Atlanta Hawks: Hawks agree to trade Joe Johnson to New Jersey, Marvin Williams to Utah

The Hawks and Nets have agreed to terms on a trade that would send All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn for multiple players with expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.

Update: The Hawks also have agreed to trade forward Marvin Williams to Utah for point guard Devin Harris, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.

Trades can’t be officially consummated until the NBA moratorium ends on July 11 but the person said the Hawks have agreed on the framework of the deals with the Nets and Jazz.

The person said in exchange for Johnson, the Hawks would receive Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson and Jordan Williams from the Nets. Atlanta also would receive the lottery-protected, 2013 first-round draft pick that the Nets acquired in a trade with the Rockets.

Williams is meeting with the Nets and Mavericks today. The Nets plan to pair Johnson with Williams and re-sign free-agent center Brook Lopez to form the core of the team when it plays its first season in Brooklyn in 2012-13.

It was initially believed Atlanta’s deal with the Nets is contingent on Williams agreeing to re-sign with Brooklyn but multiple reports now say the agreement will remain in place even if Williams decides to go elsewhere.

If the deal goes through, the Hawks would be left with less talent but with more ability to make major moves in the future after shedding Johnson’s contract. Such flexibility was the stated goal of Hawks GM Danny Ferry after he was hired last week.

Johnson, 31, is owed nearly $90 million over the final four years of a contract he signed in summer 2010. It was the richest contract in the league at the time, though Derrick Rose now is owed more than Johnson since signing a contract extension.

The Hawks could be in position to clear roughly $30 million in salary-cap space after the 2012-13 season. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard are among the players eligible to become free agents next summer.

Radmonovic can get his shot off against a smaller opponent- and he can put the ball on the floor. He can at least be the replacement for Marvin Williams off the bench.

I hate to see JJ go.. but we can’t afford that contract anymore– and it wasn’t his fault that they gave it to him. They needed more players to go with him. But we won’t be better without him this year… unless we’re going to pick up some real scorers..

It will be interesting to see who steps up with Joe gone.

As for Joe he didn’t want to be here anyway. They threw a bunch of money at him and he took it. Wish him all the luck in the world.

“I wanted to get rid of that contract too but Stevenson is pure doo doo. I at least wanted Green. Im glad we got rid of that terrible contract but come on man.”

This trade isn’t about the players the Hawks received in return. Stevenson won’t be a Hawk a year from now, and neither will any of those other players. This is about the pick and cap space.

Ferry is giving the Hawks a chance to win an NBA championship at some point in the not so distant future. It may not ever happen, but at least there is a chance. Please remember that with Joe Johnson and his contract, there was ZERO chance for the Hawks to win a championship in the next four years. Plus, the Hawks would have been just mediocre enough with no flexibility to have little chance of improving for years and years. Now, we have flexibility. If we become really bad, we have a chance to draft a truly impact player. If we stay average, we at least have flexibility to make moves. This is a time to rejoice, but we will probably slide down next year. That is ok as the future is so much brighter.

This is an excellent move.
I wouldn’t throw in the towel for next season just yet.
Joe sucks. His 18/4/4 can be replaced.
Horford is the corner-stone of this Franchise.
Bye Joe — go dribble dribble dribble out the shot-clock in Brooklyn.

hahaha the Atlanta Hawks fans Finally get a win! i liked Joe and didnt want to see him go unless the proper deal came up and mostly so it did, however we need marshon brooks to fill that SG spot and Brooklyn wouldnt need Marshon now that Joe is there.
Danny Ferry you are a stud! no one on this blog thought Joe was tradeable including me but wow you did it. i cant wait to see this trade finalized and i hope the finalized copy has Marshon Brooks in that deal.

One thing I will say — when the Nets come here in December (they usually play a game in ATL early in the season) I hope Joe gets the standing O he deserves. It wasn’t his fault the DASG gave him a cap-crippling contract, and it’s not because of his performance that trading him became necessary. He did everything this franchise could reasonably ask him to do. Hopefully the fans won’t hold it against him for not being the player his contract dictated he should be.

Hawks would never win a championship with Joe leading the way. Wasted several years trying to figure that out but at least saved some years and now we can try something new. Might actually start watching the Hawks now.

This deal is far from over if Hawks are depending Deron Williams to stay put.

However, John Kincaid is a total loser (for many reasons but the latest one) for refusing to entertain talk show discussions about trading Joe. Trading Joe is the ONLY way the Hawks position themselves to win a championship.

This would be a great deal for the Hawks. Allows them to get a world class PG and Dwight Howard when the Magic are ready to deal him.

Horford, J-Smoove, DHoward + a PG and 2 guard.

Not so fast, this is based on the Nets retaining D. Williams however I hope the trade goes through. Joe Johnson is s real good player, But unfortunately he’s a pure jump shooter and not a good rebounder or a post- up guy. We all know when he plays against tough competition his game usually goes down hill from there. Plain and simply put he wasn’t worth that big contract. So big ups to Danny Ferry if he can pull that off…….

The Spurs machine strikes again! After Sam Presti just impressing everybody with OKC now Ferry strikes within a few weeks, unbelievable. Next task will be to absolutely convince Josh to stay here, which is not such a big deal with all the rumors spreading.
I do know Josh wants to retire as a Hawk, he’s so important to the community and he loves playing for his home team, I just think it was a real good punch to the table to see whether or not this organisation was willing to play for something big.
I don’t know if we’ll do anything special until training camp, but I DO know that we’ll not be a 8th seed, and for one and only reason : Iso-Joe has stopped, this will be an inside-oriented team with Josh and Al who were picking up garbages for the past few years. And a duo of All Stars inside doesn’t mean lottery folks…

“Guess we will be a lottery team this season.”

I am extremely confident that Teague-Josh-Al with a few good role players around them can do exactly what the Hawks did this year. Northcyde will disagree but I don’t think this is a lottery team without Joe.

However, I don’t think it’s good for this team in the long term to stop here with the revamping of this team. Being a middle-seeded playoff team with no shot at a title with Teague-Josh-Al is no better than being a middle-seeded playoff team with no shot at a title with Teague-Joe-Josh-Al. They need to make a strong move for Dwight or put themselves in position to acquire another player of that caliber, either via trade or by blowing up the roster and tanking for a lottery pick.

I don’t understand why people keep saying the Hawks should have got more. Don’t you realize the Hawks would have about 10 million dollars to sign SIX players before going in the luxary cap.

The Hawks essentially traded 1 player for an entire bench. NOW the Hawks can try to get Ivan Johnson resigned and have ultimate leverage on what to do with Josh Smith.

“so lets see….

teague,jenkins,marvin,josh, and al

Yeah, and the lineup this year that had Marvin, Joe, Josh, Zaza, Collins, Teague, Green, Stackhouse and T-mac REALLY had teams shuddering out of fear of facing the Hawks. COME ON MAN! This team was going NOWHERE with Joe hogging all the time, money, and shots from the rest of the team. The Hawks were doomed to perennially be a 40-45 win team, get a top-4 seed in the Eastern Conference, maybe tough out a Round 1 win, and then get hammered in Round 2 by either Miami or Chicago or Boston. This team was NOT progressing, not improving, and the team had zero flexibility with its salary cap. The roster you saw in 2010, 2011, 2012 was the SAME roster you were getting in 2013, 2014, 2015. So how are we that much worse off without Johnson? Seems to me without the albatross of that awful contract hanging on the team’s neck, perhaps Ferry and his staff can move some other pieces around, sign a few key players that really fit their roles (think San Antonio Spurs) and have some flexibility to make some moves. As long as Joe was on the team, the only pieces moving around were chaning out the 11th, 12th, and 13th men on the bench — your top 8 or 10 guys were locked in.

Let’s see where this takes us. I have a feeling the Hawks will be better off in 3 to 5 years with this move than if we’d kept Joe and maintained the same, stale, inflexible roster, where Joe got paid like a king and had to have his required 15-18 shots to get his 20 points a game. Great move, Hawks… now let’s continue to build and look to bigger and better things.

The Nets have just taken the hawks playoff spot, lol. I am no longer a hawks fan, D-Will will resign, Jason Kidd will be the backup in Brooklyn, Lopez stays, they still have Brooks and Green. Thats not the best part, Dwight Howard is unrestricted next year, he’s not coming to ATL, i’m estactic, the billionaire will resign him in Brooklyn.
Now you miss JJ, who will draw the double team to help AL and Josh work, JJ just needed a good point guard, and a center, love it.
They had cap space when they signed Joe, no one came. I know people dont remember, but Danny Ferry gave Larry Hughes $70 million in Cleveland, he’s no genius, lol.
