Atlanta Hawks: Hawks agree to trade Joe Johnson to New Jersey, Marvin Williams to Utah

The Hawks and Nets have agreed to terms on a trade that would send All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn for multiple players with expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.

Update: The Hawks also have agreed to trade forward Marvin Williams to Utah for point guard Devin Harris, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.

Trades can’t be officially consummated until the NBA moratorium ends on July 11 but the person said the Hawks have agreed on the framework of the deals with the Nets and Jazz.

The person said in exchange for Johnson, the Hawks would receive Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson and Jordan Williams from the Nets. Atlanta also would receive the lottery-protected, 2013 first-round draft pick that the Nets acquired in a trade with the Rockets.

Williams is meeting with the Nets and Mavericks today. The Nets plan to pair Johnson with Williams and re-sign free-agent center Brook Lopez to form the core of the team when it plays its first season in Brooklyn in 2012-13.

It was initially believed Atlanta’s deal with the Nets is contingent on Williams agreeing to re-sign with Brooklyn but multiple reports now say the agreement will remain in place even if Williams decides to go elsewhere.

If the deal goes through, the Hawks would be left with less talent but with more ability to make major moves in the future after shedding Johnson’s contract. Such flexibility was the stated goal of Hawks GM Danny Ferry after he was hired last week.

Johnson, 31, is owed nearly $90 million over the final four years of a contract he signed in summer 2010. It was the richest contract in the league at the time, though Derrick Rose now is owed more than Johnson since signing a contract extension.

The Hawks could be in position to clear roughly $30 million in salary-cap space after the 2012-13 season. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard are among the players eligible to become free agents next summer.

O’B,

Thanks. I just don’t think Ferry is finished yet, and I’m thinking he’ll acquire a SF. Fun to watch it all play out.

The point isn’t that LeBron left first –it was that he didn’t stay because Ferry couldn’t surround him with enough talent and therefore Cleveland imploded. Here we had talent–the proper course is get us an acusition to put us over the top not start “over” with our two best players gone–though getting rid of Williams is a deinite plus.

This trade is only a success if Josh stays and Dwight comes PERIOD. Otherwise we’re one year and one more bad trade way from become Charlotte!! We don’t want to be Charlotte!

I’m fine with the Marvin trade.

Some of you guys don’t get it. We’re getting out of two horrible contracts, not 3 and 5 years from now…but THIS SEASON! This means we have legitmate money to spend next offseason. I’m not saying we’ll get Supes or CP3, but we can at least get in the conversation. Joe was one of my favorite Hawks, but he wasn’t worth what he ws paid. We had to get out of that contract to be able to compete for FAs. Williams was a mistake to begin with. Great guy, but not worth the pick or getting resigned. Ferry was a genious to trade both of these guys, one with an albatross contract and the other known to be on the way out of here for 3 years. We weren’t going for quality. We were going for short contracts.

• Josh Smith is from Atlanta.

• Dwight Howard is from Atlanta.

• Dwight Howard and Josh Smith played together in high school and remain friends; in fact Howard was the best man in Smith’s wedding.

• Chris Paul is not from Atlanta, but is from North Carolina and wanted to play in Atlanta coming out of college.

A potential Dwight-Smoove duo in the frontcourt is tantalizing to say the least. And it sounds like it could be a real possibility. The Hawks now have the assests (expiring contract and cap space) to get Dwight, and they also have a trump card in Smoove, who seems to be re-energized by Ferry’s moves. Additionally, Dwight’s preferred destination is now out of play.

I don’t care that Dwight is a headcase. He’s a headcase who’s taken a team to the Finals. That’s two rounds further than the Hawks have ever been. And he’s never had a running mate as good as Smoove.

I’ve never allowed myself to dream as a Hawks fan. I’m allowing myself to dream tonight.

Utah wanted Marvin because the only guys on the roster to play SF were Millsap (PF) and Hayward (SG). They also had four PG’s on their roster, and in the playoffs they shot 20% from 3 while attempting just over 11 per game. The regular season wasn’t much better where they shot 32% attempting 12 per game.

Per ESPN…The most obvious way is to wait until 2013. Atlanta can sign Paul and Howard to max contracts next summer, re-sign Smith for roughly the same money he makes now (which would trump any other offer he’d likely get since the Hawks can give him a five-year deal), and likely juuuuuust squeeze in under the current cap.

Hawks spent millions from that draft mistake, when you add up contracts given to Mike Bibby, Speedy Claxton, failed picks and to extend Marvin.

Has any franchise been hurt by a mistake more than the Hawks? When they passed on a chance to draft Deron Williams or Chris Paul, and took Marvin Williams instead, entire fan base was turned off.

Always thought Danny Ferry got a bad rap in Cleveland. He made mistakes, but so does every GM, and his mistakes weren’t franchise-killing. Anyway, he’s off to a major start in the ATL.

Whenever the subject of Dwight Howard returning home someday to play for the Hawks was raised, Dwight (softly) shot down the idea. Since leaving the ATL outta high school, he’s never lived there in the off-season, never warmed to the idea of returning. For any reason.

I’m a little surprised they bought out Farmar as it seems like he would have been a good player to flip to another team. Oh well, the Guard Liquidation Sale has started. Can we attach a buyout contract on the second page of Stevenson’s S&T? He could break Gary Payton’s record for the shortest tenure in Hawks franchise history. I want neither Stevenson nor his beard on the squad next season.
