Atlanta Hawks: NBA admits blown call in Game 6 (plus notes)
9:20 pm May 11, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
The NBA said Marquis Daniels should have been called sooner for fouling Al Horford on an inbound play with 3.1 seconds left in Game 6. If game officials had made the correct call the Hawks, who trailed 81-79 at the time, would have been awarded a free throw and possession of the ball.
The league posted a link with an explanation on one of its official Twitter accounts:
During the last two minutes of the fourth period or overtime, if a personal foul is assessed against the defensive team prior to the ball being released on a throw-in, it is considered an Away-From-The-Play Foul and the offensive team is awarded one free throw and possession of the ball. With 3.1 seconds remaining in the the Boston-Atlanta game last night, a foul was called on the Celtics’ Marquis Daniels after the Hawks’ Marvin Williams had released the ball and therefore the foul was correctly treated as a common foul and not an Away-From-the-Play foul. With that said, however, the replay shows that the foul on Daniels should have been called sooner than it was by the officials, in which case it would have met the requirements of an Away-From-The-Play Foul.
I watched the video numerous times and it’s very close as to whether Daniels was called for a foul before Marvin released the ball. In any event, league spokesman Tim Frank said the rules do not give game officials the option to look at a video replay to determine when the ball is thrown in or when a foul is committed.
Of course there is no recourse for the Hawks, who protested the call during the game. Coach Larry Drew said game officials told him Daniels fouled Horford after Williams released the ball.
“That would have been a huge play, a huge turn of events,” Josh Smith said.
Horford said game officials didn’t offer the players much of an explanation.
“We knew we were on the road and we weren’t going to get anything [and] we were going to have to earn everything we got so it was no surprise they didn’t call the foul earlier,” he said. “He was grabbing me the whole time.”
Notes from exit interview day
- Drew said neither he nor his agent have talked to Hawks management about his contract option for next season. He said he planned to “get away for a few days” before taking up the issue next week.
- Not sure how much there is to the Chris Broussard report linking Rick Sund to the Portland GM opening. Hawks owners have expressed an interest in re-signing Sund but haven’t made a formal offer. Sund has told people he may be interested in a part-time consulting role with the Hawks or another team and also is considering retirement.
- Josh didn’t have much to say about his future, except to repeat “I’m under contract for one more year with the Hawks” and remind media that he could be fined for talking about the reports of his trade request. His trade request still stands for all the reasons I reported before the trade deadline. I’m told another factor that can be added to the list is his desire to play in what he believes to be a better basketball market. But I’m sure you might have inferred that from the way Josh (without prompting) contrasted Boston’s fans with Atlanta’s throughout the series.
- Al said he would resume rehabilitation for his pectoral. “I’m very limited,” he said. “I made a lot of progress in two weeks but I’m about 50 or 60 percent strength.” He reiterated that he didn’t feel comfortable returning before Game 4: “I knew I had a ways to go. Even when I came back, I felt limited. I gave it all I had for the team and for the city. Our city had big expectations for us. It was unfortunate we had a number of injuries and couldn’t do what we wanted.”
- Drew wouldn’t say exactly went wrong on Atlanta’s penultimate possession, which ended with Josh missing a 22-footer, except to say the ball was supposed to go to Joe Johnson. I watched the replay a few times and best I can tell is that Josh was supposed to set a pick to free Joe to cut to the basket or, if Paul Pierce and Brandon Bass switched, end up in the high post against Pierce. However, it looked as if Josh released his screen too soon and stepped out to the perimeter.
- Al on the play: “We drew up a play. I thought it was a pretty good play. I got it and swung it to Josh. Joe, they did a good job denying him, so Josh forced up a tough shot. It didn’t go down.”
- Mike Prada at SB Nation has a different interpretation of the play. He thinks the first option was for Al to feed Josh the ball on the left block. That doesn’t jibe with Drew’s explanation but both could be true considering Drew’s plays have multiple options. Prada also thinks the Celtics got away with a lot of clutching and grabbing on the play. (H/T Jason Walker of Peachtree Hoops).

Joe for Amare is only a good trade because it gets rid of Joe’s contract. I have no interest in building this team around a 30 year old, non-defensive, non-rebounding PF who needs a pass-first PG to create shots for him and has knees so bad that his contract can’t be insured. If the Hawks trade Joe for Amare (which is a good short-term trade for the Knicks) it has to be followed up by trading Amare for someone else or cap space.
*******************
LOL . . . so we may as well nix a Joe for Amare trade then.
With a Smith – Amare – Horford frontline, Smith has to play the role of Scottie Pippen . . . a guy who gives timely offense, but does everything else on the floor. With two traditionally good jumpshooting PF/C like Amare and Horford that can run the floor, Smith could conceivably average 6 – 7 assists a game while scoring 14 – 15 ppg . . . if he would accept that role.
15 ppg
8 rebs
6.5 assists
Hopefully shooting 47%+ FG.
If he were to accept that role, he’d not only make this team better, he’d make the All-Star team.
The issue IS on defense though. Horford doesn’t like guarding centers. Amare doesn’t like guarding anybody. But we might be better offensively. I thought that’s what people wanted around here.

“…It would’ve been Jordan Crawford . . but oops, we traded him. Hey, maybe some of you will get your wish, and Jamal opts not to take the 5 mill, and the Hawks sign him to something like a 3 yr – 12 mill deal. That way, ya’ll ( we ) can root for Jamal again.
Teague
Jamal
Smith
Amare
Horford
Does that lineup get us to the Eastern Conference Finals? Is that a playoff tough squad?” – northcyde
Yaaayyy! I’ll go along with a scenario that brings Jamal back to the Hawks, but a frontcourt of J. Smith, Horford and Stoudemire may clog the paint for the Hawks on the offensive end. Who’s going to be the first, second, third and fourth option [on offense]? I still like Joe Johnson, however, and would hate for the Hawks to lose him [J. Johnson].
*****************
What do you mean “clog the paint”?
Smith will be at SF, and out on the perimeter. That’s where he likes it, so that’s where he’ll be. And I thought that’s where fans wanted him to play. Let Horford and Amare play from 17 feet and in, while Josh plays from 16 -23 feet, with a post up now and then . . and a few fastbreak dunks.
As for who will be the options on offense? That’s easy.
1st option – Jamal: because that’s what he does. He shoots the ball. Even at the 2 alongside Teague, he’ll have the ball in his hands. And since he can create his own shot ( no matter how bad the shot is ), he’ll shoot it.
2nd option – Jamal: As the shot clock is ticking down under 5 seconds, who will shoot the ball? Jamal will. ISO Jamal in effect.
3rd option – Jamal: Even if the play isn’t called for him, he’ll shoot the ball when the ball is passed to him, even if he was supposed to throw an entry pass down to Horford.
Don’t worry about the scoring options. Jamal has all of that covered.
It’s the defense that is the concern.
Jamal vs Dwyane Wade
Jamal vs Joe Johnson ( if traded )
Jamal vs Kobe Bryant
Jamal vs Monta Ellis
But then again, Jamal can do it. He can hold is on on both ends.

Najeh,
That stat (Hawks late-game ) is surprising, as I took a quick count of games we lost in the last minutes (excluding playoffs) and I had a runinng count of about 8 reg. season games we lost by virtue of no “poise at the end” (phrase me and my boys coined in early 90s when battling on early Madden/C-64 “4th and Inches”). Now I didn’t tally how many we pulled out the W on, but we all know which ones we lost late, including 2 vs. BOS, the early season Ls @CHI maybe 2 vs. MIA (the 3 OT vs. MIA minus Wade and Lebron and the last game in MIA where we turned over in the last couple of min), and the 1-point loss to DET.
drmaryb,
Javale might be fortunate he is out of the playoffs … He might need to be home making sure no late-night phone calls or doorbell rings are going down … His mom is *whew*

also, forgot about the DEN loss where Zaza missed the layup. If we hit on half of those late game losses we are the 3-seed. IN fact, if we only hit the layup vs. DEN, win that game @ DET, and if Marvin hit both FTs vs. MIA (rendering Bosh’s eventual game-tying 3-pt. moot), we are the 3 seed as we win the tiebreak w/IND due to head-to-head ….

What a waste of ink begging for help from the NBA. The hawks have got progressively worse since they lets Mike Woodson go.
The coach sucks
The GM Sucks
The Center Sucks
The Blog writer Sucks
This is a Sucked Up team….
You will never ever…..ever win a NBA championship or make it to the finals. With Al “soft and sweet” Houdini Horford as your Center.
Al had All season to rest and recuperate while Josh labored and carried the hawks to the playoffs. Al only played two (2) playoff games and should have been the most rested man in the tournament. He should have been heds and heels over every one else who was worn down from season long labor. Al should have had a spring in his step…
With the huge advantage of being rested the whole season Houdini Al could not even average 20 pts in the playoff. Something Josh and JJ were able to do the entire season. (both right at 20ppg)
Trade Al and stop making excuses for him.
You will never, ever ever win a professional championship with that lazy as Al as your center. TRADE HIM NOW!
Dirk Horford
May 14th, 2012
6:13 am
Smith Already averages 5 or 6 assist. The man is a power forward and much better than Al, who is allergic to defensive and has limited offensive ability. In fact you have to stop the flow of the offense to set Al up because he cant create his own shots.
A better offering Would be to trade Al for Amare straight up. and then you have
Hinrich (or a point guard to be named later)
Teague ( a true 2 guard not a point guard)
JJ (a true small forward)
Josh (A top 3power forward, excellent defender and scorer/assist)
Amare ( a scoring center who will defend and has already punk soft ass Al out)
Get Rid of the Softness!

Really stupid….
Smith as a power forward in the playoffs this season averged 17pts, 13rbs and 5 assists… and you want to move him for an inconsistent Al who after resting the whole season could only muster 15pts 8rbs and 2 assist? kind of reminds me of his normal 12pts, 8rbs numbers.
NO WAY WE MOVE JOSH FROM THE POWER-FORWARD POSITION TO ACCOMMODATE A LESSOR TALENT AND PERFORMER IN DIRK HORFORD.
If you move Josh for Al, and I were Josh. Id demand to be traded.
Michael Cunningham has a replica of Al’s nuttz right above his bed and is planting seeds to make josh request a trade.
Funny both Josh and the owner says they dont know who keeps planting these trade rumors…..

On one hand we and NBA experts rail incessantly about iso Joe and how it sometimes bogs down teh offense, esp. at ends of games, yet …
yesteday a couple of “experts” don’t like IND chances vs. MIA because they lack a true closer in the mode of Jordan/D-Rose/Kobe/’melo (maybe) who can dominate the ball at the end and get a clutch basket.
Now which one is it? The entire NBA has isolation plays, it isn’t just an ATL thing. You see it in the playoffs all the time.
Is it that they don’t feel he is in the class of a Kobe or ‘melo as a scorer (maybe true), or why don’t other teams seemingly not catch as much flack for iso plays?

Shattered Glass!
Amare’ is not a center. We need a center, we already got 4 PF’s if, you count Marvin – who is not a SF that can play in the paint and has proven to be unreliable with his perimeter shooting. The only Center we have is Zaza. Besides Amare needs spinal surgery to go along with those bad knees, hot head and cut up left hand.

From a Charles Barkley interview on 790 last week.
1) Owners need to own, and shut up, especially when you have been one of the most dysfunctional ownership groups in the NBA.
2) Josh Smith is the Hawks best player, but LD has to rein him in. And if he refuses to stop shooting those jumpers, he needs to be benched
3) We are too soft. Our only tough player is Ivan Johnson, but he doesn’t get enough PT
4) LD has done a good job, but the Hawks do not have the right mix of players.

Atlanta is the Washington Generals in the NBA. The NBA could care less about this market, they are after the northeast and LA to keep the company minting money. We are just a convenient way for them to showcase the northeastern teams that play for transplant Atlanta that passes through here with national companies on expense accounts. It is like having hockey in Florida, for the retirees to see their Canadian teams play or northeast teams. It is a good thing for the businesses downtown I guess, but I would think unlike baseball or football most of the suburbanites have that long trek up 400 and don’t sick around very long before or after the games to spend money with the local merchants. We don’t get our feeling hurt too much getting beat by a shacked deck, it is just background noise. Like having a pro wrestling match on while you are concentrating on something else.

Atlanta is a Six Flags Over Georgia franchise, ownership doesn’t matter, unless it is twice as good as the opponents it is just a out post for NBA commercialism. It is like playing with loaded dice, like being invited to some one else s high school reunion. We are even told by the carpetbagger radio sports show host to expect bad calls you are not elite in the NBA, not blue blooded enough to expect an even table. This is not like citizenship to the USA, a privileged that is owed patriotism, this is fake basketball which is losing its credibility here. The NBA owes us we don’t owe the NBA. no one had a comment about my conjecture josh’s immaturity was due to the return of al. didnt it appear in the last game with an ill timed t o and then stopping to argue calls while the play goes on? wasnt he needed in a bad way since it is tough to play four on five against the celts? falling back into old habits was a terrible sign in my opinion and it shows he still doesnt respect the game and each possession, especially important in playoff games.
didnt it all came back to haunt us when al came returned the team and explode with productivity on both ends of the court? is it josh cant stand losing the spot light and is a narcissistic child? was it purely an accident? i dont think so.
josh look at yourself and not the fans in the stands and come up with a way to find a shrink and become an all star based on your credentials, taking the game seriously and not making a mockery of game. coaches dont like that, nor do ex-players and coaches that are tv commentators or announcers because they got there respecting the game. they really hate it when talented people dont. they will point it out every time you do it as well without fail. you make it easy on them, too.
coaches, again i might add, hate folks to do it and will overlook you every time. dont forget, the coaches are going to be the only way to an all start game. it is not talking about poor me, politics and blaming others like a child does. it is all dependent on you playing like a man and not being punked by an old geezer like kg that made you look bad at crunch time, consistently pushing you farther away from the basket to take the shot he wanted you to.

Doc you are dead on. Al has been a champion before, one of the great college teams of this watered down era, but still he had to play to win. All Smithy has had was a class A high school experience and whoops he is a pro. The NBA has ruined college basketball and has no product to sell itself. Josh was probably drafted higher out of college than he would have been as a pro. You expect high schooler to be a little immature, but as he was stunted in college maturity he would have been discovered lacking or better yet would have gotten a coach that made him play team basketball.

JeJe,
I asked a similar ques. somewhere between p. 4-6 on this blog:
If foul was before inbound play, then we should have gotten FT + ball.
If foul was after inbounds play, why no continuation since foul was away from ball, and Josh had beaten KG on a backdoor cut and was 1-uncontested step from a dunk/layup to tie the game? Whistle on the play stopped Smoove’s progress, but KG was toast and someone coming for help D was reaching/flailing. It would have been tie game.
I didn’t notice until the NBA Playoff replay on Sat. afternoon. Not sure what the NBA rules say about the continuation part, but for now…..everybody in Hawks uniform are hangin’ with Bill Dance at the fishin’ hole.
We got double-screwed.
I also think the perception of the team on the receiving end of the bad call (ATL Hawks) has had a direct impact on the collective indifference by the NBA community (fans, analysts, pundits). There would be more outrage if this had happened to one of the traditional powers or a team projected to be in the Conf. finals (OKC, SA, LAL, MIA or even CHI if they had a healthy D-Rose).

So if the Hawks have $61M in salary next season and the salary cap is projected at $58M, then if you amnesty Marvin, it brings you down to about $53M, or provides $5M of salary space. That’s good, but not likely enough to transform the roster. Thyat will require a trade.

Another question/consideration re: inbounds play
From past game-watching of college/NBA since early 80s, for the 5-second count for inbounding the basketball, possession isn’t consumated/confirmed until a player in the field of play actually touches the ball. On some plays, the ball is in the air from the inbounding player and if his teammate in the field of play catches it after the 5-second count, it goes as a turnover to the other.
Now, using this same rationale for gaining possession in the field of play, why was the pass from Marvin to Smoove considered a “consumated” inbound play, when the whistle clearly blew while the ball is in the air and before Josh got his hands on it?
You can’t have it both ways. Either it should be continuation due to Josh catching a legit inbounds play or it should have been an Away-From-the Play foul.
Check the multi-angle replay on the Hawks website in the blog titled “One last What If to ponder?!”

I’m talking about Josh being more of a playmaker for this team, instead of a lead scorer. He likes to pass the ball, and does it pretty well for a big man. Instead of him taking 7 jumpers a game from 16+ feet out, how about only taking 4 jumpers from 16+ feet out, while creating shots for better outside shooters, or for people close to the rim.
With JJ shooting a pitiful 37% FG in the playoffs, and Josh Smith not shooting much better at 39% FG . . the scoring woes are compounded when those two guys have the highest usage % on the team ( Josh – 27.5% usage . . JJ – 25.4% usage ).
Without a true playmaking PG on the team, we need a facilitator. If Josh was given that role, he may see his overall offensive game become more stable, while helping the team as a whole. And with Horford being a much better mid-range shooter than Smith, maybe the solution for this team ( if the Core is brought back ), is to have Josh in a playmaker role.
Here are the people who have averaged 15 ppg – 8 rebs – 6 assists in a season.
Lebron James ( 8 times )
Larry Bird ( 6 )
Scottie Pippen ( 3 )
Wilt Chamberlain ( 2 )
Grant Hill ( 2 )
Detlef Schremph ( 1 )
That’s it.
That’s 4 Hall of Famers . . . Grant Hill ( who will make the Hall of Fame ) . . and Detlef Schremph, who made the All-Star team in the 1 year that he did it.
Idiot? Ummmm . . . you may want to look in the mirror

$61 mil committed to 6 players, and 2 of those 6 are almost untradeable.
Marvin has 2 years, $16 mil left, and JJ has 4 years, $89 mil left. We can blame BK for drafting Marvin over CP3 and Deron, but it is Rick who gave him that extension. Belkin didnt like the deal BK gave JJ in the SNT from Phoenix, but once again, Rick gave him the extension. But it all starts at the top. Ownership.
Melvin,
If the Hawks stay status quo (on the court), they should at least make a change off the court. Bring in an established veteran coach like Jerry Sloan to see if he can change the product on the court. The good thing with a a coach like Sloan, is he will have good assistant coaches. Is anyone impressed by the assistants on LD’s bench (or Woody’s bench when he was here)?
Problem is, LD will make ~$2 mil in the last year of his deal. A guy like Sloan will probably cost closer to $5 mil. That’s a lot of second round picks.

if i read you right, wishful thinking northcyde because of what josh continues to offer between the ears. missed ops, as he went into his two year old tirade, cuts him from the pack you are trying to put him into. he aint there yet if ever. it is time to try to find someone to take him for something to balance out this team ala what denver did with melo. i dont want to do the miami or cleveland thang.
i say get something for josh if you can. unless, and this is a clear incentive and what i fear them doing, this ownership is going to use josh as its excuse for doing nothing as usual to get nothing and blame him for not coming back instead of being proactive and this is the kicker drop payroll to save money insted of selling second rounders or giving away firsts. it is being run like the back end of the phoenix suns time as relevant. i know that would be a very novel idea for this ownership group who only have been proactive in getting into the courts. really, they should have traded jj for some pieces and parts before they allowed themselves to hang his contract around their necks like an albatross.

I think Joe can be moved. The Wolves have already come out and said they dont want anymore young players and would prefer a veteran. Dirk is asking the Mavs to get another scorer. There are options to move Joe but is the front office willing to shake up the core. The Hawks could probably get a late lotto pick for Josh but once again is the front office willing to shake up this core. Ive read rumors about Detroit wanting Josh. There may be a few teams who are willing to trade their lotto pick for a proven player like Josh rather than wait on the potential of a guy in the draft. I also read that the Bobcats might be willing to move their pick if they dont end up with the first overall pick. There are options to make some changes to this roster but it all comes down to if this front office wants to break up the core or keep everything intact.

Melvin, if Josh wants to be traded because the front office dissed him and/or he wants a more enthusiastic fan base, then short of Josh dictating new owners and a new fans…
I don’t think this thing can be orchestrated based on “who should be punished first”. Let’s punish Marvin first. Then, let’s punish Joe. IMO, 2 captains need to get gone and the order of their departure is insignificant.
Lastly, not every player even considers a trade as some type of NBA version of being put into TO. My guess is that every Hawk other than Joe would greatly benefit from being with a new team. Said differently, they will all surely put up better stats with another team. They may not be in the playoffs or enjoy the same team success, but their individual stats will surely improve. Instead of looking at trades as a way of punishing existing players, we should look at it as a way to get a better roster (either immediately or within 1-2 seasons).
