Atlanta Hawks: Hawks agree to trade Joe Johnson to New Jersey, Marvin Williams to Utah

The Hawks and Nets have agreed to terms on a trade that would send All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn for multiple players with expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.

Update: The Hawks also have agreed to trade forward Marvin Williams to Utah for point guard Devin Harris, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.

Trades can’t be officially consummated until the NBA moratorium ends on July 11 but the person said the Hawks have agreed on the framework of the deals with the Nets and Jazz.

The person said in exchange for Johnson, the Hawks would receive Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson and Jordan Williams from the Nets. Atlanta also would receive the lottery-protected, 2013 first-round draft pick that the Nets acquired in a trade with the Rockets.

Williams is meeting with the Nets and Mavericks today. The Nets plan to pair Johnson with Williams and re-sign free-agent center Brook Lopez to form the core of the team when it plays its first season in Brooklyn in 2012-13.

It was initially believed Atlanta’s deal with the Nets is contingent on Williams agreeing to re-sign with Brooklyn but multiple reports now say the agreement will remain in place even if Williams decides to go elsewhere.

If the deal goes through, the Hawks would be left with less talent but with more ability to make major moves in the future after shedding Johnson’s contract. Such flexibility was the stated goal of Hawks GM Danny Ferry after he was hired last week.

Johnson, 31, is owed nearly $90 million over the final four years of a contract he signed in summer 2010. It was the richest contract in the league at the time, though Derrick Rose now is owed more than Johnson since signing a contract extension.

The Hawks could be in position to clear roughly $30 million in salary-cap space after the 2012-13 season. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard are among the players eligible to become free agents next summer.

Nuff said shake&break, WE ARE TRYING TO CHANGE THE CULTURE HERE AND WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS, tired of 1st & 2nd Rd exits in embarrassing fashion, the team capped out, time to go in a new direction. Yeah maybe we are worse next season but the future is so so bright afterwards

I’m not impressed with Harris at PG. Living in the Northeat, I get all of the Nets’ games on YES, and Harris was just not that great.

Maybe this was just to get Marvin’s contract off the books, but what does it mean for Teague?

Danny Boy is blowing this thing up!!!!!!

Sund would never have done any of this.

Marvin seemed like a nice kid but I did not like his game. Couldnt take his man off the dribble, terrible at finishing at the rim, missing a bunch of wide open looks, getting his shot blocked by smaller players..Devin Harris is not the same player he was years ago but all we need him to be is solid..

Kevin, Stevenson is garbage. I watched a lot of Nets games last year and dude was flat out terrible. I hope he is included in a move. I dont want to see him play at all.

I don’t think Josh belongs at SF, but to be honest, if they can get CP3 and Dwight here, I have no problem with Josh playing SF and Al playing PF. They can find a way to make it work.

http://nba-point-forward.si.com/2012/07/02/nets-hawks-joe-johnson-trade/

In a talent in/talent out equation, there is no argument: The Nets win in a landslide. And yet, it is hard to find any big-picture way that the Hawks lose a trade in which they manage to unload a 31-year-old shooting guard who will be paid $25 million when he is 35.

Couldn’t have said it any better. This is the NBA where you lose the best player in a trade and win the trade in the big picture.

Best news of the Summer! We get rid of two nooses but more importantly it seems to signify the ASG may be getting out of the way. This is a very important step to this franchise’s ability to build a team that is respected and can win when it counts.

Mr. Ferry, great moves today, great way to maximize a going nowhere team. Now, take a quantum step, find a trade for Josh Smith, move the coach out, then bring back a team that cares about the community, and not hanging out in the strip clubs. This city deserves a championship team, but first we need champions who walk the walk, not just talk it. Last but not least, meet with the press on the regular to help elevate community support. This city has no loyalty for losers. Good job…
