Atlanta Hawks: Joe Johnson included in Hawks trade talk

Hawks guard Joe Johnson is included among several trade possibilities being discussed by the team but no deals are imminent, according to a person familiar with the talks.

New Hawks GM Danny Ferry is focused on the trade market as he seeks to re-tool the roster. Johnson is owed $90 million over the next four years and trading him could provide the Hawks salary-cap relief and far greater flexibility for the future.

The Hawks have received calls from teams interested in forward Josh Smith but Ferry so far has considered the price to be too high, according to a person with knowledge of the talks. The person said the Lakers and Magic are among the teams who’ve inquired about Smith.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, who first reported the Johnson trade talks, the Nets are looking to pair Johnson with point guard Deron Williams. Williams will be an unrestricted free agent after midnight and Brooklyn is making an effort to entice him to re-sign.

The Hawks still haven’t said if they plan to extend a qualifying offer to forward Ivan Johnson before the midnight deadline. The Hawks were in favor of extending the offer before Ferry’s hire and spent Saturday deliberating the decision with Ferry’s input. If the Hawks don’t extend the offer of about $970,000 for one year, Johnson will become an unrestricted free agent.

Update: The deadline passed with no word from Hawks officials on whether they extended the qualifying offer to Johnson.

This could work. Hawks would need to get Marshon Brooks and Brook Lopez back in return. That would give us a scorer on the wing and a big to pair with horford. Then comes what to do with Josh. Assuming you get a guy like Lopez, no need to trade Josh for Gasol.

“Jimmer is rapidly becoming the next Salim Stoudamire.”

Salim was a second round pick. A better comparison for Jimmer would be Adam Morrison.

“But if Childress gets amnestied in Phoenix, anybody think the Hawks might look at him for that wing defender/potential starter at small forward here?”

Childress would never consider playing for the Hawks again after they made him go all the way to Greece to get paid.

The nets have no one i want for us. Marshon Brooks is young and isnt starter yet. Brook Lopez is accident prone. Id rather have joe and get an amazing bench

The Nets really dont have many assets to trade. I doubt they want to move Brook lopez because they still want to use him to get Dwight though. Other than Lopez, there is Marshon Brooks, Anthony Morrow and expring contract of Johan Petro they could get. Maybe get Gerald Green in a S&T, not sure that is a legal trade though.

him for whatever and get some cap flexability and move forward with this franchise

I don’t even like Lopez’s game. But if the Hawks can get Lopez and Brooks for Joe Johnson, you HAVE to take that deal. Even if Lopez is turn around and traded again (Lopez and Al to Orlando for D12?). Just the fact that you’re out from under Joe’s contract and the flexibility it gives you.

This summer we’ve already heard more trade rumors in a week of Ferry than we heard in the last two seasons with Sund.

News flash for people. Lopez is a restricted FA right now. So any trade involving him would have to be a sign and trade. LOL . . surely the Hawks wouldn’t be able to secure him for just the 4 mill QO + add Morrow and Brooks.

Nets only have 17 mill on the books as it is . . . so something else will have to be added to this.

Strange that a story like this drops late on a Saturday night.

I kinda agree with glw. But come on trading joe to a team that could barely win? If the nets can barely win who can they give us that can help us get over the top? Nothing. This happens to be the worst team to be in trade talks with. Next to the bobcats.

Hope a deal is struck to free us up and let Joe get a big time opportunity on the nyc stage. He’s done a great job for us, but its time to move on to a new chapter. Lopez and brooks would help this teams needs greatly.

LMAO @ Ra’Mon.

If this were the other way around, you’d be crying to the heavens about a Lopez + Brooks swap for Josh Smith.

That is a garbage trade for JJ, if it goes down. Ferry has to get something better than that . . surely.

Hmmm. Makes the talk of Josh Smith to Houston for Kevin Martin that much more interesting. Although I wouldnt do the trade strait up. But now I see where the rumors are coming from. I say we sign Lou Williams from Philly and bring him back home to run point. As for the Nets, all they would be doing is helping us clear cap space. But the free agent list sucks.

I am not in favor of trading off any of “the core” for someone’s garbage. Give us back a player(s) who can effectively replace the production that we’re losing. You’d never see me propose a trade for Josh Smith involving Brooke Lopez.

If JJ is to be traded, Ferry has to flip this for something significant. First, we get a story about Levenson giving Ferry permission to go into the Luxury Tax if need be. Now we get this story? Something doesn’t add up.

If Deron and Gerald Wallace resigns, Joe goes to the Nets and they sign Dwight next year then I can’t see them having enough cap space to add Josh. Heck, they may not have enough space for Dwight depending on how much they resign Wallace and Lopez for.

And put me on the list of people who don’t want to see a Kevin Martin for Josh Smith trade either.

Be creative Ferry. Don’t completely blow this thing up. Flip one of “the Core” for a comparable player that can possibly help this team.

If we could get lopez and brooks that would be insane. If we could then trade josh for a scoreing three it would be great. Life without iso joe could be near. I am a fan of joes game but he is a complete no show in the playoffs and i think he may be the cancer of the team not josh.

Deron and Joe means no money to sign Dwight as a free agent. Nets would have to feel good about trading for Dwight, or else they think he has other ideas in mind.

Please don’t tease me by making me think that Joe could be gone. That would be a dream come true for me.

It was one of the worst signings ever by the Hawks when they didn’t sign and trade him when they had the chance. Now the Hawks are tied down with all that money owed to Johnson.

Johnson and Smith are selfish players and is a detrement to the team, especially when there are two on the court at the same time.

Moving Johnson and keeping Smith would work out great, providing there is another SG that could be had for less money.

Pleasssssssssssse make the Johnson trade happen.

Being out from under the worst contract in professional sports and opening the possibility of keeping Josh long term is something significant.

As I wrote in March:
