Atlanta Hawks: Hawks agree to trade Joe Johnson to New Jersey, Marvin Williams to Utah

The Hawks and Nets have agreed to terms on a trade that would send All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn for multiple players with expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.

Update: The Hawks also have agreed to trade forward Marvin Williams to Utah for point guard Devin Harris, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.

Trades can’t be officially consummated until the NBA moratorium ends on July 11 but the person said the Hawks have agreed on the framework of the deals with the Nets and Jazz.

The person said in exchange for Johnson, the Hawks would receive Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson and Jordan Williams from the Nets. Atlanta also would receive the lottery-protected, 2013 first-round draft pick that the Nets acquired in a trade with the Rockets.

Williams is meeting with the Nets and Mavericks today. The Nets plan to pair Johnson with Williams and re-sign free-agent center Brook Lopez to form the core of the team when it plays its first season in Brooklyn in 2012-13.

It was initially believed Atlanta’s deal with the Nets is contingent on Williams agreeing to re-sign with Brooklyn but multiple reports now say the agreement will remain in place even if Williams decides to go elsewhere.

If the deal goes through, the Hawks would be left with less talent but with more ability to make major moves in the future after shedding Johnson’s contract. Such flexibility was the stated goal of Hawks GM Danny Ferry after he was hired last week.

Johnson, 31, is owed nearly $90 million over the final four years of a contract he signed in summer 2010. It was the richest contract in the league at the time, though Derrick Rose now is owed more than Johnson since signing a contract extension.

The Hawks could be in position to clear roughly $30 million in salary-cap space after the 2012-13 season. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard are among the players eligible to become free agents next summer.

@bellamy so u want josh to get traded? Y and if yes for who?

……..

I am happy to trade anyone on the roster if it upgrades the team long term. Josh, Al, JT, pick one. I have been a Hawks fan for over four decades. I am not wedded to any one individual.

On a positive note today is about as good a day in the offseason for the Hawks as I can recall.

Today’s is a day of celebration for all Hawks fans. We shed a lot of crap from our hands, with JJ we would not have won anything in 100 years. Now I hope that the Marvin for Devin deal is confirmed. Up until now, Ferry is impeccable, I will always thank him for these moves, now I don’t want to hear about Brandon Roy, he is a mess like Johnson. Lets leave Morrow and Jenkins on the 2 spot. They will be good. We will be a better team, I have no doubt. Joe and Marvin took any will to live just by watching them, I am completely happy.

drmaryb,

Whats up. I was thinking about you when these deals went down wondering when you was going to show up. That is why I have always said you can always get rid of bad contracts you just have to be commmitted and the best part is Hawks didnt get a bad contract back.

Will see what other moves Hawks makes which i think they will make some minor moves but i think the Hawks will make playoffs probably between 6-8 seed but the cap space will be key to see what happens and who they pick up next season. I also think that Larry Drew will be on the hot seat and I dont believe he will be back since I dont believe he is a Ferry type guy as far as coach goes.

Grandad,

Agreed with your post on Dwight Howard. He doesnt seem like he handles pressure well and his decisions off the court rival anything Lebron James did. Seems to have some serious character issues.

WIll be looking forward to the summer league games and the new rookies.

Slimjr when Hawks play in Bk come to Bk and linkup that should be a fun game.

I am kinda down w/Marc Stein (ESPN) on this one …….imagine Horford/Smoove/ D12 all clogging the paint.
Despite some pretty shots by Smoove this year (and some flat-out head scratchers), we all know we don’t want him on the perimeter on a consistent basis…..Horford does have a nice pick-and-pop game, but is that what you want from your 6′10″ frontcourt player? Dwight? There is a reason why ORL offensive setup was to have shooters + him, too much congestion and defensive attention in the middle for any real slashing to the hoop or any other ORL player to maneuver .

I don’t see Dwights’ potential acquisition in 2013 ad the magic potion (pardon pun) as its cracked up to be. Talented, yes ….be all to end all ……..eh, not so much.

SF options….

Trade targets: Not many trade targets out there that play SF and only have one year left on their contracts. Corey Brewer is clearly the best option. Milwaukee has Mike Dunleavy.

Possible soon to be free agents: Rashard Lewis and Josh Childress.

Current free agents: Saw where Hawks had interest in Devin Ebanks….Then there’s Matt Barnes, Mickael Pietrus, Grant Hill, Damien Wilkins, Andres Nocioni, etc…

Internal option: Pape Sy

I would like the Hawks to be winners and I like the courage it took Ferry to work some deals immediately. Everyone wants to bring in Dwight Howard. I want the Hawks to win, and Howard might do that. But I dno’t like Howard plays, acts or thinks. Too many times I’ve seen him swinging lethal elbows and too many times acting like a jerk. And getting away with it. He’s got talent and is athletic but I’ll pass. Plus, according to what I’ve read here, the Joe deal isn’t really a done deal if Willilams needs to sign with New Jersey first. Correct me if I’m wrong..

Orlando now probably thinks they can unload all of their bad contracts in separate deals like the Hawks: Turkoglu (2 yrs $17.4M as only $6M of his $12M salary is guaranteed next year), Big Baby (3 yrs $19.4M), JRich (3 yrs $19M), and Duhon (2 yrs $7.6M).

Dwight Howard nor CP3 will likely be coming here, but keep on dreaming fellow fans. Our best best is to go after a shotblocking center like Hibbert or Chandler, keep Horford and Smith, and surround them with top level 3pt shooting. We have this in Morrow/ Jenkins. Now we need our center and we will be a elite team in the East. As currently constructed, were still a top 5 team in the East, so peoples talk of the 13 lotto is just dumb.

I don’t know nothing about those player, but I do know that we are not going to get any better, Johnson was a good player and good team to help us with the new player, what’s exactly make Ferry think we will win more game. It’s not about how the player play it all about how the other team can play better than Hawks. I don’t know what I can say beside just wait n see what the team will do. I won’t be surprise if we lost too many game and don’t ever blame it on the Coach at all. Ferry and the memeber of the Hawks team got to figure out what to do instead of worry about trade and looking for first draft pick. I don’t care who and what but they should not rush to trade Johnson for no apprently without look at the other side of the mirror. I know for fact that Hawks will never get into the final play off not because of the player or coach but because all other team have good player than we do. Miami, OKC, Boston and LA Lakers have much better player and much better of knows how to handle the ball so stick with Johnson would have be the happy day of my life but I can say anything more because everything think Ferry did a good job

Danny Ferry just made the Nets a top team and killed the Hawks, lol. Orlando will have picks also and is a better City than ATL, plus no state tax. Orlando will get the best players and ATL got the scrubs. Howard, Johnson, Wallace, Williams, all unselfish players and above all, good defenders. Welcome to b-ball hell Hawks. Oh yeah, if Josh stays on this team, its not about winning at all, because there wont be any, the destinations will be the Nets, because of New York, and still the Heat.

Okay if this B-ball hell it’s the best place to be right now. Brooklyn doesn’t even have cap space anymore not only that their not after Dwight Howard anymore cause he’s made them upset. They pulled the offer.

Right now if you’re a fan of ATL you got to be very excited by Danny Ferry why he’s done more than Rick Sund ever did these last 2 years.

Danny Ferry is a real GM and once he sees what Uncle Drew really is don’t be surprise to see a actual coach come in soon.

Has anyone looked at Morrow’s career shooting stats?

And last year’s clutch stats (during his worse year as a pro shooting wise):

http://www.82games.com/1112/CSORT11.HTM

The guy hit 50% and 46% of his FG / 3ptrs in the clutch (92% of those shots are assisted – credit it to Deron, so the were, certainly, spot up shots).

Morrow is a terrific shooter and pretty decent scorer which could be useful this year and eventually may be retained at a decent price if he pans out as a contributor.

Last year he scored 42 points against Minny so there is little doubt that he can bring some offense if we are in need of some.

From Mark Bradley;

At the rate Ferry is moving, he might be able to convince the NBA to replay the final seconds of Game 6 against Boston from 1988, and make it so that Dominique Wilkins (and not Cliff Levingston) takes the last shot this time..

Is it too late for Ferry to run for Mayor of Atlanta?

I’m not surprised if Josh now has an open mind (after these moves). But I didn’t expect this kind of move from Ferry, especially not this quick. I thought all he would do was amnesty Marvin, and sign a solid bench player or 2.

As for D12 to the Nets, the latest rumor says BK will offer Lopez and Humphries in a SNT, Brooks, and 2-3 first round picks for Dwight.

A lot of posters on here are complaining about the players we just received. The trade wasn’t about the players YOU IDIOTS. It was about clearing salary and having 20-30 million to spend on free agents after the upcoming season. In addition, we now have 2 first round picks and both should be pretty high picks 10-15. I don’t believe great players will not come to Atlanta. It is a basketball town and will support a team with a star and that is competitive. The Hawks with Dominique were supported and the NBA TV ratings in Atlanta are strong for the playoffs and teams with stars. With 20-30 million to spend next year, we can sign a star…Chris Paul, Dwight, …you never know. Money talks and 30 million talks.

So true.

Rarely do you see a 20-point-a-game player disappear in the playoffs. Rarely do you see one of the highest paid athletes in the world, thumb his nose at his own team’s fans, the same fans who at least partially pay his salary.

I just find it so funny how people are nitpicking over these two deals. Everyone on this blog wanted Marvin Gone we actually get what people consider a quality player in return for him.

Now people bitching about Joe being traded for scraps again I say we got out of Joe’s contract 4 years early not 2 years, but 4.

Plus Josh NOW might stay in ATL after all the moves made. Plus we get to see the so called genius Larry Drew do without Joe to rely on.

Having a lineup of Teague, Morrow, Josh, Horford, Zaza for this season is something I can live with.

We take a step backward, but it’s a smart step backwards.

If its true that the Nets are offering Lopez, Humphries, Brooks, and picks for Dwight & Turkoglu, then Lopez & Humphries are about to get paid. You hear me? Dwight & Turk make just over $30M this year. Brooklyn will have to send back somewhere around $24M to make the deal work, and Brooks makes like $2M. Either the Nets pizz off Gerald Wallace and include him in the trade, or you’re about to see Lopez & Humphries get some nice contracts (they may have to throw in Green). Lopez at $12M??? Humphries at $10M???

Someone mentioned amnesty. That’s a new element in the union contract under which a GM can dump an underachiever’s salary. It’s something a team can only do once. Marvin Williams would have been a candidate for that, but now he’s heading to Utah. Ferry got rid of the two biggest salary problems without resorting to the amnesty, meaning we can still have a bust down the road.

I think he did a great job here. And I really doubt he’s done.

DS

Just Joe: good point, what Chris Broussard is reporting doesn’t make a lot of sense unless the nets include Wallace. And in that case, the nets would have $60M tied to 3 players. I say we have a better chance at landing Dwight.

vava74

Teague / Harris
Morrow /Jenkins
…. / …. / Stevenson
J-Smoove/ Ivan / Scott / Jordan Williams
Horford / Zaza /Petro

Let’s face it, for the moment we are looking at a 41 win team at best, unless Teague takes another major step forward or Ferry brings something special with a new trade.

Morrow and Jenkins will not handle the rock, they will strictly sit on the wing and shoot, so Teague will have plenty of time to learn what to do with it.

We can go “big” with Smoove/Horford/Zaza or even with Smoove/Ivan/Horford.

For defensive consistency purposes, if Stevenson still has anything in the tank might be a good option to start the game and keep the perimeter tight since both Morrow and Jenkins are poor defenders… with Morrow playing some minutes at the SF slot as a corner shooter.

As I was saying yesterday, the Hawks will be a lottery team this coming season. I don’t expect Ferry to make a trade to take back a long-term contract. The light is at the end of a 12 month tunnel. There is no harm in having to go into the tank for a single season (as long as it is a single season). If all goes well, the Hawks will have 2 1st round picks in the 10-18 range next season and a boat-load of cap space.

“He got his Coach fired / then lied about it.” – G-Dad

Grandad, I don’t think you have all the facts regarding Dwight’s situation in Orlando. He didn’t get SVG fired. SVG got himself fired by humiliating the franchise player after he opted in to the final year on his contract to placate Orlando’s fans and not be perceived as the bad guy.

There are two schools of thought regarding why Dwight opted in. One is that the Magic threatened to send him to the Lakers if he didn’t opt in, where he would have to play with Kobe, who considered him a third option. The second school of thought is that Dwight honestly wanted to give it one more run with the Orlando squad and do right by Orlando’s fans.

Do you really believe that Dwight was so scared of playing with Kobe for 6 weeks that he gave up his right to become an unrestricted free agent and put his situation in the power of ORL’s front office? I find that implausible. I think Dwight is a guy who really wants to be liked. He didn’t want to leave Orlando as a villain, so he wanted to give it one last playoff run.

Then, after Orlando scores this unbelievable coup by getting Dwight under contract for another year, SVG humiliates Dwight in front of the entire sporting world. Who do you think SVG got his information from? The answer is obvious. He got his information from Bob Vander Weide, the former head of the Magic front office who resigned his position after Dwight called him out for drunk dialing. Vander Weide may have stepped down from his managerial role, but he’s still married to the owners daughter. So he’s still around the team. And he will live the rest of his life with the humiliation Dwight caused him. What better way to get back at Dwight then, just as he thinks he’s returned to hero status with Orlando’s fans, have SVG call him out as a coach killer.

SVG’s actions have done irreperable harm to the Orlando franchise. Don’t question Dwight’s character when he has never showed up to work under the influence of alchohol. And keep in mind that Dwight has every right to complain about SVG behind closed doors. He never publicly called for SVG’s ouster. SVG took what should have been an internal discussion and aired it in public to create a media spectacle.
