The Hawks and Nets have agreed to terms on a trade that would send All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn for multiple players with expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.
Update: The Hawks also have agreed to trade forward Marvin Williams to Utah for point guard Devin Harris, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.
Trades can’t be officially consummated until the NBA moratorium ends on July 11 but the person said the Hawks have agreed on the framework of the deals with the Nets and Jazz.
The person said in exchange for Johnson, the Hawks would receive Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson and Jordan Williams from the Nets. Atlanta also would receive the lottery-protected, 2013 first-round draft pick that the Nets acquired in a trade with the Rockets.
Williams is meeting with the Nets and Mavericks today. The Nets plan to pair Johnson with Williams and re-sign free-agent center Brook Lopez to form the core of the team when it plays its first season in Brooklyn in 2012-13.
It was initially believed Atlanta’s deal with the Nets is contingent on Williams agreeing to re-sign with Brooklyn but multiple reports now say the agreement will remain in place even if Williams decides to go elsewhere.
If the deal goes through, the Hawks would be left with less talent but with more ability to make major moves in the future after shedding Johnson’s contract. Such flexibility was the stated goal of Hawks GM Danny Ferry after he was hired last week.
Johnson, 31, is owed nearly $90 million over the final four years of a contract he signed in summer 2010. It was the richest contract in the league at the time, though Derrick Rose now is owed more than Johnson since signing a contract extension.
The Hawks could be in position to clear roughly $30 million in salary-cap space after the 2012-13 season. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard are among the players eligible to become free agents next summer.

Josh realizes that he may just get his wish now that he sees the Hawks have a GM that’s not afraid to make moves.
He’s a little nervous.

Everybody is real happy right now,
But how are we going to feel if somehow the Nets pull off a deal and get D12? He says he wants to play there an nowhere else. Im sure there are enough loopholes for them to make it happen. They wanted to hang on to Green and Brooks for a reason. Think about it, Brooks is a 2 guardjust like Joe and Green plays SF same as Wallace….so why you think they woldnt give them up unless they still plan on making it happen with Dwight? Yeah we will have cap space, but we might just have helped the Nets become a championship contender too.

Interesting. Are we to assume in any sort of way that this is to please Smith? Is that the suggestion here? Ha. There is a twist here, and we have yet to see it finished.

Glad they are gone but those people that think the Hawks with be a 7 or 8 seed next yr must be using some really good stuff. Back to the Hawks I have known for years but hopefully a much better team in a few yrs. Still amazes me how many people just assume that we can get whomever we want in free agency in the next few yrs. I remember the last time the team was blown up and got lots of cap space. That didn’t work out too well. Hope this time is better.

Sautee, I don;t kow. The old rules had some provisions for trading a newly acquired player by himself vs. trading him with other players… I think they were different timeframes. I’ll look for it. Obviously, teams who need guards with expiring contracts pretty much have a single place to go. Ferry has cornered the market on that commodity. I’m sure they will wait for the 30 or 45 or however many days is required.
Do these trades happen tomorrow or do they have to wait until the free agent signing period starts (July 11th I think).? I assume the Joe trade has to wait since we’re getting Stevenson in a S&T, but the Marvin trade should happen officially tomorrow.

glw…if you’re Orlando are you taking Lopez, Brooks, Green, and a 2014 pick (can’t trade next year’s) for Dwight? That would be Lopez on the new deal “of his choice” knowing that he’s the key to the trade. That’s the same Lopez that only played 5 games last year, and the year before averaged less than 6 rebounds per game. Would you feel comfortable with an Anderson / Lopez front line?

Remember the Joe Johnson deal… cost the owners tons of money, which caused a huge law-suit between owners, which eventually led to the Thrashers being pushed out of Atlanta. Hawks never get past the 2nd round and we lost a NHL franchise all because of this and now he is no longer here.
That Atlanta Spirit….they’ve done more damage to Atlanta than Sherman.

So guys, I hope we all realize that Larry Drew was just fired! The day that the Hawks stopped accepting mediocrity, is the day that LD’s timer was set to be let go. There’s no way that Ferry entrusts whoever he signs next offseason with LD. This will be LD last season as Hawks coach, and that’s id he even coaches this season. LD will have to pull a coaching job similar to what Rivers did in Orlando to keep this job.

I think GM Ferry watched the tape of Game 2 against Boston and realized that this “core” had already taken several steps backwards. So far so good, but it is clear that more need to go. I know that some here are refusing to let go of the “organic growth” idea, but fans should have to wait a few more seasons for certain players to get it.

I’m excited about this but I’m still a little apprehensive about the type of team Ferry will mesh together after what happened in Cleveland. I guess we’ll find out.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Josh. I don’t really see how we can continue on with he and Al playing the 4 and 5 positions and be any more successful than we already have been, especially when you consider the type of contract that Josh is probably going to get. If it were up to me, I think I’d try and trade him for a really good draft pick or two.

Big Ray, after spending a few years with Tim Duncan, I’m sure that Ferry’s first intentions were to appease Josh Smith, because there was no other reason to trade Joe or Marvin other than to make sour face happy (and I’m sure Josh reminds Ferry of Duncan).
