Atlanta Hawks: Prospect focus: Baylor’s Quincy Miller

Baylor forward Quincy Miller is the highest-rated draft prospect who’s scheduled to work out for the Hawks, according to DraftExpress.com. He’d probably be ranked higher if not for the torn left ACL he suffered in December 2010.

David Aldridge reports the knee is a major concern for teams. He quoted an anonymous Central Division executive as saying: “He needs to spend these couple of months actually working out and rehabbing, and he never did it. He clearly never rehabbed. The atrophy in his leg was incredible. If he gets his leg strength back, he’s Durant-like in his ability to get a shot off. He’s 6-10 and he can snap his shot off with no trouble.”

The Hawks’ medical and basketball people have yet to meet to scrutinize Miller’s medical history in detail. But Miller was said to be moving better during his workout over the weekend than he did during his one season at Baylor.

The Hawks always covet versatile players and they aren’t sure if Miller could play power forward in addition to small forward. Hawks assistant GM Dave Pendergraft:

“That’s a good question. It’s kind of like Rashard Lewis with the Sonics. You didn’t know if he was a three or a four. A lot of that will be answered with the maturation of [Miller's] body. How strong can he get? How quickly can he get strong? And then can his frame carry weight? I would say right now he has to be a three because at the four he would get pushed around like a chess piece. So right now he’d have to keep him as much on the perimeter as much as he can. Now in time can he [get stronger]? Rashard Lewis, I think the most he ever weighed was 238, maybe. But he could bench 320 pounds. He’s an unbelievably strong guy. Now, can Quincy do that some day? Maybe. When you look at ‘Q,’ you look at the upside. How good can he be? And he does have a lot of upside. But right now I would classify him as a 3-4. Maybe somewhere down the line he could be a 4-3. But Rashard Lewis would be the case in point.”

Miller said he’s already gained significant weight since Baylor’s season ended.

“Once I put on a little more muscle I can play four,” he said. “I weigh 220 right now. I want to get up to 235, 240 almost. Somewhere around there.”

Miller said the added weight hasn’t affected his mobility. Hawks coach Larry Drew wonders if there could be diminishing returns:

“I don’t know what a bigger frame will do for him. Will it take anything away from him? Certainly he is going to have to get stronger moving to this next level and playing the position he plays. He certainly has to get stronger. From what I’ve seen of him, his wiry frame, that’s kind of who he is. You can really see the potential of this kid. He’s a good mid-range shooter, very skilled around the basket and he has length. He handles the ball good enough. He’s getting better at it. He’s a talented guy.”

Guys, would you rather have Willie Green come back, or Brandon Roy on the bench? Roy is playing in JC’s tournament. That’s a great time to see how he’s moving and more importantly, how he is recovering between games. I would much rather have Roy at the end of my bench for a season or two, than Green, Pargo, or any one else for the vet minimum.

Ra’mon, obviously the answer is health dependent. I don’t want to see another T-Mac situation… Roy can’t play back-to-back games or can’t go in half of the other games because of health issues. It is a no brainer if he has reasonable health, but he would not have left Portland if he had reasonable health.

From earlier today:

‘`I think they have to look at it in the opposite way.
Is he quick enough to defend 3s”

Most people never consider the defensive side of the ball.

On offense:
It does not matter if he`s a [3] or a [4].
I`ve said many, many times – the real question;
is he a Baketball Player ?

A walk down memory lane. From MC’s blog on April 19, 2010. Some interesting stuff from our owner, Michael Gearon Jr.

Talked to ASG’s Michael Gearon Jr for a playoffs preview story last week. Couldn’t get everything in, so here are some excerpts from the interview:

On the season:

“It is good. I’ve been around the franchise since I was a kid. For us, when we came in here it was all about trying to build a team through the draft with a CORE group of guys, a young team. The goal we’ve had is get better every year. The goal this year is to move up from where we were last year. This is our third year in playoffs, and its’ not about making the playoffs. It’s about going as far as we can as a team.

“We’ve got a bunch of guys that believe in themselves, and when we are playing the right way we are as good as any team in the league. I’ve been waiting for this day since the end of last season, as a fan. Our your guys have matured, they are used to the playoffs.”

On Woody’s performance:

“He’s done a good job. Getting the third seed, 53 wins, each year we keep getting better and better—regular season, he has done a tremendous job. But us a franchise, from the ownership down, we judge ourselves in the playoffs. It’s not just the regular season, its’ winning championships and we feel we have the right CORE here, culturally—coach, GM, players—and that’s what we are trying to do.”.

On leaving Woody’s future up to Rick Sund:

“Any owner that meddles with coaches and players, that’s a mistake.. We have become a franchise that has become a standard for, we are loyal to our coaches, loyal to our GM, loyal to our players. I think loyalty goes both ways. I think (Woody) is the longest tenured coach in the East (tied with Doc Rivers). We brought Joe in here, and we’ve built with a bunch of good young players. I think we are capable of being an elite team, and that is what we have been building for.”

On intentions to bring back J.J.:

“That’s always been the goal. Last summer, we committed to doing it back then. We think Joe likes it here. We like Joe here. We fought hard to get Joe here, as everyone knows. He’s a four-time All-Star. He’s been the face of this franchise and the team has been built around Joe.”.

On his view of the Hawks’ offense:

“I’m not a coach, I’m not a GM, but when you watch our team, when we move the ball, we are pretty good. Because we’ve got a deep team. We don’t have LeBron, we don’t have Kobe, but we’ve got a deep team where any night we’ve got a bunch of guys capable of performing at a high level.

I look at our team kind of like the Boston Celtics of the 80s, when they had Bird, Walton, Ainge, Parrish, McHale–you don’t know on what night which guy is going to get the points. That is when we are at our best. And we’ve got two guys capable of breaking down a defense, Joe and Jamal. Not many teams have that. That is one of our strengths.”.

On players’ support for Woody:

“We stood by him when everyone in the world said, ‘Why are you standing by this coach with 13 wins, 27 wins, 30 wins.’ Woody is a good guy. I think one way you can judge a coach is whether players play hard for you, and these guys play hard for Woody.”

On direction of team:

“It’s not easy to win 53 games, but I think it’s important you understand that as a franchise, we are not slapping each other on the back. We want to be an elite team for many years and we’ve got the CORE to do that because we are one of the youngest good teams in the league. I think it’s interesting that we started a youth movement. Portland did it, Oklahoma did it. Minnesota, Memphis.. Maybe it’s not a good idea to go out and sign Kenyon Martin for $90 million, or trade Andre Miler for Allen Iverson, and realize that doesn’t’ work in Denver. . . . I’m gun-shy of trading for long-term, high-profile veteran, because if you look at the league historically, it’s hard..

“I’m glad we didn’t get impatient. We stayed the course and Woody was supportive of that. Coaches in this league, they lose and they trash the organization, they trash the players. It’s never them. One of the things I have always admired about Mike is when Josh was 18, 19, 20 he never said something about Josh in the paper. Childress, Marvin—he stayed the course. That’s not easy.”

On size of future payroll and using cap exceptions:

“I have no idea. We haven’t made decisions based on payroll. If we had, we wouldn’t have gotten Crawford. We have always been committed to keeping our CORE together. Josh Smith was a restricted free agent. We knew Josh wasn’t going anywhere, but the way the league rules work with restricted free agents it’s a different process. With Joe last summer, we offered the max money we could offer him as a player. Rick is more the one to talk to about the mid-level (exception), but I’ve seen more mistakes with the mid-level than I have smart decisions.

“I love our CORE team, but there are two phases to this. We just finished the first phase. These questions are better asked after the postseason. I don’t know. You and I are sitting here talking today, but if we get swept first round, I might see our guys differently. I love our CORE, but I think what has allowed us to be successful has been flexibility. We turned Shelden Williams into Mike Bibby. That’s a pretty darn good move. We turned Acie Law and Speedy Claxton into Jamal Crawford. I don’t fault anything we have done today. I love Mo. He’s a great guy, he plays his tail off. It’s hard to find guys who do that for four minutes or 40.”.

“Kevin I dont know if thats fair. We could do that for every prospect coming out this year.”

More than fair, and I was in person to see all the hype that came with Baylor. Miller played the role of Marvin in both games.

And I feel the same about Dion Waiters. A lot of build-up, but is he talented enough to be a factor with a starting lineup?

Pick 23 has a lot of twists and turns. You usually end up going for the highest talent left, but that has to include a need for your team.
Does Sullinger, Nicholson, Miller and Green represent a need? I don’t see any of them getting much playing time with our current frontline.
And this whole blog will want to see a lot of the pick, but LD won’t concern himself with a rookie.

I’m going to go on the record of saying, I don’t think JJ has ever really been the problem. I think the problem is the same with Josh. There hasn’t been a coach here who forced the team to move on offense, and have a point guard who was a facilitator to set them up. Look at how Indiana uses Granger. Granger isn’t better than Joe in any regards. But he gets his points a lot easier than Joe does. Put Joe in a system that relies more on backdoor screens, and coming off of off the ball screens, and Joe is as good as most of the scorers in the league (of course not Durant, Kobe, Wade, or Lebron).

i dont think quincy miller or royce white are our solution at #23. both would be nba PFs and we already have josh, al, marvin, ivan. we need a backup PG a backup C and some perimeter scoring. i think we need to make a more sound choice at #23 than another PF that will ultimately not play much. i feel sorry for pendergraft as there really is no1 at #23 that can make much of a difference for us.
id really like to see us imploy the new england patriots draft day tactics and trade our pick and move back. we could get some cash considerations and early 2nd rounder or maybe trade our #23 and a hawk for a solid role player off the bench for us. we should keep our #43 as i think there are 3 key guys that could all contribute immensly. i posted these three names in the last blog but Kostas Papanikolaou is going to be a lefty* andrei kirilenko that can hit 3’s, darius miller can be a thabo sefolosha(good reliable perimeter defender) tyshawn taylor is that new york PG that can get to the lane and will be better in the NBA than college because of spacing.
i dont think its a stretch to take Papanikolaou at #23 because at 21 years old he lead the Olympiacos to a euroleague championship. he has the upside that you like to see for a 1st rounder.

I watched a lot of Baylor and they had jump shot happy guards. Plus their would be times where Miller would come out strong but be subbed out for no reason at all. With Drummond, no way you throw Oriakhi to the side so Drummond gets the minutes. Oriakhi may end up as a better career big man than Drummond, but UConn was a mess this year. They simply should have been better. Losing to Royce White and Iowa State was not a good finish.

I understand where you’re coming from but I if you can get a guy that has top 10 talent at 23 I just dont see how you pass that up…It might take him time to develop but lets be honest here where are the Hawks going this year? Too often this front office doesnt consider the future and thats why they have so many issues now. Imagine the nuclues of good young players this team would have now if they thought about the future rather than trying to win a few more games here and there.. They would have Teague, Jordan Crawford, and Farried right now with a chance to add another young piece withthe 23rd pick this year. I added Farried because he was the guy Pendergraft was really high on last year although they had traded away that pick. Its time to put a little more focus on the future rather than the right now but they wont which is why I wont be shocked if they just let Josh walk, which is why they gave Joe that deal, which is why they gave up so much for Kirk. This team should be in a better position with young players and flexibility but they arent because they wanted to win a few games in the playoffs. If these moves were done with trying to win a ring I would have no problem with it but they did this with trying to get in the second round. Come on man really?

And yea I really like Cunningham but I think he will be gone early in the second. We need more guys who can create off the dribble and get to the line. We just dont have enough of that on this team.

– The Hawks are said to be one team placing calls to improve their draft position. They currently own the No. 23 pick. One GM said the Hawks floated the names of both Josh Smith and Marvin Williams as potential trade chips.

– One issue facing the Hawks, of course, is the status of GM Rick Sund. His contract expires at the end of the month, and his future with the team is unclear, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

– As an aside, the Hawks only have six players under contract. So on top of the draft, they expect to be active in the free-agent market come July. Of the players under contract, Smith and Zaza Pachulia enter the season in the final year of their deals. Also, Williams has a player option next summer.

– Don’t be surprised if the Hawks make a run at former Sixth Man of the Year Jamal Crawford, who spent the past season with the Trail Blazers. Ray Allen (Celtics) and Alonzo Gee (Cavs) are also said to be on their radar.

Thats what we need.. a power forward. We have one of the best in the game in Josh Smith. We have one who wants to be a power forward but is a very weak defender and a weak scorer who was asked to play center but begs to play power forward ( no team play ) in Al Horford. Did some one tell the ASG we need a CENTER.

Al Horford makes over 15 million a year and give us 12 pts a game 8 rbs, argue in the locker room to play another position and is lazy about defense. Did I mention he is injury prone? What the hell are we thinking? I can get a better center for 15 million. Just add 1 or 2 plays

Why would we get rid of Horford when Josh is leaving? We’ll need a power forward, even if it’s not his best position. Josh is way too smart to stay with this pathetic excuse for an ownership group. If he’s not traded, he will walk after the season. Stay tuned. Josh is good as gone. And this lame-ass ownership group will hope in vain that they can coax him to stay. Vain, being the key word in more than one fashion. He’ll be the true pro he is, and not let it become a D12 story, but he’s already got one foot out the door. He’s thinking of greener pastures.

Bill Walton was more than a shell of himself with the Celts.
He also was a more integral part than Pistol;
Pete having a serious knee inj before arthro-scopic surgery
was the norm during his final playing days.

Walton was the 6th man on the 86 Celts
*[the Greatest Team of all time].
Walton had gained wgt and muscle

over the yrs;
perhaps due to giving up the ” hippie counter-culture “.
Walton also had a special chemistry with bird …
`twas almost as if they were of the same mind.
They were perfectly in tune with each others thoughts.
Walton -possibly- the best passing Center of all-time,

I see the “Bring Back Jamal” campaign/theme is developing into an ongoing narrative that’s getting some serious traction [on this blog]. They [the ASG and GM Rick Sund] ought to bring him [Crawford] back to the Hawks. Hawks fans saw what happened to this [Hawks] team in the [2012] playoffs without a serious scoring threat off the bench. Look at this year’s [2012] NBA Finals. Both the Heat and Thunder need another scorer on their respective teams. The Heat have LBJ, D-Wade and C. Bosh, who’s been inconsistent at scoring while the Thunder have Iceberg Slim [Durant], “Westbrick”
[Mr. Unconscious Gunner Extraordinaire] and J. Harden [The Bearded One], who’s also been inconsistent with respect to scoring. “Sixth men” are a valuable commodity in the NBA. If this Hawks [franchise] is smart, it should re-sign Jamal Crawford.

P.S. If Jamal Crawford re-signs with the Hawks, will this be [considered] a “coming home” or [a] “homecoming” for J-Creezy aka @jcrossover aka Crawdaddy aka “The Difference”? I’m just askin’.

If Jamal comes back, look for the Hawks defense to be 2-3 ppg worse than this year. Unless you think Hinrich made that much difference, then it was addition by his subtraction for the D this year that made the numbers better. Jamal couldn’t guard anyone when he was 30. What will 33 look like?

Grandad, [that's] enough with the pro-white, revisionist history. Let’s not disrespect the deceased black [American] slaves especially on Juneteenth [the 19th day of June]. First, the Bulls finished the ‘95-’96 and ‘96-’97 regular seasons with win-loss records of 72-10 [won NBA Finals] and 69-13 [won NBA Finals], respectively, while the Celtics finished the ‘85-’86 regular season with a win-loss record of 67-15 [won NBA Finals]. During the ‘85-’86 regular season, Bill Walton averaged 7.6ppg, 6.8rpg and 2.1apg in 19.3mpg. I would consider [Bill] Walton a solid or decent contributor on that [Celtics] team but he [Walton] was in no way more valuable than Dennis Johnson. Correct me if I’m wrong but I recall [Larry] Bird saying/stating that DJ [Dennis Johnson] was the best player he [Bird] ever played with [on a (basketball) team]. That’s a major compliment coming from Larry “Legend” [Bird] aka “The Hick from French Lick.”
