Celtics at Atlanta Hawks Game 2: Game thread

  • The Hawks feared Zaza Pachulia could miss up to another two weeks but word is they were encouraged by a recent test of his injured left foot. Pachulia could return to play as soon as Game 5 of this series.
  • Ray Allen (ankle) is out for the Celtics and Doc Rivers didn’t sound very optimistic when asked if it was time to count out Allen for the series: “I don’t know. It’s frustrating, more for him than for us. We don’t know what to do. He looked great yesterday off the court running and shooting. Today he couldn’t walk. He couldn’t do his normal shooting before the game.”
  • Avery Bradley slides to point guard and Mickael Pietrus will start at shooting guard. Pietrus draws Kirk Hinrich. Rivers: “We don’t want Paul chasing around little guards. When we change lineups, [Peitrus] will slide over to guard Joe at times.”
  • Larry Drew: “We have played this team without Rondo before and they beat us. We have to play our ‘A’ game because our ‘B’ game is not going to get it done.”
  • Josh Smith on the Celtics without Rondo: “We will get up and pressure the ball and make it hard for them to get into their sets. With Bradley, we have to cut him off early and take his confidence because when he gets confidence he’s tough.”
  • Bradley: “They will probably try to speed me up. I feel like the regular season got me ready for this.”
  • Drew on Bradley’s big game vs. Hawks in regular season: “We did not do a good job with him off the dribble. He was able to be just as elusive as Rondo. I think both guys are very capable of getting into the interior of your defense. Bradley is a little different. Rondo is more finesse; Bradley is more power getting in there. He got in there a few times against us where we did not do a good job of containing the basketball. We are going to have to be good defending him off the dribble.”
  • Rivers: “If we feel the pressure it will take us out of our stuff. That’s why losing Rondo hurt us. He’s really our only true point guard.”
  • Drew: “I expect Paul [Pierce] to get it a little more touches and things run through him. I expect [Kevin Garnett] to be even much more offensive minded.”
  • Marvin Williams, on if the Hawks will avoid their tendency to have a letdown against a short-handed opponent now that it’s the playoffs: “I would like to think so. I think everybody understands what’s at stake at this point.”
  • Charles Barkley last night on TNT: “Game 2 is more about the Atlanta Hawks. We always criticize them for their mental toughness and lack of focus. This is a game where they would normally let up. Doc Rivers’ guys are going to play and come out way more focused than they were in Game 1. But the Atlanta Hawks have a tendency to chill out…a lot.”
  • Drew on Joe Johnson’s poor Game 1: “He missed a lot of good shots. He had good looks. It’s not a situation where he gets discouraged or we do anything differently. We are still going to run things through him.”

  • Joe: “As scorers and shooters, you have to have that short memory. I missed a lot of shots I normally make. I’m sure I’ll make them tonight.”

Would like to see the Hawks play uptempo again, I also look for our bench to score at least 35pts tonight as well. Celtics have no bench so we gotta keep the tempo faster.

Hopefully Joe doesn’t force shots and passes the ball more quickly when defense collapses on him….and hopefully he doesn’t settle for 3s especially if he’s not making them!

I think the Celtics may be in trouble in this series. I would never count them out, but even though they didn’t play well in game 1, I’m not sure how well they can play against the Hawks, especially without Rondo and Ray. In game 1, the Celtics struggled to score the ball and you could see the dramatic impact that the loss of Ray Allen had on them. Their floor spacing was not nearly as good as it is with Ray and they had almost no outside scoring threat since no one could seem to make a 3 point shot. If the Hawks play hard and play their game, and guys play within the context of the team and avoid hero ball or ball-hogging, the Hawks have a serious chance of making this a short series.

Now, I could be wrong, but based upon what I saw in game 1, the Celtics looked a bit overmatched by all of Atlanta’s scoring guards, and their inability to score combined with their lack of offensive rebounding leads me to believe that the Celtics are going to have a tough time winning this series.

Look for celts to get some early calls, they missed the play where Josh touched it last and followed up that by tossing rondo, so it wouldn’t suprise me to see the celts living at the FT line tonight.

I think Pierce, Garnett, and one of Boston’s guards is going to have to play a big game tonight for Boston to win. Meanwhile, Atlanta has offensive weapons all over the floor. Teague, Pargo, Green, Marvin, and even Kirk can all light the Celtics up scoring the ball if they get it going. That’s not even taking Joe and Josh into consideration who are going to almost always put points on the board even if they are not shooting the ball well, and with the high volume of shots they take, if they get hot also, Boston could find themselves down in a hurry.

The key tonight will be defense. If the Hawks can continue to force the Celtics into offensive struggles, and the Hawks focus on taking quality shots, they will likely win this game. If it comes down to needing a basket at the end of the game, the Hawks are more well-equipped for that at the moment. Pierce is the only true go-to guy left on the Celtics right now with Ray and Rondo out. Also, although KG is capable of being a go-to scorer, the Celtics don’t seem to use him in that role anymore. It’s going to be fun to watch what happens in this game tonight. If the Hawks lay an egg or the Celtics step it up and get the win, the series could change significantly. Right now, the Hawks are in full control and I’d give them a major edge as of right now, but all that could change with a loss tonight.

Hawks just have to play smart, hard, start the game hot like they did in game 1 and they win game 2.

Only way they lose is not take Boston seriously, or start playing dumb all of a sudden. All they have to do is move the ball, move the men, post up Josh, and watch the magic happen.

Totally agree that ATL will go crazy if this team makes it to the finals. Even making it to the ECF and not embarrassing themselves once they get there will make this city proud.

If the Hawks come back and win this series I’ll eat these words, but right now I have say Joe is not the answer. We sorely missed Josh down the stretch. Dominique is a worse announcer than he was a player….and yes…I’ll say it….when he left …when he left….Ga went to the final four…without him…he still bothers me…..annoying….you know he has that same me first….gimme the ball….watch me shoot mentality…and he admires it in players like him…whether they win or not.
At any rate..really ticked off with this performance…had to say it was expected…sir charles and the rest of the talking heads lorded it over us….and he we are….sucking again….when all the chips were in our favor…we sucked.
What the heck is this man?
And yes, for what I’m seeing I have Marvin also is not a big game player. As Charles would say

Awful coaching by LD. Why was Marvin in the game? Why did he take so long to put Ivan back in the game in the 4th after he had played excellent defense against Garnett? Why go to ISO-Joe when Joe shoots best coming off screens. Why continue with the pick and roll when the Celts is one of the best teams defending the pick and roll? Will some reporter somewhere ask these questions?? LD lost this game. Period.

“Brig – We got up 11 and LD took the starters out and the C’s immediately closed it to 4 points and it was down hill from there.”

Actually Jerry, it wasn’t that simple. Hinrich was already out (for Marvin) when we pushed it to 11. Ivan was already in for Twin as well. With 2:51 in the 3rd the Celtics got hot and cut the lead to 5 by the end of the quarter. Joe didn’t come out until 0:46 left.

Starting the 4th the Hawks went cold and didn’t score until 8:03. By then it was tied.

The Hawks bench score a total of 14 points in Game 2 vs. the Celtics. With the Celtics’ depleted roster and backcourt, Jamal Crawford could [easily] average 18-20+ppg as a reserve [player] or starter for the Hawks. This loss is on Rick Sund and the ASG for the dumb player personnel decisions made before this year’s regular season, most notably, not re-signing Jamal Crawford. Also, if the Hawks lose this [playoff] series, this [playoff series] loss will be on Rick Sund and the ASG.

Kirk Hinrich, I believe, scored 8 [eight] points in the first half and 0 [zero] points in the second half.

Marvin Williams, once again, comes up “a day late and a dollar short.”

Marvin Williams’ stat line for tonight – 3pts, 6rebs, 0asts and 1blksht in 21:02 [of playing time].

And some [idiot] blogger[s] thought Rick Sund deserves/deserved consideration for Executive of the Year.

Examples of some dumb ass Rick Sund and ASG personnel moves/decisions:

1. Don’t re-sign Jamal Crawford
2. Re-sign/Retain Jason Collins
3. Sign Vladimir Radmanovic
4. Don’t do whatever it takes to get rid of Marvin Williams
5. Decided to go with Kirk Hinrich over Jamal Crawford
6. Didn’t properly address the lack of depth and size at the Center position; didn’t sign a quality backup center

I would kill to see Joe yell at someone or something just one time in his playing career. Show some emotion, wake your teammates up, get T’d up, anything to show the fans and your team you care. This team embodies the old cliche “you take on the personality of your coach” and, as an extension, your “star” and “captain” Joe Johnson.

L(s)D and Joe are the most withdrawn coach/star tandem in the league, and because of this docile attitude they exude, the Hawks as a team have no killer instinct whatsoever. Ivan, bless his heart, plays his a$$ off, but he was simply outmanned tonight. Joe getting beat by Pierce time and again on D was inexcusable. Your shot not falling is one thing, defensive effort and mental lapses are entirely different.

Also, MC, your blog people HAVE TO KNOW why Marvin is still getting minutes over T-Mac in crunch time. He may be the most timid athlete in professional sports. He needs to just say “f-ck it” and start fouling the crap out of people, become a $7 million enforcer. QUACK!

Thanks for the updates. I stated if they win this game they probably win the series but wont happen now. Marvin really said that. Is he on drugs? You on your home court and you giving credit to a team beating you on your home court without Rondo or Allen. Hawks are like the movie from the 90’s with Bill Murray Groundhog day.

I think one thing Charles Barkely stated awhile back saying the Hawks have too many nice guys are true. You have to have an alpha male who just states, “you know what I dont give a f!!!k I am gonna ride the team on my shoulders and win this game. hawks dont have any player like that. You need a closer. Pierce has that, Kobe has that, heck even Melo who I am not the biggest fan of has that. You need that in the playoffs. There isnt anyone on the Celtics that can guard Johnson but again from what the stats say down the stretch Pierce will get to the line and take it to the basket, Johnson likes to create space and fade for shots. It makes such a big difference even if you are struggling from the filed taking it to the basket and drawing fouls. That is what hurts for a player like Johnson. I like Teague and he is learning and is playing well I dont expect him to be like that now but Johnson is what he is but it isnt enough.

Joe was out 3:09 (from 0:46 of the 3rd to 9:37 of the 4th)

Josh came out at 11:13 of the 4th for 1:35 and was back in at 9:37)

Jeff was out to start the 4th but back in by 9:37 (2:23)

When LD subbed for Joe (0:46 of the 3rd) we were up 66-60. When LD called timeout at 9:37 of the 4th and put the starters in we were STILL up 2 at 66-64.

So, tell me again how LD “cost them the game”?

IM with you Slim about sitting your starters, who plays 4 reserves at 1 time in the playoffs? This bench aint that good and dont really play well as a unit. Between Teague, Joe, and Josh, one must be on the floor at all times. How many times were Pierce and Garnett out of the game at the same time? Not much. Mcgrady should have played more he has theability to get to the line which is a must in the playoffs , when he came in during the 4th, he seemed a bit disinterested and not willing to come get the ball.I think he was pissed because Drew was using Marvin over him. And at that point Marvin had not even scored, I dont think. Im ok with resting the guys in the 1st half. But in the 2nd half you got to ride your main guys. Drew is going to have to shorten his rotation. Assuming Josh can play next game, the bench should basically be Mcgrady and Ivan. with spot minutes for Marvin and Pargo/Green. pargo, green and marvin, only 1 should be in the game at a time.

Whatever – Boston hasn’t won anything yet – Green and Pargo have made nice contributions off the bench – now you want to bury them over 1 game?

After a loss would Kobe EVER say “there’s no reason to be upset?”

WE JUST LOST HOMECOURT

WOULD RONDO PIERCE OR KG SAY THAT?

Why did T-Mac only get 5 mins?

Why was Heinrich in the game at the start of the 4th quarter? It was clear to everyone he was struggling mightily out there. Why was Marvin out there at all through most of the 4th quarter? This buster should have never seen the court in the 4th….Notice the Hawks scored points after he found the bench with about 3:09 left in the game..Too little to late though….

Oh well,. now the Celts have their mojo, home court advantage, and their starting point guard back in the lineup for game three and we lose Josh…sigh..

Oh the Humanity!

FYI, Philly blew out Chicago on the road tonight.. Huge win for them..

Yeah, in the REGULAR SEASON.

I was huge Pargo fan during year but he cannot just jack up 3s all day

How many games has LD lost for us this year, way more than a few,he really don’t have a feel for the game.

Hinrich: 3-7 42.8% 0 turnovers

Joe: 7-17 41.1 % 3 turnovers

Josh: 8-21 38.1% 1 turnover

Jeff: 6-18 33% 2 turnovers

Hinrich’s “struggles” had a lot of company. But despite him being out there early in the 4th, we never lost the lead until all the starters were back.

I will go out on a short limb and say the series returns to the A tied 2-2. I’ll give the final prediction after Sunday’s game.

I would give JJ away for free to take his salery away,it was so dumb to give him that contract.you can’t have a flowing offense with him in the game,he fores the ball & dribbles way to much. He really thinks he has to take over the game in order to justify all the money we gave him.

Plain an simple bad coaching the Hawks need T Mac if they even want a chance to win in Boston!

An Ill sai it again JJ is not a superstar they need someone who is not scared of the moment!

Now THERE is the 64,000 dollar question. Slim I totally agree with you here (Though you are likely WAY too young to get the 64,000 dollar reference). Ask your folks.

Agree, Hinrich was not the only one struggling tonight for sure..

But the momentum was lost first at the end of the 3rd and carried over into the 4th..The lead was lost next..Larry hinted maybe he left his starters out too long in the post game interview. Yes?

slim,

Yes, indeed, but no coach can KNOW ahead of time what he’ll get from any bench player. Had the bench come through in a big way how many posters here would be giving props to LD?

Very few, and you know it.

IF the Hawks had JC1, All NBA, and ZaZa tonight they’d win by 25! LOL!

Now I hope you Hawks see how bad you brods look without a true playmaker on the court my suggestion Tmac at the one bump teague to the 2 he is more of a scoring guard anyways joe, josh an Zaza get well soon Jason played good D the whole game on k.g soon as he fouled out it went downhill from there cuz k.g turned it on, an Pierce was flawless.

“Had the bench come through in a big way how many posters here would be giving props to LD?”

There is something about Larry’s demeanor that appears to rub people on this blog the wrong way and it goes beyond just his controversial substitution patterns…

JeJe – Pargo only played 4 minutes in game 2 – in game 1 he was 2 – 4, 1 – 2 from 3 pt. What’s wrong with that?

If someone had never seen a Hawks game until this series, they would come away with the impression that Marvin Williams is the worst player on this team. It says a lot about Marvin that Collins subbed in for him and the team got better.

Oh so now many are understanding why I bash Marvin all the time (SMH). Guy looked like he was petrified every time he touched the ball. The guy is truly one of the worst basketball players in the league.

I have also been preaching all year that this team was built for the regular season, and not the playoffs. Over two games we are averaging 81.5 ppg , and giving up 80.5 ppg, so defense is not the problem, its offense. Joe and Marvin are stinking up the joint, and Josh and Teague are balling. Where are the great Willie Green, and Pargo. I stated that playoff basketball was totally different, and we see why. We have no true scorers. My original prediction may be right. Boston in 5. I hope not.

I haven’t read all 700+ comments, but I hope there are plenty of comments wondering what the hell LD was doing with his player substitutions. He blew the lead in the 2nd half, and Josh’s injury was the icing on the cake that precluded any sort of comeback.

I’d love to see the team @ full strength – with Horford and Pachulia – can we realistically expect to win with both of them out?

Yea they sure could use JC1 right about now…

[...] However, if Smith can’t return, then the Hawks would be down three quality big men. Centers Al Horford and Zaza Pachulia continue to nurse various injuries, but are fairly close to returning.  [...]

Sushi, the 3 future HOF for the Celtics is Ray Allen who is in street clothes right now but may be back in the 3rd or 4th game.

The Celtics really turned up their defense in the 4th quarter and right on cue, the Hawks started going into iso mode. They stopped doing their uptempo game, passing the ball and not moving without the ball. That made them much easier to guard. They have got to stay with what got them the lead and kept them there.

I, like most on this blog, do not understand LD’s substitutions. Maybe T-Mac is not following the plays and that is why he gets yanked but, whatever the thing is between him and LD, it is hurting the team.

I hope Josh’s injury is not something that will keep him out. We have no chance if he goes down. Joe has to do what Pierce did for this game. Look deep within himself and come out ready to show everyone why he has been an All-Star the last several years and why he gets paid the money he does. If he does not, he will be dubbed the 2nd coming of Jon Koncak. But, that may be a bit harsh.

I hope the guys can get one in Beantown. If they don’t, this will be a short series. Everyone of the broadcasters already has them written off. Of all of the buzz the other teams are getting, only Utah seems to be getting less ink than the Hawks.

Coach got timid so the players played timid. If coach wouldn’t trust his bench at home how in the world is he going to trust them on the road. The buck stops with the coach, if he wants up tempo he needs to demand it and stick to his guns. The players will fall in line.
