Atlanta Hawks: NBA admits blown call in Game 6 (plus notes)
9:20 pm May 11, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
The NBA said Marquis Daniels should have been called sooner for fouling Al Horford on an inbound play with 3.1 seconds left in Game 6. If game officials had made the correct call the Hawks, who trailed 81-79 at the time, would have been awarded a free throw and possession of the ball.
The league posted a link with an explanation on one of its official Twitter accounts:
During the last two minutes of the fourth period or overtime, if a personal foul is assessed against the defensive team prior to the ball being released on a throw-in, it is considered an Away-From-The-Play Foul and the offensive team is awarded one free throw and possession of the ball. With 3.1 seconds remaining in the the Boston-Atlanta game last night, a foul was called on the Celtics’ Marquis Daniels after the Hawks’ Marvin Williams had released the ball and therefore the foul was correctly treated as a common foul and not an Away-From-the-Play foul. With that said, however, the replay shows that the foul on Daniels should have been called sooner than it was by the officials, in which case it would have met the requirements of an Away-From-The-Play Foul.
I watched the video numerous times and it’s very close as to whether Daniels was called for a foul before Marvin released the ball. In any event, league spokesman Tim Frank said the rules do not give game officials the option to look at a video replay to determine when the ball is thrown in or when a foul is committed.
Of course there is no recourse for the Hawks, who protested the call during the game. Coach Larry Drew said game officials told him Daniels fouled Horford after Williams released the ball.
“That would have been a huge play, a huge turn of events,” Josh Smith said.
Horford said game officials didn’t offer the players much of an explanation.
“We knew we were on the road and we weren’t going to get anything [and] we were going to have to earn everything we got so it was no surprise they didn’t call the foul earlier,” he said. “He was grabbing me the whole time.”
Notes from exit interview day
- Drew said neither he nor his agent have talked to Hawks management about his contract option for next season. He said he planned to “get away for a few days” before taking up the issue next week.
- Not sure how much there is to the Chris Broussard report linking Rick Sund to the Portland GM opening. Hawks owners have expressed an interest in re-signing Sund but haven’t made a formal offer. Sund has told people he may be interested in a part-time consulting role with the Hawks or another team and also is considering retirement.
- Josh didn’t have much to say about his future, except to repeat “I’m under contract for one more year with the Hawks” and remind media that he could be fined for talking about the reports of his trade request. His trade request still stands for all the reasons I reported before the trade deadline. I’m told another factor that can be added to the list is his desire to play in what he believes to be a better basketball market. But I’m sure you might have inferred that from the way Josh (without prompting) contrasted Boston’s fans with Atlanta’s throughout the series.
- Al said he would resume rehabilitation for his pectoral. “I’m very limited,” he said. “I made a lot of progress in two weeks but I’m about 50 or 60 percent strength.” He reiterated that he didn’t feel comfortable returning before Game 4: “I knew I had a ways to go. Even when I came back, I felt limited. I gave it all I had for the team and for the city. Our city had big expectations for us. It was unfortunate we had a number of injuries and couldn’t do what we wanted.”
- Drew wouldn’t say exactly went wrong on Atlanta’s penultimate possession, which ended with Josh missing a 22-footer, except to say the ball was supposed to go to Joe Johnson. I watched the replay a few times and best I can tell is that Josh was supposed to set a pick to free Joe to cut to the basket or, if Paul Pierce and Brandon Bass switched, end up in the high post against Pierce. However, it looked as if Josh released his screen too soon and stepped out to the perimeter.
- Al on the play: “We drew up a play. I thought it was a pretty good play. I got it and swung it to Josh. Joe, they did a good job denying him, so Josh forced up a tough shot. It didn’t go down.”
- Mike Prada at SB Nation has a different interpretation of the play. He thinks the first option was for Al to feed Josh the ball on the left block. That doesn’t jibe with Drew’s explanation but both could be true considering Drew’s plays have multiple options. Prada also thinks the Celtics got away with a lot of clutching and grabbing on the play. (H/T Jason Walker of Peachtree Hoops).

The league fined Gearon $35,000 for public criticism of officials and negative comments about Celtics forward Kevin Garnett..
Does that mean we will have to sell more second round picks?
And with a fine like that, I’m not surprised LD never complains about the refs. He is one of the lowest paid coaches in the NBA, so he can’t afford to get fined

Relax everybody, “it is already written” the Hawks will trade Josh Smith as soon as the playoff is over. Josh Smith is a very talent player who thinks he is not welcome in Atlanta. His ego have out grown his talent in ATL. The Hawks will make this trade and they will get a big man to play center. This will allow Horford to play the power forward position. Remember, Josh Smith have not made the all-star team for a reason. This trade will make the Hawks better and Josh Smith will play basketball much more harder with his new team. Why? He will have something to prove to himself and the Atlanta Hawks organization. I don’t know about you’ll, but I’m willing to take that chance. Something got to give.

So thanks to all of you for reading! It’s an empty exercise with no feedback, good or bad. MC I hope you’re staying on as beat writer. Nobody in my experience since I resumed caring about the Hawks in 2005 has done half as good a job as you have done of covering the team.

Slimjr,
Actually Teague shold be able to pattern his game like Lawson he has the speed like Lawson, but has to get craftier with the dribble but there isnt any reason he can play like Lawson does but a big portion of that is that he has to be given the keys to the team.

“I get the feeling the Sixers are going to get swept. Maybe they take a game in Philly, but I can’t see them going more than five games in this series. They have the same problems as the Hawks with half court offensive execution, except they have worse players and don’t have the defensive versatility to switch screens and cause the Celtics problems on offense like the Hawks did.
Yet they put up 91 points on that great Celtics defense, and we averaged 81ppg in the series, but some people think defense was the problem.

This Hawks organization has no class and it starts with the multi-headed monster of foot-in-mouth owners, who don’t know basketball-to do stupid things like running their mouths to the media, adding fuel to stoke the fire of an opposing team-while your own team is fighting for their playoffs lives-being down 3 games in the first round in the playoffs. That’s some real dumb stuff that “normal” folk don’t do. That’s the downside of having mulitiple wealthy amatur owners for a franchise in a city like Atlanta-which boast of many other things to do-besides looking at basketball. In Atlanta, even high school teams are revered more-than the NBA Atlanta Hawks. How bad is it? That’s how bad it is. There are many, many high school and middle school teams whose team names are “Hawks” and “Falcons”, that get way more allocades and local press-than your NBA Atlanta Hawks. Just pitiful.

Then there are the blog fans like Najeh, Grand-Daddy, O’Brien and Northcyde [et.al.] who tell a pretty objective story with some “noted” (disclosed by the writer) subjectivity sprinkled in here and there. But, as a beat writer MC does an excellent job and, just tells it like it [T.I. is.] and, without the inflammatory commentaries.

The Hawks did not have enough fire-power to get past the Celtics. The defense was fine except for that game 3, when the C’s scored 101 points.

@ darrell starks 6:49 pm (on the big lineup) – KG was taking Collins off the dribble or fading out for the mid-range jumper after trying to move the big fella in Games 1 – 2. The Collins effect was no longer …(wait for it …) “effective”. Our bench, outside of Games 1 and 3, was kinda nullified and gave up some leads when Doc Rivers rode his starters in the 3Q/4Q transition time.
@ OB (11:55 pm) – Thurs. afternoon I sent a tweet re: ASG selling off a pick for the fine that you KNOW was coming
( @decatur_g )
Josh didn’t outright lose the game for us. That shot was Highly Questionable (LOL) …. We had two cracks at a bucket to expand our lead just before KG his that over-the-tip jumper w/0:30 sec; a difficult Teague layup around KG (rolled off rim), and a JJ stepback jumper when R. Hollins switched on him with the shot clock running down.

I think the Hawks had enough firepower ..we had questionable end-of-game execution. Outside of Game 4 which was decided by the end of 1Q, every game came down to the last 2 minutes or less, including our two wins. We either got tight, reverted back to old habits (iso ball or questionable shot selection), or just couldn’t crack their defense.
If two opportunites (shots) go our way, I am sitting in Philly watching the Hawks in Game 1 of the EC semis – 1)Game 3 – Wille Green’s missed jumper with game tied at 80 w/13 seconds left; 20 Game 6 – the two cracks at expanding our 79-78 lead by Teague and JJ (see post @ 7:40 am)

Yeah man … nice break downs there. At the end of the day, we didn’t score enough points to change the outcome. The coach has to fix his offensive sets and, practice better for execution and precision.
To simply say, “… they did not run my play.” … is quite telling. And, begs the question: Why not?

Like I said yesterday, the officials blew the call…and the game for the Hawks…as usual. Also, on the foul of Horford on the resulting in bounds play, please prove the defender was trying to go for the ball! He grabbed Horford from behind with two hands on his shoulders….not trying to block the ball….deliberate foul in my book!
As for management of the team, it improved this year. Horford improved, but was injured. Teague improved. Smith…well…he still hasn’t found a shot he can’t take…no matter how bad a shot. (the Jumper he took in the fourth quarter was another Oh NO moment). Joe Johnson could not free himself from real defense….Get rid of Joe and Smith…resign the bench! Oh and sign a few refs for games with the NBA’s “preferred teams! (wink wink)

Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams to New York for Amare Stoudamire, Tony Douglas, and a S&T Landry Fields.
I know Stat’s injury concerns, but he has a year less on his deal than Joe and we have the depth up front to help limit his minutes. We go best SG available in the draft (Dion Waiters please). Veteran front line of Smith, Horford, and Stat (with Pachulia and Ivan off the bench). Young defensive minded guards in Teague, Douglas, Fields, and our first round pick. Find two shooters off the bench, draft a project big man in the second round, and play ball. Hawks can then look at trade options for Smith or Horford during the season.

Stat should be playing center in this league at this point in his career. Last year as a center for the Knicks, 25 pts, 8 boards, and nearly 2 blocks per game. As a PF next to Chandler this year, 17 & 8. Front line of Smith , Horford, and Stat, with quick, slashing guards that can also knock down a 3 when needed.

“My series analysis:
http://www.hoopinionblog.com/2012/05/lessons-learned-after-action-report.html…” – Buddy Grizzard
You, Buddy Grizzard, are a very good writer but many on this blog have come to realize that you are a fan or at least a supporter of certain individuals in the Hawks organization and, by the same token, [that] you dislike certain individuals in the Hawks organization. These individuals that you like include Ivan Johnson, Zaza Pachulia, Kirk Hinrich and maybe Rick Sund and the individuals that you have a disdain for include Joe Johnson, Larry Drew, Jason Collins [rightly so], Jamal Crawford [who's no longer with the Hawks] and others.
You point out Kirk Hinrich, as a reserve, scored seven points in seven minutes in Game 5 but failed to mention Hinrich, as a starter, scored two points in two games [Game(s) 3 and 4] in 48:46 of playing time. You, Buddy Grizzard, also mentioned that Kirk Hinrich had a +/- of zero [0] in Game 3 and that he [Hinrich] played good defense on Rondo but you don’t mention that Hinrich didn’t score a single point that game [Game 3]? What’s up with that? Two points in two [playoff] games for Hinrich as a starter is totally unacceptable and inexcusable. You stated the Hawks rewarded “negative behavior” [and "negative play"] but I see LD inserting Marvin Williams [which is debatable] into the starting lineup in place of Kirk Hinrich was LD’s demonstration/message [to the Hawks team] that poor “playoff” [scoring] performances were not going to be tolerated [very long].
I don’t understand your [constant] fascination, preoccupation, fixation, and obsession with +/- [plus/minus] statistics. On several occasions, you highlight Willie Green’s [and Jannero Pargo's] woeful +/- statistics and the lack of bench production but where is the criticism for the one responsible for putting this bench together – the one responsible for the [player] personnel and [reserve] roster, Rick Sund? You stated at the beginning of the season that you thought Rick Sund should garner [some] Executive of the Year consideration but look at what happened in the playoffs. Through the first three playoff games this [2012] postseason, the bench, I believe, scored a total of 56 points whereas Jamal Crawford, as a reserve [by himself] scored 71 points in the first three postseason games vs. the Orlando Magic in 2011. How did Rick Sund make the bench better this postseason? You may criticize LD all you want with his [LD's] use of the bench but, in all fairness to LD, when it comes to his use of the bench, LD is [just] “playing the hand that he’s [LD's] been dealt.” When the reserves for the regular season and postseason for the Hawks have included Willie Green, Jannero Pargo, Jason Collins, Vladimir Radmanovic, Erick Dampier, Tracy McGrady, Jerry Stackhouse, Marvin Williams, [rookie] Ivan Johnson, and Kirk Hinrich, it should be no surprise that the Hawks bench came up short this postseason. None of those aforementioned reserve players have proven to be a consistent bench scorer this regular season and postseason or an explosive scorer that could carry a [Hawks] team for several games in the postseason like a Jamal Crawford. Buddy Grizzard, your article in “Hoopinion” doesn’t even mention Rick Sund and his questionable, at best, player personnel decisions and roster moves this season but you take a jab at LD’s character as if he [LD] earned his heading coaching job with the Hawks [perhaps] through “underhanded” dealings. Even, if LD did get his heading coaching position with the Hawks through “unethical” means, what does that say about Rick Sund and the ASG who hired him [LD]?
Again, Buddy Grizzard, you are an excellent writer but you have a tendency to be “skewed” in your analysis/analyses.

People want a beat writer who “likes the Hawks”. Give me a break. I’d rather have one who hates them and goes to any length to tell us when they screw up, so that they keep the pressure on them to get better. That’s how the beat writers in Philly and NY operate.

The Hawks have to decide what to do with their team after their first-round loss to Boston. Expect to hear Joe Johnson’s name linked to trade talks, potentially with the Knicks, among other teams, especially with Mike Woodson coaching the team. Johnson would solve a lot of ills, especially at the defensive end, where he can guard multiple positions. New York finished second to Atlanta when Johnson was free in 2010. It’s just hard to imagine that Hawks ownership would take a shot on Amar’e Stoudemire, with $64 million left on his deal. But never say never
