?? We will see the future in about 6 months with people playing Uno in the seats at Phillips. The 3 or 4 thousand that bother to show up to 5 dollar ticket night. ASG thought they were broke before geeeshhh!!! Yeah his contract was bad but there is a way to do everything. Shipping Josh and Marvin out should have been 1st priority. Now all you have is just LUMP of @%#&*%!!@!!!

If Dwight Howard truly wanted out of Orlando, he should have opted out when he had the chance. When you have an opprotunity to control your on movement, you never relinquish it to someone else. He did, and now he wants to be traded to the Nets.

Could be a free agent right now, and decide which team he signs with.

I have never heard or seen such a group of fans so excited when losing a multiple year all star, one of the best three or four at his position, one that has led your team to the playoffs for consecutive years, gotten in no trouble and basically played hard even while being hurt.

Remember just because you lose his contract does not promise you will get the right pieces in return. I t would be different if the Hawks franchise had a history or had won a recent championship and tried to rebuild. Examples include the Bulls, the Lakers, the Celtics and even the Heat to a certain degree. Yet, the Hawks have no history other than what JJ and Nique provided. Now both are gone and you are placing your future in Al Horford. Go figure!!!

i_am_soulstar,

Stevenson will sign 3-year contract worth $6.7M. He will earn $2.3M in Year 1, years 2 and 3 are non-guaranteed.

“Remember just because you lose his contract does not promise you will get the right pieces in return”

Yes, but it gives you the opportunity to get the right pieces in return. With Joe on the roster, that was impossible because of his contract.

This is music to my ears!! I never thought this would ever happen. JJ’s stats are so deceiving. Ive seen games where he only puts up 6 points!! or espn would show a game where put up 22 without noting the truth (14 in the 1st half and 8 in the second). Joe is a good role player, but he is no all-star, especially one that is worth max contract. He does not provide leadership nor does he have the ability to take over a game. Ask any true hawks fan – did you actually feel comfortable giving joe the ball when down by 2 & 2sec left in the 4th quarter?! Ill cut my “losses” and plan for the future. Now the key is “what will we do with the money”. Hopefully they get at teague, horford and josh and let them know they are our foundation.

I love this deal! The Hawks will still get into the playoffs with teague, josh, hortford, jenkins, stevenson or marvin. They can sign some of those bench players like pargo, green and even mcgrady, scott and morrow. I like this team already.
