Not only is Kevin Garnett dirty, but the entire Celtic team plays like COWARDS. But now that we have our “BRICK WALL” back (Al Horford)–there will be no layups coming into the paint from opposing players. In games 1-4, boston players kept driving the basketball inside to the rim and slaming home dunks. Not anymore since Big Al returned. I just cant wait to see Thursdays game when the hawks go to boston and beat the Celtics. The two guys who saved our season last night was Marvin Williams (who finally justified us picking him #1), and Big Al Horford, who sealed Rondo off at the past and refused to let him inside. Rondo had to spin out of control and retreat like a cow spun out of the pasture. Normally Marvin is completely unproductive and usually gives us nothing, but last night he was like the reincarnation of Pistol Pete Maravich and we couldnt shut off his jump shot because he kept raining 3s all night!

Gearon’s right about one thing – the Celtics have been allowed to play much more physical without fouls being called on them – Teague gets mauled going to hoop with no call, constant hacking arms to strip not called.
Look at the foul-shot difference – home or away. The NBA and TV networks want Boston the advance, it appears based on the officiating difference in what constitutes a foul between the 2 teams.

And while I agree with Gearon’s comments (Hawks dont get calls, and KG is a dirty player), I wish he had stuck to the “Hawks not getting any calls” theme.

Because the Celtics and their fans will be fired up tomorrow night. It reminds me of when Bibby called out the Celtics fans back in ‘08, and we go up there and get waxed all 4 games.

It may sound like whining but there is a lot of truth in what Mike Gearon, Jr. is saying. I have tremendous respect for Kevin Garnett, however if you watch the game closely you will see where Garnett will try a cheap shot, especially in his screens. It is commonplace throughout the Association, where a player will test an opposing player’s injury just to see if it is still a problem. Gearon’s point regarding the Hawks’ injuries and their fortitude to compete through them should be applauded in the same vein as any other team on a national and local level. Trade Josh Smith: I agree with you wholeheartedly. Look at what Josh Smith did last night–sure he scored a lot of points and grabbed a lot of rebounds–but is basketball IQ is about -977 in the way that he just lollypoped the inbounds pass into Rondo, WITH OUR ENTIRE SEASON HANGING IN THE BALANCE and was content to just throw it away. I watched josh after that play–he was so deflated he turned around and didnt even hustle back on the play to defend it. He casually walked down the court as if he was a 98 year old man AND COULDNT CARE LESS ABOUT HE OUTCOME OF THE GAME. Josh Smith should be cut from the team–dont worry about trading him because Im sure nobody wants him.

He is in FACT the superstar of this team! I don’t want him traded and I don’t want him to request a trade. I love the guy! Your comments are asinine. Yes he made a mistake throwing the ball in but he was not hustling due to his injury. He carried us this season!! Enough said!

Sund always says, “I don’t read the papers.” i’m sure he was lying. I agree with you, they probably do, but I wasn’t sure. MC doesn’t even read the blog anymore. I don’t think he likes his blog people like he used to. Mark Bradley actually holds long conversations with his followers.

I thought MC would at least engage us a little during these playoffs. They must not be getting paid enough granolas to bother. All MC do is tweet. I’m following him and Sekou and Brandon Leak as of last week and, MC tweeted to me, “drmaryb, I’ve never seen you on twitter before!”.

That was the last shout out from him I ever got. Sometimes, we feel like we are talking to ourselves, and many bloggers on here have awesome points of views, trade ideas and comments about how to make this team perform better. But, no one cares what we fans think it seems.

I am so sick of the fans here at times and the mass media, Charles Barkley and the TNT crew!!!!! There coverage of the Hawks sucks. They hardly watch the Hawks and they are in Atlanta. The thing that hurts me most is that we as fans give them a pass and in our frustration continue to tear down our players as well. There is no way that Barkley or KS would abuse a NY or Philly team in the city. They would probably get harrassed and harragued until they stopped. Are the Hawks perfect, Absolutely Not!!! But have they been successful the last 4 years, They Absolutely Have!!! Fans stop complaining and enjoy their accomplishments!!!!! I have been a fan of the Hawks all my life(Dan Roundfield, Charlie Criss, Dominique, Mookie, Steve S on up) and the fact is this team had performed just as good or better than any of them. I wish the fans of ATL would be more ride or die. Gearon does make good points and contrary to popular belief this is a solid team. Compare them to any team in the league and how they performed in the playoffs. The truth is that not many have performed comparable to the Hawks. Do I what them to win a championship? Absolutely!!! Do I thinks Management has made some bonehead moves? Without question!!!! Did they overpay JJ? Probably so!!! Have the Hawks been successful since his acquisition and have they succeeded against all odds? Unequivocally!!! So mainstream media and ATL print media along with pseudo fans, Shut up!!!

He is the biggest drama queen ever. He is a great player but a attention and drama queen nonetheless!!

The Celtics are garbage and will be watching the Finals along with everyone else. Hope they stock up on plenty of wine and cheese in the meantime!!!

Why does every blog deteriorate into a bash josh party? The guy routinely puts up 20-10 nights. Always among the leaders in blocks. Gets steals and assists. So he takes a couple more jumpers than people might like. He is NOT what is wrong with the Hawks. Quite frankly, when healthy, I don’t think there’s much wrong at all. Sund did a great job adding depth during the lockout, when no one could predict how things would go for any team. They played solid all year, with plenty of games lost to injury. I absolutely agree that the league would rather have boston win and the resulting officiating fiasco is a crying shame. This Hawks team should dispatch the aging celts.

Celtics can’t convert late opportunity

ATLANTA — Celtics coach Doc Rivers lamented his team’s execution down the stretch of Tuesday’s 87-86 loss to the Hawks in Game 5 of an Eastern Conference quarterfinal series at Philips Arena. A couple of his grievances:

* After Paul Pierce missed a 20-foot jumper with 18.9 seconds remaining, the Celtics were slow to foul, particularly frustrating to Rivers because the team still had one to give. Ray Allen finally gave it with 10.9 seconds to go, but Boston wasted valuable time trying to go fort a steal.

“We signaled to foul, but our guys decided to go for a steal first,” said Rivers. “What they didn’t understand was that we had a foul to give. I told them after the game — we talk about it every night and every day in practice — end-of-the-game execution is going to win or lose playoff games for you. You think about it, that’s 7 extra seconds that (Rajon) Rondo would have had (for a final shot attempt). That doesn’t mean we make a shot, but you never know. We would have had extra time, and we didn’t have it.”

* Despite that initial miscue, the Celtics still gave themselves an opportunity to win the game when Rondo swiped the inbounds pass intended for Joe Johnson. But without a timeout, Rondo had no choice but to rush up the floor. With Josh Smith defending, he came off a pick-and-roll with Kevin Garnett, but the Hawks switched him to Al Horford, who cut Rondo off from trying to drive baseline. As Rondo tried to dribble back out towards the arc, he lost control of the ball and couldn’t poke it to Garnett, the clock running out as Smith tipped the ball away.

“We were in a jumble,” Rivers said. “I wish (Rondo) had went down the middle of the floor, I think you should always go down the middle of the floor, especially when have a big on you. Listen, it’s a turnover, it’s a fast break — we were just trying to go. I thought Kevin set a nice step-up pick; I was hoping he would attack the basket. But really, I just thought he lost the ball and that threw off any chance we had.

“(Rondo) made the play though, a terrific defensive play. We told him in the timeout, the guy they are going to throw the ball to is Joe Johnson, clearly, and they did and we got the steal, but we didn’t capitalize on it.”

Rondo said of his missed opportunity, “I tried to make a play, but got caught on the baseline. Give Al credit. I just didn’t come up with the shot.”

Pierce added, “They defended it pretty well. (Rondo) came off the pick-and-roll, they switched and then cut off the baseline. At the end of the day, he gave us a chance. We were put in a situation where we were probably going to have to foul and maybe go down 3, but he got the steal, gave us an opportunity. Unfortunately, we turned it over. Sometimes it goes like that.

“We definitely squandered away an opportunity today, but you take your hats off to the Hawks, they came with a purpose today. It’s a make-or-miss league, we had our opportunities down the stretch, they played with a lot of energy, a lot of pride with their backs against the wall and won a close one.”

From the Hawks perspective, even coach Larry Drew admitted to just being happy to escaping with the win.

“My heart was racing 100 miles per hour on that last sequence,” said Drew. “We put our best free throw shooters in the game, but we didn’t make a smart play inbounding the ball. I’m glad (Smith) had the presence of mind on the last play to step up on Rondo when he came flying up the court. We were forced into a switch, and Al stepped up and took the ball. Rondo tried to turn the corner, but Al forced him back and then Josh deflected the ball. You’re forced to make switches in those type of last-second situations.”

Said Horford: “I didn’t want to lose the series that way, so I didn’t want to let Rondo shoot a jumper over me. You’re fighting for your life out there.”

These people talk about whining. I have never heard the bellyaching as when the hockey team left town. 40% of the people watching the Hawks in person last night were Boston fans. You got grown men and women dress up looking like green Leprechauns or wearing Boston jerseys, lifeless people showing up at our place for a fix and these classless vagabonds are telling Michael Gearon who sponsors their sickness at a loss to buck up. They should be thanking MG like a drug user thanks a dealer, or better yet like a addict thanks a facilitator. We all get onto Josh about shooting those jumpers, but thing is those jumpers don’t hurt us as much as Marvin being invisible or Joe going into the Iso-Joe mode. I also wish Josh would calm down a tad on the jumpers when they aren’t falling, but thing is he’s also won games that way too. Josh is a legit NBA All-star maybe not superstar yet, but that’s only because we don’t MARKET HIM or anyone else for that matter.

So what happens if we lose tomorrow? If you blow up the team you’re to where you were in the late 90s. People know Josh Smith is in his last year next year and they can sign him then or if Atlanta’s Brass are like some of fans just trade him for anything. Where does that put us? Amnesty Joe, trade Marvin. What do you think potential free agents are going to think? As much as you all don’t agree, those guys I mentioned have value and when you get rid of guys like that what makes you think a new head coach is going to want to come here? New Players? Funny, but I commented to my brother during the game last night that this has been the best officiated playoff series I’ve ever watched. Not once has there been a controversial call. A pretty mean feat. I haven’t even noticed the officiating, which is a good thing. Boston gets more fouls, because they drive the lane. The Hawks settle for jumpers.

Hearing Gearon speak leaves no doubt why this ownership group is the laughingstock of the NBA and formely the NHL. Burn in hell Mike for what you did to the Thrashers. Until you sell the team, we will never attract the elite players or achieve anything significant. They will lose by 20+ in Boston and you will have some tough decisions and an ever shrinking fanbase.

For all of those asking, “if we blow it up, who do we replace JJ, Smooove, etc. with?” Probably nobody. Doesn’t matter. Its reached the point that I don’t like the Hawk players. Especially Smooove. If I see him one more time in a critical point in a game get a rebound, wave off the guard, dribble the length of the court, only to dribble it off his knee or shoot a dribble/drive 25 footer off the backboard….well. Let’s just say, I would rather watch bad players give it all they have and play team BB than watch this bunch. BTW There is a reason Smooove hasn’t been picked as an all-star. He doesn’t deserve it. Talented, but selfish, not a team player. Everybody in the NBA sees this. No contending team wants him. JJ would be a nice addition to a contender as a #3 man.

I never said smooove had low BB IQ. I think he’s pretty smart, which makes his boneheaded plays all the more infuriating. When he feels its time to score some points, he doesn’t take in consideration the point in the game or what’s best for the team. As for JJ, if he doesn’t have to lead or carry the weight, he can be very effective as a #3 or off the bench for a contending team.

core group of past…Josh, Marvin, jj, Horford….new core group…Josh, Horford, Teague, and ZAZA!….Johnson should be traded while we can get somebody decent back or we should just amnesty the guy…the Lakers, Portland, Dallas, could all use a skilled second line scorer like johnson…he is allergic to the lane…but in a system that already has a main guy, he would be deadly…as the leader for the hawks he is all wrong and holding us back….turn the team over to Horford and Josh, get a capable 2 guard(shoulda kept Jamal) and we can get past the second round…keep johnson for the remainder of his contract and watch him crash and burn and pout in the 1st round of the playoffs for years to come…

Joe does slow down the game. He dribbles back and forth, waste time, then passes the ball cross court without anytime left on the shot clock. Joe said he wanted more touches than he got in game 4. Only problem, when you feed Joe the ball the above scenaro occurs. Joe does not want to take the shot. He will drive to within 5 feet of the basket and kick the ball out to Josh 20 feet away with 5 second left on the clock.” Here Josh, you take this shot. I don’t want the fans mad at me when I miss, but they expect you to miss.” Be a leader Joe. Take the team on your shoulders and will them to a victory like Carmelo did, like Pierce did in game 2, (hate using his name as an example – but it is the truth) like Al did in game 5.

While not a newbie, I don’t post much in Hawks blogs during the season because the non-national games are blacked out where I live, and it’s not worth it to me to pay for or stream regular season games.

When the playoffs start I get more interested and involved. I once was a Hawks season ticket holder during the John Drew / Koncack years when I lived in Atlanta. Those teams were much worse than this one.

While agreeing that controversial calls have been few in this series, what is considered a foul has been quite different between the teams in my opinion. And LD does not work the refs at all, just takes what he gets, it appears most of the time.

Are we frustrated with the hawks because we feel that they should be playing like a championship team? DEFINITELY! Last I checked GT has been dealing with half empty arenas for years now. Oh, Paul Hewitt set things back with the team? Well so did ASG with the Hawks. While this is not historically a big basketball town, neither were we a baseball town until the Braves run of the early 1990’s. Has anyone who has posted even watched any of the games? If you did, you would realize the Celtics have had more foul shots because the Hawks playoff foul them every time the Celtics have a guaranteed basket. On the other side, however, the Celtics give up the easy baskets, trying to preserve their fouls. The difference is simply one team not allowing an easy dunk and the other allowing it so their players won’t foul out.

Josh Smith is the only athlete I’ve ever seen who is the best and worst player on the team at the same time.

One second he looks like LeBron, the next he is throwing one-handed in-bound passes to a teammate covered by 2 players -Grandmaster-

Game 4: 3-15 (20%)

Wow. The Hawks complain about having injured players that can still play. We lost two people to the same bizarre heart injury. Losing Jermaine O’Neal wasn’t necessarily a surprise but losing Wilcox and Green to the same season ending heart surgery hurt. I like how no one remembers that.

I think you are really making excuses for him if you blame the media for his bad play in the playoffs. This is not the first playoffs where Joe hasn’t step up his game or play at his same regular season level. looks like we were right, Zaza had an osteochondral defect in that left ankle. The bone fractured and he walked around on it without a boot for almost three weeks, except for the first two days.

A missed diagnosis which led to a missed opportunity to properly treat. We should have shipped Zaza to the Phoenix Suns medical staff for treatment. LOL There is no excuse to miss on the Zaza injury.

2 Live Stews!

“The 2 Live Stews’ show has now been merged into a show with Tony Barnhart and Wes Durham and others. Or something like that. I was told Monday’s show included Hans Heiserer, one of the fill-ins on the station, along with Ryan and Doug Stewart.

The Stews’ agent Norm Schrutt acknowledged he wasn’t thrilled by this arrangement, which dilutes an already shrinking Stews brand on the station. But he said the brothers are “team players” and are doing what they are told. And after getting their hours cut from three hours to two last year, they do get to be on air for three hours a day again. The Stews have already been dialed back significantly since the new program director Bob Richards took over last year.”

I knew something was up last week, when I heard Doug & Ryan of (11 – 12 years past) on 790 The Zone Radio at 11AM with other people. I just saw this article that explains, they lost heir show to attrition it seems. Now it’s called The Red Zone, with a round table that does not highlight the brothers.

No more 2 Live Stews! (all right … all right … all right) No more feeling “Stu-Pendous!” or, so it seems.

Marvin Williams SHOULD BE GETTING A HUGE RAISE for his brilliant shooting last game! Marvin, for one day in his life, shot the ball like the reincarnation of “Pistol” Pete Maravich with Marvins deadly three-point shooting in the last game against Boston, which lifted the Hawks and kept their title hopes alive of winning an NBA championship this season. KG will dominate the paint and force Hawks on sagging down low with Ray and Paul being set up for and easy jumpshot, like i say if LD over play his starters like game 5 look for a game 6 blow out, bench will play and important role in tonight game.

Collins and Dampier will be need in this game keeping KG away from the paint alowing everybody else to stay with there man and not double down low, Horford and Josh are not capable on keeping KG from the paint, so look for Doc to feed KG down low tonight when Horford and Josh are guarding him.

Boston is a jumshooting team with only 1 low post present in KG, if you can man up with one player then you have a chance, The Hawks beat Magic last year because of the big lineup and Collins keeping Superman from dominating the paint with with 1 – 1 guarding alowing the Hawks to stay perimeter defensively making it very hard for Magic players to have open jumshots, tonight will be the key on keeping KG from the paint for and Hawks victory.

People over at Bleacherreport going in on why the hawks need to rid themselves of Marvin more or less what this blog has been saying all along.

I could get the same production Marvin has been giving me from T-mac or Willie Green yes I said (Willie). They don’t even make as much as Marvin either not even close lol.

Can Gearon and the rest of them up there just go on ahead and admit Marvin is a complete Bust everyone else has and I think North Carolina is a bit upset with how much of a bust he is lol.

DONT GET RID OF JOSH SMITH…johnson is the problem with chemistry and leadership…Celtics fans are not gonna get rid of rondo everytime he does something dumb…he’s to good to do that, and so is josh….johnson has to go…send him to the clippers,lakers,dallas, etc and get some scoring help back. Horford and Josh should be leading this team….johnson is not a leader…his time in atlanta is over…amnesty the guy or trade him!

Agreed. The timing was questionable at best. Not only provides excellent bulletin board material, but sets the team up for even more national disrespect; i.e., Steven A Smith’s disparaging remarks this morning on espn–that bastion of journalistic integrity.

Is Marvin Williams a starter or a role player? One reason Kirk got the start was because Marvin was giving them nothing in the starting lineup, but was producing in a bench role.

Big Dog,

Amare has 3 years, $60 mil left on his deal. Which wouldnt be so bad, except he has bad knees. And his contract is not insured. So if we trade for him, and he gets hurt, we would not get any insurance money, but would still be on the hook for his salary.

BTW,, as the starting PF last night, Amare was still outrebounded by Mike Bibby. You must be thinking about the old Amare.

I’m predicting a battle of the benches tonight. Neither bench has done much this series… while we have a better bench, we also know that Avery Bradley, Marquis Daniel and even Dolling have the ability to score 8+ points… which would be HUGE in this series. I think we may need 20+ points from our bench to pull out this road win… and I think that we will get it tonight.

Its time to take the game to Pierce and see if he can hold up against the pressure offense.
As I’ve said all series, take the ball to the goal and go get the fouls called…..that goes for you too Marvin. You are the perfect example of us not attacking the basket enough.

I like our chances, but you can’t let Rondo survey the territory. Make him make a decision quick and foul him if you have to….he is a weak FT link. Don’t give him easy buckets/assists. If he is a triple/double threat tonight, we got no chance.
