Atlanta Hawks at Celtics Game 3: Game thread

BostonJosh Smith (knee) is out and Marvin Williams starts at power forward. Ray Allen (ankle) will play for the first time since April 10. Rajon Rondo is back from suspension.

  • Josh said he’s aiming to play in Game 4 Sunday: “I just have to rest and see how it feels. I want to get good enough to play but you never know. I don’t want to risk a domino effect and it being something more than what it is.”
  • Josh tested the knee at shootaround this morning: “It felt pretty good until I started doing a lot of exploding up the basket. That’s where the pain really starts to generate when I become explosive with it. But as far as running and cutting and everything else it feels OK.”
  • Yesterday Josh said he suffered the injury when Kevin Garnett banged into it while jostling for rebounding position. But he said the patellar tendonitis in his knee is a contributing factor. “I guess it caught up to me,” he said.
  • The Hawks are now down their top three bigs. “Certainly it’s an uphill battle and a challenge for our team but I have all the confidence in the world these guys will step up to the challenge,” Larry Drew said.
  • Josh: “We have to jell together, move the ball from side to side, and not get stagnant because this is a great defensive team. And we have to be able to match their physicality.”
  • Joe Johnson: “We have just got to try to outwill them. We’ve got to find a way. We can’t dwell on or worry about what we don’t have. We have got to go for what we know. Is it going to be tough? Yeah, but it’s possible.”
  • Drew said Joe still will check Paul Pierce. “Obviously with the matchup and Marvin starting at the four spot will have to do things a little differently as opposed to when Josh is in the lineup,” Drew said.
  • Doc Rivers on Brandon Bass defending Marvin: “That’s hard. We worked on that all day. We thought Josh would play but we worked on the small lineup because when you look at them most of the year their best lineup has been their best lineup when they go small.”
  • Joe saw heavy defensive pressure with Josh on the court. It only figures to get worse with Josh on the bench and a lack of offensive punch from among the remaining Hawks. “I’ve got to go quick or give the ball up quick and trust my teammates to make plays,” Joe said. “That’s pretty much the two things I’ve come up with. We’ll see when we get to the fourth quarter.”
  • Rivers on Allen, who last played April 10: “There are no restrictions. He hasn’t played and gone up and down since he’s been injured. We’ve done some halfcourt but this is the first time he will do fullcourt since he’s been injured.”
  • Suddenly Rivers is the coach warning his players not take a wounded opponent lightly: “The guys have to go out and play and at the end of the day hope they understand these are playoff games and you can’t give any away.”

Enjoyable game they had chances to win,I knew Damp. was gonna do well.I don’t care if we are all healthy we need to use him more, pargo didn’t show me much and when T-Mac was healthy in the 1st half the Cs had no answer for him. The national tv announcer noticed something all of us have been talking about which is when we go iso joe other team members on the floor have to move with out the ball,it makes it harder for joe to do anything when his teammates are spectators and not moving with out the ball.We have to expect j smoove to not play on Sun.that would be my mind set.I believe the Cs are a bit tired after this one so aren’t we though.Teauge has really grown up outside the kick ball bringing it up ineptness Get them on Sun GO HAWKS

A lot of y’all are talking about this series like it’s over. I’m not exactly an optimist generally speaking, but if the Hawks win Game 4 they retake home court advantage and are in the driver’s seat for winning this series. Game 4 is an absolute must win but this series is far from over.

maybe we should call a play.

I was disappointed when Teague got ball and blocked on layup by KG. should’ve set something up there

And Noah twists an ankle for the Bulls

And Denver is laying it on LA – and the Nuggets are shooting less than 50%

Outrebounding LA 22-10 – Faried with 8, less than half way thru the 2nd quarter

Don’t worry if he was here, Rook would be planted safely on the bench for 2-4 years of seasoning,

As much as I want to see the core broken up. Kirk is gone. Amnesty Marvin Williams. That’s 16 million right there. I would sign a proven scorer like JC1, Nick Young, JR Smith….get a quality wing who can slash, and knock down open jumpers, Resign Ivan Johnson, Get a decent quality big like Reggie Evans, and fill out the bench with minimum salary vets like we did this year.

Great coaching game LD, I hate your guts. He also finds new ways to loose games.why the hell did he have Vlad in the game at the end,why did he give so many minutes to Pargo, why did he have Pargo playing PG with JT in the game, again way to much iso joe, way to many min to MW,why was not Ivan in at the end,way to much small ball, should have played damp a lot more min so he would be in better shape,TMac got screwed coming here playing for the ass,he basically forced the KH trade,KH gives nothing to the offense,he’s is almost as bad as MW. I think that LD has to be the worst coach in the NBA,doesn’t really deserve the credit for this team as has has given many games away such as 2 in this playoff. It will be hard to take him here next year. I would keep the core but get a real coach.

Doug Collins is up 3-0 with this same squad!

The Hawks would have been swept in 4 by the 76′ers for what its worth….

Boston should be ashamed of themselves..they had every last one of their guys on their HOME COURT while we missing EXTREMELY KEY GUYS. To take their BUTTS to OT and ONLY LOSE BY 6 is amazing. Like Najeh said, THIS SERIES IS FAR FROM OVER! WAY 2 GO, HAWKS..SO VERY PROUD OF YA…OH AND MARVIN, GO SIT DOWN.

Dampier showed well, rust is due to LD…
Shouldve played Stackhouse too….fresh legs…
Fresh legs is the key, we looked so much better late…

SteveW, yes, I still take the Lakers.

Bynum had a terrible half. An easy pick even down as much as they are. NBA is mostly predictable.

Even if Nuggets hold on, it’s just prolonging the inevitable.

Certainly Marv is a poor excuse for an NBA rotation player;
but wishing inj on anyone is hateful.

But I’m sure the Lakers win the series, but gonna be tough like I predicted a few days ago.

I haven`t read everyone`s remarks.
So I do not know what the is the popular opine
for LD`s perfomance this eve.

Therfore, I`ll make two points only for you.

1. Game two; I was extrely critical of LD.

2. Tonight LD should be lauded, along with our entire team.
What a magnificent performance under extreme duress;
both LD / and staff plus the players, all of them.
