The Hawks and Nets have agreed to terms on a trade that would send All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn for multiple players with expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.
Update: The Hawks also have agreed to trade forward Marvin Williams to Utah for point guard Devin Harris, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.
Trades can’t be officially consummated until the NBA moratorium ends on July 11 but the person said the Hawks have agreed on the framework of the deals with the Nets and Jazz.
The person said in exchange for Johnson, the Hawks would receive Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson and Jordan Williams from the Nets. Atlanta also would receive the lottery-protected, 2013 first-round draft pick that the Nets acquired in a trade with the Rockets.
Williams is meeting with the Nets and Mavericks today. The Nets plan to pair Johnson with Williams and re-sign free-agent center Brook Lopez to form the core of the team when it plays its first season in Brooklyn in 2012-13.
It was initially believed Atlanta’s deal with the Nets is contingent on Williams agreeing to re-sign with Brooklyn but multiple reports now say the agreement will remain in place even if Williams decides to go elsewhere.
If the deal goes through, the Hawks would be left with less talent but with more ability to make major moves in the future after shedding Johnson’s contract. Such flexibility was the stated goal of Hawks GM Danny Ferry after he was hired last week.
Johnson, 31, is owed nearly $90 million over the final four years of a contract he signed in summer 2010. It was the richest contract in the league at the time, though Derrick Rose now is owed more than Johnson since signing a contract extension.
The Hawks could be in position to clear roughly $30 million in salary-cap space after the 2012-13 season. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard are among the players eligible to become free agents next summer.

If we keep Smooove, we need a coach or player who will biatch slap him every time he grabs a rebound, refuses to pass to the PG, and then jacks a three in a CRITICAL part of the game.

Josh is going to want JJ money when his contract expires, and so will Dwight, and CP3.
The Hawks may be able to have 2 of the 3 with Al in tow, but the remainder of the cast will be street players like myself, who will play for the TV time, gatorade, and locker rooom spread.

We got the Rockets first round pick instead of the Nets which is another smart move since the Nets will probably make the playoffs next year and the Rockets won’t.

What’s Good Big Ray, this news brought me out of blog retirement. My son went to his first football camp this past weekend. He been going to a conditioning camp for a month now. These coaches have been after him for years, so he’s playing football in the fall. I cannot wait.
Big Ray we’ve been praying for a GM like Ferry. I hope all is well with you and the family.

Let me see if my math is right:
We had 6 players under contract: Al, JJ, Marvin, Teague, Zaza, and Smoove
We traded 2 (JJ, and Marvin), we get back 6 – (5 players from NJ and 1 player from Utah)
Now, once this deal is finalized we ill have 10 players under contract, a QO out to Ivan (pending his acceptance) that leaves us with 2 spots to fill the min. roster count of 13 players and what appears to be millions of dollars of potential cap space (via expiring contracts) for Summer 2013.

You a man of your word?
“I’m here regardless of who is on the team.
Can’t the rest of you say the same?” – northcyde
All day.
My 2 cents:
I’m very excited for the future of this organization. It may be true we are not championship level material. Maybe not even 2nd round material. But of the possibilities that have risen with these trades…can’t help but raise the eyebrows of the upcoming free agents. I think it should be clear what Danny Ferry is doing. He’s following the Celtic and Heat blueprint. Pierce/Allen/Garnett ….James/Wade/Bosh….Smith/Howard/Paul??
I hope CP3 realizes he has no chance of winning a title with the Clippers. I’ve not been fond of the Clippers last year and still not. They are still far from being legit title contenders. I;m not saying the Hawks are any closer. But if we manage to get Howard with Smith….then we are automatically in the top 3. That’s considering that CP3 joins them.
Sadly, I will not get my hopes up high. I’ve learned my lesson. It will be brewing in the back of my mind. But again these kind of scenarios are hard to pull off.
In a closing statement….am I the only one that can’t help but think Ferry chose the Nets just to give them Joe to screw them over from signing Howard? With Wallace, JJ, AND Williams…they are cap strapped to sign Howard in any way, shape, or form. It’s a long shot….but don’t the Hawks have the assets now to get Howard? We can give them Horford, expiring contracts, and a first round pick? Isn’t that what the magic have been wanting? You get an All-Star in Horford. You get expiring contracts that will give them cap space to sign their own free agents and they still get a first round pick to rebuild fast.

Wow. Just wow. I love Joe, but that contract is a franchise killer. Marvin needs a change of scenery, and a team that will match his skill set with its tempo.
I think we just went from a 4-seed to an 8-seed next season, but I think we have the potential to be better down the road today than we were yesterday. The key here is building around a real superstar, and how we get one. Is the plan to draft one in ‘13 or ‘14, or to build the framework and poach one from another team in the same period?
Just for getting us out of salary cap purgatory, Danny might have a shot at NBA Exec of the Year — but if he gets us a quality team that’s one player away … and then finds a way to land that one player … well, that would be almost as good as getting rid of this ownership group.
Later,
Don!

Find a small forward i the free agent market. Know u have josh, dwight, and cap space to go after chris paul

Way to go Danny, Super start. Traded right players. Kept Josh Smith, Al Horford, Jeff Teague. Move Horford to 4. We have Smith at 3. Teague at 1. We and other teams need a dominant center. You drafted Jenkins at 2. With the lottery pick next year, get the best dang center possible. Draft well, sign correct free agents, and Hawks have our five players. Sign Smith to a fair but not anchor contract. Keep it up Danny. Great start.

One thing is certain, we can forget about any JSmith and MWilliams for Gasol trade. With the successful trade of JJohnson and MWilliams, some of our more delusional fans have become even more delusional by day dreaming about us automatically signing DHoward and CP3.
With Marvin and JJ gone, we’ll have to sign a starting SF.
