Atlanta Hawks: Hawks agree to trade Joe Johnson to New Jersey, Marvin Williams to Utah

The Hawks and Nets have agreed to terms on a trade that would send All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn for multiple players with expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.

Update: The Hawks also have agreed to trade forward Marvin Williams to Utah for point guard Devin Harris, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.

Trades can’t be officially consummated until the NBA moratorium ends on July 11 but the person said the Hawks have agreed on the framework of the deals with the Nets and Jazz.

The person said in exchange for Johnson, the Hawks would receive Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson and Jordan Williams from the Nets. Atlanta also would receive the lottery-protected, 2013 first-round draft pick that the Nets acquired in a trade with the Rockets.

Williams is meeting with the Nets and Mavericks today. The Nets plan to pair Johnson with Williams and re-sign free-agent center Brook Lopez to form the core of the team when it plays its first season in Brooklyn in 2012-13.

It was initially believed Atlanta’s deal with the Nets is contingent on Williams agreeing to re-sign with Brooklyn but multiple reports now say the agreement will remain in place even if Williams decides to go elsewhere.

If the deal goes through, the Hawks would be left with less talent but with more ability to make major moves in the future after shedding Johnson’s contract. Such flexibility was the stated goal of Hawks GM Danny Ferry after he was hired last week.

Johnson, 31, is owed nearly $90 million over the final four years of a contract he signed in summer 2010. It was the richest contract in the league at the time, though Derrick Rose now is owed more than Johnson since signing a contract extension.

The Hawks could be in position to clear roughly $30 million in salary-cap space after the 2012-13 season. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard are among the players eligible to become free agents next summer.

Devin Harris for Marvin, huh? Another expiring contract, and if Harris can regain his form from a couple of years ago he may actually be good enough to move at the deadline for another first-rounder. Make it happen.

“we gotta have some of the DUMBEST bloggers in the nation…D12 has emphatically stated that the nets is where he wants to be and he will not resign with any organization, but the nets…

WHY ARE Y’ALL STILL TALKIN’ ABOUT PACKING A DEAL TO GET D12 IN ATLANTA? smf”

D12 can say whatever he wants, but the Nets just assured themselves of not having enough cap space for him. They can’t afford him while they have Deron, Joe, and Wallace on the roster.

Well it doesn’t really matter if Joe’s traded now or not. Atlanta will never be a contender and most of you will still find something to complain about after the deal is done. Whatever!

Rumor Marvin Williams to the Utah Jazz for Devin Harris

Why is everyone saying we will be a lottery team now??? We still have 2 top 20 players (Al and Josh), Teague is an above average point guard, and we have some top notch outside shooters (Jenkins, Morrow, and Marvin). Plus Stevenson is a terrific perimeter defender! We will make the playoffs no doubt!

This trade frees cap space to sign FAs this yr, and additional cap space next yr to do the same. We aren’t going to fall apart and tank this season to get into the lottery. That can only happen if we decide to trade Josh for draft picks before the season.

This team won’t fall apart without JJ just like if didn’t fall apart with the sudden and unexpected loss of Horford last yr. Don’t forget, there were many doubters and negative minded fans who predicted the team would collapse after Horford’s injury, and look at how that turned out.

NICE. Hopefully Rockets have a bust of a season and give us a good pick. Time to sign a big man and let Al do his thing as a power forward.

+++++++++++

The Rockets pick is top-14 protected, so if you want the Hawks to actually be able to use the pick, you better hope the Rockets make it to the playoffs (preferably as the 8th seed).

This is a different NBA than the one in 2005, thanks to LeBron setting the blueprint to team up with other superstars. CP3 and Dwight are free agents in the summer of 2013. Getting players like that to team up with a third upper echelon player (Josh? Al?) is a lot more realistic now than it was in 2005.

My gooddawdamighty, give Ferry a ten year extension, QUICK!
Joe is not a bad guy, not a bad player and in fact he was at the worst, the second best player on the team. BUT, he was paid like the best player in the NBA. For that kind of money, you can replace
18/4/4 and have boatloads of cash left over for other spots.
As M Bradley might write: don’t look now, but the Hawks might have just turned the corner.

I repost my question about Marvin….can he be bought out for one year at 7.5M because next year is a PO? If that is the case, amnesty this guy. It won’t bite the salary cap much, and if he gets picked up, deduct that amount. And I don’t care if he starts for Miami. I have seen all I want to see from Marvin. I’m not a Devin Harris fan at all.
I would rather have the free cap space.

real cp, we see things alike at times, and I wanted to post this for your behalf:

On the championship run for the Mavericks:
“The Mavs’ veteran leadership trio of Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd and Jason Terry twice lobbied Carlisle to insert Stevenson into the starting lineup. Carlisle listened on both occasions, once near the beginning of the season and the second time just before the playoffs began.
The Dallas vets embraced the nasty tone that Stevenson, who usually got the most difficult defensive assignment among the opposing guards and small forwards, set along with big man Tyson Chandler.

“Just a tough, tough guy that we miss,” Nowitzki said. “I’m happy for him that he gets his ring and he’s going to get a standing ovation. He brought a toughness and grittiness to our club last year that we needed.”

They used Stevenson on LeBron along with Marion, and IMO, Dallas lost a lot of its defensive presence this past year. You have to give Stevenson a chance. He has an opportunity to try and prove he’s worth that 3 year deal. I like this piece of the deal and now we follow it up with a shooter to get us buckets.
Someone has to defend Wade and LeBron; Stevenson will help us in that area more than Brooks or Green.

And what’s wrong with a future #1 pick of Houston’s? What superstar is going to sign with them? They are in IMO worse shape than us. There’s nothing wrong with an extra pick for the future.

So for now, we have a roster of 13. We have Josh and Marvin rumors going on. I say Josh needs to go for what you can get for him. I don’t expect much from moving Josh even though he is very comparable to Joe in talent. You think Danny is looking for a short term return on moving Josh so he doesn’t end up with a long term mistake?

Congrats to Danny on a huge move for the future of this franchise.

if they trade goes through our lineup(as of now)
PG-Teague SG-Stevenson SF-Williams PF-J.Smith C-Horford
that lineup does not excite me and the fact that Houstons 1st rd pick via Brooklyn is lottery protected so that is maybe a 14-22 pick for next year isnt too tantalizing.
This is the second great day this off-season so far and that is much improved from last years great day count at uhh 0.(same owners, same GM,same coach, only additions were veterans,TMAC signing counts as a 1/2 great day)

We got 22 million off the books for each of the next 4 years, and when we lose the 3 “one and dones” it’ll be 32. Think we could build around a Teague and J Jenkins backcourt with big AL at PF with 30+ million in 2013-14 for a couple of stars at Center and SF plus an additional 1st rounder to leverage? Business wise – this was an A+ move. 12-13 season wise – we have conceded. But if we tank and go lottery pick + another 1st rounder next year – all the pieces are in place! J smoove can fetch us 2 great bench players and a draft pick for ‘14 – and in 3 years – Hawks can be back in the top 3 of the East

The problem with Atlanta Hawks fans is three fold.

First, go find two good players who want to come to Atlanta that will replace Joe Johnson. You will still have to pay the same amount for them and you may find a average center (Asik) and a average guard (Mayo or Crawford). They will cost you the same combined salary as Joe and put you no closer to a championship. Good luck finding those players.

Second, just because someone is the highest paid player makes them no leader (vocal or otherwise). If leadership is the problem, I guess now the Hawks will look to find their leader in one of the free agents they can find to replace Joe. Good luck with that.

Third, good luck on rebuilding through the draft. That takes more than one or two years. Plus, the Hawks have had so much luck with the draft in recent years. Oh, now you have Danny Ferry who did a great job putting so much talent around LeBron that LBJ left. I hate to say this, but I think Hawks fans will be remembering the phrase “you never miss a good thing until it is gone”. JJ was not a vocal all-star or leader, but he was a very good all-star caliber player. For some reason, you Hawks fan could never get over that contract. Good Luck Hawks!!

PF – Horford, Williams, Johnson, Scott
SF – Smith, Williams
SG – Stevenson, Morrow, Jenkins
PG – Teague, Farmer

That is a playoff team even if Ferry doesn’t make another move. And we all know he did this just to do something else. We aren’t going to win the championship next year, but we are far from a lottery team. Let’s just hope is Houston is not a lottery team either.

I actually think we will still be a playoff team next year. Assuming this Harris trade has legs and gets done:

PG: Teague/Pargo
SG: Harris/JF/JJ
SF: Morrow/Stevenson
PF: Smith/Johnson
C: Horford/ZaZa/Petro
