Atlanta Hawks: Joe Johnson included in Hawks trade talk

Hawks guard Joe Johnson is included among several trade possibilities being discussed by the team but no deals are imminent, according to a person familiar with the talks.

New Hawks GM Danny Ferry is focused on the trade market as he seeks to re-tool the roster. Johnson is owed $90 million over the next four years and trading him could provide the Hawks salary-cap relief and far greater flexibility for the future.

The Hawks have received calls from teams interested in forward Josh Smith but Ferry so far has considered the price to be too high, according to a person with knowledge of the talks. The person said the Lakers and Magic are among the teams who’ve inquired about Smith.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, who first reported the Johnson trade talks, the Nets are looking to pair Johnson with point guard Deron Williams. Williams will be an unrestricted free agent after midnight and Brooklyn is making an effort to entice him to re-sign.

The Hawks still haven’t said if they plan to extend a qualifying offer to forward Ivan Johnson before the midnight deadline. The Hawks were in favor of extending the offer before Ferry’s hire and spent Saturday deliberating the decision with Ferry’s input. If the Hawks don’t extend the offer of about $970,000 for one year, Johnson will become an unrestricted free agent.

Update: The deadline passed with no word from Hawks officials on whether they extended the qualifying offer to Johnson.

BASICALLY…we are tired of REBUILDING every year. And please this time dont go after a bunch of players barely outta high school. This is not a day care center. The Hawks dont need more players with “training wheels”. , and we get to watch them. “grow” into their positions.

WE HAVE TRIED THAT…..That experiment didnt work.

No way you trade him for a bologna sandwich and some old government cheese.

No, no…this isn’t the Billy Knight days of salary dump and cap space cliches. Wait a minute. The ASG is still here….okay, so I’m still a little nervous and you may have a point.

All the same, I can’t see Ferry dumping JJ for any old thing. He’s not insane. That said, assets are only as good as the person managing them. Up til now, asset management has been mediocre at best (on average), and the very best of it since the ASG came to town has been Sund’s ability to put a bench together from scrap contracts.

If we can get Marshon and Lopez for Joe then I say we do it. We can do a lot more with out team once Joe’s contract isnt here. I love Joe but if we can get a better overall team in the future by trading him now I think we should def. do it.

If we trade Joe Johnson for anything containing Johan (the Rick Sund Pick) Petro, that will be a terrible trade. I don’t even like Petro as filler.

Teague/Lowry at Pg I like
KMart/Marshon Brooks at Sg I like
Humphries/Scola at Pf and Al/Zaza/Lopez at C I can like. Who’s at 3? Any 3s out there waiting to be had?

The problem is very old, really. We tried to build around Joe. Joe is not a guy you build around. He’s not a superstar, never has been. Then, we went and paid him like he’s the kind of guy who is a superstar and you can build around.

Essentially, the mistake was made TWICE. Funny….Robert Sarver doesn’t look so stupid now….but I digress.

We might not have taken it on the chin so dang hard if….

1) Billy Knight hadn’t been so chronically allergic to point guards. CP3, Deron, Rondo….all top PGs. All passed over by the “genius” and Mr. Potato Head (Woodson).

2) Billy Knight hadn’t followed that insane debacle by taking Shellhead over Brandon Roy and Rudy Gay.

That led to desperation move of all time and a max contract for Joe. So now we’re gonna take it on the chin…hard. The only question is how the punch is coming. Are we gonna get a$$-raped in a trade for…

1) Al

2) Josh

3) Joe

Anybody’s guess….

The good news is “The house is about to be cleaned.” I am very thankful for Danny Ferry and believe you me, I would rather see a new beginning than the same old ending. This could be an exciting year for the HAWKS and a breath of fresh air for the fans. “Rev in Tampa”, the HAWKS got a B- on the draft. All of this trade talk and movement of players has got the ole adrenalin pumpin. I wanna see the outcome because it could be a lot of fun.

I would just as soon have Ty Taylor and A.Morrow;
if Marshon Brooks is some sort of deal breaker.
Brooks is a low % shooter from long range.
Brooks is more a slasher / than a floor spacer.
Morrow is one of the better shooters in the Assoc.
Ty Taylor would be the perfect back-up pg:
*great defender
*champion mentality [Kansas]
*older / mature (22) graduating sr.

More bldg blocks as Mr Ferry continues the process.

Back got the draft: in my heart of hearts, I was hoping for Moultrie or M Teague. They say rebounding translates, and Moultrie can rebound. Hard worker at MSU also. And Marquis Teague has talent.

That said, been watching some John Jenkins. Player he reminds me most of? Jamal Crawford. Circus shots are us. Just not quite the handles of Crawford, but a truly great shooter, work ethic and competitor.

Didn’t like this Mike Scott guy before the draft. 2 ankle surgeries scare me off. But now that he’s a Hawk, I hope he turns into a beast.

@ Big Ray . . . we don’t have to take anything on the chin if we don’t want to. The Hawks are still a good, but not great team. And JJ is one of the reasons why we’re a good but not great team.

A salary dump means that the ASG simply wants to save money, not improve this team. So what do people want? Dump JJ, then offer another extreme MAX deal to Josh Smith? Is that the deal people want? Wouldn’t that be repeating the same mistake twice?

One thing the ATL fan base has proven, is that they’re not coming out to watch a bad team, no matter if Ferry and ownership try to sell the “rebuilding project”. In ATL, it’s almost more cost effective to stay good, and keep flipping out the “core” pieces, than to completely blow it up and hope for that superstar lottery pick in the draft.

If the future plan for the Hawks is to trade JJ for scraps, then let Smith fall off the books, that is not good for the Hawks at all. Significant cap space means nothing, if you can’t get people to come to your franchise.

Vettledi . . . most people are saying trade him for a dead roach and a stale cracker.

I’m one of the only ones talking about trading him for tangible pieces that can help us now or in the future. The fact is that most of the teams who play the “cap space” game, lose. Bad teams only win when they get that future Hall of Fame type draft pick.

The Hawks missed their chance in 2005 with Paul and possibly Deron.

A team like Golden St has played the cap space and lottery game for years, only to come up short 95% of the time.

Sacramento was a perennial loser, until they flipped their version of Joe Johnson ( Mitch Richmond ), for a young but malcontent big man in Chris Webber. Then things turned around all of a sudden and the franchise did things right for about a 5 year stretch.

But where have they been since they lost Webber and Bibby? Cap space nor draft picks have helped that team.

Until they get that “Hall of Fame” draft pick, the Kings will continue to be bad . . . unless they pull off a trade to get the right player to build around.

Wow… I love this new GM already. Joe Johnson is a bum. He should have never been re-signed. We would have been better off letting him go and giving Jordan Crawford a chance to grow into a star guard. It’s time to let Johnson go. He has no personality and he is only getting in the way of Al Hortford becoming the natural leader of this team.

Some of y’all must not realize that we have around 6.5 million to sign the draft picks and 5 or 6 FAs. Whatever we lose with Joe’s departure we gain on the FA market in bench production that we could not get with 6.5 million dollars. Not to mention we will be done with the iso-joe offense.

Dwight Howard is a crazy guy. Now he went to the union last week seeing if there was a way to get out of his opt-in he took so he can go the Nets?He is a talent but this guy is a absolute tool. i actually have a theory Dwight doesnt want to come to Atlanta because i dont think he would be able to handle the pressue being back home. If he goes to Brooklyn, he will be under extreme pressure even if they play second class fiddle to the Knicks
