Atlanta Hawks: Hawks agree to trade Joe Johnson to New Jersey, Marvin Williams to Utah

The Hawks and Nets have agreed to terms on a trade that would send All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn for multiple players with expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.

Update: The Hawks also have agreed to trade forward Marvin Williams to Utah for point guard Devin Harris, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.

Trades can’t be officially consummated until the NBA moratorium ends on July 11 but the person said the Hawks have agreed on the framework of the deals with the Nets and Jazz.

The person said in exchange for Johnson, the Hawks would receive Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson and Jordan Williams from the Nets. Atlanta also would receive the lottery-protected, 2013 first-round draft pick that the Nets acquired in a trade with the Rockets.

Williams is meeting with the Nets and Mavericks today. The Nets plan to pair Johnson with Williams and re-sign free-agent center Brook Lopez to form the core of the team when it plays its first season in Brooklyn in 2012-13.

It was initially believed Atlanta’s deal with the Nets is contingent on Williams agreeing to re-sign with Brooklyn but multiple reports now say the agreement will remain in place even if Williams decides to go elsewhere.

If the deal goes through, the Hawks would be left with less talent but with more ability to make major moves in the future after shedding Johnson’s contract. Such flexibility was the stated goal of Hawks GM Danny Ferry after he was hired last week.

Johnson, 31, is owed nearly $90 million over the final four years of a contract he signed in summer 2010. It was the richest contract in the league at the time, though Derrick Rose now is owed more than Johnson since signing a contract extension.

The Hawks could be in position to clear roughly $30 million in salary-cap space after the 2012-13 season. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard are among the players eligible to become free agents next summer.

I don’t see why Brooklyn made this Deal.
Joe is not gonna lead this Team to a Title.
D-Will, Joe, Lopez & Brooks……good, but nothing special — even in the East.
They just priced themselves out of getting Dwight.
This is an unbelievable deal for Atl — for so many reasons!!

So in other words, if Ferry does nothing else this summer other than amnesty Marvin or trade him for an expiring, the Hawks still have a pretty decent chance at a playoff spot and will have enough cap space a year from now to sign CP3, Josh, and Dwight at the same damn time.

Sounds good to me.

@shake&break

We grew tired of Hoe Johnson disappearing in the playoffs year after year, this team as constructed last season has maxed and peaked out, we are starving for a championship, tired of never making the ECF, yeah things didn’t work out for Ferry in clev, but I do recall they did make it to the finals.

hahah that is great.

does anyone know if the nets make a offer to Brook Lopez how much Brooks salary for 2012-2013 season will be? Gerald Wallace was just signed 4-40 mill and they could trade gerald and brook to ORL for dwight, maybe another guy to even the salaries out. could this trade happen or is it not close enough in salary, someone help.

“I don’t see why Brooklyn made this Deal.

It’s because they are moving into a new arena and want to assure themselves of a playoff spot so that they can sell jerseys. They are thinking short term over long term; the Hawks are thinking long term over short term.

This trade needs to go thru. We get a lil size coming off the bench, Morrow is not a bad player, Farmer is not going to hurt the team, Pargo may still be signed, I think IVAN is in the HOUSEEEEEEEEE. The draft choices may be better then any of us think, J Smoove or who ever he is may bring a quality player and draft pick and the hawks will have money to spend after this season. DANNY FERRY is the MAN!

I’m just watching all of this from work. People are glad that the Hawks are about to be dismantled, like they’re watching the Berlin Wall fall down or something.

Props to JJ, for providing some of the best 5 years in ATL basketball history. Arguably the 2nd best 5 year stretch of the franchise.

If the Nets re-sign Deron, that team looks very good on paper, and instantly becomes a borderline playoff team.

The Hawks are a different story, unless both Josh and Al can play way above their heads and more efficiently ( especially in the case of Josh ).

Make no mistake people . . I am an ATLANTA HAWK fan first and foremost. I could care if we acquired Angel for JJ, and played her at the 2. I’m still rolling with this team regardless.

Remember that, if Ferry decides to trade off Josh Smith. Don’t go whining and crying and saying that you’ll never watch the Hawks again, if they trade Smith.

I’m here regardless of who is on the team.

Can’t the rest of you say the same?

Thank you Danny Ferry!!!!! The respect that your name brings to this Hawks organization is being witnessed by Hawks fans and let’s hope and pray that this deal goes through and not fall through. This is the best news I’ve heard in years. No more Iso-Joes. Next up? Get rid of the Hawks coach. Can you please do that? Buy him out-whatever it takes. Then trade Mr. Crybaby and then I think we got a chance to bring in younger players. Everyone now knows that the Hawks are the oldest team in the league. Had the Hawks won a championship-that moniker wouldn’t seem so negative, but because of the Hawks inept management and lack of basketball IQ, the fans (this blog included) and other AJC blogs-were being portrayed by the local sports media as the scapegoat for the Hawks not making it to the next level and every other malady they’ve had-since the infamous Joe Johnson reaquisition which cost the Hawks financial distress.

The good thing is Jordan Farmar has a player option so he may opt out of his contract saving another 4mill. JaVale McGee and Omer Asik are two possible centers to sign. signing both would be great if we can get Dwight here.

Good grief, the Nets are almost as stupid as our owners were (they seem to be wising up). Why they would want to take on this horrible contract is beyond me. Oh well, good for us. Now if we could just con someone else into taking Marvin and his bad contract. If not, at least there’s only 2 years left on it (unlike the 4 left on Joe’s deal).

well this is about as close to saying the summer of sameness is officially over. only needs the approval of d will with his signature and we are free of a future albatross because he wasnt in present form even at 17 mil. but 24 mil at the ripe age of 34 would have been tough to watch.

really?

the left hand didnt know what the right was doing. wasnt it only a few weeks ago that sund was saying that all the guys thought they could do it and everyone wanted to come back after the exit interviews. talk about a 180? only in the atl bros.

You just saw the new bench being formulated + the return of one Ivan Johnson.

Teague/Stevenson/Josh/Al/Zaza – we still need improvements.

Projected Eastern Conference playoff seedings

1) Miami
2) Chicago
3) New York
4) Boston

5) Indiana
6) Philly
7) New Jersey
8] Atlanta/Milwaukee

Jenkins has to be much better than advertised for this team to be a playoff level squad. Either that, or Teague has to become a top 10 PG and possibly a much higher scoring one.

We’ll see how the season plays out.

If the Hawks get Dwight-then Josh Smith will stay. We definitely need to have an experienced winning nba coach. Phil Jackson would be a great one! Phil’s comments about coaching the current Knicks were genuis. Phil looked at their roster and knew what they needed and did not need. Phil said Amarie doesn’t fit in with the Knicks roster.

I just want to say, we are basically in rebuilding mode for no reason. We are getting nothing back in return for Joe. Joe did not under-perform, he was just overpaid because Sund was an idiot to give all that money to Joe. Now we have to watch Deron and Joe in Brooklyn, which is what we should have seen years ago if Knight would have drafted Deron instead of Marvin.

A sad day, but we got rid of Joe’s contract, so hooray!
