“Even in a so-called “down year” this past regular season, Jamal Crawford still averaged 13.9~14.0ppg while Marvin Williams, who lost his starting job and was demoted to a reserve role, averaged 10.2ppg.”

Marvin is totally indefensible, BUT it’s unfair to not point out that Jamal averaged over 4 more shots per game (in the same amount of minutes) than Marvin. Give Marvin 4 more shots per game, and his totals would likely be closer to Jamal’s. Not that I’d WANT to give him four more attempts, mind you, but you get the point. Without acknowledging the disparity in FG attempts, it’s apples and oranges, IMO.

That said, once again, Marvin is totally indefensible.

“I much rather watch JC1 drive fearlessly to the hoop than to watch JJ pound the crap out of the ball & then take a fade away jumpshot or give the ball or give the ball to Josh on the perimeter with the cloak running out.”

And all this time I thought the cloak belonged to Marvin.

It’s not Jamal Crawford’s fault that Marvin Williams lacks offensive aggressiveness and the ability to create his [Marvin Williams'] own shot; that Marvin Williams’ fault. It’s not Jamal Crawford’s fault that Marvin Williams doesn’t know how to “manufacture” points; that’s Marvin Williams’ fault. In closing, I’ll use your words that you typed, “Marvin is totally indefensible.” So, if “Marvin Williams is totally indefensible,” why are you defending him [Marvin Williams] on this blog? Case closed.

Easy answer. I’m not defending Marvin’s play, which is indefensible. I’m defending your unfair comparison of apples and oranges.

Is there a disparity in the FGA even though they played the same MPG?

Yes, there is. Case closed. Apples and Oranges. The PPG is irrelevant as a comparison UNLESS the FG disparity is noted.

And Marvin’s the bad apple, LOL. ;-)

Najeh,

If the Hawks had kept the draft pick from last year, I think they would have taken Chris Singleton to backup Marvin. They would not have taken Faried, because PF was a stronger position with Josh starting and Al capable of playing backup minutes at times.

As for the draft mistakes, it all starts with Marvin over CP3 or Deron. But Rudy Gay over Shelden would have been fine too. If Rudy Gay was drafted, chances are Marvin does not get the 5 years, $37.5 mil contract.

And what do you know. Here we are still waiting on Marvin to show up. Get him out of here. If the ASG does not amnesty JJ in a couple years (if they can’t trade him), Marvin is the next bext choice.

Northcyde,

The issue with Marvin is even when he was averaging 10 and 6, shooting 40% from 3, most of his stats were “empty stats” (imo). Based on my eyeball test, alot of his points were early in the game, or when the game was already out of hand.

In crunch time, Marvin was missing open shots during the regular season, especially against good teams. And it has carried over in the playoffs.

Marvin might score 10 points in the first half tomorrow, but when the game gets tight in the 4th, and we need him to knock down a wide open 3 because the Celtics have clamped down on JJ and Josh, Marvin is too unreliable.

You and Najeh are also having an interesting discussion about replacing Josh. Can we play better? Sure. But will we? After playing so many minutes last night, and hurting his ankle, it will be tough for TMac to duplicate his performance. And can we expect JJ to have another good game? What about Dampier?

These Hawks are just too unpredictable.

I don’t know if anyone has caught any of this Braves-Rockies series, but Denver has some LOUD Braves fans who pretty clearly drown out Rockies fans on the TV broadcast. Celtics fans in ATL have nothing on Braves fans in Denver. Still waiting for the Rob Parker article about Denver fans, though.

Tomorrow nite is a pivotal game. Going to Boston, we needed just 1 win to get homecourt advantage back. Since it didn’t happen last nite, tomorrow we either:

1) Come back to ATL with homecourt advantage after a win

2) Face a near impossible challenge down 3-1 in the playoffs against the Celtics.

Win tomorrow nite, and you have a lot of hope.

Lose, and it nearly takes a miracle to win the series.

Win tomorrow nite ATL!!!

And, we’re 1 more game closer to getting ZaZa back with a win – I think he can be a difference maker. We certainly want this series, that’s obvious.

SteveW

OB – I have to think Collins is about done with more than 5 minutes per game in 3 consecutive games.

Resting his achilles after the 2nd game, I knew it!

Damps likely done for a couple of games if he gets major minutes tomorrow nite.

Ivan is durable if he’s anything.

And I can’t help but think Jamal instead of Pargo in that few minutes in the 4th wouldn’t have been better. I really don’t mean to open that can of rotten worms back up, but really, Jamal had to be better than Pargo was.

But, we don’t have Jamal, so it’s really a mute point – we can win with what we have I think – it will take guts, but I think if we win round 1 – we can beat Philly. We are tougher and more battle tested than they are.

And we want it bad this year. Beating Boston is the challenge. Tomorrow should be war.

SteveW

Najeh – I do think the Hawks would have passed on “another” PF probably in Faried – but man, I’m not sure I wouldn’t put that beast at SF if we had him, so Josh could still be the rim protector. Faried is built like Hercules – Maybe we can send Marvin out to train with Faried this off season.

Funny seeing Teague really be our best rim protector last nite. That dude is looking to send shots into the seats on a regular basis. His vertical must be 40 inches in an adreneline, game type situation. Draftexpress stats can’t measure what you do in the midst of the battle – I’ve known slow guys who’s body just did what it took to close on a pass in football to catch it – just game time stuff.
Teague challenged more shots all over the court than anybody on either side really.

SteveW. I admire JT’s desire ,his speed, his athletic ability & his talent. This is a guy who can get to the hoop,is becoming better at hitting the open man, usually plays under control(few to) & whos outside shot is much better than people give him credit for. He has the ability to be a top PG in the league. This is a guy who has been screwed by woody & LD.he is essentially still a rookie.I still not sure if LD is not screwing with his head,he certainly isnt letting him as a PG free reins or helping his confidence. He play defense usually at a very high level & will get better. I am very glad he is on this team, best PG we have had since Mookie.

Down goes Dallas – that title reign didn’t last long – OKC struggled in 3 of those games – but a sweep is a sweep – closing out Dallas 2 straight at home – they certainly look like one of the teams to beat. San Antonio, LA, Miami, maybe even Boston, Clips or Memphis in that group.

LA Denver is an interesting series. Denver out scored LA by 3 in that 2nd game after the 1st quarter. Then Denver beat LA by 15 last nite. I’m not saying LA is going to lose that series. But I am saying Denver has looked very, very good most of the last couple of games. May be a fight there, who knows.

Rusty – Yes, I haven’t checked the stats, but I think JT must be averaging 16+ pts per game in playoff starts, which would be 9. Last season vs the Bulls, and now this season, he’s shown he at least competes in the postseason, which I like.

And he’s been paired against Rondo and Rose, so it’s not like he’s been catching a break or something.

There are a very few on this blog who fail to realize,
even after one explains, “context”, that within the dictionary
any given word may or may not have several different
possible meanings due to context.

However the stubborn tribe, [Republicans or Tea Party-ers] most likely
refuse to turn loose of a single phrase or point or even a word ………….
if `n it furthers their agenda.

Logical civil discourse with said tribe is frustrating due to nonexistent
open exchange of ideas, rather a perpetuation of agenda[s] whether by
propoganda or simply repeating their message on a loop.

We used to have a rather clever fellow on this blog.

I just thought of something that maybe it could work maybe not but still worth a shot: We bring in Horford as a decoy for either game 4 or 5 just to throw the celtics off. He doesn’t have to play well or make a lot of shots just be there as a presence to throw certain matchups off and then for a little bit insert smith in the same lineup as him and then try mcgrady also at times. Plus, if we get Pachulia in as well, we increase in size and limit Rondo’s penetration to the paint. At this point it’s do or die and even if they are not 100% does not matter since they will get all the rest needed if we lose this round anyway. I admired mcgrady’s will and drive to come back in the game even though his ankle was still hurting him. He wasn’t ready to give up on his team or himself, since it is the PLAYOFFS!!!

Keys to winning tonight:

1) Josh Smith returns

2) Teague and/or Joe MUST play over 40 minutes. Paul Pierce played 45 minutes (game 2) and he is old as hell.

3) Give T-Mac ALL of Marvin’s minutes (assuming Smoove plays)

4) Do NOT play Pargo at all. Give Willie a few minutes

5) Play Kirk a bit more if Pargo doesn’t play and we need to defend Rondo for a few minutes and Teague needs a breather
