It is what it is. Philly would have given us as much trouble if not more. We have holes at center, sf, and point. It’s on to the draft and free agency.

Sign Andre Miller or Nash (long shot) and draft Fab Melo. It’s a damn shame the Celts have back to back picks right before us. Fake ass home court advantage continues to hurt us.

Most of KG`s points came off jump shots.
turn around jump shots at that.
He was a 7 ftr with length shooting over Josh.
would have done the same to Al.
When Damp was on him:
KG drove to the hoop;
typically got the foul called and went to the line on a touch foul.
[Joe does the same - end game- no call !]
Whomever is carping about Al not guarding KG;
it makes no difference.
Like LD said the double teams came too slow !
Yes … you guessed it oft`times … Joe was slow !

Still a 7 ftr can shoot over 6-7 josh or 6-8 Al.
Yes these are true measurements.
-exception- Josh has more length than Al !

* Seriously is anyone complaining about defense:
holding Boston to 83 points ?

Lester Conner = good hire by LD.
Makes me wonder who else he would have hired if given free reign ?

The Truth about the Refs…

Welcome to the NBA. That’s how the big boys play. Need a hug?

Real players fight through that nonsense. It’s like holding in football – a keen ref could call it every play. It’s even more true and less often called in the playoffs.

This is why you need tougher player. But don’t be too sad. You actually played a solid series, and the Celtics tried their best to hand it to you at times.

Can Joe maybe speak up about the refs or something besides criticizing his own team and maybe take a fine to get his point across?

We’re paying over $85 Million over the next 4 years to someone with no personality and who underachieves year after year.

Good job ASG!

“Game, set, [and] match [with the throat slash gesture].”

LMFAO. What are you 16? Act like an adult. Or at least try.

Crawford’s +/- numbers are exactly what they are. Dude gives up as much [or more] as he scores. His “value” needs to be more than on one end. Unfortunately his effort on the defensive end was not only unacceptable, but disheartening to his teammates who had to clean up the mess. You’ll never convince me that he was worth having [in the big picture]. But go ahead with your happy little world.

His numbers are his numbers. They cannot be denied, nor can the impression he left as a matador defender. [Hands folded in benediction]

Grandad – LD is the problem.

Last night perfect example Horford was mugged and coach LD say nothing, have that been Doc he would have force refs over to the table to review that call, Boston would have shot 2 free throws plus receive the ball from sideline.

JUST THAT PLAY ALONE CAUSE THE HAWKS THE GAME.

Still our two biggest problems as I see well make that three are Ownership, Joe, and Marvin until we do something about those three in no particular order then I say we can talk about coaching.

LD is the problem…. REALLY?

This was the best these players have EVER PLAYED and LD is the problem…PLEASE.

The problem:

We have 3 players competing against each other and winning is 2nd to being an ALLSTAR.

Josh wants to be an ALLSTAR.
Joe wants to validate his contract.
Al thinks JOSH is an IDIOT and JOE is SOFT.
TEAGUE thinks he is better than all of them and he might be right.

I don’t want another unproven coach…I will stick with LD and just change a player or 2. If you forgot, LD drew up 2 plays at the end… One got a foul call and the 2nd got 2FT…. LD DID HIS JOB, The players didn’t.

In the two years with Jamal Crawford, the Hawks advanced to second round [EC Semifinals] of the playoffs in two consecutive years.

In the very next year without Jamal Crawford, the Hawks were eliminated in the first round [EC Quarterfinals] of the playoffs.

You, Clarification, choose observe +/- [plus/minus] statistics as a gauge/measuring stick to assess a player’s worth/value while I choose to observe wins and losses as a gauge/measuring stick to assess a player’s worth/value.

I know win/loss statistics trump +/- [plus/minus] statistics. [High-fivin', chest-bumpin' and doin' the ol' school prep (street/urban dance)] That should tell you I’m a lot older than 16 [years of age].

Teaguer has come through relatively unscathed on the blog,
after last eve.
he did not deliver what we have come to expect.

Am I down on Teague ?
-no-
Am I somewhat disappointed ?
-yes-

This is why;
we Must bring in Nash !
Two or three reasons:
* Nash = SuperDuperStar
*a Mentor for Jeff [none better]
*a true pg [none better]
*dynamic combo Nash & Teaguer
(Nash defends the weaker guard / Jeff defends the quicker guard)
*Teaguer plays the [1] Big min when Nash rests !

** okay so that was five **

Nash & Gortat led the League in assts by teamates;
-two player- (passer + finisher combination) over 300

Imagine Nash -&- Al pick & Roll
-same-
Nash -&- Josh pick and roll
-plus-
Atl = the *’`Lob Factory`’* … (I`m sorry, I couldn`t resist)

Not to mention what he would do for Zaza.

Also and this is a Big Also;
He [Nash] would assume leadership and have the
currency to back it up, along with the high estimation from peers,
his command would be immediate.
Therefore Josh would become the greatest benefactor.
Josh would have no choce but to embrace Nash and to re-up with Atl
due his career ascendancy !

More than any stat, I use my eyes. Jamal’s defense will NEVER pass anyone’s “eye test”. NEVER!

And about this: [High-fivin', chest-bumpin' and doin' the ol' school prep (street/urban dance)] That should tell you I’m a lot older than 16 [years of age].

Tells me nothing. Rusty pulls up some names from the early 50s and tries to claim he’s in his seventies. Acts like he’s a teenager. Your ever present “need” to win an unwinnable argument, and your childishness in your “celebration” points to an immature person. I’m not trying to call names, but to let you know how you are coming across. There are good reasons to think you might be younger than most on the blog.

It’s not the references, but the actions that seem that way. FYI.

Terrible, terrible, terrible team, owners, and players. Year after year these delusional owners and gm continue to think this core group of players has the tools to go to bring Atlanta a championship. It is pathetic beyond words, and I definately agree with the guy who said he wishes the national media would shine a light onto just how bad ASG is as an ownership group. The have wasted high first round draft picks on Sheldon Williams, Marvin Williams, and Josh Chilldress. They gave Joe Johnson a Max contract of 6 years and 120 million dollars, yes Lebron James and Kobe Bryant type money for Joe “dissapears in the playoffs” Johnson. Sadly, they messed up for a 2nd time signing Marvin Williams to a ludicrous 5 year/ 35 million deal to essentially be a sixth man who averages 10 points and 5 rebounds, not pathetic, but hardly worth that type of money for a guy as inconsistent, and who no-shows against quality teams as much as Marvin does. Then they trade a young, talented guard Jordan Crawford and a 1st round pick for Kirk Hinrich. Since we drafted Crawford with our 1st round pick that year, they essentially gave Washington 2 first round picks for Kirk Hinrich. Again, Hinrich is not terrible, he is mediocre….and no other sane organization would have even given Washington 1 first round pick, let alone 2. Then they let Jamal walk for pennies, and decide to fill the entire bench with over the hill guys with bad knees like T-Mac, Dampier, and Stackhouse. Then they have the gall to tell fans they are serious about competing??? Really?? Me and my friends have boycotted Phillips, despite the fact we are HUGE Hawks fans. We refuse to EVER support with ONE DIME, ASG or Rick Sund. They both should be drenched in shame and embarrasment for what they have done to the city of Atlanta. Between me and my 4 friends, they probably lost about 2 thousand dollars from the 5 of us that we would have normally spent, and not to mention the bad press I tell every person I meet who asks about the Hawks….Sad day Atlanta

You actually contradict the hell out of yourself. With Jamal Crawford, the Hawks finished their 2011 postseason record at 6-6 [0.500] and without Jamal Crawford, the Hawks finished their 2012 postseason record at 2-4 [0.333].

Which postseason record is better [out of the playoff runs of 2011 and 2012]? How are/were the Hawks better [this postseason] without Jamal Crawford? With Jamal Crawford, the Hawks advanced to the EC Semifinals in 2011; without Jamal Crawford, the Hawks failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs in 2012.

Possibly the most intelligently retarded Pro-Jamal argument I’ve ever read. Yes, I meant exactly that.

It’s well written, but…wow…so wrongly presented.

Comparing last season’s postseason results to this season’s results in such a narrow scope is plain folly.

First of all, we did beat Orlando with Jamal’s help. We lost to Chicago in part because of Jamal, and there were really one major reason why we were even competitive in the second series, and that was Jeff Teague, though Josh had some good games, and so did Joe.

Jamal stunk on defense the entire time, and stunk all the way around against Chicago, where he got shut down in all but one game.

Then there’s the next stage of the argument – comparing this team at near full health (Kirk was the only key guy out in the playoffs, and that was for the second series, not the first) last season to the team THIS season with an ailing Josh Smith (knee) and a less than 100% Al who had missed nearly all of the season and only JUST come back, is silly. When I mean less than 100%, I’m not just talking full health, I’m talking about being in sync with one’s teammates, which Horford wasn’t, all the time. As if the Hawks know how to stay in sync.

However, with Jamal, there’s no way the defensive effort the Hawks put up (except in the blowout game) would have been possible with Jamal out there. No way, now how.

Lastly, we’re talking about a matchup with the Celtics. Not the sorry-arse Magic.

Grandad ,

Hate to disagree with you, but I must.

Mike Gearon is the Hawks’ #1 problem. It always starts at the top. The man is a born fool when it comes to NBA basketball. If not for him, there would be no Rick Sund, and let’s remember – Sund is in a “yes man” role here with the Hawks. He’s retired on duty. Collecting a paycheck and saying “yessir.”

Hell, Sund is a dumb looking bystander. Is he even still on this side of the grave? Haven’t heard a word from him and not sure the last quotes from him weren’t typed on Gearon’s iPad. Where’d they hide the body? Was there even a funeral? He looked like the dead walking as it was.

No, seriously, he’s right up there. Agreed that Joe was and is a huge part of the Hawks’ problem. And now he’s an expensive one. Once, he was seen as a savior. Little did we know.

I see where the NBA admits to making the wrong call where Marvin inbounded the ball and horford was fouled on the play. The league office says hawks should have gotten the two free throws and ball out of bounds with 3.9 seconds left. The hawks could have tied at the line and had a last second shot to win it or it would have gone to overtime. The league just admitted that it wanted the celtics to move on to the next round.

Sund drafted Teague, Jordan Crawford and found Ivan Johnson. He went to the Dollar Store and bought the best bench we’ve seen in about 10 years. The going rate for 23 YO SFs who just averaged around 14 points as the team’s 4th scoring option was around $7.5M. Maybe he should have known that would be Marvin’s high water mark… but that seems kind of silly to project a player would max out a 23. He locked up Josh and Al at very reasonable contracts. The Joe deal was surely at the behest of ownership… does anyone think that SUnd had the authority to sign someone to $120M deal without full support from the bosses? (I can’t buy $12 in paper clips without approval from the f’ing CFO in my company). The Hinrich trade was bad. The use of 2nd round picks as ways to fund the basketball operation surely were not his thoughts (but those of the guys who are managing the financial ledger). Do I want him as our for the next 5 years? No, but the lemonade that he has made with the lemons hasn’t been too bad.

In addition to my boycott of Phillips arena, I write a weekly letter to both Rick Sund and ASG. I dont know if they even read them, but if ALL us fans do our part, we CAN make a difference. Every little thing helps….boycott every game, voice displeasure on every radio/tv show you can get onto, voice displeasure at every sports bar, protest outside Phillips, wear a paper bag with “ASG” written on it if you do decide to attend a game (not recomended), send weekly or even daily letters to every department within the Hawks organization that you can, write letters to ESPN about the terrible situation the Hawks are in (maybe with enough letters they will do a story, unlikely because they hate Atlanta, but still worth a shot), dont purchase any Hawks memorabilia, and dont give the Hawks and ASG any money. These tiny things are what we fans can do about correcting the situation… My goals and desires before next season will be for….

1.ASG to voluntarily step down as owners, admit they have messed up sincerely, and sell the Hawks to a single owner, with a passion for the game and a serious commitment to winning a championship. If they do not willingly step down and sell the team in the next 2 or 3 months, I would hope that David Stern steps in and saves the city of Atlanta from ASG. This is the first and most pressing issue with the Hawks.

2. Once the new owner comes in and provides a fresh, new, and uplifting spirit to this city. I would like to see Larry Drew fired. The assistants can go with him. Our entire coaching staff, from top to bottom needs a clean sweep. There should be an extensive search for an experienced, hard-nosed defensive-minded coach with a proven track record. A couple of years ago we picked Larry Drew over Tom Thibideau. These are the types of decisions the new ownership cant make. I would like to see us pick a high ranking assistant from a proven, consistent team such as the Bulls or Spurs. We need a great coach, and hopefully he can bring some of his other assistants from his organization to fill the rest of the coaching staff. We need a complete overhaul here.

3. Fire Rick Sund immediately. Even before Larry Drew. Like yesterday. Do i need to say why? Well I will anyways… Joe Johnson 6yr/120 mil, Marvin Williams 5yr/35 mil. Replacing Jamal Crawford with 3 over the hill guys with bad knees (T-Mac, Stackhouse, Dampier). Drafting Sheldon Williams with the 5th overall pick, Drafting Marvin Williams with #2 overall pick when we needed a PG and Chris Paul and Deron Williams were still on the board. Refusing to get us a decent Center for 5 years running now…instead playing the finesse 6′10 PF Horford at Center instead. Worst GM in the game…the absolute worst. 30 of 30.

4. Major personnel changes. Obviously, Joe will be hard to move, so we will have to amnesty him and spread out that remaining 89 million over 9 years (4 x 2 +1) if I read the rules correctly…that will hamstring us for awhile, but it will essentially cut his cap from around 22 million/year to just under 10 mil, and that should give us a decent amount of room. Trade Marvin for a third string Center, just take anything for him. He has been here years now, and never gets any better. time to cut ties. If we can get Joe Amenstied and Marvin traded, we will be in good shape. Josh, I would like to keep long term for the right price, and I really think with a halfway decent coach, he could really become an elite guy in the NBA, similar to a Kevin Garnett or Tim Duncan. The only thing holding him back is his bad habits, I mean essentially KG is Josh without the bad habits, and a little bit more consistent jumpshot. I would like to see Josh with a better coach. Keep Teague and Al (they are the guys we need to build around). Keep ZaZa, Ivan, Pargo, and Willie. Cut the rest of the dead weight. T-Mac, Dampier, Collins, Vlad-Rad, and Hinrich can all go. I would like to see Joe go as well, but obviously the entire league laughs at that contract and nobody is going to touch it.

with all these things, I think the Hawks can start to heal from this horrid situation ASG put us in. But as they point out “at least the Hawks are only one of 3 teams to make it to the 2nd round for 3 years in a row”….what a joke of an ownership to make a statement like that, like they are proud of building a slightly above mediocre basketball team. They have no clue how much they have hamstringed our chances of even sniffing the Finals once they gave Joe Johnson 120 million dollars. Pathetic….

Just watched that game again. Basically the refs swallowed their whistle when the Hawks had the ball. The last 30 secs:
1. Joe was fouled by Pierce as he attempted a layup (he crashed into the camera’s after the play).

2. Horford was fouled before the pass, but IF he hadn’t blown the whistle Josh had back doored KG for a EASY dunk!

3. The foul on Horford should have been a flagrant two. He was grabbed by the shoulders and his jersey was pulled! Hawks should have had two free throws and the ball.

4. The last shot by Teague, well Rondo fouled him. I watched replay after replay, – Rondo jumped in front and put has hands up as Teague crashed to the floor.

The jumper Josh shot – actually was not a bad shot (although his jumper was off). He has hit that shot all season long. Nobody cut to the basket on that play.

I still fault LD. He should have made an adjustment to put Al or Garnett ALL GAME!

Are you high Astro Joe?? Saying Rick Sund is anything but the worst GM in the NBA is hilarious. OH, because he got us Ivan, Teague, and Jordan Crawford…he is good? I will admit finding Ivan was a steal. Teague is still not very consistent, and I doubt he will ever be more than a 13-14 pt., 5-6 assist guy who is wildly incosistent with his effort and energy. Would have been a great 2nd round pick, but for 17th overall he is average. Jordan Crawford…decent…BUT HE TRADED HIM AWAY with another 1st rounder for Hinrich….Obviously he messed up that one (which you even admitted). So in what 6,7, 8 years? (however long Sund has been here) the ONE good move he has done is get Ivan. He does not get credit for locking up Josh and Al to reasonable deals…thats just part of what any GM that is not braindead does…He missed terribly on the Joe and Marvin deals…He missed horribly on the Speedy Claxton deal, he signed Jason Collins and Eric Dampier to contracts despite not being even close to NBA caliber… He let Jamal and his 18ppg go because he didnt want to pay his measly 2.5 million dollar salary. Then he has messed up on basically every draft pick other than Horford. Marvin, Sheldon, Acie Law, etc. So finding Ivan makes up for years and years of terrible draft picks, signings, and personnel decisions?? Rick Sund on a 1 to 10 scale as a GM… I would honestly give a 1.2 to.

AJ – Great post on Sund. Very rational and not emotional. People need to consider these things rather than just blaming.

Grandad – Teague went from option 3 to option 4 and 5 with Al back – and Marvin actually playing decent the past two games.

6 assists against no turnovers – holding Rondo to below 10 assists for the first time since March 9th, The only Hawk to play all regular season and playoff games.

Teague 23, 1st year starter vs Rondo – 26 multiple time All Star and World Champion.

Teague held his own. And he posted better numbers than Rondo did in 2008 when the Celts won it all.

Watch for Teague to keep improving the next 2-3 years. He may have a better ceiling than I thought he did.

Couldn’t ask for more out of Teague.

I have analyzed this series like crazy – after the emotion has died down, and yes we lost this series many different ways – not holding an 11 point lead in game 2, losing game 3 in OT with a chance to win in regulation, losing a very winnable game last nite, the substitution patterns of LD etc.

But really the main reasons we lost this series? Two HOF performances by HOF’ers – PP in game 2 with some crazy statline of 36 and 14 with Rondo out.

And Garnett with 28 and 14. And Garnett was unguardable last nite. When a 7-1 guy makes contested jumpers, there is nothing you can do to stop it really.

You could throw a couple of Rondo’s performance’s in there also – some Statline nobody has ever had in the playoffs in one of the games.

We got beat by two aging Hall of Famers playing stellar games primarily – with many secondary causes.
