Hawks co-owner Michael Gearon Jr. was the featured speaker today at the Third Annual Art of It Luncheon at the Piedmont Park Conservancy. The event is sponsored by the W.E.B. Du Bois Society, an Atlanta-based nonprofit that is “focused on bridging the academic gap that exists between African-American students and their white and Asian peers.”
The AJC’s D. Orlando Ledbetter was at the event and reported the following Hawks-related highlights from Gearon’s speech.
On media coverage of Hawks’ playoff series against the Celtics
“Did you see what Al Horford did last night? The timeline for recovery for his injury is another three months. He’s not even supposed to be playing and Josh [Smith] should not be playing. Zaza [Pachulia] can’t stand up, but if we can get past this round there is a chance that we can get him back. So this is a team that is overcoming adversity. I wish . . . some of the national media or even some of the local media, more the paper than the TV guys, recognize how hard these guys are playing based on how injured they are.
“On top of all that, we don’t get any calls, which I know everybody always hears. But I’ll give you a stat. Last night, we are playing this old physical team. They are old. I know what happens when you play basketball, old guys foul. [Kevin] Garnett is the dirtiest guy in the league. We are playing Boston last night and they had two fouls the whole first half. We had five times that and we’re athletic.”
On the Hawks’ injuries
“Derrick Rose goes down and the No. 1 seed is playing the No. 8 seed and everybody is like, ‘Chicago is down 3-1, that’s what you should expect with Derrick Rose down.’ Well, we’ve been playing these playoffs without Zaza, without Al Horford and Josh Smith should not be playing. Our center is Erick Dampier, God bless his heart, but he looks like a granddad. (laughter) He’s a great guy. It’s difficult enough to win a playoff series, but when you lose your whole frontline and nobody ever says, ‘Gee, you are out playing with guys that are hurt.’”
On Josh Smith and his Atlanta roots
“We wouldn’t be where we are without him. The tough thing for our team, I’m a lifelong Atlantian. I was born here. I lived the first 25 years of my life within two miles of where I was born. Right there near Piedmont Hospital. I moved to Cobb County back in 1994 when my Dad convinced me to buy a little house . . . . But the thing about our team, and it’s tough in every city. . . but when you look at the Atlanta Hawks and you know it’s tough.”

Not only is Kevin Garnett dirty, but the entire Celtic team plays like COWARDS. But now that we have our “BRICK WALL” back (Al Horford)–there will be no layups coming into the paint from opposing players. In games 1-4, boston players kept driving the basketball inside to the rim and slaming home dunks. Not anymore since Big Al returned. I just cant wait to see Thursdays game when the hawks go to boston and beat the Celtics. The two guys who saved our season last night was Marvin Williams (who finally justified us picking him #1), and Big Al Horford, who sealed Rondo off at the past and refused to let him inside. Rondo had to spin out of control and retreat like a cow spun out of the pasture. Normally Marvin is completely unproductive and usually gives us nothing, but last night he was like the reincarnation of Pistol Pete Maravich and we couldnt shut off his jump shot because he kept raining 3s all night!

If the Hawks don’t win this series the Heat will cake walk to the finals. Gearon is right about one thing. We are doing well considering we don’t have a single healthy nba caliber big. If we were healthy we’d win this series convincingly.

Gearon’s right about one thing – the Celtics have been allowed to play much more physical without fouls being called on them – Teague gets mauled going to hoop with no call, constant hacking arms to strip not called.
Look at the foul-shot difference – home or away. The NBA and TV networks want Boston the advance, it appears based on the officiating difference in what constitutes a foul between the 2 teams.

FTPB,
Northcyde,
I agree that everything adds up, but you earn most of your money in crunch time (see Tim Tebow
), not during the second quarter.
That may work for Marvin, who is a role player, but that’s not enough from our $20 mil all-star captain.
Nobody wants to talk about a baseball hitter hitting a HR in the 3rd inning. It’s what did in the late innings, and in the bottom of the ninth, game on the line, against the other team’s closer.
Don’t tell me about the TD that the QB had in the second quarter. It’s what he did executing the 2 min drill with the game on the line.
And JJ was a no-show, and non-factor in the second half (imo). Which makes it even more baffling that with the game on the line, LD goes to iso-Joe.

And while I agree with Gearon’s comments (Hawks dont get calls, and KG is a dirty player), I wish he had stuck to the “Hawks not getting any calls” theme.

Hey yawl, Josh Smith just retweeted me again today. First was around 457pm ish last Sunday in Boston, pre game 4. I really do think Josh reads our blogs because, I’ve had a twitter account for over a year but, never knew how to use it.
I did my first tweet last week and, was following Josh for about an hour and, then he started following me instantly. Today, Josh retweeted me again a few hours ago, he only follows 814 people and has 58,912 following him. That’s why I think he reads our blog and probably has seen me on here.
I knew Jamal read us daily, but I didn’t know if any other players did or not. I think they do. Now, I wonder is Sund reads us, or the Gearon, Jr’s? LOL

It may sound like whining but there is a lot of truth in what Mike Gearon, Jr. is saying. I have tremendous respect for Kevin Garnett, however if you watch the game closely you will see where Garnett will try a cheap shot, especially in his screens. It is commonplace throughout the Association, where a player will test an opposing player’s injury just to see if it is still a problem. Gearon’s point regarding the Hawks’ injuries and their fortitude to compete through them should be applauded in the same vein as any other team on a national and local level. Check out new website http://www.atlantasportreport.com for a different point of view.

Trade Josh Smith: I agree with you wholeheartedly. Look at what Josh Smith did last night–sure he scored a lot of points and grabbed a lot of rebounds–but is basketball IQ is about -977 in the way that he just lollypoped the inbounds pass into Rondo, WITH OUR ENTIRE SEASON HANGING IN THE BALANCE and was content to just throw it away. I watched josh after that play–he was so deflated he turned around and didnt even hustle back on the play to defend it. He casually walked down the court as if he was a 98 year old man AND COULDNT CARE LESS ABOUT HE OUTCOME OF THE GAME. Josh Smith should be cut from the team–dont worry about trading him because Im sure nobody wants him.

I am so sick of the fans here at times and the mass media, Charles Barkley and the TNT crew!!!!! There coverage of the Hawks sucks. They hardly watch the Hawks and they are in Atlanta. The thing that hurts me most is that we as fans give them a pass and in our frustration continue to tear down our players as well. There is no way that Barkley or KS would abuse a NY or Philly team in the city. They would probably get harrassed and harragued until they stopped. Are the Hawks perfect, Absolutely Not!!! But have they been successful the last 4 years, They Absolutely Have!!! Fans stop complaining and enjoy their accomplishments!!!!! I have been a fan of the Hawks all my life(Dan Roundfield, Charlie Criss, Dominique, Mookie, Steve S on up) and the fact is this team had performed just as good or better than any of them. I wish the fans of ATL would be more ride or die. Gearon does make good points and contrary to popular belief this is a solid team. Compare them to any team in the league and how they performed in the playoffs. The truth is that not many have performed comparable to the Hawks. Do I what them to win a championship? Absolutely!!! Do I thinks Management has made some bonehead moves? Without question!!!! Did they overpay JJ? Probably so!!! Have the Hawks been successful since his acquisition and have they succeeded against all odds? Unequivocally!!! So mainstream media and ATL print media along with pseudo fans, Shut up!!!

He might be right, but no owner needs to say any player on another team is a dirty player. Just keep your mouth shut.

Why does every blog deteriorate into a bash josh party? The guy routinely puts up 20-10 nights. Always among the leaders in blocks. Gets steals and assists. So he takes a couple more jumpers than people might like. He is NOT what is wrong with the Hawks. Quite frankly, when healthy, I don’t think there’s much wrong at all. Sund did a great job adding depth during the lockout, when no one could predict how things would go for any team. They played solid all year, with plenty of games lost to injury. I absolutely agree that the league would rather have boston win and the resulting officiating fiasco is a crying shame. This Hawks team should dispatch the aging celts.

The Hawks have played hurt all year and still have succeeded. No Horford all year, but Drew is still a bad coach. Before JJ we couldn’t even win 20 games and now we win 40 in 66. The Knicks got All star and headline players and barely made the playoffs. Dallas won the championship last year and are out in the 1st round and barely won the playoffs. Avery got the Nets and a great player like Deron Williams and there at home. The Hawks have played 4 seasons without a real center and have made it out of the 1st round 3 years in a row but according to CB and KS on TNT they don’t play hard. First it was ISO Joe and now the team averages 22 assists a game but they don’t move the ball. Shaq got the nerve to talk but wouldn’t sign with the Hawks, goes to Boston and is a Shell of himself. He wanted the easy ring. Boston with 3 bigtime stars and only 1 championship to show for it. The year our Hawks took them 7 games. I am sick of nobody defending the Hawks and continuing to complain. Every sports writer in the country serenading Boston and besides game 4 they have been fortunate to say the least with a depleted Hawks team. You JJ haters won’t even give him the credit he deserves for his performance in game 3. So what, he makes a lot of money!!! That’s done and over with now. Get over it or find another team. Its not your money. I like to look at the facts and the facts are that the Hawks are a better team this year, mostly because of Teague and Josh’s improvement. If you blow up the Hawks, who knows what will happen. My point is, they are not to shabby right now.

Celtics can’t convert late opportunity
ATLANTA — Celtics coach Doc Rivers lamented his team’s execution down the stretch of Tuesday’s 87-86 loss to the Hawks in Game 5 of an Eastern Conference quarterfinal series at Philips Arena. A couple of his grievances:
* After Paul Pierce missed a 20-foot jumper with 18.9 seconds remaining, the Celtics were slow to foul, particularly frustrating to Rivers because the team still had one to give. Ray Allen finally gave it with 10.9 seconds to go, but Boston wasted valuable time trying to go fort a steal.
“We signaled to foul, but our guys decided to go for a steal first,” said Rivers. “What they didn’t understand was that we had a foul to give. I told them after the game — we talk about it every night and every day in practice — end-of-the-game execution is going to win or lose playoff games for you. You think about it, that’s 7 extra seconds that (Rajon) Rondo would have had (for a final shot attempt). That doesn’t mean we make a shot, but you never know. We would have had extra time, and we didn’t have it.”
* Despite that initial miscue, the Celtics still gave themselves an opportunity to win the game when Rondo swiped the inbounds pass intended for Joe Johnson. But without a timeout, Rondo had no choice but to rush up the floor. With Josh Smith defending, he came off a pick-and-roll with Kevin Garnett, but the Hawks switched him to Al Horford, who cut Rondo off from trying to drive baseline. As Rondo tried to dribble back out towards the arc, he lost control of the ball and couldn’t poke it to Garnett, the clock running out as Smith tipped the ball away.
“We were in a jumble,” Rivers said. “I wish (Rondo) had went down the middle of the floor, I think you should always go down the middle of the floor, especially when have a big on you. Listen, it’s a turnover, it’s a fast break — we were just trying to go. I thought Kevin set a nice step-up pick; I was hoping he would attack the basket. But really, I just thought he lost the ball and that threw off any chance we had.
“(Rondo) made the play though, a terrific defensive play. We told him in the timeout, the guy they are going to throw the ball to is Joe Johnson, clearly, and they did and we got the steal, but we didn’t capitalize on it.”
Rondo said of his missed opportunity, “I tried to make a play, but got caught on the baseline. Give Al credit. I just didn’t come up with the shot.”
Pierce added, “They defended it pretty well. (Rondo) came off the pick-and-roll, they switched and then cut off the baseline. At the end of the day, he gave us a chance. We were put in a situation where we were probably going to have to foul and maybe go down 3, but he got the steal, gave us an opportunity. Unfortunately, we turned it over. Sometimes it goes like that.
“We definitely squandered away an opportunity today, but you take your hats off to the Hawks, they came with a purpose today. It’s a make-or-miss league, we had our opportunities down the stretch, they played with a lot of energy, a lot of pride with their backs against the wall and won a close one.”
From the Hawks perspective, even coach Larry Drew admitted to just being happy to escaping with the win.
“My heart was racing 100 miles per hour on that last sequence,” said Drew. “We put our best free throw shooters in the game, but we didn’t make a smart play inbounding the ball. I’m glad (Smith) had the presence of mind on the last play to step up on Rondo when he came flying up the court. We were forced into a switch, and Al stepped up and took the ball. Rondo tried to turn the corner, but Al forced him back and then Josh deflected the ball. You’re forced to make switches in those type of last-second situations.”
Said Horford: “I didn’t want to lose the series that way, so I didn’t want to let Rondo shoot a jumper over me. You’re fighting for your life out there.”

We are a back up pg and center away from a championship!!!! The Hawks healthy all year with JT, JJ, JSmoove at SM, Horford at PF and Zaza at center. Hinrich, Marvin, Mcgrady, Ivan and WG coming of the bench. They could make a deep run without injuries, less isolation, during lag times on OFF draw fouls and consistent effort.

His comments about KG just stripped any outside chance the Hawks had to win game 6. This will be bulletin board material in Boston and the Celtics will come out fighting. Nice move Gearon. Put the team up for sale……wait, it already is.

Did you see Marvin “clothes line” Bass in the paint, before the half? Then he came out to start the third & apologized to Bass? Zaza would have stepped on Bass neck with his good foot, pizzed on his head like a GI in Iraq and then, just walk away – Like it Never even happened.
That’s what this team is amiss! Zaza and for the love of Basketball, unleash Ivan – just one good time! But, you know Drew won’t do that, he’s to cool for “The Crazy.”

That’s what I thought Bostonfan…..Ray Allen is hurt and that’s it. Pierce would make a great soccer player being that he is such a queen. Like most soccer players, when there is contact they just flop around on the field like they have a broken leg until the ball comes back their way and then they get up and sprint towards the ball (very Paul Pierce like)!!! These people talk about whining. I have never heard the bellyaching as when the hockey team left town. 40% of the people watching the Hawks in person last night were Boston fans. You got grown men and women dress up looking like green Leprechauns or wearing Boston jerseys, lifeless people showing up at our place for a fix and these classless vagabonds are telling Michael Gearon who sponsors their sickness at a loss to buck up. They should be thanking MG like a drug user thanks a dealer, or better yet like a addict thanks a facilitator. This highway 400 crowd worships this stuff to the point of mania yet have judgement on a man presenting them the product. Lets play a little college football, the one sport the northern sport fan can’t take our players and call them their own, and beat us with them. So much talent is grown down here it has almost ruin the sport in the northeast. And I can take my daughter and wives to a college football game because the little green painted Yankee lunatics can’t get in, we keep all those tickets for ourselves. A very pleasant atmosphere for family gatherings.

Yeah let’s just trade Josh Smith away Now here’s the question who you going to replace him with?????
Dwight Howard that’s his best friend
Deron Williams Dallas going after him plus he lead the league in TO’s
Taj Gibson not even on Josh’s level
T. Prince…………old
Who else is there look the only way you get rid of Josh is if you get someone like Kevin Love, Kevin Durant, or people like that back for him. That’s how much I value Josh Smith to this franchise.
Dude is a game changer, but yet y’all want to get rid of him if we get rid of either of the two (Josh or Al) might as well blow it up Atlanta Hawks will be sent into another Dark Age for a long time.
I hope you don’t expect Marvin or Joe to save us yeah Marvin had a good game yesterday what about the other 54 that he didn’t? Same thing can be said about Joe excuse me Mr. Choke Max Johnson.
We all get onto Josh about shooting those jumpers, but thing is those jumpers don’t hurt us as much as Marvin being invisible or Joe going into the Iso-Joe mode. I also wish Josh would calm down a tad on the jumpers when they aren’t falling, but thing is he’s also won games that way too. Josh is a legit NBA All-star maybe not superstar yet, but that’s only because we don’t MARKET HIM or anyone else for that matter.

Boston isn’t going to get called for fouls if we continue to settle for jumpers and fallaways. Go inside and attack their weak C Garnett. He isn’t going to get in foul trouble….there is no depth.
NOTE to Gearon: Have you even discussed this with league officials? Are you too busy to back your team to the league and let them know we aren’t going to be quiet until things are impartial?
Give this team the resources it needs to be a championship contender and get out of the way.
Congrats to DMB being acknowledged by Josh as a supporter. He is the guts of this team and wouldn’t it be special for this group to finally climb that hurdle and do the ‘impossible’?
That is where this group is right now. They have to make a statement to the Celtics, to the league and to the fans. We aren’t going home!

So what happens if we lose tomorrow? If you blow up the team you’re to where you were in the late 90s. People know Josh Smith is in his last year next year and they can sign him then or if Atlanta’s Brass are like some of fans just trade him for anything. Where does that put us? Amnesty Joe, trade Marvin. What do you think potential free agents are going to think? As much as you all don’t agree, those guys I mentioned have value and when you get rid of guys like that what makes you think a new head coach is going to want to come here? New Players? Just blowing up a team isn’t going to do it. Our problem is lack of consistency not talent. I could see a new head coach down the road maybe.

Trade Josh Smith
Obviously Paul W and TJS are not watching the same Josh Smith that I have seen, basically all season long. Josh Smith overall basketball game has improved tremendously. He is shooting a nice 15 foot jumper, (sometimes a little further out) rebounding the ball, filling the wing on fast breaks, passing the ball into teammates cutting to the basket (when they move without the ball), going to the low post and scoring, and blocking shots. Points per game same as JJ, leads NBA in rebounding, and can get the crowd into the game with his above the rim play. Josh is the Hawks MVP. Certainly not Joe Johnson. To all Hawk fans: Hawks Shock the World and beat Boston on Thursday night.

They aren’t when Joe is on the court the offense slows to a stop and we just watch this one guy do something for about 24 seconds, and once it hits 10 seconds then the other guys got to scramble to get a shot up.

For all of those asking, “if we blow it up, who do we replace JJ, Smooove, etc. with?” Probably nobody. Doesn’t matter. Its reached the point that I don’t like the Hawk players. Especially Smooove. If I see him one more time in a critical point in a game get a rebound, wave off the guard, dribble the length of the court, only to dribble it off his knee or shoot a dribble/drive 25 footer off the backboard….well. Let’s just say, I would rather watch bad players give it all they have and play team BB than watch this bunch. BTW There is a reason Smooove hasn’t been picked as an all-star. He doesn’t deserve it. Talented, but selfish, not a team player. Everybody in the NBA sees this. No contending team wants him. JJ would be a nice addition to a contender as a #3 man.
Ray

Wow you say selfish I’ve never seen the guy pull an Iso play seems like he’s always directing people where to go most of the time.
Smoove should have been an All-star this year and the year before last even most of the analyst have said he was snubbed twice this year was big time.
JJ wouldn’t even be on a contending team especially after all these things they see and hear about him our best bet to get rid of Joe is a team our west probably Golden St. or Portland.
Josh actually has better BB IQ then most people give him credit for there are some boneheaded plays he does, but I’ve seen far worse.

I never said smooove had low BB IQ. I think he’s pretty smart, which makes his boneheaded plays all the more infuriating. When he feels its time to score some points, he doesn’t take in consideration the point in the game or what’s best for the team. As for JJ, if he doesn’t have to lead or carry the weight, he can be very effective as a #3 or off the bench for a contending team.

Eb the reason you can buy tickets is because southerners just don’t care about the atmosphere surrounding a NBA game. Our lives unlike yours would not be off one day if we didn’t have this sport dictated by northern demand, and put down south because of carpetbaggers migrating down here. The reason the press is so anti Hawks is it can afford to be, most of the fans down here are not Hawk fans they are fans of the towns they escaped from, New York, Philly, Boston. No one gets mad when the Hawks are put down because there is no lost capital doing so. The press can have a field day on a Mike Gearon because there is no real grass root support here for the Atlanta Hawks, it is a theater for northern entertainment.
You won’t see such “courage” shown when it come to something that has popularity down here like Georgia Bulldog football. You let the press scratch that surface and you will have a riot. As far as most Atlanta or state of Georgia people are concern about pro basketball or hockey, it is just like the airport, people passing through.

Josh Smith should be cut from the team–dont worry about trading him because Im sure nobody

Joe does slow down the game. He dribbles back and forth, waste time, then passes the ball cross court without anytime left on the shot clock. Joe said he wanted more touches than he got in game 4. Only problem, when you feed Joe the ball the above scenaro occurs. Joe does not want to take the shot. He will drive to within 5 feet of the basket and kick the ball out to Josh 20 feet away with 5 second left on the clock.” Here Josh, you take this shot. I don’t want the fans mad at me when I miss, but they expect you to miss.” Be a leader Joe. Take the team on your shoulders and will them to a victory like Carmelo did, like Pierce did in game 2, (hate using his name as an example – but it is the truth) like Al did in game 5.

I absolutely hate Kevin Garnett. He is always picking on players half his size and running his mouth all season long. I hate te Celtics too, because they feel a sense of entitlement like they are royalty, Paul Pierce is as soft as they come and apparently goes down with career ending injuries every fourth game, Rajon Rando is a piece of garbage that has produced for maybe three seasons but thinks he’s Michael Jordan, and Garnett is always near the top of the list by players as a very dirty player. I bet he wouldn’t pull half that crap with someone 6′9 or bigger, or even someone 6′5 that has a little weight on him. I sure hope the Hawks bounce back and destroy the Celtics and their season.

While not a newbie, I don’t post much in Hawks blogs during the season because the non-national games are blacked out where I live, and it’s not worth it to me to pay for or stream regular season games.
When the playoffs start I get more interested and involved. I once was a Hawks season ticket holder during the John Drew / Koncack years when I lived in Atlanta. Those teams were much worse than this one.
While agreeing that controversial calls have been few in this series, what is considered a foul has been quite different between the teams in my opinion. And LD does not work the refs at all, just takes what he gets, it appears most of the time.

I am so sick of the fans here at times and the mass media . . . Are the Hawks perfect, Absolutely Not!!! But have they been successful the last 4 years, They Absolutely Have!!! Fans stop complaining and enjoy their accomplishments!!!!! I have been a fan of the Hawks all my life(Dan Roundfield, Charlie Criss, Dominique, Mookie, Steve S on up) and the fact is this team had performed just as good or better than any of them . . . Gearon does make good points and contrary to popular belief this is a solid team. Compare them to any team in the league and how they performed in the playoffs. The truth is that not many have performed comparable to the Hawks.
_______________________
You certainly have a strange definition of success. They’ve never beaten more than 1 team in any year they made the playoffs since their arrival here 44 years ago, and you’re happy with that?!
“Compare them to any team in the league and how they performed in the playoffs. The truth is that not many have performed comparable to the Hawks.”
You also have a convoluted definition of “not many.” How many teams have made it past Round 2 of the playoffs since 1968? That’s how many have not only “performed comparable to the Hawks”–but have actually exceeded them.
Homerism is blind.

Under Rivers Boston is 2-9 in game 5 when up 3-1 in a series. Game 6 will be a much bigger challenge for the Hawks. Al Horford will be much closer guarded meaning Johnson and Smith will have to make their shots from the outside. They will need to come through in crunch time because you can bet that Paul Pierce will.

Mike Woodson is well on his way to another double digit loss in the road. Currently down 19 in the 4th. No way he gets the Knicks HC job. All 4 losses will be by double digits (and I know Knicks have been injured). But Woody’s playoff record is too terrible.
I think Woody deserves some of the blame for JJ being the player he is. It was his iso-Joe dominated offense that got JJ playing this way. But watching the Knicks, I think Woody just does not know how to coach offense.
Guys are standing around, no ball movement, no balance, and Carmelo has taken 26 shots, Amare 7.
And for this series, Carmelo is averaging 23+ FGA per game, shooting 40% from the field, 15% from 3. .

@GT: you mean like the strength of GT football in the South? Stadium is 75% full for most games. Strength of ACC basketball in the South? Last I checked GT has been dealing with half empty arenas for years now. Oh, Paul Hewitt set things back with the team? Well so did ASG with the Hawks. Listen, I’ve lived in ATL my entire life and have season tickets to other teams in town not named the Hawks. While this is not historically a big basketball town, neither were we a baseball town until the Braves run of the early 1990’s. Bottom line is the ASG are running this team into the ground when the only chance basketball has to survive in ATL is to win a title. 43 years and counting………

Drew is not in control of this team….isn’t it obvious? He defends whatever actions take place out there. No one is held accountable and the players are running the show. That’s why they wanted LD to take over. They don’t want someone telling them how to play. They make the same mistakes over and over, and LD will only rotate the role players to mix it up and say changes were made.
Good win, and a slim win, but again, like every game, we have no clue which team is showing up. The head coach has no clue who is showing up. ” CO-Sign!

This will go 7 games and the Celtics will then win. Not because they’re better, but because they play in a bigger TV market; the Northeast. It happens every year. In the end, it will be the Lakers vs the Celtics so the NBA can make millions more on the TV and ad revenue from both coasts. This stuff is all predetermined before the 1st whistle of the 1st game of the season.

It is OK to call out players,in professional sports you try to get every edge that is part of it.If the refs. are tainted well that is another story, that is why I go to bots for reffing I think it is the only fair way. There is so much money in professional sports it could have it own stock market, it does Las Vegas and people make a lot of money on it that is why pro sports is so popular, along with the fact it keeps all of us following this instead of all of the other problems in the world.Damn I should start my own blog NOT

I agree with Gearon, but his timing sucks. KG bearhugged and grabbed Al’s arm on that last inbounds play. The play’s design looked awful from the get go, but once KG mauled Al there weren’t any other options for Josh before 5sec was up.
The Josh-bashers need to give it up and GTFO. Dude’s the heart of this team that is otherwise sorely lacking it (Al’s fire was GREAT last night, but that was more reminiscent of his rookie season than his last, unfortunately). It’s got to be frustrating for Josh to play in the shadow of a max-contract player who looks like he could care less while playing for another coach who spews excuses and can’t draw up a play to save his life. I’d be scowling, too. In a better market and/or under a polished coach, he’d be a much bigger name and multiple all-star.

Has anyone who has posted even watched any of the games? If you did, you would realize the Celtics have had more foul shots because the Hawks playoff foul them every time the Celtics have a guaranteed basket. On the other side, however, the Celtics give up the easy baskets, trying to preserve their fouls. The difference is simply one team not allowing an easy dunk and the other allowing it so their players won’t foul out.

So what game did they cost you exactly? Cuz the Celtics never won by fewer than 2 possessions. You can’t count the OT game cuz the Celtics had that in the bag and just stepped off a bit. If it was closer, Celtics wouldn’t have done the same and still would have won. If you want to talk about refs taking a game, then why aren’t you talking about the 3 missed goaltendings last game that was decided by 1 point.

From espn new york;
Negotiations or no negotiations, Woodson desperately wants to keep his job, and the Knicks are seriously considering him as their long-term guy.
Asked Tuesday if he believes he has done enough to earn a contract, Woodson said, “Hey, I went 53-29 in Atlanta and was out of a job. I don’t look at it that way..
dmb,
Both melo and Amare have endorsed Woody. From an article on May 8.
ANTHONY: “Absolutely, absolutely. If they’re going to do it right now or if they’re going to wait until after the season, I’d love to see him back. I support that. Everybody knows what he’s done thus far since he’s been here in this short period that he’s had the head coaching job. There’s no need to cut it off right now. We’re kind of just getting started.”
STOUDEMIRE: “We had a great run so far. I think it’s something that we can build on for sure. I know as players, we all love his philosophy on both ends of the court. He has a good understanding and we all get along very well, so it’ll be great to build something solid sooner than later.” .

From Bill Simmons’ latest column:
“Remember, a basketball team follows the lead of its coach and its best players. They have to be in synch or everything falls apart like it’s the end of a Jenga commercial. That’s why the Spurs never go away — because Gregg Popovich and Tim Duncan built something that transcends the grind of any season. That’s why the Lakers never cave — because Kobe’s teammates are petrified to let him down. That’s why the Celtics never folded before the 2012 deadline — because Doc Rivers, Rajon Rondo and the vets had built too much collective pride to get submarined by rumors and hearsay. That’s why Miami ebbs and flows depending on the moment — because their best player (and the league’s best player, by far) can’t totally decide what he wants to be.”

Obie, thanks for taking the time to pull those quotes together, I didn’t know the guys said that on Woodson’s behalf. I’m glad he has gotten a second chance, this time with an established roster. I especially liked the dig Woodson, tossed in there re:
“Asked Tuesday if he believes he has done enough to earn a contract, Woodson said, “Hey, I went 53-29 in Atlanta and was out of a job. I don’t look at it that way..”

Who said that?
“Our center is Erick Dampier, God bless his heart, but he looks like a granddad. (laughter) He’s a great guy.”
________
Ouch! Gearon, Jr was wrong for saying this about his employee to the media. There has to be something more constructive that could have been put out there. First of all, Eric is not our center – Collins is. Secondly, my grandma told me to ask yourself three questions before you say something controversial:
Is it true?
Is it kind?
Is it necessary?
If the answer is not “yes” to all three questions, then, put your fist in your mouth! (don’t say it). HaHa, now I will be the first to admit, at times on this blog … I throw my Grandmamma of the train and come out “tongue swinging”. Sometimes, cussing people out lowers your blood pressure and, that can be quite healthy.
But Gearon, Jr. stepped over the line with that comment. If he don’t like the groceries … then stop bagging up stuff from the The Dollar’s Tree “bargain bin’s”. Stop humping the sides of the 4×4x4 cardboard boxes.

OB,
All that love for the “gunner” must be put to bed “pronto”.
Rod said that the Knicks would be very dangerous when they hired JR Smith and look at what he gave them…
Virtually nothing but bad shots. I grant that missing their PGs played a factor, but the fact is that all that “instant offense” was reduced to the numbers you posted.
Defense and rebounding wins championships, not guys who shoot the rock with 20 seconds still on the clock.
Rod,
Bringing those Jamal highlights of a REGULAR SEASON GAME – which you always dismiss as not being important in comparison with the playoffs – against a much weaker MIA team is a JOKE.
Jamal was very good last year against a decaying ORL team which we had already figured out and then had ONE good game against CHI.
Heck, we had already beat ORL in the regular season without Jamal last year and this year again we beat them without Jamal by simply implementing the most basic strategy: defend Howard one on one with a big body and close the 3 point line.
I am all for having players who can create their own shot, but if they are one dimensional, they must be used criteriously.
I even think that it would be good to have Jamal on this roster, BUT NOT WITH LD COACHING.
Jamal would have to be reigned in and used in three ways, exclusively:
- short spurts, as the focal point of the offense and quickly replaced if his shot was not going in (2 misses – OUT) with the possibility of being brought back again for a new test later in the game.
- during scoring droughts:
a) as the guy who would receive the rock with the expiring clock to try and make the off-balance, tricky dribble pull up shot (meaning, that he would not get to shoot unless the set offense had stalled and went nowhere).
b) with some ISO plays given to him.
This last double option would replace Josh as the guy to whom JJ usually dumps the rock when his ISO goes nowhere, which unfortunately against playoff teams is very frequent, or ISO JJ all together (being in this case JJ the guy to whom Jamal would dump the rock if his ISO was going nowhere.

Not wanting to run him away, but if u feel comfortable asking him this, could u ask him why he finds it hard to throw the ball to Teague? Not only after he gets the rebound but once he gets over the half court. He will look for everyone and anybody else b4 he decides to throw to Teague..not sure why tho. Its not like Teague is a TO waiting to happen or a bad decision maker. I really would just like to know..thx in advance, girl!!

Also to MC,
I like your articles and your responds but lately, it seems like you have something against Joe Johnson and now the Hawks organization. I say this cause its obvious, Joe is NOT your favorite ball player but I find it hard to find anything good in an article that basically calls Joe out at the WRONG TIME. It had all of TNT and ESPN talking down to Joe about his comments’ about not getting enough touches. And im sure the players wasnt too happy about it also. And because of the pressure b4 that game, Joe looked rushed or scared to even go to the hole. Horford gave him a perfect pass toward the goal but decides to throw the ball BACK OUT to non other than Josh for another missed opportunity to score.
Now this latest article about a Hawks’ owner who by-the-way, is correct on what he is saying about the Hawks, but again, u posted an article like this at the WRONG TIME. What good it going to come out of an article like this heading INTO Boston, a place where KG can catch all kind of fire from Gearon’s comment, for the Hawks? Not sure what your motives are but could we have the old Micheal Cunningham back PLEASE, cause this new MC is starting to cause all kind of havoc. Thx!

selfish players that don’t play any defense. Remember our players were injured when this series started and currently Pierce, Steimsma, Bradley and Allen are hampered by nagging injuries as well.
I do appreciate Horford courage and grit but it’s “too little to l;ate”. This series is over! Stick a fork in the Hawks! Maybe next year after they blow-up this mismatched team they will improve to win a playoff series. Unfortunity they will be going on vacation after tonight!

Rod,
If we remove the game in which we did not play any D, we are 2-2 with the wins going to the team which rebounded better.
The Hawks did outrebound BOS on the game that we folded, but it does not take a rocket scientist to determine that:
- if don’t play D, your opponent will shoot a higher percentage, so there will be less defensive rebounds, so the team losing may end up with more rebounds, in particular since the winning team will not break their necks nor ankles to try and snatch rebounds in traffic when it is not necessary;

Rod,
On the subject of JR Smith, are you saying that his bad shots are a result of not having quality PGs on the floor?
Isn’t JR supposed to be a gunner, a create-his-own-shot guy?
Now that he crashes and burns in the playoffs against good defense (like ALL one dimensional gunners do) he is supposed to be a catch and shoot guy, dependent of good PG play?
Wasn’t the gunner concept all around guys who could revive teams from the death imposed by strong D’s who break up normal half court plays and make the ISO-free-wheeling players essential??

You’re right, we won’t get foul calls if we don’t drive to basket but a lot of times the jump shots are taken because we aren’t getting the calls as we drive to the basket.”
Take the ball and shove it down KG’s throat until you get a call! Quit throwing up last second jumpers wasting possessions. Stop with the 5 guy quicksand offense…its awful basketball!
Just like Woody, LD will never fix that iso mode we go into……never!
We’re not going to get calls like Boston…why is this new? I saw a guy on the Bulls last night grab a ball, and slide across the floor….result? Traveling? NO! Pass out to Deng and hit a 3 pointer.
These refs are telling you to earn a play…we’re not bailing you out.
You can’t control the refs, you have to overcome the refs. This is nothing new. We’re going to Boston and we have to win.
NOTE to Gearon or the minion you have reading this blog….just stay quiet. When you and your GM talk, it just infuriates us Hawk fans. You aren’t helping the team with your antics.
Off or on the record, just don’t talk. Enjoy your speaker engagements and just write a book or something….don’t kill your team’s last chance in Boston!
And for the guy who said we’re all just glad to see Al back and everyone is happy? Well, aren’t you tired of seeing Jason Collins getting a starting nod when he doesn’t deserve it? Kinda like the trials of Marvin……he gives you nothing in 20 minutes and LD rewards him?
These are reasons why we don’t stand behind this coach/GM/ownership. Can you imagine what T-Mac is thinking? Ivan? Just get me the HAIL out of Atlanta if possible. Both deserve better than they’re getting.

Rod,
A day we will never forget
On August 6, 2009. From ajc.com;
All speculation was removed earlier today as the Hawks announce the re-signing of the 23-year-old forward. The team didn’t release the terms of the new deal, but it is believed to be a five-year, $37.5 million contract that could increase to as much as $43 million with incentives..
Williams, selected by the Hawks with the second pick in the 2005 NBA draft, averaged 13.9 points and 6.3 rebounds last season, but he missed the last month-and-a-half of the regular season with a back injury before he returned for the playoffs.
“Marvin is an important part of our core, and we’re very pleased to keep him in a Hawks uniform,” Hawks executive vice president/general manager Rick Sund said in a statement. “A big priority this summer was to retain as many of our free agents as possible and keep our nucleus intact, so Marvin’s return is significant for us.”
Williams said he never could envision playing somewhere else, not with seven of the top eight players returning from a team that won 47 games, finished fourth in the Eastern Conference and advanced to the second round of the playoffs.
“We’ve all grown together,” Williams said. “The one thing you hardly ever see in professional sports is that loyalty and teams staying together. When you do see it, like in San Antonio or Detroit when they kept their core guys together, you see championships..
“I think that’s everybody’s goal here. We’ve all started off together young in this league, and if we get a chance to grow old together, I think we can do some pretty special things.” .

THE REASON WHY JOSH SMITH HAS A HIGHER BASE SALARY THAN LEBRON JAMES IS FOR TWO REASONS. #1 JOSH SMITH HAS A BETTER AGENT THAN LABRON JAMES AND #2: JOSH SMITH HAS MORE NATURAL TALENT AND ABILITY THAN LABRON JAMES AND IS MORE OF A CLUTCH PLAYER THAN LABRON. LaBron had two Cleveland Caviler teams that won 61 and 66 games respectively and had the best records in the entire league–than LaBron CHOKED in the playoffs and couldnt hit the clutch shot when his teams needed him to. When LaBron lost to the Orlando Magic, Labron stormed off the court without shaking anyone’s hands from the Orlando organization and refused to do post-game interviews. LaBron is a spoiled brat and will NEVER WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. I would rather have Josh Smith on my team instead of LaBron because for all the bonehead plays that Josh makes, at least Josh is a winner and knows how to make clutch plays in the clutch, of course thats not counting the inbounds throw-away pass to Rajon Rondo.

OB, what possibly could the incentives be for Marvin to add $6M to that gawd awful date in Atlanta history? Voted more professional by his peers?
That tops the Koncak deal 10X over.
Let me refresh that memorable day:
” in 1989 the Hawks resigned him to a six-year contract worth $13 million. As soon as he signed the deal, he was officially making more than Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson. If that wasn’t enough, his large contract also prevented the Hawks from taking part in any other major free agent signings for several years. And you wonder why the Atlanta Hawks have never won an NBA Championship. The Koncak signing would be exhibit A.”
It is said that history does repeat itself…..courtesy of Rick Sund and the ASG. No flex salary space going forward.
And to top it off, Koncak had his SMU college jersey retired in ‘08.

My answer: NO, that’s not what im saying but this is, “I find it hard to find anything good in an article that basically calls Joe out at the WRONG TIME”. Notice the CAPITAL LETTERS..WRONG TIME!
You said: “I think you are really making excuses for him if you blame the media for his bad play in the playoffs”.
I say: Again I say, NO, not making excuses for him either. Hay, at the end of the day, he is a human with human reactions to such negativity based on his salary and NOW based on comments IM sure he was feeling at the time that, in the future, need to be kelp to himself since he wont be able to trust writers who post things that should have been kelp between the walls of Phillips Arena locker room. Even though it took him awhile, LD finally did 3 of the things I said he had to do in order for us to have a chance of winning this series. First, he put his personal issues aside and benched an unproductive Hinrich and Twin.At this point, Hinrich is a role player, not a starter. Secondly, he accepted that Dampier is a better player than Twin and gave him the extended PT he deserves.
And thirdly, he moved JJ to SG, where Bradley nor any of their other guards were able to handle him in the post. LD needs to come up with a plan to get the ball out of PPierce’s hands. KG is a jumpshooter, and we should wear him down and force him beat us.

If you, Gearon, Jr want to emulate Mark Cuban? Do like him, sit behind the team’s bench home and away and, yell obscenities at the refs LIVE and in PERSON. Catch a fine and, maybe your team will take it inside, draw contact and, get some fouls called. Help your team that way.

Please don’t remind me. I knew then that it would be one of the worse moves the fanchise could make. I put it up there with John Konkack, and Speedy Claxton. Joe is bad, but he does produce, and at least I can understand it. Marvin, not so much. He did step up last game, though. Hopefully he can continue to hit wide open shots, because I can assure you that he will be left open.

Idk why so many ahve a problem about this? Is about damn time someone that owns this teams says something. I hate quiet owners which for the most part he’s been but if he is finally going to say something I say its about damn time. Its not like he’s lying either. On Espn All I see is poor chicago because they don’t ahve their two best players. SO what. Oh amare’s not healthy boo hoo. So damn what. I’ve been watching them all year. Injuries has whipped this team’s behind all year and we are still in the playoffs. We have a chance to atleast force it to atlanta and all we do is get dogged on tv.I don’t care if they have a point or not but the hawks look like every other play off team but they seem to be the only one that gets flak instead of respect. Shoot if none of us can get a pull for and if no one in the media outside of AJC is gonna say this then it might as well be him.
The Hawks are winning tonight. I don’t care how much you don’t gearon and i’m right there with you but how the hell do you dislike a word he said there. Come on man. Yall fools got me shaking my head.

“Same #Hawks starters for GM 6 vs. #Celtics: Teague, Johnson, Williams, Smith, Horford.”
Another LD hunch….but don’t expect what Marvin gave us in Game 6.
I hope LD has another hunch in not depending on the bench all of a sudden. Just keep our starters (except Marvelous) out there even if they’re tired. They shouldn’t feel tired in an elimination game.

2 Live Stews!
“The 2 Live Stews’ show has now been merged into a show with Tony Barnhart and Wes Durham and others. Or something like that. I was told Monday’s show included Hans Heiserer, one of the fill-ins on the station, along with Ryan and Doug Stewart.
The Stews’ agent Norm Schrutt acknowledged he wasn’t thrilled by this arrangement, which dilutes an already shrinking Stews brand on the station. But he said the brothers are “team players” and are doing what they are told. And after getting their hours cut from three hours to two last year, they do get to be on air for three hours a day again. The Stews have already been dialed back significantly since the new program director Bob Richards took over last year.”
_________
I knew something was up last week, when I heard Doug & Ryan of (11 – 12 years past) on 790 The Zone Radio at 11AM with other people. I just saw this article that explains, they lost heir show to attrition it seems. Now it’s called The Red Zone, with a round table that does not highlight the brothers.
No more 2 Live Stews! (all right … all right … all right) No more feeling “Stu-Pendous!” or, so it seems.

Marvin Williams SHOULD BE GETTING A HUGE RAISE for his brilliant shooting last game! Marvin, for one day in his life, shot the ball like the reincarnation of “Pistol” Pete Maravich with Marvins deadly three-point shooting in the last game against Boston, which lifted the Hawks and kept their title hopes alive of winning an NBA championship this season. Marvin shot the ball like the Pistol, and kept firing until he helped his team win a critical game–ALTHOUGH JOSH SMITH TRIED TO GIVE THE GAME BACK TO THE CELTICS ON THE FINAL PLAY OF THE GAME!

Gearon needs to shut up, he’s the one (at least one of them) that decided to pay a fade away jump shooting, “And 1″ dribbling, softy $20 million. Hey Gearon, your team doesn’t get any respect because the league itself lost respect for the Franchise after it witness that contract. So blame yourself and your partners for not getting those fouls called.

KG will dominate the paint and force Hawks on sagging down low with Ray and Paul being set up for and easy jumpshot, like i say if LD over play his starters like game 5 look for a game 6 blow out, bench will play and important role in tonight game.
Collins and Dampier will be need in this game keeping KG away from the paint alowing everybody else to stay with there man and not double down low, Horford and Josh are not capable on keeping KG from the paint, so look for Doc to feed KG down low tonight when Horford and Josh are guarding him.

Ms.Dee,
I respect your passion for the Hawks and Joe but this is the playoffs. The stage is bigger and every word is magnified. This is where Superstars are made. You can’t make the money that Joe is making and expect to go unnoticed. You are not going to sneak up/surprise anyone for a victory. Either you rise to the occasion or shrink. In saying all of that, Joe needs to step up or be bash for it. He’s not the only player being criticize for bad play.

Boston is a jumshooting team with only 1 low post present in KG, if you can man up with one player then you have a chance, The Hawks beat Magic last year because of the big lineup and Collins keeping Superman from dominating the paint with with 1 – 1 guarding alowing the Hawks to stay perimeter defensively making it very hard for Magic players to have open jumshots, tonight will be the key on keeping KG from the paint for and Hawks victory.

Bodies on Bigs
“There’s no doubt that in order to grab this win, Kevin Garnett, Brandon Bass and every other big man on Boston’s roster will need to get their bodies into Smith and Horford on every single shot attempt. The C’s cannot afford to be dominated on the glass again.”
These Hawks are Different
“The Hawks’ lineup changes dramatically with Horford on the floor, which alters the way Boston plays defense. In prior games, when Jason Collins or Erick Dampier were playing center, the C’s could toss Bass or any reserve big man on those players while Garnett defended Smith. That can’t happen now with Horford on the floor. Boston needs Garnett, the team’s best rebounder, to be matched up with Horford.”
Riled Up Rondo
“The Celtics cannot afford to have Rondo show up for one of the two halves tonight. They need him to be the dominant force he can be for every minute he’s on the floor.”

“Rod,
On the subject of JR Smith, are you saying that his bad shots are a result of not having quality PGs on the floor?”
No, I saying a good point guard will usually get his team better shots. JR Smith simply missed shots that he should make, and The Knicks played Woody ball. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the Knicks played much better basketball when Jeremy Lin was not injured.
“Now that he crashes and burns in the playoffs against good defense (like ALL one dimensional gunners do) he is supposed to be a catch and shoot guy, dependent of good PG play?”
So based on your premise that all one dimensional gunners crash and burn in the playoffs why did Carmelo not crash and burn? I seem to remember Dominique having great games in the playoffs. You make youself look dumber everytime you post.

As I’ve said all series, take the ball to the goal and go get the fouls called…..that goes for you too Marvin. You are the perfect example of us not attacking the basket enough.
I like our chances, but you can’t let Rondo survey the territory. Make him make a decision quick and foul him if you have to….he is a weak FT link. Don’t give him easy buckets/assists. If he is a triple/double threat tonight, we got no chance.

Since this Hawk team doesn’t have great players, conventional wisdom suggests they lose tonight by a better more focused team who best understood the magnitude of the moment. The bookies got the Celtics winning by 6.5, the largest margin of victory among the 3 games played tonight.
But what may not be factored into this prediction is Al Horford. He has changed the dynamics of the Hawks and could alter the expected outcome of this game, perhaps even the series. However, the real juggernaut for the Hawks may not be the players (Josh Smith, JJ or Marvin etc.) but the coach, LD.
A test of his growth as a coach will be how well he counters the adjustments Doc Rivers will make against him. Will he show the Celtics the same look as game 5 or will he show them something new? What will he do when the Celtics unleash their answer to the addition of Al Horford? Will he stay the course, replaying game 5 script, wearing his starters out with a tight rotation or is there a plan for something different?
Game preparation is not only about the players but a coaching effort as well. We shall see if LD is up to the task or is he still learning to be a Jedi Knight.

The best of times and the worst of times. The best of times was Marvin’s contributions last game. The worst of times will be Marvin hovering around the “3″ line waiting to jack it up.

So we trying to trade a Iso player for another Iso player, but this Iso guy can’t play defense and also sometimes refuses to play defense??????
Then we want to Amnesty Josh or Joe which both are retarded ideas even I’ve backed away from Amnestying Joe after awhile.
Why Amnesty Josh??? When he’s going into his last year yep it’s a good thing most people in the world aren’t CEO’s of big time companies or else everyday you wake up another one would fall LOL!
No matter what let us dump off Marvin he is the real issue when it comes to that amnesty the only way we get rid of Joe is buying him out which won’t happen now.
