The Hawks and Nets have agreed to terms on a trade that would send All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn for multiple players with expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.
Update: The Hawks also have agreed to trade forward Marvin Williams to Utah for point guard Devin Harris, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.
Trades can’t be officially consummated until the NBA moratorium ends on July 11 but the person said the Hawks have agreed on the framework of the deals with the Nets and Jazz.
The person said in exchange for Johnson, the Hawks would receive Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson and Jordan Williams from the Nets. Atlanta also would receive the lottery-protected, 2013 first-round draft pick that the Nets acquired in a trade with the Rockets.
Williams is meeting with the Nets and Mavericks today. The Nets plan to pair Johnson with Williams and re-sign free-agent center Brook Lopez to form the core of the team when it plays its first season in Brooklyn in 2012-13.
It was initially believed Atlanta’s deal with the Nets is contingent on Williams agreeing to re-sign with Brooklyn but multiple reports now say the agreement will remain in place even if Williams decides to go elsewhere.
If the deal goes through, the Hawks would be left with less talent but with more ability to make major moves in the future after shedding Johnson’s contract. Such flexibility was the stated goal of Hawks GM Danny Ferry after he was hired last week.
Johnson, 31, is owed nearly $90 million over the final four years of a contract he signed in summer 2010. It was the richest contract in the league at the time, though Derrick Rose now is owed more than Johnson since signing a contract extension.
The Hawks could be in position to clear roughly $30 million in salary-cap space after the 2012-13 season. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard are among the players eligible to become free agents next summer.

This update was really pieced together. We are talking about Marvin being traded to Utah, then it starts talking about Deron Williams, but doesn’t mention him so it sounds like it is talking about Marvin signing with Brooklyn.
Very confusing and poor blog. I am perfect and never make mistakes, so I am able to point these things out.

Thx, OB, JustJoe, that doesn’t give us much wiggle room for Nash, who I would be just as happy with as CP3.
And us getting D12? I don’t see it happening as it doesn’t seem like we have enough assets to do that. Al, Jeff and a couple of 1s are going to turn any heads. We have to take Turk on, we have to give up Zaza also. We will have to be very creative to see him coming here.

Even if we do nothing this year but fill out the roster with exceptions and minimum contract, we are positioned great for the future.

Howard is basically making a fool of himself lately that Im not sure if we need such a player on our team.
Never understood why people cared so much about the off the(”field” “court”) stuff… I go to games to pull for my team and the players on it… I don’t care how the act off the court!! As long as it doesn’t involve breaking the Law.. I don’t dive a Damn!!

I think Mr. Ferry is just getting started. This team is not a gutted fish, just yet. We still got pieces to land D12 and CP3 next year. I think D12 will be moved before this season starts and, The Hawks are positioning themselves so nicely – to bring this kid home.

There is absolutley no reason the national media should have the lead on these stories. Come on Cunningham, get engaged with the Hawks or let’s get Sekou back. The AJC’s lack of coverage of the Hawks is one of the main reasons the team lacks the city’s support.

Obrien- Either guy works for me Bynum or Howard. If I had to choose tho I would take Bynum for less money. He is bigger/longer and is alot better scoring in the paint. Dwight is a beast but I think Bynum would fit better with Horford/Smoove/Ivan.
DH12 isnt coming here-I just feel it in my gut, dude wants the bright lights and media market of the big apple, he’s a gonner. Also the Nets have a better offer on the table for him-Lopez,Humphries,Brooks and multiple 1st is better than what most teams could offer.

@Tau,
The reason it doesn’t point out the differentiation, is because Marvin Williams is not even valid enough to be mentioned multiple times. Also, Williams as in Deron is the only valid Williams in that statement.

Guys, if the Hawks trade for D12, it will be nearly impossible for Brooklyn to give Howard a max deal. With $50 mil committed next season to Joe, Williams, and Wallace (not to mention they traded this year’s pick, so they have to draft in first round next season = more salary). So the only way the Nets can get D12 is through trade.

KevinM, the moves in the past few days will allow the Hawks to do GREAT things next summer and likely very little this summer. That’s not a complaint… it is the way rebuilding generally works. It usually takes a big step backwards for at least a single season.

No one player is going to replace what JJ brought to the table, especially his clutch shooting and versatility. However, players like JTeague, AHorford, Morrow and Harris collectively can fill in most of the gap. The same goes for Marvin. The Hawks can still compete for a playoff berth, but can’t afford to get off to a slow start this season.
We have 2 starting positions to fill, SF & SG. Who we use to fill those positions, as well as fill out our bench, will determine how well we do this yr. It’s foolish for anyone to believe or predict that we’ll automatically become a lottery team before those decisions are made. As it stands right now, we have only one OFF ball stopper on the team, and that’s JSmith.
With JJ gone, hopefully we can consistently play up to PG JTeague’s speed and score more transition baskets. There will definitely be fewer ball stopping ISOs. The biggest loss that we’ll suffer with JJ and Marvin gone will be their versatility, size, and DEF. It’s pretty certain that expectations won’t be as high as they were before the trades.
So we might as well roll the dice and start a frontline of SF-Josh, C-Zaza, and PF-Horford, unless we sign a starting caliber SF. If Zaza has to be replaced for any reason, we bring in Ivan and slide Horford over to OC. Or, we can bring Ivan in at OC in certain situations, or Petro. At any rate, it looks like SF could end up being our achilles heel.

OB, if I were Ferry, I would focus on CP3 and Bynum. Howard can’t hit a game winning shot. The opposing team will play hack-a-Howard and watch him brick 2 free throws. If we’re building from the ground up, I prefer a superstar who could deliver from start to finish as opposed to someone who can’t touch the ball at a crucial moment of the game.

@Astro Joe,
I don’t necessarily think the Hawks will take a huge step back. Remember, the East is still top heavy with Miami, Boston, and Chicago, however Chicago may step back because of D Rose being out. Philly and Indiana are good, but i think the Nets if D12 is acquired will take the place of Chicago. Orlando will not be good. The Knicks should be ok. If another move is made to add a 3 and we keep the rest of the core, I think the Hawks will still have a pretty good team.

The stories this year are:
Is Josh a viable #1 for at least this season?
How will Josh’s intentions to be #1 work out with Al, will they work together and be Humpty-Dumpty?
Will Josh’s apparent courting of Howard create a bad vibe with Horford? Or are they together in thinking that, next year, we could go heavy duty with Josh, Al and Dwight?
On offense, Al plays more outside and would be a consistent threat on pick n roll, pick n pop and spot ups from the elbow, so Howard and Josh could work inside.
Are we even interested in doing well this year? Taking in consideration next year’s draft?
Will Teague flourish or perish without JJ next to him? In particular since he will need to hold the rock longer on offense and on D will be paired with salt statues…

Thank God. Please trade away Joe Johnson. Joe was good for us in the beginning–but he changed to be a selfish, prima dona who ultimately was only interested in the almighty dollar and how much money he could rake up for himself. He ultimately became the HIGHEST PAID PLAYER IN THE HISTORY OF THE NBA. Good for him and good riddens–i cant wait till he is wearing a different uniform because I cant stand to see him in a hawks uniform represnting the hawks. Thank the almighty god for getting rid of a selfish, malcontent who is only interest in one name alone–joe johnson.

Then, you need to ship Josh to LAL because Josh would be pissed with that option (Bynum instead of Dwight).
From a strictly on court bball point of view, I prefer Bynum, but his injury history is frightening (albeit D12’s is recovering from back injury which is a bad omen for the future, IMO).

Vava said just that a couple of times regarding his true worth to the asg.
Ok OB and AJ for nit picking, instead of falls in their lap maybe i should have said fell their way. Remember philly was in the hunt. Also you guys both know my reaction was to give the basg enough cred to call them the asg going forward.
I also alluded to the length of the contract as a positive and laughed at the notion that some thought it gave Danny wiggle room to do nothing and watch for a year. The best thing about Danny is he was the mirror that forced them to look into it to reveal more than what until now had held themselves accountable for.
Now it is time to wonder how he will flesh out the rest of the roster. We did this in the Mookie era and had a plan with ryder that did not go too far for a rental truck. I believe Danny will do better.

As presently constructed I see the Hawks taking a step backwards. I think we are still potentially a playoff team, not a lottery team, although injuries and coaching will determine the results. However the hiring of Danny Ferry and the trades of Joe and Marvin have given us one thing we did not have before. That is hope for a brighter future.
Well done, ASG.

Josh and D12 are tight. Morrow is in the mix also and is tight with Dwight. We gotta ship Al, Jeff, ZaZa, both 1st picks next season, both 2nd’s, and our 1st’s in 2015 and 17 for Dwight.
The Nets cannot match that offer. Lopez, Humphries, Brooks, Green and 3 first picks isn’t quite as good as All Star, All NBA Al, up and coming Teague (with more upside than Marshon), and tough guy ZaZa, along with 4, not 3 first round picks.

vava, I need Danny Ferry driving what happens over the next 3-5 years, not a player. Could you imagine a player with another fracnhise trying to run things who had never been to the conference finals nor to an All-Star game? I can’t. If Ferry’s plan happens to include Josh (and Dwight), then fine. I want the basketball exec to make the decisions (not owners nor players).
I also really like Rudy Gay as a trade target if things don’t quickly improve in Memphis. I would probably target one max player and try to surround him with a few $10M+ players to build an up and coming team. Said differently, I’d rather spend $50M on 4 players than 3 players.

Hawks: Joe were going to pay you 20+ million per year

The Nets and the Magic are discussing a trade that would send Howard to the Nets for Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks and the Nets’ first-round picks in 2013, 2015 and 2017, sources said. Lopez and Humphries, who are both free agents, would go to Orlando in sign-and-trade deals.
That is a hell of a lot, but the Nets still do have options.
The NBA is a copycat league. And when owners/GMs see how quickly Miami went from nothing to NBA champions, the new formula of success seems to be to acquire as much star/superstar talent as possible, then worry about filling the fringes later.
A rich owner who doesn’t care about paying three guys MAX contracts will do such a thing.
With the moves we’ve made, we need to see which player is better . . . truly better . . Smith or Horford. With no JJ here, we’ll get to really see that this year. Once we see this, that’s when you possibly move one of them in a package for a better player.
Or if both prove that they can really gel as a duo, all you need is a superstar guard to complete the package.
I still say James Harden will be a big time target of teams next season. I thought he would be #1 on the Nets radar in 2013. But with JJ gone, he may be #1 on the Hawks radar. Team Harden with Horford/Smith, and that is a nice nucleus for the future.

In the above scenario, it’s win win. Keep Dwight, re-sign Josh, and you have all kinds of cap room to still sign CP3.
And you have your 1st pick next season for help also.
Lose Dwight – go ahead and lose Smoove also then, and you have only Jenkins under contract for next season at 1.4 mill. or so.
You can build a great team thru Free Agency then.
We have the inside track on Dwight if we want it I would think.
