Here are a few comments I have received here on the blog concerning Boston’s comeback and how we had an ‘ugly’ win down the stretch:
” Rondo’s inexcusable actions cost the Celtics a real chance to win this game. I don’t care how much the Hawks led by… if they didn’t foul Josh on that play but instead tied him up, very strong possibility the Hawks lose this game. That’s what we call a squeaker.”

I didn’t even think we played well besides that hot start in the 1st. Way to not give the game back though. JJ played was Ray Charles out there tonight. Hopefully, he knows the Celtics won’t play that horribly every game in the series, and he steps his game up.

“One thing about tonight’s game: it is a little bit of fool’s gold. Pierce isn’t going to throw up that many bricks every game. Allen will be back. Kirk isn’t going to play this well the whole series. Teague, and to a lesser extent Josh, are not going to make outside shots at the rate they did.
The one aberration going the other way is Joe’s terrible shooting night; Joe will get better. But if the Celtics make half of those jumpers in Game 2, the Hawks are not going to win again playing the way they did, even if Rondo doesn’t play.
During those dry spells, the Hawks have to find a way to get better shots. Can’t rely on bailout 3s from Kirk to save bad possessions. I am glad they won and they played great defense, but they have to find a way to get good shots more consistently against Boston’s D. A lot of that is on LD to read the Celtics D and design plays that will get players open more often.”
From our OWN fans, we get negative comments about how we gave up a good lead, how Boston had the chance and probably would have won had not Rondo got ejected, and how Joe Johnson ugly shooting night and his turn-overs cost us to lose the lead..blah BLah BLAH!! If I’m not mistaken, did NOT the Hawks come back (just like Boston did last night) from a 12 or 14 pts definct against Boston the 1st game we played them here in Atlanta by Ray Allen’s flying 3’s to ONLY LOSE BY 3? (Boston losing by 9 last night) Did NOT Joe Johnson score 25 BIG points to ALMOST win it for the Hawks that night?( Rondo/KG ALMOST won it for Boston last night), Did not Teague make a bad/stupid decision to jack up the airball 3 when the ball should have CLEARLY been in the HOT HANDS of Joe Johnson’s that night which may have tied the game? (Rondo’s stupid/bad decision cost them the game on last night)..a whole lot of similarites there. Boston did the same crap at losing a big lead in the 4th to us after a great comeback by Joe but our poor poor Hawks ALWAYS seem to get punished as if we just stumbled up again into the playoffs as if this isnt our 5th CONSECUTIVE season making it, WITH LIMITED PLAYERS AT THAT..all im lefted with is, WOW, WHAT A SHAME, NO LOVE FROM THE FANS!!

The Hawks beat tne C’s with Rondo, so, why do we need Rondo gone to beat them again?”
I totally agree..I feel the same about Ray Allen..He played that 1st game but we only lost by 3..Im not afraid of a full crew of the Celtics. But who I am afraid of are the ref’s. If a full healthy Hawks and a full healthy Boston plays w/o the ref’s giving it to either team, I say HAWKS win series!! I’m not getting all caught up in Boston PAST champ rings..The Celtics can play just as dumb and stupid just like our Hawks.

Real Test is maturity…
Are Hawks psychologically able to put Celtics away…
Hawks historically bad with a lead, no matter…
If its a halftime lead or a series lead, they just…
haven’t displayed the killer instinct to put teams away…
This is the immediate challenge for LD…next Beantown…
Last year vs. Chicago…Hawks couldnt close it out…
They rest on their laurels too often…whether its the…
Bad jump shot with a 10 pt lead or the 1-on-1 play…
When instead they should get to the basket…
It’s psychological…win 3 games, lose 2…
That’s been their pattern, but I see improvement…
LD did a great job last night…didnt lose the reigns…
Tommorrow he has to find the right combo…
The right guys who will stomp on their collective throats…
Rather than let them back in the game/series…
Ivan comes to mind, Collins is smart, Hinrich is tough…
The Celtics wont shoot that poorly again…
Ray will be back…
No matter, Hawks match up well with Celtics…
I like Smoove’s demeanor and body language…
He’s on a mission, focused…cant be seduced jumper…
Gotta get to the hoop, get FT, make FT…get in bonus
JJ got shoot in rhythm, off dribble going to the basket…
Too many set shots from time line – too far out…
Get a rhythm shot…
Get Collins the ball!!!…
He’s wide open all the time…
They dont respect him, so make them pay!!!

Imagine if Josh ran up on a referee the way Rondo did, would we be guessing whether or not he gets suspended. Rondo should no doubt be suspended a game. Really does not matter. As long as Ray Allen is out, the Hawks should not lose to the Celtics. The 20 million dollar man has to step up a play like a star. There is no one on Boston’s team who can guard him.
I liked the lineup with TMac and the starters because it posed a serious miss match problem for the Celtics. Who ever they put Bradley on, TMac or Joe, that player posted him up, and forced the Celtics to double, which freed up open shooters, or Joe or TMac tried to take advantage of that matchup by shooting over the top. They started switchin Rondo over to Joe, because Bradley has no chance. Jos has to become more aggressive, and stop taking so long to make his moves.

Unbelieveable how so many folks are making excuses for Rondo’s actions. As if his chest bump was the refs fault. Doc Rivers gives a lame excuse as well. Rondo bump the ref in the back. Then Doc add more insult by saying it’s okay to continue to bark at the refs after an ejection. If you watch the video, Bass put Josh in the headlock. Clearly a foul on the play. David Stern and the league will look weak if they dont suspend Rondo. They have to protect the refs just like they protect the players.

He Did a Big Man!
If, Twin can do for the Hawks what, Luc Longley did for the Bulls and, what Bill Cartwright (with that fugly push shot on the left baseline) did for the Bulls at age 40ish – the Hawks will be fine at center.
I know … I know there is only one MJ, but don’t forget that MJ had a HOF Coach, Pippen, Kukoc, Paxson and Kerr in his camp as well. Of, course we have none of those things, but the center position was never the Bulls point of contention nor, attack either.
If Twin does a semblance of what those centers did, then what Joe Johnson said is quite true, ” … the guards will have to get a little nastier.”
Forget about whether or not Rondo plays or not, that is a Celtics problem and, we got 99 problems of our own, but a center ain’t one. We got to go to war with what we got, and what we got is a lot. Unless, until, we run into the Lakers and, Bynum with Gasol.

It’s great that we still had an off night and still beat the Celtics. We had bad match up, playing our subs to let Boston catch up. Say what you want, the Hawks were slowing down, they were getting out scored, and had more ball stolen from them and more turn overs. So with all that Boston STILL could not take the lead. Hawks are only going to play better and better with something to prove. Who’s this troll? I know you’re hot Chris, I would be too if we played like that, but you don’t defend your team very well. Sounds like excuses. Talking about the fans and our hockey… Please you want to talk about fairweather fans to troll on the Heat or some other team that gets half a sporstcenter show on them. Back to business, If the Hawks recap, set better match up, and they handle the ball better we will make our statement that we are here and we are serious

And LD, please do not put Marvin on Pierce at any time….we don’t need to awaken the giant.
I expect more of the same from LD come Tuesday. When he sees something that works, he sticks with it as long as he can. Collins and Hinrich will be starting again.

Ok guys, here is a question. I’m not questioning Horford’s toughness. I sincerely don’t understand the rehab of this injury. But if Josh or even Joe would’ve gone down with this same injury, do you guys think they would not at least have committed to playing at least 10-15 min per game in this series? I understand with a knee or ankle the severity of playing. But can someone help me understand what is the true risk of Al playing now, close to five months after he was injured? Is the injury still sore, or is it a thing of strength from this point? I’m having a hard time understanding why he wouldn’t, at minimum, be able to play a handful of minutes with the second unit.
By the way, I”m getting tired of hearing national media say that Paul Pierce won’t always have a bad game in this series. Do they realize that Joe had just as much of a bad game? In fact, its better for the star players to have a bad game at home (Durant, Randolph) because your bench normally plays better at home than on the road. So the Hawks won last night, with only three bigs playing (Josh, Collins, and Ivan), Joe having a poor shooting night, and Green/Pargo/T Mac having an ineffective night as well. Basically the Hawks had a great quarter, and played bad for the next three quarters (mainly because of the benches play). If the Hawks can see they can beat this team, even when they don’t play a perfect game, how will that not be a positive going forward, to step on Boston’s throat and suffocate any chance they think they have.
Also, LD is doing a great job. But I think he needs to take a page out of Miami and Boston’s book, and that is to ALWAYS keep one of your best three players in the game during the playoffs. Josh, Joe, and/or Teague (or Kirk) must remain on the floor at all times of the game. Also, bringing Vlad in the game at times, will open up the lane for Joe, and Josh. Could you imagine Vlad being the one in the corner for that token “Marvin Shot”?

Here’s an update on how my predictions on Hoopinion are looking so far:
1. Collins, Erick Dampier, Jerry Stackhouse and Vladimir Radmanovic should only see spot or emergency minutes.
Didn’t see Vlad, which was a major bonus. Don’t expect to see Damp or Stack unless its a blowout. Collins started, played his most minutes of the season and had his best game of the season. You could tell he was very winded in the fourth quarter and Boston was going right at him.
If the Celtics get a jump ball and end up stealing Game 1, we’d all be talking about how LD played Collins too much. But as I said in the game thread (don’t know if you saw it Mary), I’ll eat crow after Collins’ performance tonight.
2. Drew must trust Teague and let him be himself.
For the most part I’m cool with the distribution of minutes. I thought Teague could have played more and stayed on the bench too long at times. The two huge shots Teague hit in the fourth quarter are going to have an impact both on Drew’s trust of Teague and Teague’s trust of himself.
3. Drew needs to realize that Ivan Johnson, not Collins, is the only hope at center.
Benching Ivan for barking at the refs and then barking at LD could be a series-changing move. Although the Celtics almost came back exploiting an exhausted Collins, Ivan got to watch Rondo’s meltdown from the bench and think “that could have been me costing my team this game.”
4. The Celtics will get inside the Hawks’ heads and control the tempo and tone of the series.
This hasn’t happened YET, but it’s a long series.
5. Josh Smith will be frustrated trying to score inside against the Celtics defense and float to the perimeter, exactly where they want him.
Josh shot a lot from outside but you can’t argue when they are going in.
6. Joe will try to play hero ball and fail.
I look like a genius.

________
doc, finally an intelligent comment, besides Ms. Dee this morning. For a while, I thought we lost game 1.
I assume we are talking about Zaza’s condition here. Yes doc, I believe that Zaza initially got hurt in the Summer games for his country: The Republic of Georgia. He was playing starters minutes out there, in one game he abused Marcin Gortat with 25 points and 12 boards (or so), someone on the blog kept saying we should have sent Zaza to Phoenix for Gortat or that other scruffy big Phoenix has. LOL on that ish.
Heres my point: Zaza injured his left calf muscle and was shut down for the remainder of their season. IDK if his medical care was adequate, but he returned to us after the lock out and was wearing a calf sleeve all season, the only time he sat was recently for a sore achillies on that same left leg.
Those calf muscles and tendon weaknesses imho, has made the ankle and foot joints susceptible to further injury in this compressed season’s schedule. When Marvin fell on Zaza and sprained his ankle and big toe, I immediatley thought we should have gotten a CT-Scan on the foot as opposed to a MRI, because there are just too many small bones in the foot, much like the cranial vault and the complex knee joints.
CT-Scans are the gold standard in this case, imho, because the cathode tube can look around corners, into tunnels and, inside joint capsules from more angles than a MRI. I was thinking last week, that Zaza may have a cracked cartilage in the dome of his left talus, basically an osteochondral defect.
If that is the case, first of all, they will never tell us fans, secondly the medical treatment Zaza is receiving is all wrong for his injury. He was only booted for two days initially, and was never administered a CT-Scan to my knowledge and because of his size, he may have required some type of surgery to insert a screw/plate to correct the defect, which is intra-capsular.
Either way, improper diagnosis will always mis-treat the patient. doc, I surmise that Zaza has a more serious injury than the company line of day to day. Besides, a sprained foot is a lot different than a sprained ankle and sprained big toe.

Despite being a 2 time all-star, and averaging 15 and 9 last year, you will always look for a reason to question/doubt Al’s commitment especially since he showed up in camp out of basketball shape.
Al was injured on January 12, so he has been out a little over 3 1/2 months, not the
“almost 5 months” you mentioned. Also, his recovery time was always listed at 3-4 months.

Why is it so hard for LD to notice that Iso-Joe does not work anymore?
Northcyde,
He’s been red hot from 3 lately, but sometimes, you just don’t have it..
The last game of the regular season, JJ went 1-4 (25%) from 3. The previous 3 games before that, he went 13-17 (76%) from 3. However, the previous 7 games, he was 10-39 (26%). Sometimes JJ is off, sometimes he is on. But nothing will stop him from taking his 3’s. And he took at least 4 threes in every game.
He needs to realize when he is on, and adjust accordingly.

They are not going to go in every game this series. I give Josh a lot of credit for improving his mid range jumper, which he has been hitting at a pretty nice clip the last two months, but they can’t rely on him for scoring in this series as long as KG is guarding him. Joe and Teague, possibly even Willie Green and Pargo off the bench, have to step up and carry more of the load.

If this is true, then Shawn Bradley shoild be looking at one game himself. When the Phoenix bench stepped over the white line in front of their bench, and never marched up court, they were all suspended one game versus the Spurs.
Stern don’t play with the rule book. Rondo is a repeat offender and may get more than one game in this second instance of the same violation. He need to be stopped before somebody get’s hurt.

i’ll try dmb,
ramon, simple stuff dude. if a muscle isnt used it atrophies to next to nothing. if you dont use it you lose it. next, if you dont use it and it is immobile it stiffens up and contracts even if it is healthy which is what he had to do and remain immobile in a non functional position for six weeks, bathing sleeping having sex, you name it. what happens here is the flexor muscles tighten up, i. e. the biceps, to not allow the extensor, the triceps, to extend. that has to be done under manipulation and slowly strengthening the triceps back to normal. the bigger muscles take over. on top of that the operation itself is using soft tissue, like the beef you buy at the market with no integrity, sew it hoping when you attach it to the bone, it holds. now are you getting it? finally, the only way it “heals” is through tough scar tissue that must be broken down and remolded into something functional and resembling the real stuff. all the while the other healthy side is atrophying as well because you cant work it out to keep it strong. plus, there is obviously an energy imbalance between the two when you start using it.
now, if you got to grab a basketball and hold onto it or throw an arm up to block a shot and the mobility and strength is not there then what the f*ck good are you all the while risking a retear of the torn tissue while haviong garnett rip it out of your ams as you play the best conditioned athletes in the world? and yeah ramon you are doubting his toughness. the doc didnt serve him well to suggest he play at 70% and may show he doesnt know jack about competing at this level. certain injuries you can support and play on. some you cant are; an acl injury. did you see rose collapse when he got out as his femur slipped forward over his tibia?, an elbow repair, ever see a pitcher come back in shorter than one year? and another is a torn pectoralis. got it now?

IDK that to be a fact, but, if it is … that’s probably what is taking so long, that and the fine amount.

O’Brien, I wasn’t questioning Al’s commitment at all. To date, I just didn’t recall seeing Al ever having to play through an injury. And I remember seeing Josh and Joe play through injuries quite often. For instance, Kobe plays through injuries all the time, but I’ve never seen Vince Carter really play through an injury. Now do I question Al’s physical toughness? Of course, without a doubt I do. But his commitment, I don’t question that (and yes those are two different things). The injury Al suffered, isn’t an injury that occurs often in the NBA. If it would’ve been a leg injury (ACL or MCL), then I would’ve had a better understanding of it from being more familiar with it from a fan’s perspective, not a medical student’s perspective. Also, I didn’t know the exact date, but I did think the injury was closer to the beginning of January than the middle, that’s why I said 4-5 months. But even you stated that his given time was 3-4 months recovery, and this is 3 1/2 months now. So why wouldn’t I wonder if Josh or Joe (known fast healers – remember Josh’s Wolverine like article Sekou did seasons ago), would be able to play by now in spot duty with the same injury.
DrMaryb, I take breaks off the blogs sometimes now, after seeing a few say the same things, lol. So I regrettably missed Doc’s post. But in short terms, is it more so the pain or the strength in the muscle that is taking the longest to recover now?
O’Brien, when you have a 16 point lead, and it drops to 10-11 points with your starters on the bench, that is the time to take a timeout, buy your star players 3-4 minutes of rest, and then put at least one or two back in the game after that timeout. Also, it appears the bench doesn’t get out and run as much as the starters do. And I believe that is the reason why the bench struggled on last night.
Isn’t it funny how the media is saying that if Rondo doesn’t get ejected, the Celtics likely win that game? However, after the free throws, the Hawks go up by 7. If you take away the Joe Johnson’s tech free throw (he missed one), the Hawks are still up by 6, and you’re saying more than likely Boston (who was 0′for – from beyond the arc) hits two threes and gets three stops on defense without fouling.
By the way, if Marvin can’t guard Pierce or Garnett in this series, isn’t it better to have Vlad in sometimes?

I like the win last night. I think we will continue to have offensive lulls with Collins in the line up because he simply gives you nothing offensively. Running pick and rolls with him guarantees jumps shots. I will they’d do more round the horn type screens for Teague where he can come off the third or fourth screen and go towards the basket. Better yet, hopefully Zaza can come back to the line up by the time we get to game 3.

It’s not like we are not happy with the win. My voice is just starting to come back after last night. But we want a series win, not just a Game 1 win, and to do that the Hawks will have to do some things better. Pointing that out isn’t negativity.
Well, umm, yes it is negativity. We all need to appreciate the GAME 1 win since we have ONLY PLAYED 1 game. Its called the best out of 7 for a reason. No need to point out negative things based on a win that the Celtics had against us earlier in the regular season in the same exact fashion.

What if we were in Boston shoes last night and of course Boston were in ours, how then would we respond to our beloved Hawks?? What if Boston posted a 20-6 lead on us in the opening quarter? What if Josh was Rondo last night? What if Al Horford was Ray Allen? Oh, well, maybe he was since they are both hurt. My point is, be proud that the Atlanta (quiet but mature-natured) Hawks WERE the Hawks last night and NOT Boston (cry baby) Celtics.

To date, I just didn’t recall seeing Al ever having to play through an injury..
Except for 14 games missed in 2009, Al has been pretty reliable (healthwise). Prior to this season, the number of games Al played in was 81, 67, 81, and 77 last year. That’s 306 games out of a possible 328 regular season games (93%) in 4 years. So I’m sure this is new for him.

Josh Smith and JJ are options 1A and 1B on this Hawks team. So if you’re Josh, and you see JJ making $20 mil, while you’re only making $13 mil…how much would you want from the Hawks on your next deal (especially if Josh keeps up this high level of play in the playoff).
I think Josh will want $16 – $18 mil on his contract. Anyways, that will be a discussion for after the playoffs.
As for your boy Woody

Admittedly, before you just explaining it now, I didn’t know the extent of the injury, only knew the time frame that was reported. And you’re correct pitchers wouldn’t come back from an arm injury before a year majority of the time. But I didn’t see the same standards being applied, because Al isn’t asked to throw 70-100 hard as he can, so I didn’t see it being that type of injury (I actually think pitching in the MLB is the toughest job in ALL of sports, because all the pressure is on you). But I understand now. And as I said yes, I was curious about his toughness, but not his commitment.

ra’mon, have suggested that maybe al has the strength os a high schooler trying to play in a mans game with the worlds best. fractured arm would have been better than what he had. can you imagine what force was behind having the muscle covering your chest wall ripped off of you and how much that would hurt? good article to read btw, i hope you took the time to read it, i also think fans are a bit cavalier about what they see as though it is all that easy doing it among the absolute best in the game night after night. we weekend warriors dont come close though we make an industry out of our day to day injuries that keep us from work and form using a typewriter then criticize these guys if they arent healthy in the least amount of time. it was an injury that was expected to take 6 to 9 months, not sure why they projected much less. shoot, hinrich came back quicker than most.
a pitcher gets five nights off to rest, al would get less than 48 hours after pushing and shoving grabbing and pulling all the while waving his arm in every direction possible. there is a huge difference and one is about shoulder girdle strength the other about timing and arm speed with lower body strength more so than upper body strength. i pitched.
also pitchers dont come back in three months time from and shoulder reconstruction either ya know, if at all?

In the 2009 playoffs, Hawks had home court, and beat Miami by 26 points in game 1. And then we lost game 2 by 15. We lost game 3 by 29, and won game 4 by 10.
Very inconsistent. Hopefully this year’s Hawks will not make the mistakes those Hawks did. I think we are a better team now, and we have a better coach than we did back then.
doc,
Hawks have the record for most lopsided post season series loss in NBA history, being outscored by 101 points against Orlando. Since the Knicks just lost game 1 by 33, maybe Woody can help the Hawks out, by helping the Knicks to get the record.

Paul Pierce has not had good games against the Hawks this year because of injuries, Joe’s defense and Ray Allen. Ray Allen spaces the floor, and allows Pierce to get to his spots. Without Ray Allen, Pierce is much easier to guard, especially since a lot of his explosion is gone. Same principles apply to Joe, except Pierce has stepped up in crunch time much more than Joe.

O’Brien, I think those series in which they had let downs were learning experiences for this team (mainly Joe and Josh). Also, you could say only 5 or so players who actually played major minutes in 2009 playoffs, are still playing now (i.e. the bench). The Hawks appeared quite mature in last season’s postseason play. However despite their lapses at moments, the Hawks have yet to lose any playoff series where they were the best team on the court talent wise. Last years Bulls’ team and 2009 Magics’ team (much different than the 2010 team the Hawks beat), were a more talented team without question. Out of the three best players in this series, two are Hawks. This series, the Hawks are the more talented team, even without Zaza and Al. And also, this season the Hawks have won way more closed games than I remember them doing since Steve Smith was here.
In Game 2 look for Teague to be even more aggressive also. No one can stay in front of him. And now Doc has KG shadowing Josh on the perimeter, so the lanes will be free of any shot blockers. In my mind, the biggest test of the series will be the first quarter of game three. If the Hawks come out running and playing aggressive IN BOSTON, they will win the series in 5 or 6 games. The last time the Celtics saw the Hawks in Boston, majority of the Hawks were ‘playoff rookies’. Well I can make the case that playing in the hostile environment of Chicago is just as difficult as playing in Boston. And the Hawks won in Chicago!
The funny part about the series is even if the Hawks swept the Celtics, the story would be the ‘demise of Big Three’, not the coming out of Atlanta. And Atlanta would still be MAJOR underdogs against Chicago without Rose.

Several points:
*[watched Rondo replay again several angles]
* Stephen A Smith is an imbecile:
based on his attempted argument in Rondo`s behalf.
* Getting one`s headband ripped off is most assuredly a ‘`foul`’
and not a jump-ball … at least back in the day.
I think the rule for jump-ball reads:
-dual possession-
*’`not`’*
player ‘`A`’ holding the ball …..
while opposing player ‘`B`’ …..
holds player ‘`A`s`’ headband simultaneously ?
* Rondo made all kids of contact with the Ref
before he chest bunped the guy.
He tripped, stumbled due to going after the Ref and basically
walking up his leg.
No wonder he stumbled.
Also the Ref could not see and had no idea of intent.
Rondo knew better.
It wasn`t even his place to be there, for any reason.
He touched the Ref by stepping on the back of his leg.
Really more of a bump with his knee than his foot.
* Two game minimum
* After reading Donaghy`s book ‘`Personal Foul`’
If Rondo don`t get at least two games; the officials will make him pay !
* Yawl need to read that book … stern`s a crook /// – yes poetry -

LOL @ people hating on me for being “negative” after last night’s game.
I actually like this roster very much in this series. I just think there’s some CHANGES and BETTER PERFORMANCES we need from certain players.
1) T-Mac + Joe in the game at the same time. Attack whoever their SG is guarding
2) Joe and Josh: BETTER PASSES.
3) Teague: Do not be timid for 1 second on the court. Take open shots. Attack the basket.
Just like my comments last night, THESE AREN’T NEGATIVE COMMENTS. These are damn good observations that, if better utilized last night, would have won us the game by 20 points. We do need to use starters with the 2nd unit.
Pargo + Willie just can’t get it done. These guys only take jumpshots. We need to attack the basket. That means Pargo should try get in the lane or these guys should be decoys for T-Mac, who the BALL SHOULD RUN THROUGH EVERY SINGLE TIME HE IS IN THE GAME (which is usually when Joe is out). T-Mac needs to look for his damn shot. He had a few good looks last night, but was feeding it to Collins (who actually is a lot better than most people here think. An okay backup center).
Damn, I haven’t even mentioned Marvin yet. I co-sign Rod from College Park 2000000%. Give T-Mac all of Marvin’s minutes. If this guy is going to score 2 points, miss all his *OPEN* jumpshots, and play sucky defense, he should not be on ANY Playoff Roster. I think he was our worst bench player last night, and that’s just sad.
I find it amazing how several people here said Marvin had been playing well as of the end of this regular season. Look at his game log. Every 3 games he manages to score 4 or 6 points. That is pathetic. He had a huge game vs. a Knicks team that didn’t guard him (if you actually watch the games, you realize that no one actually guards this guy and his jumpshots are seldom contested).
Northcyde, nice 8 Mile rap. I know all those freestyle battle verses by heart LOL.
I don’t think LD has been that bad so far in this series. He just needs to use some starters with the bench.
Damn those Rondo Technicals changed the whole game. I believe right before then Pierce missed a 3 that would’ve cut it to 3. Joe played solid D on Pierce. Hopefully Pierce plays like that the whole series. Nothing much you can do about KG – that dude was amazing in last night’s game.
Amazing how quickly Rondo got ejected after that 2nd T. Was almost like the ref was expecting it. From where I was sitting, I couldn’t really see the bump. I thought Rondo was just screaming some awful ish at the ref. Looks like Rondo did trip too and had no idea the ref was going to stop (as Rondo said).

ROFL! Go look at his game log. He had a worse game than anyone else on the team last night.
However, he is still a top 20 SF.

Are the Celtics ready to play without Rondo? “We’re preparing to have him at this point until we hear otherwise,” said captain Paul Pierce, who later added, “We don’t know if he’s going to get suspended now. I looked at it again and it looked real minor to me. We just gotta wait and see what the NBA says.” ESPN.com

Add another name to the ever-expanding list of Kevin Garnett critics. Hawks rookie forward Ivan Johnson became the latest to join the chorus this afternoon after Hawks practice. “Garnett, he’s a dirty player,” Johnson said. “He gives me a lot of elbows, and I can handle that.” Johnson said he expected that Garnett and the Celtics would attempt to do things to incite a reaction. “I was prepared for that,” Johnson said. “I already knew how KG was going to come at me. They’re a whole bunch of mess-talkers.” Boston Herald

Talking to the Po-Po of the NFL, who works with Merton Hanks (Ex 49er) and, determines the penalty fines for players hits on other players that are in question. One thing stood out, he said they look comprehensively at past history to determine a players intent, because they can not read minds to determine intent.

Rod,
One reason for Paul Pierce’s struggles against the Hawks (not counting last night) was because of Marvin’s top notch defense. Agree or disagree?
The issue with marvin (imo) is even when he puts up 12 and 6 in 24 minutes, it does not come against good teams, or it comes early in the game. When the game gets tight, and a big shot is needed late, very rarely does Marvin deliver, regardless of what kind of game he is having.
One compliment for Marvin. On 790 the zone, they said Rick Sund referred to Marvin as the most professional player he has coached, for what it’s worth.
Ra’mon,
This team is more talented, and hopefully the Hawks wont have a let down in game 2 just because Rondo probably isnt playing.
If the Hawks can beat Boston, there is a possibility of having Zaza and Al back in the lineup against Chicago. And we would need all the front court help we can get.

Rondo made no effort to stop his momentum after “tripping” (i.e., stepping on the ref’s foot because he was in the ref’s face), and in fact poked his chest out to complete the bump and “make his point.”
Clearly intentional. He’s fortunate he got off w/only a 1-game suspension.
He and Rivers then followed up by blatantly lying about the incident. Should be more penalties tacked on for their shameless comments.

Nono, anal as in a thorough breakdown of what Marvin really meant to the win last night. Not a negative by any means!
So now the key matchup Tuesday will be Dooling or Bradley vs. Teague. We’ve just been exposed to this lineup. Look for Marquis Daniels to try and fill the void as well.
How pumped would you be to see our guys go up 2-0 heading to Boston?

Pressure will always bust a pipe. Marvin can’t produce in pressure situations because he gets scared. He has no confidence. Boston has recognized that as well. Anytime Marvin was in the game guarding Pierce, they iso Pierce on Marvin and went right at him. The only tiime Pierce got going was when Marvin was guarding him.

“”Obviously from a competitive standpoint we are disappointed with the league’s decision to suspend Rondo,” C’s coach Doc Rivers said in a statement. “He plays a valuable part in our team’s success. We accept the punishment and will use it as a learning tool for our players.”
Doc upset because of it being a competitive limitation. He’s not interested in the right call; he’s interested in the call going his way.
Good thing that call wasn’t made at the TD Garden. It would’ve been a no call. I can hear Steve Holman now.

Game 2 with no Rondo should be a win. What we all need to understand is that even though we played well and won the game, we still only scored 82 points. We had 31 points at the end of the first quarter. That means we averaged 17points a quarter for the other 3 quarters. Boston obviously adjusted, and Teague and Josh bailed us out. I am the biggest Josh fan here, but those jumpers are not going to fall in Boston. We have to be able to score the basketball better than that.

Game 2 shouldn’t even be close because Rondo kept them in the game last night. I don’t think the Celtics can overcome that blow to their offense. With that said, the Hawks have to come out and punch them in the mouth early so there is no doubt. Garnett will not go another half without scoring. Have to watch for Pietrius and Bass next game. They didn’t have good games so they will be ready to play.

Well, Teague showed up in Game 1. There’s always the possibility of a letdown, and that the Hawks will coast in Game 2 because they think they have it in the bag with Rondo out. Hopefully these guys will have a killer instinct and get that win.
Honestly, I predicted Celtics in 6 on Hoopinion, but if I’m the Hawks, my mentality is to sweep the Celtics. Get this Game 2 win, then go up to Boston and win Game 3. The Hawks could have swept ORL last year but instead they let it go 6 games and lost Kirk. You can say “well that was great for us because Teague emerged,” but maybe he would have emerged anyway… you never know.
What we do know is that if the Hawks want to go to the ECF this year, they need to sweep the Celtics and then rest up and get ready for the CHI-PHI winner.

“One compliment for Marvin. On 790 the zone, they said Rick Sund referred to Marvin as the most professional player he has coached, for what it’s worth.” – O’brien
That just shows you [that] Marvin [Williams] is polite, courteous and respectful to [the] Atlanta Hawks’ coaching staff and [executive] management because he, Marvin Williams, knows he is grossly overpaid for what he does/contributes/produces as a member of the Hawks’ team.
Let me give you an “everyday” example of Marvin Williams. Take an individual who only has a H.S. diploma that gets a job as an Accounts Payable clerk with a Fortune 500 company. The Fortune 500 company inexplicably pays the newly-hired Accounts Payable [AP] clerk a salary of $120,000/year. Do you think that newly-hired AP clerk is going to be the “company trouble-maker”
or one of the those “nice, team-player” type of employees? Marvin Williams is an example of the latter [employee].
P.S. Marvin Williams is a good cheerleader, however, the Atlanta Hawks already have a cheerleader/dance team.

If we want this to be a quick series, we will win tomorrow night. Let Celtics win tomorrow night and the series will go at least 6 games, either way.
Need Joe and others to step up tomorrow and put this damn team way. Also, I believe Ray is doubtful for tomorrow.
Tear these guy’s heads off tomorrow. Don’t let those dirty !@#%^bags breathe for one second
It’s doubtful we can beat the Bulls, even without Rose. They owned us by 21 in our own arena without him.
Until Teague consistently attacks, we will be a good/decent team. He should be laying it up every single time, not getting timid when he gets to the hoop (as Hugo just said)
