Atlanta Hawks: NBA admits blown call in Game 6 (plus notes)
9:20 pm May 11, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
The NBA said Marquis Daniels should have been called sooner for fouling Al Horford on an inbound play with 3.1 seconds left in Game 6. If game officials had made the correct call the Hawks, who trailed 81-79 at the time, would have been awarded a free throw and possession of the ball.
The league posted a link with an explanation on one of its official Twitter accounts:
During the last two minutes of the fourth period or overtime, if a personal foul is assessed against the defensive team prior to the ball being released on a throw-in, it is considered an Away-From-The-Play Foul and the offensive team is awarded one free throw and possession of the ball. With 3.1 seconds remaining in the the Boston-Atlanta game last night, a foul was called on the Celtics’ Marquis Daniels after the Hawks’ Marvin Williams had released the ball and therefore the foul was correctly treated as a common foul and not an Away-From-the-Play foul. With that said, however, the replay shows that the foul on Daniels should have been called sooner than it was by the officials, in which case it would have met the requirements of an Away-From-The-Play Foul.
I watched the video numerous times and it’s very close as to whether Daniels was called for a foul before Marvin released the ball. In any event, league spokesman Tim Frank said the rules do not give game officials the option to look at a video replay to determine when the ball is thrown in or when a foul is committed.
Of course there is no recourse for the Hawks, who protested the call during the game. Coach Larry Drew said game officials told him Daniels fouled Horford after Williams released the ball.
“That would have been a huge play, a huge turn of events,” Josh Smith said.
Horford said game officials didn’t offer the players much of an explanation.
“We knew we were on the road and we weren’t going to get anything [and] we were going to have to earn everything we got so it was no surprise they didn’t call the foul earlier,” he said. “He was grabbing me the whole time.”
Notes from exit interview day
- Drew said neither he nor his agent have talked to Hawks management about his contract option for next season. He said he planned to “get away for a few days” before taking up the issue next week.
- Not sure how much there is to the Chris Broussard report linking Rick Sund to the Portland GM opening. Hawks owners have expressed an interest in re-signing Sund but haven’t made a formal offer. Sund has told people he may be interested in a part-time consulting role with the Hawks or another team and also is considering retirement.
- Josh didn’t have much to say about his future, except to repeat “I’m under contract for one more year with the Hawks” and remind media that he could be fined for talking about the reports of his trade request. His trade request still stands for all the reasons I reported before the trade deadline. I’m told another factor that can be added to the list is his desire to play in what he believes to be a better basketball market. But I’m sure you might have inferred that from the way Josh (without prompting) contrasted Boston’s fans with Atlanta’s throughout the series.
- Al said he would resume rehabilitation for his pectoral. “I’m very limited,” he said. “I made a lot of progress in two weeks but I’m about 50 or 60 percent strength.” He reiterated that he didn’t feel comfortable returning before Game 4: “I knew I had a ways to go. Even when I came back, I felt limited. I gave it all I had for the team and for the city. Our city had big expectations for us. It was unfortunate we had a number of injuries and couldn’t do what we wanted.”
- Drew wouldn’t say exactly went wrong on Atlanta’s penultimate possession, which ended with Josh missing a 22-footer, except to say the ball was supposed to go to Joe Johnson. I watched the replay a few times and best I can tell is that Josh was supposed to set a pick to free Joe to cut to the basket or, if Paul Pierce and Brandon Bass switched, end up in the high post against Pierce. However, it looked as if Josh released his screen too soon and stepped out to the perimeter.
- Al on the play: “We drew up a play. I thought it was a pretty good play. I got it and swung it to Josh. Joe, they did a good job denying him, so Josh forced up a tough shot. It didn’t go down.”
- Mike Prada at SB Nation has a different interpretation of the play. He thinks the first option was for Al to feed Josh the ball on the left block. That doesn’t jibe with Drew’s explanation but both could be true considering Drew’s plays have multiple options. Prada also thinks the Celtics got away with a lot of clutching and grabbing on the play. (H/T Jason Walker of Peachtree Hoops).

Was thinking that I could see Josh wanting to go to Boston since he is cool with Rondo. I just dont see how Boston would acquire him.
Was thinking which teams Joe J could go. I could see Knicks but I do not think Atlanta would take on that money even though it is less years and a frontline of Amare Horford Smith is somewhat weak defeneively.
I could see if Nets do not get Dwight and keep Deron could see them trading for Joe Johnson.
Slimjr, I know you like Rudy Gay. I have followed him since his last year of high school but he has a good game but again as you say today same with Danny Granger, they are Robin type of players they are good not sure they get you over the hump if they are on the Hawks.

Where did you see me say the Hawks would do any better? They have already proven the Celtics are better, and I have said all season that they would have no chance to beat the Heat in a series.

OB, George Karl is one of those “difference makers” among NBA head coaches. Javale needed that, I’m very, very confident that he will be far better with Karl than he would be with LD. On the contrary, K-Mart is an old vet who knows what he is doing. VDN is a lot closer to LD than he is to Karl.

Just Joe,
I forgot about Josh’s trade kicker, which is reported as 15% of the value of his remaining contract. So with $13.2 mil remaining on his deal, the other team would owe him $15.2 mil. Nobody will pay him that (imo) unless he agrees to an extension first, Because imagine if a team trades for him, only to see him walk away as a FA.
brigadierjerry,
If Boston wants him, they would wait for him to become a FA (they are way under the cap in 2013).

How badly do you want to get rid of JJ? Do you need equal talent in return, or just want to get rid of his salary?
Orlando will want to impress Dwight Howard, so maybe they are interested in trading for JJ to pair with Dwight. But if you’re the Hawks, would you trade JJ (4 years, $89 mil) for Jason Richardson (3 years, $18.6 mil) and HedoTurkoglu (2 years, $23.6 mil)?
That deal gives us nothing close to equal value on the court(imo), but it would give us more flexibility in 2013 and beyond. And let’s face it. If the ASG owns the team, they will not amnesty JJ, paying him $48 mil (his salary the last 2 years, just to go away).
In a perfect world, they would amnesty Marvin this offseason (imo), assuming they can’t find a trade partner for him, let LD and Rick go, bring in an established coach (like Sloan), and a new GM, even if he has only been an assistant GM somewhere else. And with Kirk’s contract off the books, and Marvin’s salary, maybe they could sign an impact FA for a change.

Jeff Teague the worst PG in the playoffs? Are you sure about that?
CJ Watson started 5 of 6 games for the Bulls – Didn’t play nearly as well as Teague in the playoffs
Darren Collison for the Pacers is at best Jeff’s equal. George Hill below Teague in most every category.
Chalmers again may at best be equal to Teague.
Baron Davis and Mike Bibby are nowhere close to Jeff Teague. Not now.
Ramon Sessions is a little below Teague statistically in most categories. Close, but not quite Teague.
Devin Harris right now is probably no more than Teague’s equal. Maybe not as good. Check the stats.
So Teague was not the worst PG in the playoffs by any measure – Regular season or playoff performance.
And you could make the case that Jeff had a better regular season than JRue Holiday. Check the stats.

If you really wanted to trade Josh, I’m sure Boston would trade picks 21 and 22 for him. Two first picks for Josh – We would have picks 21-23 in the draft. Supposedly a deep draft – so if we were sure we had 3 guys we liked in those spots, like Tony Wroten, Arnett Moultrie, and Fab Melo or Festus Ezelli, we could probably do worse.
And use the savings of about 9.4million to sign Kevin Garnett for 3 years at 8 million per.
Your Frontcourt rotation would be ZaZa, Al, and KG. 2 more young bigs behind them.
And a G that has alot of talent in Wroten.
Make the deal with Boston, but don’t make it official until after the #20 pick is drafted, so you can make sure the players you want are still on the board.
I know the negatives. Just a thought.

Trade Josh NOW.
Now, before you folks get all mad at me please let me explain. I think Josh Smith is probably the best player the Hawks have (close battle with Horford). I love watching him play hard almost all the time.
That being said .. the Hawks are strapped with one of the worst contracts in NBA history. They are paying the 20th best scorer in the playoffs(JJ) a max contract at one of the easiest positions to fill with decent talent. Not only that, everyone above him has a much better field goal percentage, meaning JJ has to shoot far more often just to rank 20th.
Since the Hawks simply cannot move JJ, then they need to realize they will not win it all for the next 5-6 years and need to start thinking about this. Simply put, they should trade to anyone willing to take his contract. If they cannot, then they need to start moving other pieces and start rebuilding … again. Josh is easily the most sought after piece and they may walk away with NOTHING if they don’t trade him. I will hate to see him leave this team, but it’s probably best for the Hawks long-term .. and it’s certainly best for Josh.

“How badly do you want to get rid of JJ? Do you need equal talent in return, or just want to get rid of his salary?”
There is no way the Hawks get anything close to equal value for Joe, if by “equal value” you mean a top 5 player at his position who has made multiple All Star games. If the Hawks are lucky, they will get a first round pick and cap space. If they have to take back multi-year contracts, they should be multi-year contracts that can be traded for cap space and/or picks. I don’t like that Orlando deal either.

‘`JoeJohnson`’
Is to trade him to the NYK for Amare.

*Melo endorsed Wdsn
*Amare – not so much
Reasons for Joe leavin`
*Joe Must Go
** straight up Joe for Amare **

I wouldn’t be against a JJ for Amare deal. Both teams may benefit from that move actually. The Knicks would just have to find a defensive/rebounding 4 to take Amare’s spot ( Reggie Evans ), while Melo and JJ take all of the shots.
Lin ( if re-signed )
JJ
Melo
Evans
Chandler
Hawks:
Teague
????
Smith
Amare
Horford
So who fills JJ’s spot at the 2? Shannon Brown? A re-signed Hinrich? Nick Young ( who may be out of our price range )
It would’ve been Jordan Crawford . . but oops, we traded him. Hey, maybe some of you will get your wish, and Jamal opts not to take the 5 mill, and the Hawks sign him to something like a 3 yr – 12 mill deal. That way, ya’ll ( we ) can root for Jamal again.

Joe for Amare is only a good trade because it gets rid of Joe’s contract. I have no interest in building this team around a 30 year old, non-defensive, non-rebounding PF who needs a pass-first PG to create shots for him and has knees so bad that his contract can’t be insured. If the Hawks trade Joe for Amare (which is a good short-term trade for the Knicks) it has to be followed up by trading Amare for someone else or cap space.

the exit interviews will occur probably next week, around the time they clean their lockers out for the Summer. First Coach Drew, then the GM. Then the coaches individually meet with the GM/owners.
IDK, if the players meet with the owners or not, I guess that is possible.
This is where all the back stabbing occurs, in private. (hehe) … GM – JeJe, not doubt there will be a lot of finger pointing and blaming going on. MVT will be able to tell how, they wouldn’t give him the ball to initiate the offense. If Jeff doesn’t rebound it himself, no assists. LOL

**********************
So Nash would have to defend people like Dwyane Wade, Joe Johnson ( if traded to the Knicks to play the 2 ), and chase around Ray Allen ( if he re-signs with the Celtics on the cheap )?
Nah Grandad. That backcourt is way too small. Either way it goes, Nash is going to be a major defensive weak link. And it’s unfair to ask Teague to guard people much bigger than him. Teague would have to be the 6th man off the bench. We’d need a defensive SG if we’re going with Nash at the point, and Teague rotating between the 1 and the 2.
And the end of game scenario, no way we could play Nash and Teague together in a tight game. Teague isn’t Joe Dumars.
