Atlanta Hawks: Hawks agree to trade Joe Johnson to New Jersey, Marvin Williams to Utah

The Hawks and Nets have agreed to terms on a trade that would send All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn for multiple players with expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.

Update: The Hawks also have agreed to trade forward Marvin Williams to Utah for point guard Devin Harris, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.

Trades can’t be officially consummated until the NBA moratorium ends on July 11 but the person said the Hawks have agreed on the framework of the deals with the Nets and Jazz.

The person said in exchange for Johnson, the Hawks would receive Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson and Jordan Williams from the Nets. Atlanta also would receive the lottery-protected, 2013 first-round draft pick that the Nets acquired in a trade with the Rockets.

Williams is meeting with the Nets and Mavericks today. The Nets plan to pair Johnson with Williams and re-sign free-agent center Brook Lopez to form the core of the team when it plays its first season in Brooklyn in 2012-13.

It was initially believed Atlanta’s deal with the Nets is contingent on Williams agreeing to re-sign with Brooklyn but multiple reports now say the agreement will remain in place even if Williams decides to go elsewhere.

If the deal goes through, the Hawks would be left with less talent but with more ability to make major moves in the future after shedding Johnson’s contract. Such flexibility was the stated goal of Hawks GM Danny Ferry after he was hired last week.

Johnson, 31, is owed nearly $90 million over the final four years of a contract he signed in summer 2010. It was the richest contract in the league at the time, though Derrick Rose now is owed more than Johnson since signing a contract extension.

The Hawks could be in position to clear roughly $30 million in salary-cap space after the 2012-13 season. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard are among the players eligible to become free agents next summer.

If this holds up it might be the greatest first-act-as-GM move in the history of sports. Not in a million years did I believe anyone could have unloaded that contract, not even P.T. Barnum.

“I wish we could blocks some of these idiots that talk on here. Some of you guys need to study the buisness side of the NBA.

I actually think we will still be a playoff team next year. Assuming this Harris trade has legs and gets done:

PG: Teague/Pargo
SG: Harris/JF/JJ
SF: Morrow/Stevenson
PF: Smith/Johnson
C: Horford/ZaZa/Petro”

If you think this team makes the playoffs then you are the idiot.

I think Joe was a really good Hawk. His personality wasn’t to showboat, or be loud. He just came to work and played hard for Atlanta. It’s not his fault the franchise payed him all that money. I would’ve gotten all I could have as well. Stop blaming Joe for that people. Reality is, he is a very good second option on a really good team. He will show that in New York. I am glad that he is able to move on and have a chance to relax and play on a better team (if Williams re-signs). Now what do the Hawks do? We’ve been here before. No stars want to play for the Hawks. Joe leaving doesn’t mean we will get better. Matter of fact, Joe was the only star that ever agreed to stay here to play (albeit for the money). So, before we start applauding this move, we better make sure we can attract other great players to come here to play. Josh is not a star. He is a hustle player, who does Dennis Rodman like work, but not a 1st or 2nd option. We have work to do. I wish you well, Joe. Thanks for your time in the ATL. Now let’s see Danny Ferry earn that check.

It’s not that Joe Johnson was THAT bad; however-I do think he will thrive under Avery Johnson, a REAL coach. Joe won’t be put in Iso situations like the bubbleheaded that couldn’t coach his way out of a bag of ice.

Due respect to JJ. He was great for a couple years. But that contract was a total albatross and now it’s gone. Danny Ferry for president is all I can say. I thought it was going to be impossible to actually move the contract and he did. If he can do that for the Hawks, that’s the man I want in Washington fixing stuff that really matters.

Okay, posting one more time to show the value of Houston’s #1 pick:

“@ajchawks: RT @KBergCBS: 1st-round pick going to ATL via HOU is top-14 protected through 2016. Becomes 2nd-round pick and cash in 2017.”

Let’s just consider using it and trying to get a 15th pick….not a bad deal for a need. Kawhi Leonard was drafted in 2011, Terrance Jones was #15 this past year.

It just won’t be a lottery pick, so hope for Houston to remain mediocre for the next couple of years.

“larry drew is a bigger problem. guy cant coach”

absolutely agree

Hawks going nowhere with him at the helm.

Was clamoring for Rick Adelman when he was available. Hawks not making a move for him proves that this franchise is not truly committed to winning.

Still losing that Joe Johnson contract was a GREAT move.

Easy to find similar stats from available crop of FA’s and rookies (current Hawk rookie is a good candidate for minutes)

Hawks can fill the spot with a contingent of SG’s

Leadership now falls on Hoffa’s and JT’s shoulders, even Smoove’s if he decides to stick around.

Losing JJ ball hogging might even turn things around for Marvin.
