Atlanta Hawks: Hawks-Celtics notes and quotes
9:23 pm April 30, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
- Zaza Pachulia (foot) is expected to miss Game 2. He’s now able to do some light walking on a treadmill but still is wearing a boot to keep pressure off the injury.
- Doc Rivers said he doesn’t expect Ray Allen to play in Game 2: “If he is not ready, he’s not ready. One thing I will never do, and maybe I’m wrong in it, I don’t ever put a guy out who is not ready. I just won’t put him on the floor. If Ray told me in thought he could play tomorrow and [team trainer] Eddie [Lacerte] told me he could not, Ray would not play. That’s just the way it is.”
- Larry Drew before the Rajon Rondo suspension came down from the league: “Certainly it changes things a little bit but, with or without him, they’ve shown they can win. They are a veteran ballclub. They’ve been in those situations where they’ve had players out. Certainly whether he is there or not we can’t let our guards down. Until we get the official word of whether he’s available or not, we are going to factor him in. Like I told our guys, this is the playoffs, and there are things that happen throughout the course of the playoffs that can change things. But you can’t at any time relax or let your guard down. You have to be a team on a mission.”
- Jeff Teague: “They are still a good team. They’ve won games without Rondo this year. [Avery] Bradley is a good player. Last game we played him here he had 28 points so we don’t take anyone lightly or take a step down.
- Bradley: “I just have to bring the ball up the floor a little bit more. But it’s gonna feel like a regular game to me. I’ve just got to continue to play at the intensity I play at, get our team into our offense, and play the way I’ve been playing.”
- Keyon Dooling on what Celtics lose without Rondo: “I think it’s obvious. He’s a double-double. He led the league in assists. Obviously for our shooting bigs, he gets them open looks. For our shooters from the wing spots, he gets them open looks. Not having him in there, we have to rely more on [Paul Pierce's] scoring and [Kevin Garnett's] post-ups. We’re just going to have to do some of the little things to make up for not having Rondo.”
- Dooling on if he could start: “I don’t know if that will be the case. Usually when [Rondo] doesn’t play, we slide Avery over to the point guard and bring in another guy into the two-guard position. This will be another opportunity to get a chance to play. I’ve played in the playoffs several times. I know how to play in the playoffs.”
- Doc Rivers on the play preceding Rondo’s ejection: “It’s funny, I actually told Brandon [Bass] when I watched it live–it’s amazing how your eyes get it wrong–I told Brandon i thought it was a foul, that [official] Marc [Davis] made the right call. When I watched it again, I apologized to [Bass]. It should have been a jump ball. Having said all that, we’ve gotta control our emotions, no doubt about that. We talked about that two days ago as a team. I rarely have those type of meetings, and i did. Now I’m wishing i hadn’t. Maybe if I had not talked about it, nothing would’ve happened. But, it is what it is. We’ll be ready for whichever way they go.”
- Drew said he will use the same starting lineup in Game 2. Does he expect Garnett to take Jason Collins off the dribble more often? “Possibly. We will have to cross that bridge when it comes. For the most part with ‘KG’ out on the perimeter, we will take our chances and try to force him into tough shots.”
- Fired up the Synergy Sports machine and did a rundown of the 11 possessions Garnett used against Collins:
Assist to Bradley on a cut after Bradley rubbed Kirk Hinrich off Garnett’s screen.
Missed a J on solid closeout by Collins.
Missed a fadeaway J on left baseline on strong challenge by Collins.
Missed a fadeaway J after Collins cut off drive to right.
Caught an alley-oop dunk when Collins was back-picked
Assist (while under pressure by Collins) to Dooling, who received cross-court pass and went by Willie Green.
Assist to Brandon Bass, who made fadeaway post J under pressure by Josh Smith.
Missed a turnaround J on left block on strong challenge by Collins.
Made a pick-and-pop J that Collins basically conceded to help on ball-handler.
Missed a pick-and-pop J on slow closeout by Collins.
Made a spot-up J after Collins got caught in a switch.
Made a turnaround J on strong challenge from Collins.
Made a spot-up J on weak closeout by Collins.
Made a layup as roll man over good challenge by Collins.
- Synergy confirmed what my naked (on deadline) eye perceived in Game 1: Joe Johnson missed a lot of open Js. Six of his 12 misses were (subjectively) open jump shots. Another three were challenged but the kind of shots we’ve seen Joe make regularly. Joe missed four wide open spot-up 3-point attempts that were created by Josh, with two of those on the break, one off a Josh post-up and another on a Josh drive.
- Joe’s 0.5 points per possession were second-worse for the Hawks behind Marvin Williams‘ 0.4. Hinrich led the team with 1.33 points per possession, Jannero Pargo was next at 1.25 ppp and Jeff Teague was third at 1.15. Collins was fourth at one point per possession.
- Teague on getting Joe going: “He got the shots he wanted, they just didn’t go down. On his isolations they were crowding up on him and bumping him a lot. Sometimes we have just got to cut more and get more player movement. If we do that, he will get more openings to make his moves. For me, in the corners, they were helping out of the corners so I am going to cut [from] off the corners more and give him more room to operate.”
- Joe: “When I went back and looked at [video], even the times I had Paul ‘iso’d’ we were just kind of standing around and waiting. And then ‘KG’ came in one time and that’s when all the chaos happened. It’s part of the game. We will make adjustments, I will make adjustments and see what I can do to be more effective.”
- Drew on the stagnation when Joe has the ball: “We have a tendency to sort of start standing. At times we lack the movement we should have when he has the basketball. The other thing is we became too one-sided instead of running our stuff, trying to get the basketball to the other side and force the defense to shift and then try to attack. We look at offense and clearly see where we get in trouble when we spend too much time on one side. When we do that we become a standstill team with too much isolation, and we become a lot easier to defend.”
- Drew on if it’s on Joe to be quicker moving the ball: “It’s on everybody. It’s whatever we run, we have to make sure we get ball reversal and when we have to attack off the reversal.”
- Joe on the team’s defense: “That’s something you can bring every night. The way we were defensively, contesting shots, playing passing lanes, being relentless out there that’s the way we’ve got to play every game this series.”
- Drew on pulling Ivan Johnson out of the game after the two had a spirited exchange following Ivan’s foul in the fourth quarter: “I probably overreacted. I grabbed Ivan after the game walking through the tunnel and told him to give me a hug. I’m not afraid to admit when I’m wrong about something. I probably overreacted. I need that type energy and that type aggrression, I thought he made a really good foul. I was looking at the matchup, too. I really wanted to keep Jason matched up with ‘KG’ as much as I could.”
- Ivan on his interaction with the official: “The ref made a bad call, he admitted it, and I let it go.”
- Ivan on KG: “Garnett, he’s a dirty player. He gives me a lot of elbows. But I can handle that.”
- Ivan said he doesn’t retaliate because “[refs] are looking at me the whole game. I try not to because I’m usually the one that gets caught.”
- Joe on Ivan being a different kind of dude: “It’s a good difference. He brings a different dimension to the team that we haven’t had in a long time. He’s not scared of anything. He just goes out and plays the same way every night.”
- Jon on if he calls Ivan “Rook,”which is standard among NBA teams: “I call him Ivan.”
- Doc Rivers on Game 1: “I think [the Hawks] came out with the right attack mode and I think we came out thinking that our jerseys were going to win the game: ‘We are the Celtics.’ You have to play basketball. When you’ve had success it’s easy to lean back on your past success and forget than no one really cares,” he said. “It’s what you do tomorrow. It’s not what you did yesterday.”

If I sounded negative after Game 1, this is why. Yeah, Joe will probably do better, but Marvin is likely to do just as bad, and Kirk and Pargo (maybe even Teague) are likely to regress. To combat that, Joe has to get a lot better and the Hawks as a whole have to get better shots. I still say they can’t rely on Josh for efficient scoring as long as KG is guarding him. KG guards Josh about as intelligently as anyone in the league, always overplaying his left knowing that Josh will shoot a jumper if he can’t go left against him.

I’m a Celts fan from way back, but Rondo was intentional in bumping the ref, tape shows it. He was upset from the previous call Davis blew when Josh Smith knocked the ball out of bounds at the Celtics end, and then this call, which was a close one, sent him over the top. But, calls are calls, and I saw a few shoves by the Celtics under the hoop that didn’t get called. You play the game and you win it, pure and simple. A loss should not be blamed on an official supposedly blowing a call. I thought Doc’s take was pretty good on it as well, he did note Rondo crossed the line.
______________________
A fair assessment–except as it relates to Doc, who was in major denial about “the chest bump” following last night’s game. As for Rondo, he just straight-up lied about it. Morals don’t matter though. Hawks have to guard against complacency Tuesday night with Rondo out. Celtics will feed off of it.

________
I don’t you sounded negative after game 1. You were there and gave constructive criticism. I tend to look at a bloggers historical body of work to a large part, because it tells a bigger part of any story. I typically find, you Najeh to be very objective, fair and insightful.
I for one, come and go with my views as others have convinced me to look at my opinions and, move off some of my stuff. But, only with sound reasoning and supported facts and stats, at times I will shift one way or another.
Then, there are to dooms day people, who bring negativity – no matter what. There was a ton of them last night and this morning, I just had to log off. I’ve been reading a ton of outside blogs, from Boston and from all over the world. I honestly couldn’t differentiate the world haters from the Hawks blog haters. Disbelief, was all I could say. I actually thought the Hawks had lost, or backed into a win last night.
But no, Najeh does not fit that category, it’s not even close. As many others on here, don’t either.

“able to do some light walking on a treadmill”??? See you next round, Za. I hope.
The main concern about tomorrow’s game has got to be the Hawks playing down to a weakened opponent. We’ve been better about it this season, but there is still a tendency to let up off the gas when our opponent isn’t at full strength. This is the playoffs. You shouldn’t need every marquee player on the opposing team in the lineup for you to get hyped.
Also, we are still getting less than a sliver of respect from the national media. Let’s keep using that as fire. These “experts” seem to be using the same logic Doc warned against after game one– the Celtics will win because of their jerseys. How insightful!

I honestly feel like Rondo was just trying to follow the ref and yell at him so more. He tripped over a teammate and the ref stopped, so Rondo bumped into him. I don’t think it was intentional, but he made contact with a ref, so it’s a suspension regardless.

@JeJe if it wasn’t for that lax their-stars-aren’t-playing-so-neither-are-we performance, Ivan Johnson would be back in the D-League by now. If there’s one trait LD acquired from his former boss, it is an utter disdain for giving rookies any opportunity to sniff the floor. Getting cut was a blessing in disguise, Kito!
Yes, we’ve been better about not playing down, but it’s still the Hawks, and we’re still Hawks fans. Hence, we know better than to expect them to play with the same intensity they would if Rondo were playing tomorrow night. Prove me wrong, fellas.

dmb, the extensors are the most likely to be cut. important nerves less so as they run along the medio-lateral surfaces of the fingers and inside the hand to the muscles as well as nerves right beside them. however, there could be a tangle of extensor tendons for sure as well as soft tissue injury and venous structures. so opening his hand will be affected if he had his fist balled up. all bets off if he was slapping at it like a girl. heh heh

Knicks actually gave a good effort. Bottom line you have to have ball moment and a penetrating point guard and length that can rebound which are the Heats biggest weakness. That is why the only teams in the playoffs in the East that can give the Heat trouble are Indiana, Chicago and Atlanta especially if Atlanta can get Zaza back. I dont see Boston doing it. They are aging and injuries have caught up to them. I do not expect Horford to play until next season. If you look at all the Hawks Heat games they have all gone down to the wire and I stated before Hawks matchup decent against the Heat.
The leagues making this Heat team as some all time great. Their offense isnt any different from ISO ball difference is they play very good overall team defense and have good individual one on one players.
In a lot of way tomorrow is a must win for the Hawks. If Hawks win tomorrow, I can see them get a split in Boston and close it out in 5. If they lose, probably will be a seven game series. Boston and Atlanta are very evenly matched teams

“I actually thought the Hawks had lost, or backed into a win last night.”
Well, they kinda did. If a jump ball was called and Boston wins the jump and scores a quick two, lets say within 10 seconds, then it’s Hawks ball with 31 seconds to play and a 2-point lead. That assures Boston of having the final possession. Honestly, the Hawks were choking majorly until Rondo bailed them out.
“we have to put our foot on their necks and press down hard”
As I said in a previous blog, even though I have picked Boston in 6, if I’m the Hawks my only goal is a sweep. But the Hawks did not show a killer instinct in Game 1. Interesting that LD admits a mistake with regard to punitively benching Ivan in the fourth quarter. Collins played great… I didn’t even know it was possible for him to play that well. But he was clearly gassed as early as the third quarter.
KG went to work on Collins and Boston had a chance to win at the end before Rondo’s meltdown. If the Hawks lost that game or if they lose Game 2, THEN you are going to see some negativity. You won’t hear a lot of LD coach of the year talk if that happens.
But I still think the situation with Ivan works out. Even if LD admits he overreacted, Ivan still got to watch from the bench while Rondo killed his team by losing his composure. Ivan will be thinking about that the next time he doesn’t like a call. That likely means he’ll be able to stay on the floor and not get yanked by LD or get in trouble with the refs. He was needed in that fourth quarter. Collins slowed KG down as much as he could and it was barely enough.
For those of you who don’t think Ivan can guard KG, that’s fine. But with Ivan in the game, Josh can guard KG and Ivan can guard Bass.

doc, Hoopinion does not have credentialed access to Hawks games. So I’m essentially a guy watching the games in his living room and writing what I’m able to observe about them. As MC has taken pains to point out, I’m just a fan.
Sometimes that lets me catch stuff I would have otherwise missed such as Toronto Raptors color analyst Sherman Hamilton’s report that Hawk front office personnel told him Ivan Johnson was suspended for calling out the whole team for lack of effort in the loss at Boston. The play by play guy then cracked, “from what we’ve seen, it was a message they needed to hear.” He was referring to the previous game when Toronto beat a Hawks team that failed to show up.
I’ve been to a number of games this year. I took my wife to the Utah game and she hates basketball, so she got to sit through something like the 4th-longest game in NBA history lol. But I haven’t bought tickets for any of the Boston games yet. If they make it to the second round I may go to one of the games.

buddy i have a czech girlfriend with a soccer/hockey background who has fortunately able to get it to some degree. heh heh, last year she hated number 2 and 5 because they couldnt shoot and liked zaza as he was eastern euro. she did make ninse at the right time and came along. this year she is more pleased with 2 and 5 and has taken a liking to 0. kind of fun to see her reactiuons and how well she sees the game. of course it got a little hectic for her as rondo got tossed and having to explain it was a challenge. anyway been there since the first games with boston and havent missed one. would love to say i got to see an ecf before i get tired of this sport because honestly i am sort of over the major sports thing, keep up with it but had a passion for it before and none now. even payed baseball at a fairly high level in college pitching against some of the sec and big ten schools and really missed ti when i gave it up for a career.
anyway you wont get any bs from me. i will pass on anything interesting i pick up along the way tomorrow when i get home. i was a bit surprised that the ivan story came out a bit later but glad it did and hope ld and ivan have learned something from it. ld gotta be strong on it but not stupid and he was on the edge of losing it because he was determined to teach ivan a lesson rather than win a game.

Well it sounds to me like LD is politicking. He doesn’t really think he made a mistake, but he’s casting Ivan in a favorable light to the media. The Hawks organization should have done this a long time ago with Josh… done something to counter the negative aspects of his image. I think that’s just going to make Ivan want to play harder for Drew, and want to not screw up and get in trouble with the refs. I don’t think Collins can play at a high level 35 minutes a night so the Hawks are going to need Ivan.

Talking to the Po-Po of the NFL, who works with Merton Hanks (Ex 49er) and, determines the penalty fines for players hits on other players that are in question. One thing stood out, he said they look comprehensively at past history to determine a players intent, because they can not read minds to determine intent.
Rondo, now has a wrap sheet for this behavior. It is his MO (method of operandis)now. History repeats. Didn’t he throw the ball at a referee earleir this season, striking him in the chest, and was suspended two games? Rondo is lucky it wasn’t three games this time, on a progressive scale of punishment. There is that “C” word agaon, “chest”.

doc, nice breakdown of the hand structures. Can you imagine that, being a trauma/vascular surgeon in ER. having to work on “idiots” all day long? Myself, being a chiropractor, my hands are my life, my money maker, much like a boxer. No hands … no eats!
Doesn’t Amare’ need his left hand too? How will he rebound the ball and block shots now? (smh) Boy, these playoffs have the players going stark mad. LOL

HCA Matters! (just ask Doc)
All the home teams won last night. Only Indiana has lost HCA. I like this trend and am sure Atlanta will not lose HCA tonight.
Going on the road up 2-0 will be huge and almost insurmountable for the Celtics. The Hawks are the better team right now and, right now is all that matters. Playing aboove ground and not from a deep hole, is the way to go.

I’m surprised that I’m thinking this, but I believe in the Hawks.
They will not overlook this game tonight. They will be mentally prepared. They will not lay an egg, but bring their “A” game.
My only concern is Jeff Teague. Every so often he has lead feet defensively and offensively. If he can exploit the Rondo suspension the game will be an easy win for the Hawks.
Once the Hawks take the 2-0 lead in the series they are in a position to take the series in 5 games.
My surprise is fueled by the fact that the Hawks are doing this without Zaza and Horford.

Knicks Stoudemire injures hand after loss… punching fire extinguisher?
Kurt Helin May 1, 2012, 12:37 AM EDT

Reuters
May 1, 12:37 am: Amare Stoudemire tweeted this:
I am so mad at myself right now, I want to apologize to the fans and my team, not proud of my actions, headed home for a new start
April 30, 11:01 pm: This is the most intensity Amare Stoudemire has shown all playoffs.
Frustrated after he seemed to stand around all game watching the offense run through Carmelo Anthony on the way to another Knicks playoff loss, Amare Stoudemire punched a glass-encased fire extinguisher on his way back to the locker room, sources told Ken Berger of CBSSports.com, as well as other reports on twitter. That led to lacerations on his hand that needed to be stitched up, according to multiple reports.
There was a busted up fire extinguisher case near the Knicks locker room. The Knicks confirmed Stoudemire hurt himself after the game but no details. We don’t know if this was a “classic” punch or just him slamming the side of his hand into the extinguisher case in frustration as he walked past.
What we do know is that there was a lot of blood, paramedics put some stitches into Stoudemire’s left hand (we don’t know how many) and he left the arena with his hand in a bandage and his arm in a sling. He is not getting X-rays (yet) and he is leaving New York with the team.
His status for Game 3 Thursday is currently unknown.
Coach Mike Woodson as well as Carmelo Anthony both said they did not know what happened or have any updates on Stoudemire.
The Knicks should be frustrated. But while Stoudemire has not played great this series he is a threat and if he is out it allows the Heat to turn their focus more toward Anthony and other Knicks threats. Basically, this isn’t good.
__________
Amare’ should be moved next season. He is already “uninsurable” and, this latest act does not help any. Question is: Who will take his 100M contract on, The Brookly Nets with DWill? Money certainly would not be an issue over there. Melo, (a super star ball hog who never passes)and Amare’ can not co-exist on the same roster.
Poor Woodson.

Get the ball out of JJ’s hands. He plays better without the ball. He is not quick enough and he can not dribble good enough to handle the ball against good teams.
I am tired of hearing Doc Rivers view of the Bass foul. Rivers is biased. Who cares what he thinks? Bass fouled Josh big time and it is time for someone to actually say, “Bass fouled Smith”.

Mike Woodson has lost his last 6 playoff games as a HC by 43, 14, 30, 14, 33, and 10. A good man, but not a good coach (and it is magnified in the playoffs). Give me LD over Woody (and I’m not a big fan of LD).
16 shots TOTAL for Amare in 2 games, while Carmelo got 41 shots. And where is the ball movement? The Knicks had just 15 assists on 38 made field goals last night.
I am rooting for Woody, but I have not seen anything out of him this series to suggest that he deserves the coaching job full time.

As for JJ, we have been talking about it all season. If he is going Iso, He needs to go quicker. Why is it so hard for him to understand?
However, LD should not let it come to that. Run the offense through Josh and Jeff.

obrien,
big problem with knicks no penetrating point guard with lin hurt, no shumpert, davis shot, fields not a 2 guard. also woodson not creative on offense and amare shell of his former self.
knicks would be better off if they can trading amare for a stretch big man like. luis scola or andrea bargani which would fit more in the team flow offense. the problem is amare contract is uninsurable. knicks have had about 5 different teams since beginning of season. biggest problem is carmelo and amare are one way players. amare is more of a small forward and melo plays better at the 4

“As for Rondo, he just straight-up lied about it. Morals don’t matter though. Hawks have to guard against complacency Tuesday night with Rondo out. Celtics will feed off of it.”
I honestly feel like Rondo was just trying to follow the ref and yell at him so more. He tripped over a teammate and the ref stopped, so Rondo bumped into him. I don’t think it was intentional, but he made contact with a ref, so it’s a suspension regardless.
________________________
This is one of the few times I disagree w/you, GM. I’ve watched that clip 10X, and Rondo (IMO) clearly stuck out his chest to complete the “bump”–albeit a light bump. Also, what he tripped over was the ref’s right foot. No dispute over the suspension–it was warranted–but the more I think about it approaching the game, the more I wish it hadn’t happened for fear the Celts will use it as a catalyst to come out on top. Hawks SHOULD win. Now they just have to knock down the door and go ahead and do it!

Not sure if you were referring to me, Najeh, but I wasnt necessarily saying you were being negative, its just that, like drmary said, I too read from other blogs concerning the Boston/Hawks games and all I ever get is negative write ups on the Hawks while Boston gets all kinds of excuses why Rondo should not have gotten suspended and how it wasnt a foul on Bass when it CLEARLY shown a headlock on him. I just would like to come back onto our home blog with some positivity sometimes. I understand your points on us needing to get better, but heck, who doesnt need to continue to get better and improve? The Spurs, Chicago, OKC, and so forth would tell u a list of things they can improve on, but at the same time give them praise where praise is due. THIS is how we support and stick up for our crew/home team. NOT by writing how Joe shot badly or Teague not attacking enough and how Marvin disappears and how BLAH BLAH…………………Let the team log onto this blog with news like, CONGRADS ON A HUGE WIN U GUYS, HANG IN THERE JOE, YOUR SHOTS WILL FALL NEXT GAME JUST MAKE YOUR MOVES A LITTLE BIT QUICKER. Davis Stern’s view point about the called.
”This was a loose ball foul. Period,” Stern said. ”The foul called was a clear foul. It was a loose ball foul. Rondo missed it, he got very upset and he lost it. He got a ‘T’ for one and then he bumped the official.”

In Stern’s opinion, there was nothing accidental about the bump.
”When you put yourself in position to bump somebody, it’s intentional,” the commissioner said. ”If you’re asking if the ref bumped back into Rondo, no. ”

•Drew on pulling Ivan Johnson out of the game after the two had a spirited exchange following Ivan’s foul in the fourth quarter: “I probably overreacted.
————————————————————————————————————————————–
I don’t know about that other stuff regarding the Jason Collins matchup, but I like that Larry did apologize to Ivan about pulling him out of the game. Ivan’s a beast and plays with an attitude-which the Hawks need. Look at OKC’s Kendrick Perkins and the scuffle with Dirk Nowitzki. This is playoff basketball. As a coach, you have to recognize players who don’t mind mixing it up a little. Dishonorable mention: Metta World War. (peace).

As much as I would like to agree with you, there is little possibility that LD has us ready to win a game in Boston. We had one that got away earlier this year and as good as they look in Orlando, they haven’t shown that same confidence in Boston.
LD’s approach to push the ball is the best way for us to win. Our half court game is still in question because we have Josh hanging around the perimeter. If and when we get Zaza back, he makes our 1/2 court game run much better. Garnett on Josh now is a key matchup.
I see Pierce on the perimeter more this game than normal. Lots of pressure for he and KG to start strong.
Like DMB said, HC is huge and that’s why probably takes 7, but it takes a win in Boston to get that. This series will be the toughest 1st round series for any team this year. Boston is a tough out and will be going forward.

And speaking of that last game played in Boston, is it me or are the ref’s letting us play Boston as if WE were the team with 3 Hall of Famers on it? In that game in Boston where we lost by 2, the ref were BASICALLY giving us that game. I mean, when was the last time KG fouled out against us? When was the last time the ref called a cheap one on Paul Pierce with the face slap against Josh Smith no doubt? And this last game, ejecting Rondo in a playoff match up? Im starting to think the ref not worried about the Boston/Hawks, or Orlando/Pacers, or even the Bulls/76ers games..THEIR ONLY CONCERN IS MIAMI ADVANCING ONCE AGAIN TO THE FINALS AND THE REF WILL ALLOW NO ONE TO GET IN THEIR WAY! What’s yall take on that?
KevinM

MsDee, that game in Boston was handed to us on a silver platter…it was 8 vs. the Boston 5.5 (Doc gets a .5)
If we couldn’t close that one out, you won’t see us getting that benefit again, especially in the playoffs.
And how important is it for TNT to have some suspense on the East side of things if we somehow can beat Boston 4/5? It won’t happen for many reasons, and LD and his strategies will be part of the reason why this series goes so long.
Dominant over Orlando, not so much over any other .500 team. That’s how I see this team. Dan Patrick said earlier today, “Celtics/Hawks: who are the Hawks? What is their identity?”
A lot of us are asking that question. Me? I expect nothing to change from Game 1 on our side. LD thinks he has a formula that can beat the C’s and he will stick with the same starting 5 and the same rotation.
T-Mac does more for us than he is getting credit for and Ivan fills the Zaza role this series because he isn’t coming back against Boston. I don’t see getting much from Zaza down the stretch.

Dawg, the answer to your ESPN question is simple. They’re lazy and appeal to the lowest common denominator of sports fans. Very easy to do stories on LeBron. Harder to do stories on players not as well known. Plus, ESPN still trying to save face for promoting “The Descison”, when that d-bag declared his talents to South Beach. So, the pump LeBron as a great player and great guy.

To be fair to ESPN, they show what the higher % of people want to watch.
If ESPN was doing a special on the Atlanta Hawks, how many people would watch? Compare that number to how many people would watch if it was a special on the Miami heat. It’s all about ratings.

According to the Synergy Report of Collins guarding KG it doesn’t look like he did a very good job.
Garnett scored 12 points and had 3 assists in the 11 possessions that Collins guarded him. That’s a 1.10 points per possession. Factor in the assists that’s 18 points and that’s a 1.64 points per possession for a team. Collins did have his moments but overall his performance was not as good as we thought and I definitely believe that there is no way he should get more minutes than Ivan.

If given a choice, I’d prefer Rondo serve his suspension in game 3 in Boston rather than game 2 in Atlanta. Gotta like Hawks’ chances at Philips in game 2 even with Rondo in uniform (especially if Allen is out). The absence of Rondo in game 3 in Beantown would be of more series value to the Hawks. Wouldn’t it be interesting if, during the playoffs, the league offered the opposing team the option of deciding which future game(s) a suspended player is to sit out? Aren’t such decisions of enough strategic importance to warrant input from the opposing team?

kingd, all I have on my side is his history. Be objective and look at it, no where he has been cares for the guy and he killed coaches and teams. Drew sees it, and tmac is a straight iso player, against old-a– vince carter, his cousin, he couldnt even get off a shot. The guy has faltered everywhere he has been in the playoffs, he’s no savior, i bet you 10 dollars to your one, drew or sund does not have him back next year.

“tmac is a straight iso player”
That’s a bizarre statement. I have not followed T-Mac’s career until he joined the Hawks, but all I’ve witnessed this year is a court leader who moves the ball around the court and always finds the open player when he draws a double-team.
My definition of an “iso player” means that the ball movement stops with him.

as someone whos was against signing tmac, i can say that i’ve been more then happy what i’ve seen. His last two weeks alone makes up for the whole season of marvins output all year. tmac is our best passer/playmaker.

Also who said he was supposed to be a saviour?. He was signed as a cog in the machine type player and not to be the whole engine and he has done that when given the opportunity with great successes

I am appreciative of anything that T-Mac brings to our team. He brings trust from the other guys and he knows where to put the ball as well.
No, he doesn’t give us 10/5, but he doesn’t get enough minutes to get those numbers.
That bench of ours has been productive throughout the year and I don’t see it disappearing just because its the playoffs. They should have plenty of energy to help us.
Hold the HC and I am esctatic; It’ll also make Doc look like a fool too since he thinks his team will win no matter the situation.

We need ZaZa back. And we need Marvin to somehow play with some aggression tonite. We are in for a tough game.
Teague in College could get up for some big games. His last season at Wake – 34 pts against #3 UNC in a win, and 28 pts in a loss to Duke at Cameron. I think last years playoffs showed he relishes the big stage really. He’s just not uber talented, but he’s solid and fast.
Teague as a starter in the playoffs – 6 games vs the Bulls and 1 vs the Celtics
About 15 pts, 3 rbs, 4 assts, over 50% shooting per game. Scored over 20pts 3 times in 7 games.
Averages 1 steal per game, and has had 8 turnovers in 7 games total. Has played 40+ minutes in 5 of 7 playoff games. He’s doing pretty good for a #19 pick. I look for a solid series from him.

Steve Hummer on Teague – “The Hawks’ point guard went for a little more than 12 points and four assists per game this year”
Umm, 12.6 and 4.9 to be exact. That’s a little understating don’t you think Mr. Hummer? How about around 12 and a half ppg, and just under 5 assists per game – just for accuracy’s sake.
You maybe could’ve mentioned he finished Top 10 in Steals in the NBA also.
Again, I predicted 11 and 5 for Teague this season, just based on what I had seen of him. Solid. With Al down, he scored a little more than I thought he would, and Al probably cost him not averaging over 5 assists per game. And the dude works hard in the off season.
Predicting a good series for him, and 13 and 6 next season at age 24.

“And we need Marvin to somehow play with some aggression tonite.”
With the Hawks in attack mode the other night against the Celtics he kind of got “lost” in the offense. He has played best in the halfcourt with lots of ball movement. (Rod from CP – I didn’t say Marvin played well, just “best” for him, which ain’t saying much).
Without Rondo the Hawks should absolutely ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK. Which leaves little room for Marvin’s halfcourt game tonight.

Of course, now that I have said that about Marvin, he will score 24 points in 20 minutes of playing time.

And what can you say about Josh? He’s finally reaching his potential. If he plays in the post, we can win the Title.
But only if JJ plays smart.
I expect war tonite – nothing easy. These are the Celtics.
And did I hear correctly on the radio today that the Knicks had not won a playoff game in 11 years? And a Championship since ‘73?
Ok, they’ve won a Championship and the Hawks haven’t, but it’s not like they’ve been setting the world on fire in dominance.
It would be accurate to say that in the last 12 years, we have been much more successful than the Knicks. We’ve won 18 playoff games in that span, to 0 for the Knicks.
And trust me – I’m rooting for the Knicks against the Heat

I believe this, too. I’ve always said that ATL fans will support a WINNER that shows PROGRESS. This year’s playoffs–although only 1 game old–offer the promise that so many Hawks teams of the past have offered. All we can do is hope that this latest group will make ATL history by surviving not only Round 1, but Round 2 and (dare we dream?) BEYOND.

SteveW,
I, too, think Teague can have a big game tongiht. The only thing that will slow him down is himself. Every dozen or so games he goes into his shell. He does not stay in front of his man on defense or penetrate on offense.
I don’t expect this of Teague, I just have this nagging feeling about tongiht’s game. I hope I’m wrong.

I think if this team wins the Celtic series, this town will go nuts. I expect a good crowd at Phillips tonite.
Maybe the Hawks in 5? Need ZaZa back however. And if we could get Al back for 15 mpg in the 2nd round??
I still think Chicago takes their series in 6.
The Mavs have sure played OKC tough in OKC. Lost two games by 4 pts? I expected war in the Western Conference in all the series and I think that’s what we’ve got.
I still say Indy in 6, but I figured Orlando would play them tough.
Go Hawks!

Rev – Right now, I think Teague is healthy and rested, so unless 1 of our 3 (JJ, Josh, LD) get’s in his head, he’ll play well.
My biggest concern is Bradley is really rested and healthy. And he has the physical tools to slow Teague way down. I think Teague vs. a Rondo with a hurt back is better than a Teague vs Bradley with Bradley playing with a ton of aggression.
And then Friday – Rondo will be ultra rested. It’s going to be a tough series for Jeff, but I think he’ll be solid, but not spectacular throughout.

I`m with Rev on this one … actually most of the time:
T-Mac
* knows how to get open w/o the ball
* high B-ball IQ
* terrific passer with vision and know-when

Help me out.
How do the brackets work out? Who will Hawks play if they advance? Is it a strict bracket or does it change based on w/l record?
For example, does the team with the best w/l record always play the team with the worst w/l in the semi-finals? Or is there an unchangeable bracket based on the regular season w/l?
I’m not sure if I’m making my question clear.

This is an important game, one that could catapult the HAWKS into where they have not gone before. Joe says that he will play faster, that is beneficial to everyone on the floor, if Josh gives the ball to Jeff and let him run the offense that could be a moral victory in our running game. I hope they come out with energy and common sense and just do what they are capable of and a victory could be forth coming. Now is not the time for the premadonna routine, but time for smart basketball. Winning tonight could really put the HAWKS in a damn good position. A position that may not present itself again

It doesn’t change based on won-loss record. The Hawks will play the winner of the Bulls-Sixers series. The Pacers-Magic winner will play the Heat.

Thanks dude. Totally agree that ATL will go crazy if this team makes it to the finals. Even making it to the ECF and not embarrassing themselves once they get there will make this city proud.
I wish they weren’t going up against the Braves head to head tonight, though.

I don’t know exactly what a “straight iso player” is, but LeBron isolates a lot, and that doesn’t stop him from getting good shots for his teammates. Just because a player likes iso doesn’t mean he has to stop all ball movement like Joe does.
It may be a fair statement to say T-Mac is comfortable in iso situations, since that is how he has played most of his career, but that doesn’t mean he is a ball hog or a ball stopper. He’s the best passer on this team.
The thing is, at this point in his career, since he has lost so much of his explosiveness, he can’t create for teammates nearly as effectively when he gets the ball on the perimeter as when he gets it 15 feet and in. Without the threat of being able to get to the hoop, his passing effectiveness diminishes, and he can get to the hoop much easier when he receives the ball closer to the basket.

Three 3rd place votes for LD for COY. He was on more ballots than Stan Van Gundy and Mike Brown.
I would have given it to Thibodeau, but can’t argue with Popovich. Tyrone Corbin deserved more love than he got, though.

Doc got a 1st place vote for COY….wow, the 4th/5th seed doesn’t deserve to be COY. He has had a healthy roster for the most part for the bulk of the year minus O’Neal.
LD did a better job than Rivers did and I’m not LD’s biggest fan. But he got the Hawks to listen and they didn’t let Al impact their results.
Thibs did the job better than anyone and held off the annointed Miami 3 all year….not much love for Spoelstra either huh?
