Update: The Hawks selected Vanderbilt junior guard John Jenkins with the No. 23 overall pick. The Hawks had two workout sessions at Philips Arena with Jenkins, who was the top perimeter shooter in NCAA Division I last season.
Update: The Hawks selected Virginia forward Mike Scott with the No. 43 overall pick.
There has seemed to be a subtle shift in comments by Hawks folks since Danny Ferry came on board.
Before there was lots of talk about possibly selecting a player who could join the rotation right away. Now there seemed to be more of a focus on drafting the best talent, regardless of that player’s immediate readiness.
“The ‘best player’ scenario probably fits us the best right now,” Hawks assistant manager Dave Pendergraft said.
That’s not to suggest that the Hawks weren’t considering a long-term prospect before (and, really, most of the players available late in the first round fit that bill). It’s just that Ferry and co-owner Bruce Levenson both have stressed long-term player development and so it follows that’s the organization’s message.
Ferry was still getting his legs when he talked to media Monday and so didn’t have a lot to say about his draft strategy. The team’s PR staff hasn’t made him available for interviews since then. Ferry did talk to the team’s Web site today and addressed the possibility of making a trade.
“Will something happen? I’m not sure that it will, and we will probably be picking 23,” Ferry said. “There is still a long time before we have to pick so we’ll see what happens.”
Ferry said there is a lot of trade talk centered on draft picks in general but said: “We are not going to make a trade just to make a trade.”
“We’ll be a part of some of those talks,” Ferry said. “Maybe we can add a piece or do something.”
Both Pendergraft and Larry Drew said there haven’t been any issues with Ferry joining the staff so late in the process.
“He’s been following all of the draft stuff and he knows these guys really well,” Drew said. “Our format in which we do things, it’s been pretty much the same that it’s been. These guys that have been at the forefront of the draft, Rick [Sund], Dave, our scouts–it’s been, to me, a very smooth transition thus far. Everybody is giving their opinions and thoughts and everyone is trying obviously to find the best player available for us at that pick.”

Making the playoffs only requires going slightly over .500 like the Sixers did this year. Wall-Beal-Ariza-Nene-Okafor is a solid defensive lineup with enough scoring. They need some veteran free agents in the back court but they will be a pretty good team.

So our Board is supposedly:
Royce White – gone
Jared Sullinger
Adam Nicholson
Evan Fournier
Tony Wroten
It will be interesting to see who is left at 23.
ESPN radio said Marquis Teague may be the long term steal of the draft – because you can’t teach quickness, and he’s got that in abundance – and the NBA is thriving on quickness right now.
And they said Meyers Leonard may be the biggest bust – low BB IQ.
We’ll see I guess.

They needed a center and they got a guy who slid pretty far, so it makes sense for the Cavs. Those are a couple of high second round picks, though, and in a deep draft those can be like a late first-rounder without the guaranteed contract.

NBADraft.net:
Jenkins falls into the category of shooting specialist who lags behind in the athleticism department … Jenkins is not a particularly quick, fast or explosive player at all … He struggles off the dribble to create much offense for himself because he simply doesn’t have the quickness to be more than a sporadic slasher to the rim … Doesn’t have many moves when handling the ball, and only does handle the ball when a jumper is simply out of the question … Off the dribble, especially when going left, Jenkins is almost exclusively looking for a mid-range pull-up … Teams will likely guard him very tight and look to make him a slasher until he shows more versatility putting the ball on the floor … Should look to develop a floater, especially with his touch, to give him a high percentage shot for when he goes amongst the trees to finish … Doesn’t pass the ball much … Will likely struggle on the defensive end, where his lack of quickness will probably be evident even with his solid fundamentals … Wont get many steals, and will need to be masked by other good team defenders to be most effective … Does not play above the rim … Not going to be as much of a factor in a up-tempo scheme as he is in a structured offense that can have sets to get him shots …

after considering i think the hawks made a good choice. if you have someone that is a flat out shooter you are a valuable asset. john jenkins is underrated for his athleticism and is just a heady player. he isnt a selfish shooter he will knock down shots at 3 routinely and wont need to force it.

Me too. As much ish as I have talked about Wroten, at least he has NBA level athleticism. Maybe his jumper can be fixed. Maybe he can improve his handle and cut down on his turnovers. Wroten could be a marginal NBA player for the next 15 years. Jenkins will NEVER be an NBA-level athlete.

This is just a mindbogglingly bad pick. You have PJ3 and Wroten, Jr., two guys with tremendous upside, available, and you pick someone who projects as a 6th man, at best. What do you have to lose with the 23rd pick? Swing for the fences. Don’t try to lay down a sacrifice bunt.

I like this pick for the following reasons:
Danny Ferry has committed to the core and said the team is good enough to contend NOW. I agree.
Jenkins knows what a good shot looks like SO that means Josh Smith won’t be lurking around the perimeter trying to get a shot because Joe, Jeff and John Jenkins will be there.
Finally, it looks like there may be a vacancy at power forward unless Marvin is bench bound. By the way, I want the Hawks to get a penetrating three or combo forward (Al Thornton maybe)

Yeah, how’s that new Hawks GM Danny Ferry lookin’ right [about] now – not too good, huh? That idiot (Ferry) doesn’t know how to assemble a team. Look at his track record with the Cavs. Over 90% of the credit should go LBJ for those (winning) Cavs teams during the ’00’s (2,000’s). Another freakin’ jump shooter. (SMH)
I should’ve known. After all, John Jenkins’ first and last name does start with the letter “J.”
Now the Hawks have or recently had Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Al Joel Horford, Kirk James Hinrich, John Jenkins, Jamal Crawford, Jordan Crawford, Josh Childress, Jason Collier, Jeremy Richardson, Jon Barry, Joe Smith, Josh Powell, etc.
Please feel free to add to the “J” list. (smh)

Jenkins is one the best pure technique shooters out there. He’s also got a great work ethic and is a great team player — a real character guy. He doesn’t do well creating his own shot and needs to work on his defense but give him a step and he’s deadly. With salary cap issues looming, guys like Heinrich aren’t going to be around for the long term and Jenkins is an upgrade to Pargo.

Mike Huguenin’s (Yahoo) Analysis: You never can have enough perimeter shooters, and Jenkins is the best pure shooter in this draft. His shooting stroke should be filmed and shown to every young player in the nation. He has great range and is money from the line. His defense and ball-handling are concerns, but, man, he can shoot.

Perry Jones is a top 10 talent. Regardless of how you feel about him….TALENT wins championships. Stockpile talent and worry about the rest later.
Ferry has no excuse choosing John Jenkins over Perry Jones III ESPECIALLY with the prospect of losing Josh Smith via trade or free agency and having Marvin Williams eat up SF minutes with minimal production.
This draft was disastrous. John Jenkins is not even going to play because Joe Johnson still averages a high amount of minutes and he should because we are paying that fool $21 mill

Yeah and Jamal Crawford was also pure scorer who had already been in the NBA nine years before coming to the Hawks and had also scored 50+ points in game for three different NBA teams (CHI, NYK and GSW). Jamal Crawford had an NBA “track record” with respect to scoring and shooting while Jenkins is an unproven “talent” at the NBA level.

From MC’s blog;
Jenkins will have to prove he can do enough other things well enough to help offensively once defenders crowd his jump shot–presumably John Hollinger’s draft rater doesn’t like Jenkins (Insider) because of concerns about his ability to do so. His assist rate ranks last among DraftExpress.com’s top shooting guard prospects and his free-throw rate wasn’t much better.
The more pressing questions regarding Jenkins are his potential as a defender because he’s not particularly quick or athletic..

“There’s really no case you can make that is John Jenkins > Perry Jones III.”
You could say that about approximately 20 players that were available when the Hawks picked.
Here’s what happened. Ferry’s first year at Cleveland they had no first round pick. By the time Ferry took Shannon Brown with the 25th pick, he had his own people in place and a mandate to win a championship. This time, Ferry walks into the situation a couple of days before the draft and the support staff is Sund, LD, Pendergraph, all people who have been here and have only Teague to show for all their drafts. Ferry goes with the consensus in the room. I’m not trying to shift blame off Ferry. THIS IS ALL ON FERRY. I’m just saying, he hasn’t made a single hire for this organization yet.

I really like Jenkins to benefit the Hawks this year off the bench as a shooter. It’s a nice option off a pass to be able to kick to a guy with a shot like that. It’s not like he’s going to be handling the ball often, he’s going to be a sniper.
I just would have liked to have a big center that could grab boards and be more than 6 fouls too.

Mark Bradley’s take;
Instead the Hawks settled for making a fairly safe Round 1 pick: John Jenkins of Vanderbilt. He’s a great shooter, which isn’t the same as being a great player. Given time, Jenkins could become the new Jamal Crawford – an off-the-bench scorer who can change games. Nobody should be disappointed by this pick. That said …
There was a more tantalizing option available. Perry Jones III of Baylor is the kind of player – long of limb – that former GM Billy Knight made a habit of taking among the draft’s top 10. To have gotten such a talent at No. 23 would have been a risk worth taking. Does Jones always play to his gifts? Obviously not, or else he’d have been gone in the lottery. (There was also a late report of an unsound knee.) But a team that has Smith and Horford might have nursed Jones for a year or so and used him for cover in case Smith leaves – he’s a free agent at next season’s end – or Horford becomes the Hawk who’s traded..

Willie Green, Vlad Rad, Pargo were all knock down shooters…hell even Marvin Williams percentage wise was a knock down shooter.
Get some ballers in here. PERRY JONES III is a baller. Despite all that nonsense he still led his team to the Elite 8. Not only that, he doesn’t have to start or have the ball he can spell Josh or Marvin. Best case he becomes the starting SF after Josh Smith leaves and Marvin expires.

He reminds me of Klay Thompson, the former Washington State shooting guard who had a very good year with Golden State last season. Jenkins averaged 19.9 points and shot 43.9 percent from three-point range as a junior, and 8.7 of his 13.1 field-goal attempts were from long range.

It would be funny if this draft turns out to be one of the better one in years simply because people are already dogging the picks before the day is out. Just because your target wasn’t picked means it was a bad draft, hawks wasn’t in a premium position to get top tier talent. I still think Ferry will shake the roster up somehow, this team need to get in next years lottery which means a down year. The question is can any of you live with that.

Good pick by Hawks at 43, too.
Mike Scott 6′9″, 241, wingspan 6′11″, 23 yrs old, 5th yr senior from a good ACC program. Not a starter, but adds depth, scoring, and rebounding to a team in need of each of those.
Positives (from ESPN):
+ Versatile four
+ Excellent rebounder
+ Can score both inside and outside
+ Nice jumper with some 3-point range
+ High motor
Mike Huguenin’s (Yahoo) Analysis: Scott was one of the best players in the ACC and was the only consistent scorer for the Cavaliers, who made it to the NCAA tournament. Scott is a tough kid who can score in the low post and out to about 15 feet; he also is a good rebounder.

ONly reason the guy slid is because of reports about a knee. The guy has never been injured.
Guys that slide are the perfect picks for PLAYOFF TEAMS. That’s how playoff teams stay playoff teams because their picks are low risk. That’s why the Celtics picked Sullinger and Fab Melo….two sliders.
That’s why OKC took 2 minutes out of 5 to decide that Perry Jones was the guy. You think they scouted Jones at 28?? Not a chance….but they know the guy is a top talent.
Late in the draft you draft the best player available not for needs. That’s why the Hawks are the Hawks because they draft needs instead of best player they can get.

For what it’s worth, Jeff Teague shot a higher 3P% in his final season at Wake than John Jenkins did at Vandy. But I guess there are worse things than drafting a guy in the late first who can hit shots off the bench.
Still, I’d rather actually have someone that can get to the rim (and wants to get to the rim… looking at you Josh). Maybe that’s more of a coaching issue.

Bass? What?

What, a team drafted a guy they didn’t work out?

No way a guy drops like that without good cause. Hawks really had to do the safe pice, Jenkins have a useable skill set. Im happy with the pick, Im just waiting for Ferry to do a complete overhaul of the roster, no one is safe.

Mike Scott actually sounds a little like David West… a tweener with solid offensive and rebounding skills. But plays under the rim (like West).

Post draft trade. What can we get for shopping All Get Real? He had the most trade value before that discombobulated shot in the post caused that freak accident.

As a UVa alum and fan Scott is a mid range monster and an above average post up option. He is a bit small for PF but could find a niche as a nice scoring option off the bench. He carried UVa throughout the season, averaged ~37 minutes a game, and was the complete focus of opposing defenses and still managed to put up a pace adjusted 25 ppg and 11 rpg. This article is a nice picture of what the Hawks are getting. http://www.streakingthelawn.com/2012/2/9/2786101/uva-vs-wf-wake-forest-mike-scott-show-acc-virginia-cavaliers.

No wonder the Hawks didn’t draft PJ3. They didn’t meet his daddy requirements….LOL

Think about the guys that are being brought in here: Brian Butch, Jeremy Hazell, John Jenkins, and Mike Scott. These guys are all shooters. Even Pape Sy has started hitting his 3’s.
Now think about the Josh for Gasol trade (another shooter).
Obviously this is LD’s model. Ferry needs to decide what he wants to see on the court.

Astro,
“Jenkins will have more 3FGs than PJ3 will have rebounds next season.”
Maybe but I’m more interested who will have a better career. Hawks as assemble will probably not win the Championship next season so why know choose a guy that could have All-Star talent instead of a spot up shooter that are a dime a dozen.

Everybody in the Hawks scouting department needs to be fired right away for their performance in this years draft.
Everybody in the Hawks organization who participated in the draft needs to be fired right away for their performance in this years draft.
They don’t deserve a F they deserve a G.
Their is a real disconnect with the organization and the fan base right now. The fan base wants to win a championship but the organization wants to tread water.
Ratings for NBA basketball is always high in the Atlanta metro area but attendance at Hawks games are low. I wonder why? Maybe horrible draft picks after draft picks have something to do with it.
If you want the consumer to buy your product you have to give the consumer what he wants.

Mr Ferry`s picks showed a real San Antone philosophy !
***** Shooters ***** or as I prefer to say … shot-makers.
I happen to know that S.A. had scouted Scott extensively.
They were [wishful thinking] hoping he would fall to them.
David West was a good comparison offensively;
but West used to be a good shot-blocker.
-not any more- … Scott, not a shot blkr, never was.
Think Bonner with [dark complexion]
* Mike Scott:
* I just watched a workout video and dad-gum this kid can shoot.
He obviously can score, good scorer in a great league.
But he can really shoot with a beautiful smooth / fluid stroke.
D.F. wasn`t kidding when he said he was looking for guys who could shoot.
It is nice to have a plan / a philosophy / a direction.
It bugs me that I knew who this kid was but knew nothing about him.
Confound it !

For all you so called Hawks fan the only real move we need to make is get rid of Joe Johnson ??? he is overpaid and is killing our salary cap you pay him all that money for him to choke again in the playoffs the trade that needs to happen is JJ, Marvin williams ,Zaza and a draft pick for Dwight Howard, then you pick up a sg and you would have the best line up in the NBA with Dwight at center Al at pf, Josh at sf, Teague at pg and sg is who you get and you have money to get some better bench players lets not forget that Dwight and Josh are both from Atlanta, what better way to bring a championship to ATL than home grown talent.
