Atlanta Hawks: Joe Johnson included in Hawks trade talk

Hawks guard Joe Johnson is included among several trade possibilities being discussed by the team but no deals are imminent, according to a person familiar with the talks.

New Hawks GM Danny Ferry is focused on the trade market as he seeks to re-tool the roster. Johnson is owed $90 million over the next four years and trading him could provide the Hawks salary-cap relief and far greater flexibility for the future.

The Hawks have received calls from teams interested in forward Josh Smith but Ferry so far has considered the price to be too high, according to a person with knowledge of the talks. The person said the Lakers and Magic are among the teams who’ve inquired about Smith.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, who first reported the Johnson trade talks, the Nets are looking to pair Johnson with point guard Deron Williams. Williams will be an unrestricted free agent after midnight and Brooklyn is making an effort to entice him to re-sign.

The Hawks still haven’t said if they plan to extend a qualifying offer to forward Ivan Johnson before the midnight deadline. The Hawks were in favor of extending the offer before Ferry’s hire and spent Saturday deliberating the decision with Ferry’s input. If the Hawks don’t extend the offer of about $970,000 for one year, Johnson will become an unrestricted free agent.

Update: The deadline passed with no word from Hawks officials on whether they extended the qualifying offer to Johnson.

Just Joe . . the Nets currently have a TOTAL payroll of 17 million. Even if they added JJ’s 19.7 million due to him in 2012 – 13, they’d be far enough under the cap to offer Dwight a MAX deal.

Farmar opted out, so they don’t have to worry about him. So that might actually drop it down to 13 million. They have more than enough money for Dwight, and still have Bird Rights to players like Humphries and even Gerald Wallace.

PG: Deron
G: Johnson
F: Wallace
PF: Humpries
C: Dwight

Say bye-bye to ATL and the playoffs if that happens. Miami, Indiana, Boston, and Chicago ( once Rose gets back ) aren’t going anywhere. Philly isn’t going anywhere.

Hawks better flip JJ for something significant. And it won’t be for next year’s 1st round pick of the Nets, seeing that they can’t trade 1st round picks in consecutive years.

LOL . . add a 3rd team to this Ferry, if this deal is to be done. Surprise us. Just don’t give up and trade for scraps.

JJ’s contract is our weakest link now. I’d give him and his contract away if I could. Cap space would mean flexibility to get what you need.

Ok..Who will be hurt if you see JJ and Marvin play at championship level with Jay Z’s and da Russian,Brooklyn Nets?
If Marvin was made into a go to guy and knew everynight dat he was gonna be an option, then i think dat we’re gonna see a different and better player out of him..
And,if JJ is to be made a catch and shoot player then look for 30+ as an average that only Durant can match..

With a coach like Avery,i think da addition of Derron,JJ,and Marvin can be a deadly combo..Remember how Marvin played when JJ was hurt a few years back around all star break??

Marvin needs a coach to make him an option instead of a garbage man and jj needs a coach who will set up the offense to take away the iso joe and make him play catch and shoot, like a ray allen and all hell will break loose in Jersey

If we trade Joe to Brooklyn;
they do not have to match salary.
Brklyn only has $13 mil committed to sal next yr.
*[relying on numbers from news source]
Brklyn is far under the cap.

I do not care if we trade Joe for a Bag 0` Doughnuts;
-then-
let Mr Ferry go to work.

Northcyde….you’re not taking in to account cap holds like the rights to Deron Williams. Deron will make $19M. Joe will make $20M. That gives you less than $20M to sign Dwight, and this without any cap holds. Look at what Miami had to do. You can’t fit three max deals one one team.

northcyde,

Read the below link. Farmer opt in for his final year. Removing Joe contract and getting expiring contracts in return gives the Hawks major cap flexibility next season. Uh, Dwight Howard coming home party.

“If JJ is to be traded, Ferry has to flip this for something significant.”

Being out from under the worst contract in professional sports and opening the possibility of keeping Josh long term is something significant.

As I wrote in March:

http://www.hoopinionblog.com/2012/03/comparing-twilight-of-two-hawks-eras-by.html

“Trade Joe Johnson to any taker for any offer.”

**************************

And teams that do that end up paying for it in the end.

When you have a tangible asset, you flip it for other tangible assets. JJ’s contract may be bad, but you’re still talking about a top 5 SG here.

I mean, unless people NOW think that John Jenkins can be a very good starter caliber 2 guard, you don’t do this deal for scraps.

Even Memphis got Marc Gasol, multiple expiring contracts, and two 1st round picks for Pau Gasol. A JJ deal better be along those lines in which we get back multiple assets that we can use right now, or in the future.

No way you trade him for a bologna sandwich and some old government cheese.

Northcyde, Joe Johnson is a potential Amnesty candidate. The fact that you’re getting from under his contract would simply be good. And the difference between Joe and Josh is Joe is past his prime with declining skills coupled with an increasing price tag. That is a TERRIBLE mix for a GUARD. Also I seen Brooks play quite a bit this season. And Brooks is as good as Joe was at this point in his career. Lopez would not be signed for more than $14-15 a season. And Brooks still has 3 years on his contract with the options. And knowing the possibility of trading Brooks as a second move of the deal is very tempting, because you know a team on the west coast would over pay for him.

Also, I’ve posted possible trades that included Josh. The only difference is while some people on the blog think the Hawks MUST have Al or Josh on the roster in 2 seasons. I am perfect comfortable with neither being on the roster. A bottom tier playoff team is worse than a lottery team, because majority of the times you’re left with no cap flexibility and no impact draft status.

I’d trade Joe for practically nothing. But I’d much rather trade Joe for Marshon, a 1st rounder or 2, and a couple bums (yes you, Farmar).

Complain about Joe and then when it’s time to move him still complain. Bottom line is that the core we have had the last few years has not worked. With Joe having the highest contract in the league we are not going to get cap room and a superstar player. That’s just the pot Rick sind has put us in

Trade Joe for expiring contracts this season and amnesty Marvin next season if you they cant trade him before then. The Hawks would have major caps space after next season. They could resign Josh and sign Dwight. Trade Horford for a top wing player (or PG if Teague is not in the future plans). I can see Ferry taking a step backwards this season and making several steps forward next season and beyond.

Are you all forgetting the point here?! I would give Joe away for nothing…That would give the Hawks a huge trade exception that would be really valuable, plus it would give a lot of salary cap flexibility moving forward… A 20 million trade exception if the Nets just absorbed JJ would allow us to pair the exception with Josh Smith and trade for 2 quality players or one big superstar…like a Dwight Howard. I am not suggesting that he’s the best option, but if you sent Smith & the exception to the Lakers for Bynum to place next to Hortford now you are talking… or Exception + Smith to Chicago for Noah & Deng would make this team a lot of fun… Noah, Hortford, Williams, Deng, & Teague is pretty athletic line-up… Or Smith + exception to Utah for Al Jefferson would be a nice little piece too.

I like Joe, I love the hawks, but that’s because I am a fan. But the bottom line is that Joe is not getting it done, so just because we move Joe does not mean we can not compete next year. We still have talent. Besides Joe averaged less than 18 points this past season, I am sure we can find somebody to do that for less than the bank.

Buddy Grizzard

June 30th, 2012

“Then they’ll go to free agency next year with 10 million under the cap, and hope to lure who? Dwight Howard to ATL?”

Yep, you got it. If Dwight and Josh reach next offseason as unrestricted free agents, they will be in position to assemble a team in the same way Bosh, LeBron and Wade did. Josh and Dwight can decide to take sub-max contracts to leave enough room under the cap to sign additional players (as the Heat’s stars did with Haslem).

At that point, if Orlando hasn’t received anything in trade for Dwight, a sign-and trade scenario where they receive Horford would be a dream scenario for them. Getting a former 3rd team All-NBA center instead of nothing sounds like a good deal, right? So we make them take Marvin in the deal.

Marvin’s 8 mil plus Horford’s 12 mil = a max salary. On top of that, remember the 10 million dollars you mentioned? The Hawks have that left over to sign another star player.

Josh for Kevin Martin straight up? Are people crazy? That would be a stupid, monumentally poor trade. Josh and Marvin for KMart and Scola does nothing for me either.

Can’t just dump JJ’s salary. That guy is an All Star, not a Rashard Lewis. If the Nets could do some S/T’s Lopez and Humphries, or even Gerald Wallace, to go with the Farmars, Morrows, and Marshon Brooks types.

Could I live with trading JJ for Lopez, Humphries and Brooks? Yeh, I’d be up on that deal, especially if your losing Josh on the other end in a Houston deal.

And did anybody see Josh play this season? The guy was a beast. You don’t just give dedicated, hard working, uber talented guys like that away either. Better be getting Martin, Scola, and some young pieces for him. Better yet, get Lowry in there somewhere. Teague and Lowry at the Point would be stout.

Lets look at our team yall.
There is a chance that Willie Green will be back!
And we’ll have Jenkins as the other 2 guard.
At the point barring a trade,Kirk will back up JT0.
Up front it will be either Al,Josh, and Zsa Zsa along with a new small forward..Who?
Off da bench will be da rook from Va.
I hope that we get a center like lopez and a shooter like lynch from jersey..
But do you think that they will give up Lynch? Would you?
I think that da nets will make Ferry back down on his asking for lynch and we will then force da nets hand in taking marvin with jj in the deal…
And get a 2nd round pick of the guy they got late in this years draft..
Ferry says nothing about keeping this team in the playoffs this upcoming year..

Rebuilding in this town? Are like curse words around here..And he is not gonna come out and say it but if we start to jettison jj and either josh or al then i agree with northcyde and this will be a rebuilding project with the likes of one Billy Knight..

Get more cap space and younger players and develope them over the next 2 years..
