Atlanta Hawks: Hawks said to pursue Josh Smith for Pau Gasol trade

According to Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times, the Hawks have tired to trade forward Josh Smith for Lakers forward Pau Gasol.

Bresnahan tweeted that no deal is imminent. And a big caveat is that his report says the Hawks first expressed interest in Gasol after Los Angeles was eliminated from the playoffs by the Thunder, back when Rick Sund was still Hawks GM.

The Hawks have since hired GM Danny Ferry, who says he’s focused on building long term. Gasol turns 32 next week and is owed more than $38 million over the next two seasons.

Also, Bresnahan and ESPN’s Chad Ford reported the Lakers are open to trading Gasol for a high lottery pick and players, a price the Hawks can’t match.

The Rockets, who have been accumulating draft picks, could meet the Lakers’ price. Houston already tried to trade for Gasol as part of the infamous Chris Paul deal that was eventually nixed by NBA commissioner David Stern.

Update: Ford now says the Rockets aren’t pursuing Gasol.

Smith, who can become an unrestricted free agent next summer, first told the Hawks he wanted to be traded after last season and reiterated that desire prior to this season’s deadline. Smith wants to join a franchise he feels is more committed to winning and play in a market with better fan support.

“Josh and Marvin for Gasol is a terrible move? I don’t think so. It may be a lateral move, but it would give this team a totally different makeup”

Not to mention that since we are unlikely to be able to move Joe, let’s see just what he could do in tandem with a true low post threat. I’ll say it would open things up for him to catch-and-shoot much more, which is more his strength these days.

We would miss Josh’s rim protection some, no doubt”

Josh’s rim protection is declining already because he’s standing around on the perimeter….not a dramatic dropoff, but still a dropoff.

You think Ferry sees Pau as our Duncan? Pau matches up with Bosh IMO and his offense is very usable.
2 hiccups here…..we can’t trade the draft pick, if the CBA still limits that, and of they take Marvin? I’m doing it/

Dumbest move in history of the Hawks.

Josh 26years 13mill

Paul 32years 18mill

your trading Josh for a guy who have no motivation at all, if Kobe couldn’t get this guy going in playoffs what you think he will do here with no true leader, JUST DAM

From espn.com;

San Antonio, which doesn’t pick until No. 59 in the second round, as well as Atlanta, which does have a first-round pick at No. 23, also made a number of calls to Donovan and Florida in the hope that each team could move up to land Beal..

Hawks would have to get #2 pick to make it happen.

I hear ya BD, but if it moves Marvin……you cannot deny moving that 8.2M off our books….so you are getting Pau for 11M instead of 19M.

One hesitation is that whoever leaves the Lakers usually isn’t better after leaving the Lakers.

Smooove wants to be traded to a team that wins, because he can’t get this team to win. That might could happen if he gets traded to a winning team that isn’t counting on Smooove as a starter, but rather as a bench player. Oh, he also wants to be traded to a team where the fans don’t call him out for being a selfish loser. Good luck with that Smooove.

I would trade Smooove for a 2nd round draft pick.

Rod,

Bosh is better than Josh and Gasol, and Lebron must be included in their front line. Lebron is who makes them intimidating..

If only Marvin could be intimidating

I dont think it would as bad of a move as some are making it on here. I still think Houston will come calling with an offer once they cant get Dwright. Having a true low post scorer would really help this offense. I think Paul could easily put up 20 and 10 here. He put up 17 and 10 last year although he wasnt involved as much in the offense. He is also a great passer and wont try to do things he isnt capable of. I doubt the trade happens but I wouldnt be mad if it did.

Josh for Rudy

Josh #23 for Tyreke and #5

These are trade that make this team better, not no Gasol.

Getting Pau makes a ton of sense, you fools! It allows Al to move to the 4 spot, his natural position, and it gives the Hawks a legit low-post scorer… something ATL hasn’t had since forever. Think about Pau and Al with Zaza coming off the bench and allowing Pau to move to the 4, too. Give it a year or two and, if it doesn’t work, blow it all up in two years and start completely over again.

Gasol is a bust? Two rings, multiple all star appearances and he is a busst? I wish the Hawks had this type of but on the team instead of a guy like Marvin..

The Hawks want Beal? I guess they are really trying to shake up this team. I like Beal but what do we have that would make the Bobcats give up that second pick?

“Ding!!!!! It’s a lateral move. You may gain a little offensively, but you lose a lot defensively, and you lose the emotional leader of your team.” – Rod from CP

You are correct, Rod, but unless Josh has a change of heart, it looks like we lose him after this year anyway. If you are losing your best player, and can salvage a lateral move, then you have mitigated the loss as well as possible.

If Josh were to tell Ferry he wanted to stay, then OF COURSE you wouldn’t do this.

Are you people out of your minds? We need to trade Josh Smith for Pau Gasol right now!!! Teague and Joe in the backcourt plus Horford and Gasol in the frontcourt makes us a legit contender to at least make the ECF next year. Plus, if we can somehow bring a 3rd team into the deal, Cleveland?, we can rid ourselves of Marvin Williams contract. Then, Gerald Wallace to ATL baby!!!

I knew that, once Danny Ferry was hired as the new GM, the Hawks would look to “move” Josh Smith. I believe most NBA hard-nosed, traditional, fundamentalist, basketball purists/disciplinarians (and executives) don’t (necessarily) care for Josh Smith’s antics and attitude (e.g., sulking, pouting, complaining, obstinance, defiance, etc.) and Hawks GM Danny Ferry comes from “that group” of purists/disciplinarians/fundamentalists.

Danny Ferry is going to be the Hawks GM that will make the “tough, hard-nose(d) decisions.” GM Ferry will move a good player with some attitude issues like Josh Smith but will look to keep an overrated, mediocre player like Kirk Hinrich. Watch what I’m sayin’. GM Danny Ferry is nothin’ but an “old school (basketball) conservative” in a (relatively) young man’s body. Expect a (conservative) culture change in the Hawks (franchise) organization.

High-Sider,

Ferry came from San Antonio, who had NO problem getting Stephen Jackson who has CERTAINLY had “attitude issues” in the past.

Is R.C. Buford black? Nope.

What evidence do you have to make such an accusation?

I think you have an anti-white agenda. Like you, I’m calling it like I see it. That’s what it looks like from here, FYI. Perhaps that’s not your intention, but that’s certainly how you come across.

The day that will live in infamy for a long time:

“The Atlanta Hawks resign Joe Johnson to a Max deal”. You are forced to lose your best player on the team because your third best player on the team makes the most money in the league and has utterly put the shackles on any chance at a championship for the next 5 – 10 years.

That includes the remainder of Joe’s contract and the time it will take you to rebuild. What a bunch of Grade-A idiots.
