Atlanta Hawks: Hawks agree to trade Joe Johnson to New Jersey, Marvin Williams to Utah

The Hawks and Nets have agreed to terms on a trade that would send All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn for multiple players with expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.

Update: The Hawks also have agreed to trade forward Marvin Williams to Utah for point guard Devin Harris, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.

Trades can’t be officially consummated until the NBA moratorium ends on July 11 but the person said the Hawks have agreed on the framework of the deals with the Nets and Jazz.

The person said in exchange for Johnson, the Hawks would receive Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson and Jordan Williams from the Nets. Atlanta also would receive the lottery-protected, 2013 first-round draft pick that the Nets acquired in a trade with the Rockets.

Williams is meeting with the Nets and Mavericks today. The Nets plan to pair Johnson with Williams and re-sign free-agent center Brook Lopez to form the core of the team when it plays its first season in Brooklyn in 2012-13.

It was initially believed Atlanta’s deal with the Nets is contingent on Williams agreeing to re-sign with Brooklyn but multiple reports now say the agreement will remain in place even if Williams decides to go elsewhere.

If the deal goes through, the Hawks would be left with less talent but with more ability to make major moves in the future after shedding Johnson’s contract. Such flexibility was the stated goal of Hawks GM Danny Ferry after he was hired last week.

Johnson, 31, is owed nearly $90 million over the final four years of a contract he signed in summer 2010. It was the richest contract in the league at the time, though Derrick Rose now is owed more than Johnson since signing a contract extension.

The Hawks could be in position to clear roughly $30 million in salary-cap space after the 2012-13 season. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard are among the players eligible to become free agents next summer.

MC, reported that the Hawks tried to trade Marvin fore the past two seasons and Ferry did it within the 1st week on the job. My gosh, what does that say about 30+ yrs of experience that Sund has in the NBA. Put Sund on the plane with Marvin to Utah, please.

I know we all love ESPN and some of the stories they generate, but I do love the article throwing a little glimmer of what could be next offseason…Our Big 3 of CP3, Dwight and Josh. Could you image Philips packed to the rafters for that team? I sure could. The PG that badly wanted to play here out of college finally getting to do it teamed with the prodigal son and his best bud blocking shots and providing highlight slams every quarter. Can you say the Hawks would finally be relevant again? I know I can.

Yes, I know this probably won’t happen. But Ferry has at least put us in a place where we can dream…and there actually be a chance of it happening.

As much as I love Horford, if we could get this three together, then let’s get Dwight here now.

“If the Nets sign Williams to a max contract, they will have $50 million on the books for 2013-14 to just three players, Williams, Wallace and Johnson. Once they fill the roster, they will be over the cap, which is expected to land around $60 million or $61 million for 2013-14. That means Brooklyn will have no space to sign Howard (or Andrew Bynum, or any star player) in free agency.” – Zach Lowe, SI.com

Shaun Powell
Hawks spent millions from that draft mistake, when you add up contracts given to Mike Bibby, Speedy Claxton, failed picks and to extend Marvin.

Appears in NBA Free Agency, Miami Heat

Been saying Bibby cost us the us mint for a long time. Speedy was at least covered by insurance.

Now where is that smart group of fans who predicted Danny wanted six years so he could sit back and watch for a year before making any moves, that status quo would lead the way as he gave them one more chance at the promised land.

Technically the hawks don’t have to keep any of the nets players, when the season begins there contract ends, note expiring contracts, great move by Danny, and the hawks and fans will benefit greatly from this.

Come on guys, this is al Sunds work that he has been working on for months. This is just as much Sunday as the draft everyone said Sunday was really in charge of and why Ferry insisted the Sunday stick around as a consultant to sorta hold his hands. This has Sund’s signature all over it.

Also because that idea of his is being directly contradicted by everyone else commenting on the issue.

Basically it would take a massive change of heart by Orlando’s GM to consent to a Dwight-to-Nets trade at this point. The Magic have established that they don’t want what the Nets are offering.

The Nets look like a 4th seed atm.

Williams
Johnson
Wallace
Humphries
Lopez

Brooks
Green
Taylor
Karaman

Yea they’ll need to add some more people to get a strong bench. But you are looking at a good Brooklyn Nets team. It’s a VERY balanced starting five. You get very good offense and very good defense. You have two very good ball handlers and two very good rebounders. And then you have Wallace who I see as the glue to hold that core together. Seeing as though he can basically defend, score, rebound, handles, and block.

I don’t think the Nets are getting enough credit for this. If everything falls into place..we are more then likely looking at a 4 to 5 seeded Nets team.

Atlanta lost it’s chance of getting CP3 when he 1st entered the draft he wanted to come to ATL, but at the time the management (Excluding Dominique Wilkins he was the only one that saw CP3 for his talent) and it’s star players Josh Smith and Josh Childress said “NO”, but I guess everyone has forgotten that story that was written by AJC……CP3 needs to give ATL the duce sign and keep moving….

LOL @ Hollinger:

“With two landmark moves in a period of hours Monday that wiped nearly $90 million off the payroll, the Hawks went from a franchise that considered losing in the second round of the playoffs to be the pinnacle of human achievement to being one that could matter.”

According to Shamsports, after 2011-12 money fell off the books with the new fiscal year for the NBA, the Hawks will have about $174 million in future committed salaries on the books on July 10th. On July 11th, when the moratorium is lifted, and assuming today’s trades actually go through, the Hawks will wipe almost $90 million in future committed salaries off their books, going from about $174 million to about $85 million.
