“I look at our team kind of like the Boston Celtics of the 80s, when they had Bird, Walton, Ainge, Parrish, McHale–you don’t know on what night which guy is going to get the points. That is when we are at our best.” -Jr Gearon-

Kinda like them,… except for the fact that the 80s Celtics had FOUR HOFers (plus DJ who SHOULD be in the HOF). How many do the Hawks have, LOL?

OB, in those quotes, were they saying that there would be no excuses for not making the second round? For not making the ECF? Or was it a generic statement about not making excuses for having a less than typical season? I’m guessing the latter.

“…More from the article;

“Early in camp, Hawks players seemed focused on what the team didn’t have. They said they wanted the team to re-sign sixth man Crawford or replace him with another explosive scorer. Instead, the Hawks added guards Tracy McGrady, Jannero Pargo and Willie Green, players who should improve the defense, but likely won’t have the same impact on offense as Crawford.

Hawks captains said the team could use another center, one who is a defensive force and a threat to
score in the post. The Hawks re-signed Jason Collins, who is an effective defender in a very narrow role, and didn’t add another center..”

The players must have been talking to Rod and High-sider before the season started :smile: ” – O’brien

I feel sorry for Tracy McGrady. ” On paper ” the Hawks looked like the type of team that would benefit from his leadership, experience and skill set. The ” reality ” of the situation is that the Hawks are a bunch of average – good NBA players with average – low basketball IQ’s, and the coach ( Larry Drew ) allows his star players ( Josh Smith, Al Horford, Joe Johnson) to constantly break plays and run ISO every chance they get. Its not surprising that the Hawks lost the way they did because they’ve been playing the same way all yr. Either Larry Drew is a complete dufus or chump because there is no way that you can tell me that he constantly draws up plays where Joe Johnson & Josh Smith are suppose to dribble 20 seconds and then shoot a fadaway jump shot with a defender’s hand in their face, when there are 4 other guys wide open !!

Why should we make excuses for this team and say that they could’ve quit early in the season when the lost Horford along with the other rash of injuries, REALLY ? since when is it right for any PROFESSIONAL basketball player who is paid millions of dollars to quit and not try to help his team win to the best of his abilities ?

Larry Drew is not a head coach, he is a glorified assistant . Doc Rivers is not afraid to get in his star players faces and let them know that they f’d up and that they need to play better. LD just sit there and looks like a deer caught in the road and then he makes excuses for his star players afterwards. I

Tracy: You still got enough in the tank to help out a contender. LD just didn’t use you correctly and the Hawks wasn’t as good as they seemed on paper.

Since Lamar Odom didn’t work out in Dallas, go sign with the Mavericks, or the Lakers, or the Heat…or even consider ending your career back home with the Magic. You turn 33 next month so you still got a 2-3 yr window to make it happen. Hell KG, Paul Pierce & Ray Allen are all over 34 and as long as you’re on a team with a good balance of young and veteran players – its all about making it to the post season healthy and leaving it all on the court.

Al Horford has no more basketball IQ than Josh…he proved it last night.

Yet, we keep appeasing him and we don’t ask him to play defense on the other team’s center. Anyone else notice that?

Mistakes by all 3 of our captains….and that is unacceptable. But no one in this organization will call them out for their mistakes.

AJ,

I’m guessing the latter too.

The hope for general manager Rick Sund and the team’s ownership is that these players have reached a nexus of talent and experience and are ready to be true contenders in the East. Drew thinks they can do it and plans to hold his players to that standard. .

imo, I think they were looking for a game 7 in the second round at the very least, because at least that way, you have a chance to get to the ECF.

“Yet, we keep appeasing him and we don’t ask him to play defense on the other team’s center. Anyone else notice that?”

Kevin, I assumed that since Al had openly talked two weeks ago about not having enough strength to play in the post for the playoffs, that LD was just putting him where he could be most effective.

Are you saying that you think Al ASKED not to guard KG? What do you mean by “appeasing him”?

KevinM,

Mistakes by all 3 of our captains….and that is unacceptable. But no one in this organization will call them out for their mistakes..

Josh gets called out sometimes for his shot selection (and rightfully so). Teague gets called out too. But Marvin, JJ, and even Al dont get called out often enough.

“When a coach tells you, ‘No excuses,’ he holds you responsible as a player,” Hawks forward Marvin Williams said. “It shouldn’t be any other way. You know your job.”.

Is it just me, or is Marvin Williams always being interviewed? Does anybody care what Marvin has to say?

LD deserves a lot of heat for how he has coached this series too.

In game 2, Rondo was out, and Ray Allen was out. So who did everybody say would have to carry the extra load? Paul Pierce. And what was our defensive game plan on Paul Pierce? I don’t know, but Paul Pierce ended up with 36 points on 46% shooting.

For Last night’s game, Ray Allen is still hurtng, and Paul Pierce is hurting. So who would carry the load? Rondo and KG. What was our defensive game plan against them?

I don’t know, but KG had 28 pts, 14 rebs and 5 blocks. In the history of the Celtics, no one (not Russell, Parish, McHale etc) has ever done that.

Where is the coaching adjustments?

We should be on the phone right now with Bryan Shaws agent…..LD is clearly not the right coach for this team. Where was the benc in the last 2 games. Ivan johnson and pargo should have seen more minutes.
Joe Cool wants more shots huh? My god he is hard to watch dribble dribble dribble .Its nearly impossible to get rid of that contract so were stuck.

Regardless of what the talking heads say Josh is a keeper- get a no nonsense type coach in here before we get rid of our best player. IMO anybody not named teague or Smith can go via trade.

JJ/ZAZA for Rudy Gay 2nd round pick …… the money adds up

I would like to get Cousins if at all possible we would have to give up Horford but so what …..

Its pretty simple what we need to do to win: get rid of everyone not named Al or Jeff. Yes this includes the coach and the owners.

I am convinced that Josh Smith could become an all-star with a change of scenery. The only possible reason that anyone could be so idiotic as to keep shooting long jump shots is because he’s got a posse of ass-kissers from his childhood that keep stroking his jump-shooter ego.

LD had an exceptional yr as a coach:
All you Carps out there pick up on his shortcomings.
-Yet-
fail to mention anything the man gets right.
Doubling PPin the 2nd half last eve was brilliant.
He did not run Iso late;
actually ran two pick & rolls with Al:
(1st one) Teaguer missed Al on the slip
(2nd one) Joe not only missed Al on the slip;
he had his head down pounding the ball [not looking]
and ended up taking a step back jumper.
* note – two missed dunk / lay-up opportunities.
____________________________________________

Officiating [late]
Joe was fouled [hammered] by PP
the foul occurred before Marv threw the ball in
* note maybe the whistle had not blown;
-but-
the foul had already occurred !
Then;
Al was fouled intentionally
Daniels grabbed him around the head & shoulders
and pulled him to the floor.
No attempt on the ball.
* note – much worse than Teaguer`s previous ‘`tech`’ / intentional
on Rondo.
All this on final sequence

I.MUS. Why do you want to keep Josh? Every brilliant pass or drive is canceled by an idiotic turnover or long jumpshot. His impact on the game adds up to zero. In game 5 and game 6 how many negative momentum changes did Josh take part in?

One second our passing and scoring is looking great, we’re building a lead. Then Josh makes some stupid mistake. But then to add to that, he comes back on the offensive end and hoists up a long jumper to try and rectify his mistake. Before you know it the game is tied.

OB, in the 4th, I saw us FINALLY double teaming a limping Paul Pierce…(isn’t that amazing?) and that was an adjustment I saw.
But there weren’t enough of them to even get us past the 80 point mark.
We shot 10 FTs the entire game for a game that physical….the refs blew very few whistles, especially that late whistle on the inbounds on the end line on Al.

Sautee, what I meant by LD appeasing Al is Al is not being told to go get KG because Josh can or cannot jump high enough to block a shot. I didn’t count, but how many jumpers did KG shoot over Josh, much less make? I truly think LD told Al don’t worry about KG probably because he wasn’t at full strength.

That non-adjustment bit us big time.

Aside from the refs, had Joe come back into Pierce on that late drive, he would have gotten 2 shots. To me, that’s not knowing how to be smart in those situations. If you miss the basket, at minimum, you are on the line.

We don’t do enough of that bumping towards the defender on our way to the basket. If you need some lessons, pull up a Pierce clip.

Then you should be accusing LD. When you say LD is “appeasing” Al it suggests that Al didn’t want to play against KG. And unless you have solid info on that, and haven’t told us, you should stick to criticizing LD on his choices. Appeasement suggests some kind of demand from Al. If that’s your conjecture, fine, but say so.

Yeah High-Sider I’m looking pretty dumb with that Celtics in 6 prediction.
————————————————————————————————

More than you realize. First, you, Buddy Grizzard, said the Hawks would be better off without Jamal Crawford and then you make the aforementioned “prediction” that the Hawks would lose in six [games] to the Celtics.

You actually contradict the hell out of yourself. With Jamal Crawford, the Hawks finished their 2011 postseason record at 6-6 [0.500] and without Jamal Crawford, the Hawks finished their 2012 postseason record at 2-4 [0.333].

Which postseason record is better [out of the playoff runs of 2011 and 2012]? How are/were the Hawks better [this postseason] without Jamal Crawford? With Jamal Crawford, the Hawks advanced to the EC Semifinals in 2011; without Jamal Crawford, the Hawks failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs in 2012.

How can you say the Hawks are better without Jamal Crawford and then predict the Hawks to lose in the first round when Jamal Crawford was a major factor in helping the Hawks advance to the second round last year? You should have at least predicted the Hawks to win seven [7] playoff games this postseason; that would at the very least show marginal [postseason] improvement.

Who does the hiring [and firing] at “Hoopinion”? Does “Hoopinion” or Brett Lagree perform background checks or psychological examinations of prospective writers/contributors?

KevinM

5:22 pm

Which is it Sautee? I said that Al was not being told he has to guard KG….does that not lead to a presumption that Al could be stating he doesn’t have enough strength to go against KG?
Appease means to satisfy someone…..I can see LD doing that. If you’re telling me these guys do everything LD says, you’re kidding yourself.

Josh could have said let me take KG, but the right decision may have been to let LD make that call instead of a player.
How many times have we seen Al take on the non-center? This isn’t something new. But when something isn’t working, like Josh on KG, then shouldn’t an improvement be seen in game?

Do you see LD taking charge in the huddle? I see him talking but the players scrambling and taking different positions in the huddle.

Give me another coach and give me players who know what to do in critical moments. We lack both.

Mike

5:26 pm

You guys who can’t understand that there’s more to basketball than a set of moves and a jump shot, I apologize. This is why the Celtics will likely be heading to AT LEAST the EC Finals – they play INSPIRING defense with energy and passion. They care whether they win or lose! Avery Bradley is out there hustling his balls off while Josh Smith dogs it back on defense not contesting any shots and not hustling. This is why you need to build the team around Al, Williams, Teague, and Hinrich – they play with INTENSITY! That’s how you win a ball game!

1. MC looks completely clapped out/disengaged/nervous in this video

2. Astro Joe
“Regarding Josh, I’ve said it several times recently, offer him an extension this summer. The only way they should trade him is if he doesn’t sign it. Basically, put the ball in his court… but I’m not trading anyone until he accepts an extension.”

We can’t. By letting Memphis sign him to an offer sheet and us matching, we lost that power.

3. Just wait til this Christopher Mehegan guy is applying for jobs in the near future and a potential employer googles his name and finds this. Good luck buddy

4. I cannot believe we went away from Horford down the stretch. He is so much more athletic than Boston’s frontline. He owned them like 3 straight trips

5. 16-0 run for Celtics? I never ever ever ever ever trust our team with a lead…EVER

6. OFFENSE was the issue. You can’t be down 74-65 and have so many MISERABLE possessions in a row. Defense was fine in the 4th. We DID NOT EXECUTE. There’s no stopping an angry and hungry Kevin Garnett with a 6″9 tweener

7. If we are shaking things up this summer, keep Teague, Horford, and ZaZa and trade the other guys for whatever you can get.

8. Boston really is not that good and will get exposed probably in the ECF if they play Miami…We let Paul Pierce with a freaking sprained knee score 18 points.

9. WTF @ those technical fouls. IN AN ELIMINATION GAME?!?! Boston did miss a ton of them.

10. Josh takes way too many risks and is all over the place. This guy needs a mentor, or MAYBE WE SHOULD HIRE AN ACTUAL BIG MAN COACH, and HE NEEDS TO LEARN HOW TO PASS AND DRIBBLE A BASKETBALL. This guy had the nerve to say he had a great Basketball IQ in an article about him and Rondo. SMH

11. Josh Smith REALLY NEEDS TO GROW UP. Someone who can be like LeBron in so many ways plays like an immature 8th grader in so many ways.

12. When Rondo is hitting fadeaways at the buzzer over our best man defender, you know we aren’t going to win.

13. While the refs sucked last night (like 209,205 different holds on that play Josh hoisted that horrendous jumper at the end that they didn’t call), Boston is just a better team. They have better stars, a FAR better coach, and better fans.

14. Only way I’d bring back same core next year is if we had a Van Gundy or Sloan leading this team. Imagine Adelman or Sloan disciplining Josh for his HORRENDOUS SHOT SELECTION THAT NO PRIOR COACH HAS EVER BEEN ABLE TO ADDRESS/FIX. Sloan would teach Jeff Teague what confidence is and we’d actually run some plays in crunchtime.

15. Did LD really say we are at our best with Josh/Al leading the break?

16. WTF WAS THAT BS TEAGUE DRIBBLING FOR 23 SECONDS AND THEN SOME WILD LEFT HANDED SHOT?

17. Marvin had a terrible first 4 games of the series but was okay the last 2. Not acceptable for someone making that kind of money. Dude did nothing the first 3 games of the series

I probably have about 50 or 60 more points but have already mentioned them before.

Northcyde post @ 1:44 PM is post of the day. Horford’s midrange is great but he really needs to get a post game already. He looked pretty decent physically for someone who probably hasn’t done a ton of weight work – no homo. I thought he had said a lot of people thought he lost a lot weight?

As much as we all talking about what players need to move or coach, or GM let’s get one thing straight we need new ownership first and foremost this Brady Bunch group needs to GTFO of Atlanta.

Arthur Blank please buy the team maybe with a cherry on top.

If we can even get past that phase next is to get ourselves a solid GM doesn’t have to be on the Spurs level, but at least someone who doesn’t let talents basically just fall in their lap or hope that we have a diamond in the rough. When you drafting people like Pape Sy and Gladyr whatever that kids name was you better be the Spurs.

After we can get a solid GM we need a Head Coach that is outside this culture we need a new type of head coach basically we had a shot at Avery Johnson he wasn’t my first choice, but better than L.D at least with A.J we might have sniffed the 3rd found a.k.a ECF.

Then last we can talk about which players stay or go.

Well actually Marvin just needs to go now there is no reason to hold onto him let him get a new start somewhere else.
