Atlanta Hawks: Hawks agree to trade Joe Johnson to New Jersey, Marvin Williams to Utah

The Hawks and Nets have agreed to terms on a trade that would send All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn for multiple players with expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.

Update: The Hawks also have agreed to trade forward Marvin Williams to Utah for point guard Devin Harris, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.

Trades can’t be officially consummated until the NBA moratorium ends on July 11 but the person said the Hawks have agreed on the framework of the deals with the Nets and Jazz.

The person said in exchange for Johnson, the Hawks would receive Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson and Jordan Williams from the Nets. Atlanta also would receive the lottery-protected, 2013 first-round draft pick that the Nets acquired in a trade with the Rockets.

Williams is meeting with the Nets and Mavericks today. The Nets plan to pair Johnson with Williams and re-sign free-agent center Brook Lopez to form the core of the team when it plays its first season in Brooklyn in 2012-13.

It was initially believed Atlanta’s deal with the Nets is contingent on Williams agreeing to re-sign with Brooklyn but multiple reports now say the agreement will remain in place even if Williams decides to go elsewhere.

If the deal goes through, the Hawks would be left with less talent but with more ability to make major moves in the future after shedding Johnson’s contract. Such flexibility was the stated goal of Hawks GM Danny Ferry after he was hired last week.

Johnson, 31, is owed nearly $90 million over the final four years of a contract he signed in summer 2010. It was the richest contract in the league at the time, though Derrick Rose now is owed more than Johnson since signing a contract extension.

The Hawks could be in position to clear roughly $30 million in salary-cap space after the 2012-13 season. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard are among the players eligible to become free agents next summer.

First of all I’m shocked we are talking about the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks did this?

So let’s say every other deal falls thru, and we don’t land Dwight. We go into this season with a squad looking like:

Teague/Harris – Fantastic. Best PG position since Mookie.
Morrow/Jenkins/Hazell? – Not fantastic
Josh? Maybe???
Al/Ivan/Scott/Jordan Williams?
ZaZa/Petro

You know, we’ll be ok next season with that lineup – but I’m not sure we’re even a playoff team. Yuck. Rebuilding is terrible.

The next season, the only guy under contract is Al at 12m. We can spend a ton.

2013/14 – Al 12m
Josh 15 m
Dwight 20 m
Paul 20 m

67 million – filler for the rest. If that’s the direction that Ferry is going, that’s a Championship caliber squad right there.

And if you want Josh at the 4, then trade Al for a couple of pieces.

Git 'em up, gone.

@Ben,

not pretending to know what the Magic would want, but Wallace would give them a solid 3, and think would work well with Anderson who is a stretch 4, and Nicholson and Big baby all available at the pf position. i dont see them wanting Humphries either. Lets hope the magic sees it your way and says no to Brooklyn.

On one hand it’s about damned time. On the other hand, we need to find out real fast who likes to be “the one”. Maybe Harris is our new Mr. BigShot, but at the least it will force Coach Drew to coach x’s and o’s instead of relying on clearouts and his famous “Hot Potato” philosphy where the last guy holding the ball when the shot clock runs out shoots it. He will have to do better this season.

The Magic will not trade D12 to Brooklyn. Orlando is feeling as if D12 strong armed them into making a deal there. And the last thing they will do is reward him with a deal going there (especially when Brooklyn can not trade their draft pick next season). There are 4-5 teams willing to trade for D12 without an extension. No way he ends up in Brooklyn. Wade and Lebron both took pay cuts to play together with Bosh. Williams nor Johnson (too late for Joe) will take pay cuts so D12 can come there a year later.

Still got a ways to go…

But madddddd props to Ferry for positioning us in a way to even be in the coversation. His 2 moves today have dominated ESPN.com and have literally rocked the basketball world.

Who would’ve thought the Joe would be the first domino to fall resulting in reshaping the landscape of the league?

Essentially that’s what happened. Now, D12’s stuck in Orlando and likely won’t have the ability to get to NJ seeing that they don’t have the financial makeup to sign him.

Crazyy day.

Joe just took a major hit to his paycheck with those Jersey taxes! He’s got a house here that needs a new owner as well.

I haven’t felt this good since we beat Boston in Game 6 of ‘07. It has been a long wait to feel like we’re doing some good things here.

With that Josh jumper still being a threat every time down the court, I still have hopes that Danny has an idea how to prove to Josh what his strengths are.

So Slim, you expecting Al to pack his bags next?

You know why Josh is a happy Hawk? He’s about to enter FA and he thinks his nimbers are going to grow big time to stay here. He’s our highest paid Hawk for now, and I am sure he wants to climb north of $15M.

Could Zaza be seen now as part of a package? Teague? Is D12 our only option?

A Rolling Stop!

Looks like Mr. Ferry just pulled up to a stop sign, looked both ways and, kept rolling. Good job Danny boy, finally an outside perspective has been taken to this unbalanced roster whom, I had grown quite weary of watching and assessing over.

She’s back. Wassup Najeh? I’m all over your perspective, so sign me up to all your comments. While I’m sad to see Mr. Johnson go, it had to be done. It’s more about capology than who comes back in a trade here.

What I`m about to say will be very unpopular.

Dwight Howard is a young man who has lost his way.
I`m usually the 1st to give a 2nd chance.
But what D.H. did for this past yr was so troubling
that I find it hard to wish him back home.

He got his Coach fired / then lied about it.
He quit on his team in more ways than one, more than once.
He is clearly not a leader.
His predilection is ‘`self ‘` 1st; team in arrears.

His skills are unique and Hall 0` Fame-esque
-yet- his leadership suggests,
he is not a champion any more than Joe Johnson.
In fact – Joe was a better teammate.

I`m not even countering the fact;
whether it would be a coup to obtain him.

We already have Josh [for now] who is at best a risk;
when it comes to intangibles.
Pairing Josh with his adolescent friend;
one who has already shown even more immaturity than Josh;
might back-fire and set Josh back even further.

I guess what I`m saying is:
while on the surface Josh and Dwight seem like dream-teammates;
perhaps we should step back and think twice.

It`s like our mothers used to say:
” measure twice and cut once “.

Wonder if we could send Jordan Williams to Denver for Quincy Miller. Guy was a lottery talent at one point and fell off hard for coming out too early, but he will find NO time in Denver’s system for the forseeable future and we currently have no SF’s on the roster.

I wish joe and marv much success…. We wouldny have gotten to the playoffs without them….. I will miss those amazing 3s from near half court from joe…. Marvin just wasnt aggressive enough… He shouldve demanded the ball more often…. Instead his confidence went down and josh confidence kept growing because I guess marvin didnt see himself as an elite, he fell into the trap of being an average roll player

If the Hawks don’t sign a starting caliber FA SF, it looks like Josh will have to move to SF and rookie draft pick Scott will start at PF. Another unanswered question is will rookie Jenkins start at SG, or will one of our new acquisitions, like DHarris. If we end up moving Josh to SF, we might as well start Zaza and move Horford to PF. That would require getting a backup center that can give us a lot more than than the likes of Dampier or Collins.
