Atlanta Hawks at Celtics Game 4: Game thread

BostonJosh Smith is testing his left knee pregame but said he will play tonight after no setbacks during this morning’s shootaround. He plans to wear a brace during the game. “When the adrenalin kicks in I probably won’t feel it,” he said. “I’ve just got to go out there and not even think about it. Play hard, play the way I’m capable of playing and not worry about re-injuring it.”

  • Josh said if the Hawks were up 2-1 instead of down “I would probably be more cautious with the decision. But this is a must-win game for us tonight.”
  • Larry Drew on Smith’s movement at shootaround: “Once he loosened up he looked pretty good.”
  • Tracy McGrady (ankle) said he’s fine: “I feel great. I’m not worried about it.”
  • Al Horford (pectoral) warmed up before the game and decided he feels good enough to be put on the active list. The Hawks say he’s a game-time decision.
  • Drew said he would monitor Josh and T-Mac’s minutes: “I will certainly try to keep an eye on their minutes and we will use them accordingly depending on what the matchups are. If we get into a situation where we have to play one or two gys extra minutes, then so be it. We are in the fourth game of the playoffs and we want to put our best foot forward and play as well as we can and put ourselves in position to win.”
  • Drew on playing without Josh: “Without him, we lose a big part of what we’ve been. He’s a guy that, now, down in the low block he commands double teams. He plays out of double teams really well, he’s an extremely good passer, he gives us stability defensively. We just miss his leadership out on the court.”
  • Jeff Teague has been the most efficient shooter for the Hawks in this series, (non-Erick Dampier category) but he’s fourth in usage percentage. Teague’s 16.5 points per 36 minutes are second to Josh Smith (17.1).
  • Drew wants Teague to be more aggressive offensively late in games even if his number isn’t called. Teague’s chances in the halfcourt still will have to come by playing off of Joe and Josh. Drew said Teague is the No. 2 option in those situations when Josh is not on the court; with Josh in the lineup tonight, Teague presumably slides back down to third in the pecking order.
  • “When we get into that stretch run, particularly not having Josh, obviously we are gong to go through Joe a lot and I know they are going to keep a couple guys around him at all time with double teams and making sure he can’t get away,” Drew said. “But when Joe does give that basketball up, and that ball is swung out to Jeff, we need him to be in aggressive mode. You can’t be passive at that point because the shot clock is winding down and he is probably the only one on the floor that has that break-the-defense-down type speed. We just need him to be aggressive and be smart with his decisions.”
  • Drew on Teague playing off Joe and Josh: “He’s growing. You can definitely see where he’s starting to understand how to play off those guys and how to get those guys involved. He’s not going to be perfect at it because he’s a scoring point guard. But he has gotten so much better in that area. The one thing is I want him to continue to be himself and stay aggressive and staying in that attack mode and just allow his natural instincts to come out.”
  • Avery Bradley (shoulder) is a go for the Celtics.

Good to see that Josh recognizes that this is a must win game.

With that being the case, it is not an elimination game, and I don’t think the situation is desperate enough to rush Al back.

I hope he’s actually ready to go. If the Hawks advance, they will need a healthy Al. The last thing they need is for him to aggravate the injury.

Mike Woodson coaching his ass off. They just gave Bibby credit for being a master of the 3 over his PLAYOFF CAREER.

Al is a master of disappearing in the playoffs…. Im giving him credit.

Id rather have Zaza and Ivan than Al. You get the same amount of points rebound as Al, by starting Zaza but more heart and fighting to protect the rim.

Al is trade bait.

“Two sources close to the hiring process have confirmed to FanHouse’s Sam Amick that Drew will in fact become the Hawks’ next head coach, and that his contract will be for two guaranteed years between $1.2 and $1.3 million per year. That will make Drew the lowest paid coach in the league, supplanting Sacramento’s Paul Westphal ($1.5 million per year next season).”

Hawks just have to wake up, hike up their defensive effort, stop turning the ball over, run their offence, and it’s over yet. But if they continue to play with such lethargy, they get blown out tonight.

Boston cannot continue to shoot so well. But Joe needs to come out of his funk, and just play basketball. Stop dribbling the ball into a crowd of four defenders!

Ray Allen has 8.
Fooling has 6.
Bradley has 5.

Greg and Garnett only came together for 11 points.

How does Ivan change that?

Al has the best plus/minus. The problem is the Gaurds and substitutions. Ray Allen guarded by Joe? Rondo guarded by Pargo? Only thing I see wrong is LD’s stupidity and lack of guard play.

Look, I like Ivan’s game & what’s he’s contributed this season, but how can you deny that h’e’s been no match for Garnett? How can you deny that he’s given us nothing this series? If I’m Drew & Al says he’s ready, I’ll take my chances on bringing in a guy that I’m sure will give me the 4 rebounds per game I got from Ivan & likely more points all day. I guarantee Al will give us more than Ivan’s 4 boards & 4 points tonight.

DHunt

May 6th, 2012
8:19 pm

I thought it couldn’t get any worse than Woody’s coaching in the playoffs. I was wrong. Doc is outcoaching LD without even trying. Celtics defense is too simple. All five guys keep a foot in the paint, double Joe hard, run hard at shooters. Hawks have had absolutely zero answer for it. Nobody can hit a jump shot, and they are scoring less than 20 points a qtr since the Celts started doing this in Game 2. Hawks haven’t run a coherent pick and roll, pick and pop, back screen, or for that matter anything else recognizable as an organized offensive set. It’s all one on ones, and even if a Hawk player does get penetration, there is never anybody trailing, the other four just stand a watch.

Hawks defense is even worse, because on top of having no answer for the pick and roll, or for Celtics screen game, they also are playing with what appears to be very little effort. And the effort guys off the bench, like Ivan, haven’t even gotten off the bench.

I’m beyond disgusted right now, because this is one of the most talented Hawks teams in the history of the franchise, and they are squandering this series.

justin

May 6th, 2012

Najeh Davenpoop

May 6th, 2012
8:22 pm

“So, averaging 4 boards a game for the series is doing a “good job on the boards”? ”

When he’s only playing 15 minutes per game, yes.

Obviously Al at full strength is much, much better than Ivan at full strength. I am not even saying Al has been that bad in this game, although he hasn’t been anywhere near his best. What I am saying is that Al isn’t going to help the Hawks win this game any more than Ivan would. The Hawks have problems in this game that go way beyond who plays backup PF.

If Al is 100%, no complaints from me (although Ivan still should be getting minutes alongside him). But if Al is not 100% — and he almost certainly is not — why the hell are they risking injury to him in a game where he isn’t and can’t help them win?

My beef is about Al risking reinjury, not Al’s quality of play. If they are going to play him, they need to ease him into the rotation. He’s on pace to play 22 minutes this game, which is way too much for his first game back.

justin

May 6th, 2012

Of course you have to play Al Horford. But only an idiot coach does that at the expense of the biggest energy guy we’ve had on the team all year in Ivan Johnson. northcyde

May 6th, 2012

And why are people blaming Horford? Like Ivan has done anything this series. I’m surprise that Horford can even get his arm above the goal. He’s played much better than I expected, and he’s only ( -6 ) +/- in the game.

I mean, it’s one thing if the Hawks had started the game playing like they did the first three games, in a grind it out, close game. Maybe in a game like that, you can do a little experimenting by bringing Al in, see what he’s got, and if he is playing well the upside with him is higher than the upside with Ivan. But in a game that is slipping away even in the first quarter, why complicate things by screwing up the rotation and risking reinjury? Makes no sense.

Don’t forget that ASG and their boytoy Billy Knight (who never found another NBA job) blew two picks on the “Williams”: Marvin and Sheldon. Both are basically circling the drain.

This blowout comes as no surprise. This is the team the ASG built and continues to protect for you. Just look at the teams advancing (Celtics, Heat, etc.) and you’ll see different caliber players and coaches. The fact is that LD would be an assistant on any of those teams and everyone except Al and JJ would be bench players – yes that means Josh Smith too for all you in la la land. And none of these teams would pay JJ half of what the ASG pay him.

northcyde

Say it REGGIE.

I’ve always said that JJ simply need to get his shots up. Smith actually has the offensive mentality that JJ should have. JJ is too much of a “team guy” sometimes. When you’re the most versatile scorer on the team, you have to look for your own offense first sometimes, especially if you have it going.

In the regular season, we averaged about 85 points again in regulation against the Celtics, and they averaged almost exactly the same against us. In the first 3 games of this series, we averaged 81 points in regulation and the Celtics averaged 78. So scoring in the low 80’s is not a terrible thing in light of that. Giving up 90 points through 3 quarters is, but part of that aberration is due to unusually hot shooting.

“In the regular season, we averaged about 85 points again in regulation against the Celtics, and they averaged almost exactly the same against us. In the first 3 games of this series, we averaged 81 points in regulation and the Celtics averaged 78. So scoring in the low 80’s is not a terrible thing in light of that. Giving up 90 points through 3 quarters is, but part of that aberration is due to unusually hot shooting.”

We should not be averaging in the 80’s against this team. Doc knows how to defend us, and we don’t adjust offensively. Bad coaching. We have to much talent to be getting shut down defensively by the Celtics.

To me, it seems that all ATL teams are scared of being successfully! As I watch the last couple minutes of the game, I have come up with a formula that will help our Atlanta Hawks win in the playoff. First they have to have miles and miles of Heart, second Ambitious, third Will, fourth Knowledge and final Strength to weather the storm. If our Hawks use this formula, they will see that light at the end of this long tunnel call the “Playoff”! Now go out there an play basketball the way it suppose to be played. We will “Rise Up”

Ambitious
Will

They interviewed the Hawks locker room before the game. In particular, Joe Johnson said that- he is definitely-going to give his all to “try” to get this win. “Trying to get this win” is not the same thing as saying- we are going to get this win, or we will fight tooth & nail to get this win, etc. But “try”? Joe set himself and his teamates up for total failure and they knew it. The Celtics are not Clevland or the Hornets, or the Raptors. The Hawks lost the game in the first 10 minutes of the game. Case closed. It’s a wrap. Dump Sund, fire LD, get rid of everythingm, including the kitchen sink at the Phillips.

northcyde

May 6th, 2012
9:55 pm

Bigdave . . it;s a combination of both. Horford and Smith are talented players, so the Hawks try to get all three the ball. Sometimes, like in this game, Horford and Smith will get more touches and put up more shots than JJ.

Now you even got Teague becoming a scoring option. So the scoring is going to be more balanced, like what you have with the Celtics or other good teams with multiple scorers.

JJ is paid to be like Kobe, but unless the other guys yield to JJ to take 20+ shots, there’s no way he can put up those kind of numbers, unless he shoots a high percentage. That’s why he has a Hawk career low of 15.6 FG attempts this year.

Part of it is definitely on him for not simply getting his shots up. The other part is him trying to make the right play and get it to open people.

When JJ gets doubled, the right basketball play is to find the open man. But the main superstars in the league could care less about a double team, they’re still putting the shot up.

The Celitcs were second in points allowed this year at 89.3 ppg. In our 4 game series we are averaging 81.5 ppg, with an overtime game included. No matter how good a team is defensively, you should still be able to run your offense.

Celtics and Bulls last year are totally different defensively. Chicago played great interior defense, and had great wing defenders. Boston’s strengths defensively are simply KG and Rondo, with Pietrus thrown in. The Celtics never had success in defending Jamal when he was here. Check the stats.

But in all honesty his game does not call for the the number of shots I used to suggest. Mostly because they aren’t coming from agressive moves or catch and shoot situations. Joe simply has to stop it with the excessive ball handling and especially against defenders of equal size. He no longer possessthe ability to get by his defender, and I don’t think that’s his objective anyway in most cases due to his inability to finish at the rim.

As a joe fan what bothers me most about our situation going forward is bang for your buck. As his abilities decline, and role reduces I can no longer use the lead by example argument. Rusty . . he was 11 – 28 . . and I’ll take that type of game over JJ’s 4 – 8 any day of the week.

@ O’Brien . . . people clown Charles Barlkey, but he pretty much predicted this 2 years ago. The Hawks simply have to make a decision on who they want to roll with. JJ or Josh.

Both can play with each other, but the problem is that Josh takes the same types of shots that JJ takes. If Josh is going to be mainly a mid-range jumpshooter that posts up, we may as well move him to SF and get a Reggie Evans type PF to rebound the ball when he misses the shot.

It’s like I was saying before Friday’s game though. Josh is a great talent, but his cons sometimes are major ones. The mid-range shooting and the risky passes being 2 of them that can kill the Hawks. When those things are minor issues, he and the Hawks are very good.

Most of the fan base would rather choose Smith over JJ, and that’s cool. But if that’s the case, we better assemble a team around him that can overcome some of his flaws.

And if he doesn’t let Teague run the team, we’re not going to improve anyway.

Everybody knows that Josh is the great talent and loose cannon on this team ( at the same damn time . . as Future would say ).

well horford wasn’t the reason we lost today, without him we still get blown out, so it’s better for him to get actual gametime minutes so he will be more productive the next game, celtics were just on fire and to be honest even when we lose this series at least I know this is the last season for the celtics big 3, so from here on out the hawks can just take their place if they want to, nothing to feel sad or mad about

“Rod,

Aren’t you the one who always says the playoff is a different animal? And you are right. Denver averaged 104 ppg in the regular season. but in games 1 and 2 against the Lakers, they averaged 94 ppg. In game 3, they scored 99.

But you keep harping on the Hawks should be able to score their season average against Boston, who is top 3 in defense. Let it go.”

Never said they need to score their season average. You can’t go from 96ppg to 81ppg. That’s a 15 ppg difference. Either way it goes I was correct because I also told you that this team was not built for the postseason and most on the blog disagreed. We are not built for the playoffs because we cant score. We allowed 93 ppg during the regular season, and Boston is averaging 88 ppg, even after tonights game. Defense has been better than it was in the regular season, and offense has been much worse. I wonder why?

We need Doc Rivers as the Hawks coach. He could beat the Celts with Hawks players.

On the other hand, this team needs major restructuring. This team just doesn’t play with any unity\chemistry. Just watch the Grizzlies, no real Super Stars but they play together.

Hawks need to get blown up. It only goes downhill from here with our pathetic ownership, front office, and coaching. We are paying Joe Johnson a max contract? We traded 2 first round picks for Kirk Hinrich? The ownership group is pathetic. Do they think the fan base is going to get excited for repeated first- or second-round playoff exits? I’d rather sell off our valuable parts, and look to 4-5 years from now to put together a solid young team and make a real run. It can be done, and quickly, if we can get management who knows what they’re doing. Just look at OKC. But we have plodded along with Joe Johnson and Josh Smith for 6 years!

PATHETIC. I won’t spend another dime on the Hawks until this crap changes.

I don’t think the turnovers are that big of an issue with Josh. If you are assigned a playmaking role, you will turn the rock over. I think cp3 leads the playoffs in turns. You have to take the good with the bad with Josh, and I’m willing to take potential superstar like stat lines. A lot of Josh turns come with him seeing the game differently and being ahead of the play while others aren’t. Bad offense is bad offense whether turns or too much ball handling.

Chicago was the #1 defensive team in the league this year without Derrick Rose most of the year giving up 88ppg. Philly is averaging 92 ppg in the playoffs. Chicago can defend all they want, but they won’t win because they can’t score without Rose. We can’t score, and our superstar has played in every game. I wonder why?

You know what, until YOU ACTUALLY WIN SOMETHING and show the NBA world you are one of the best in the league, Hawks fans need to step back and say nothing about what they are going to do!!

After the first game win, Hawks fans were way too brash about what THEY THOUGHT. You only get high on your horse when you have made your way in the NBA with consistent success and some Championships.

Hawks have never won a thing! I said on this board, ‘talk is cheap’. Winning a series isn’t even a big deal, it’s all about winning it all. Until that happens in Atlanta …. talk will remain cheap by the Atlanta fans.

Robotus will definitely affect the chemistry with his game..

Larry Leisure pulled off what SVG did in the 2008 Finals? He brought back his starting pt guard for the finals who had been out for months while the Magic were winning and it disrupted team chemistry. They lost without putting up much of a fight in the end..Hmmmmm

That team on paper was more talented than the Lakers…But Stan is only slightly improved next to Larry Leisure…..sigh…
