Atlanta Hawks: Hawks-Celtics notes and quotes
9:23 pm April 30, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
- Zaza Pachulia (foot) is expected to miss Game 2. He’s now able to do some light walking on a treadmill but still is wearing a boot to keep pressure off the injury.
- Doc Rivers said he doesn’t expect Ray Allen to play in Game 2: “If he is not ready, he’s not ready. One thing I will never do, and maybe I’m wrong in it, I don’t ever put a guy out who is not ready. I just won’t put him on the floor. If Ray told me in thought he could play tomorrow and [team trainer] Eddie [Lacerte] told me he could not, Ray would not play. That’s just the way it is.”
- Larry Drew before the Rajon Rondo suspension came down from the league: “Certainly it changes things a little bit but, with or without him, they’ve shown they can win. They are a veteran ballclub. They’ve been in those situations where they’ve had players out. Certainly whether he is there or not we can’t let our guards down. Until we get the official word of whether he’s available or not, we are going to factor him in. Like I told our guys, this is the playoffs, and there are things that happen throughout the course of the playoffs that can change things. But you can’t at any time relax or let your guard down. You have to be a team on a mission.”
- Jeff Teague: “They are still a good team. They’ve won games without Rondo this year. [Avery] Bradley is a good player. Last game we played him here he had 28 points so we don’t take anyone lightly or take a step down.
- Bradley: “I just have to bring the ball up the floor a little bit more. But it’s gonna feel like a regular game to me. I’ve just got to continue to play at the intensity I play at, get our team into our offense, and play the way I’ve been playing.”
- Keyon Dooling on what Celtics lose without Rondo: “I think it’s obvious. He’s a double-double. He led the league in assists. Obviously for our shooting bigs, he gets them open looks. For our shooters from the wing spots, he gets them open looks. Not having him in there, we have to rely more on [Paul Pierce's] scoring and [Kevin Garnett's] post-ups. We’re just going to have to do some of the little things to make up for not having Rondo.”
- Dooling on if he could start: “I don’t know if that will be the case. Usually when [Rondo] doesn’t play, we slide Avery over to the point guard and bring in another guy into the two-guard position. This will be another opportunity to get a chance to play. I’ve played in the playoffs several times. I know how to play in the playoffs.”
- Doc Rivers on the play preceding Rondo’s ejection: “It’s funny, I actually told Brandon [Bass] when I watched it live–it’s amazing how your eyes get it wrong–I told Brandon i thought it was a foul, that [official] Marc [Davis] made the right call. When I watched it again, I apologized to [Bass]. It should have been a jump ball. Having said all that, we’ve gotta control our emotions, no doubt about that. We talked about that two days ago as a team. I rarely have those type of meetings, and i did. Now I’m wishing i hadn’t. Maybe if I had not talked about it, nothing would’ve happened. But, it is what it is. We’ll be ready for whichever way they go.”
- Drew said he will use the same starting lineup in Game 2. Does he expect Garnett to take Jason Collins off the dribble more often? “Possibly. We will have to cross that bridge when it comes. For the most part with ‘KG’ out on the perimeter, we will take our chances and try to force him into tough shots.”
- Fired up the Synergy Sports machine and did a rundown of the 11 possessions Garnett used against Collins:
Assist to Bradley on a cut after Bradley rubbed Kirk Hinrich off Garnett’s screen.
Missed a J on solid closeout by Collins.
Missed a fadeaway J on left baseline on strong challenge by Collins.
Missed a fadeaway J after Collins cut off drive to right.
Caught an alley-oop dunk when Collins was back-picked
Assist (while under pressure by Collins) to Dooling, who received cross-court pass and went by Willie Green.
Assist to Brandon Bass, who made fadeaway post J under pressure by Josh Smith.
Missed a turnaround J on left block on strong challenge by Collins.
Made a pick-and-pop J that Collins basically conceded to help on ball-handler.
Missed a pick-and-pop J on slow closeout by Collins.
Made a spot-up J after Collins got caught in a switch.
Made a turnaround J on strong challenge from Collins.
Made a spot-up J on weak closeout by Collins.
Made a layup as roll man over good challenge by Collins.
- Synergy confirmed what my naked (on deadline) eye perceived in Game 1: Joe Johnson missed a lot of open Js. Six of his 12 misses were (subjectively) open jump shots. Another three were challenged but the kind of shots we’ve seen Joe make regularly. Joe missed four wide open spot-up 3-point attempts that were created by Josh, with two of those on the break, one off a Josh post-up and another on a Josh drive.
- Joe’s 0.5 points per possession were second-worse for the Hawks behind Marvin Williams‘ 0.4. Hinrich led the team with 1.33 points per possession, Jannero Pargo was next at 1.25 ppp and Jeff Teague was third at 1.15. Collins was fourth at one point per possession.
- Teague on getting Joe going: “He got the shots he wanted, they just didn’t go down. On his isolations they were crowding up on him and bumping him a lot. Sometimes we have just got to cut more and get more player movement. If we do that, he will get more openings to make his moves. For me, in the corners, they were helping out of the corners so I am going to cut [from] off the corners more and give him more room to operate.”
- Joe: “When I went back and looked at [video], even the times I had Paul ‘iso’d’ we were just kind of standing around and waiting. And then ‘KG’ came in one time and that’s when all the chaos happened. It’s part of the game. We will make adjustments, I will make adjustments and see what I can do to be more effective.”
- Drew on the stagnation when Joe has the ball: “We have a tendency to sort of start standing. At times we lack the movement we should have when he has the basketball. The other thing is we became too one-sided instead of running our stuff, trying to get the basketball to the other side and force the defense to shift and then try to attack. We look at offense and clearly see where we get in trouble when we spend too much time on one side. When we do that we become a standstill team with too much isolation, and we become a lot easier to defend.”
- Drew on if it’s on Joe to be quicker moving the ball: “It’s on everybody. It’s whatever we run, we have to make sure we get ball reversal and when we have to attack off the reversal.”
- Joe on the team’s defense: “That’s something you can bring every night. The way we were defensively, contesting shots, playing passing lanes, being relentless out there that’s the way we’ve got to play every game this series.”
- Drew on pulling Ivan Johnson out of the game after the two had a spirited exchange following Ivan’s foul in the fourth quarter: “I probably overreacted. I grabbed Ivan after the game walking through the tunnel and told him to give me a hug. I’m not afraid to admit when I’m wrong about something. I probably overreacted. I need that type energy and that type aggrression, I thought he made a really good foul. I was looking at the matchup, too. I really wanted to keep Jason matched up with ‘KG’ as much as I could.”
- Ivan on his interaction with the official: “The ref made a bad call, he admitted it, and I let it go.”
- Ivan on KG: “Garnett, he’s a dirty player. He gives me a lot of elbows. But I can handle that.”
- Ivan said he doesn’t retaliate because “[refs] are looking at me the whole game. I try not to because I’m usually the one that gets caught.”
- Joe on Ivan being a different kind of dude: “It’s a good difference. He brings a different dimension to the team that we haven’t had in a long time. He’s not scared of anything. He just goes out and plays the same way every night.”
- Jon on if he calls Ivan “Rook,”which is standard among NBA teams: “I call him Ivan.”
- Doc Rivers on Game 1: “I think [the Hawks] came out with the right attack mode and I think we came out thinking that our jerseys were going to win the game: ‘We are the Celtics.’ You have to play basketball. When you’ve had success it’s easy to lean back on your past success and forget than no one really cares,” he said. “It’s what you do tomorrow. It’s not what you did yesterday.”

Talking to the Po-Po of the NFL, who works with Merton Hanks (Ex 49er) and, determines the penalty fines for players hits on other players that are in question. One thing stood out, he said they look comprehensively at past history to determine a players intent, because they can not read minds to determine intent.
Rondo, now has a wrap sheet for this behavior. It is his MO (method of operandis)now. History repeats. Didn’t he throw the ball at a referee earleir this season, striking him in the chest, and was suspended two games? Rondo is lucky it wasn’t three games this time, on a progressive scale of punishment. There is that “C” word agaon, “chest”.
I’m just sayin’.

Anatomy of a Hand!
doc, nice breakdown of the hand structures. Can you imagine that, being a trauma/vascular surgeon in ER. having to work on “idiots” all day long? Myself, being a chiropractor, my hands are my life, my money maker, much like a boxer. No hands … no eats!
Doesn’t Amare’ need his left hand too? How will he rebound the ball and block shots now? (smh) Boy, these playoffs have the players going stark mad. LOL

HCA Matters! (just ask Doc)
All the home teams won last night. Only Indiana has lost HCA. I like this trend and am sure Atlanta will not lose HCA tonight.
Going on the road up 2-0 will be huge and almost insurmountable for the Celtics. The Hawks are the better team right now and, right now is all that matters. Playing aboove ground and not from a deep hole, is the way to go.

I’m surprised that I’m thinking this, but I believe in the Hawks.
They will not overlook this game tonight. They will be mentally prepared. They will not lay an egg, but bring their “A” game.
My only concern is Jeff Teague. Every so often he has lead feet defensively and offensively. If he can exploit the Rondo suspension the game will be an easy win for the Hawks.
Once the Hawks take the 2-0 lead in the series they are in a position to take the series in 5 games.
My surprise is fueled by the fact that the Hawks are doing this without Zaza and Horford.

Knicks Stoudemire injures hand after loss… punching fire extinguisher?
Kurt Helin May 1, 2012, 12:37 AM EDT

Reuters
May 1, 12:37 am: Amare Stoudemire tweeted this:
I am so mad at myself right now, I want to apologize to the fans and my team, not proud of my actions, headed home for a new start
April 30, 11:01 pm: This is the most intensity Amare Stoudemire has shown all playoffs.
Frustrated after he seemed to stand around all game watching the offense run through Carmelo Anthony on the way to another Knicks playoff loss, Amare Stoudemire punched a glass-encased fire extinguisher on his way back to the locker room, sources told Ken Berger of CBSSports.com, as well as other reports on twitter. That led to lacerations on his hand that needed to be stitched up, according to multiple reports.
There was a busted up fire extinguisher case near the Knicks locker room. The Knicks confirmed Stoudemire hurt himself after the game but no details. We don’t know if this was a “classic” punch or just him slamming the side of his hand into the extinguisher case in frustration as he walked past.
What we do know is that there was a lot of blood, paramedics put some stitches into Stoudemire’s left hand (we don’t know how many) and he left the arena with his hand in a bandage and his arm in a sling. He is not getting X-rays (yet) and he is leaving New York with the team.
His status for Game 3 Thursday is currently unknown.
Coach Mike Woodson as well as Carmelo Anthony both said they did not know what happened or have any updates on Stoudemire.
The Knicks should be frustrated. But while Stoudemire has not played great this series he is a threat and if he is out it allows the Heat to turn their focus more toward Anthony and other Knicks threats. Basically, this isn’t good.
__________
Amare’ should be moved next season. He is already “uninsurable” and, this latest act does not help any. Question is: Who will take his 100M contract on, The Brookly Nets with DWill? Money certainly would not be an issue over there. Melo, (a super star ball hog who never passes)and Amare’ can not co-exist on the same roster.
Poor Woodson.

Get the ball out of JJ’s hands. He plays better without the ball. He is not quick enough and he can not dribble good enough to handle the ball against good teams.
I am tired of hearing Doc Rivers view of the Bass foul. Rivers is biased. Who cares what he thinks? Bass fouled Josh big time and it is time for someone to actually say, “Bass fouled Smith”.

Mike Woodson has lost his last 6 playoff games as a HC by 43, 14, 30, 14, 33, and 10. A good man, but not a good coach (and it is magnified in the playoffs). Give me LD over Woody (and I’m not a big fan of LD).
16 shots TOTAL for Amare in 2 games, while Carmelo got 41 shots. And where is the ball movement? The Knicks had just 15 assists on 38 made field goals last night.
I am rooting for Woody, but I have not seen anything out of him this series to suggest that he deserves the coaching job full time.

As for JJ, we have been talking about it all season. If he is going Iso, He needs to go quicker. Why is it so hard for him to understand?
However, LD should not let it come to that. Run the offense through Josh and Jeff.

obrien,
big problem with knicks no penetrating point guard with lin hurt, no shumpert, davis shot, fields not a 2 guard. also woodson not creative on offense and amare shell of his former self.
knicks would be better off if they can trading amare for a stretch big man like. luis scola or andrea bargani which would fit more in the team flow offense. the problem is amare contract is uninsurable. knicks have had about 5 different teams since beginning of season. biggest problem is carmelo and amare are one way players. amare is more of a small forward and melo plays better at the 4

“As for Rondo, he just straight-up lied about it. Morals don’t matter though. Hawks have to guard against complacency Tuesday night with Rondo out. Celtics will feed off of it.”
I honestly feel like Rondo was just trying to follow the ref and yell at him so more. He tripped over a teammate and the ref stopped, so Rondo bumped into him. I don’t think it was intentional, but he made contact with a ref, so it’s a suspension regardless.
________________________
This is one of the few times I disagree w/you, GM. I’ve watched that clip 10X, and Rondo (IMO) clearly stuck out his chest to complete the “bump”–albeit a light bump. Also, what he tripped over was the ref’s right foot. No dispute over the suspension–it was warranted–but the more I think about it approaching the game, the more I wish it hadn’t happened for fear the Celts will use it as a catalyst to come out on top. Hawks SHOULD win. Now they just have to knock down the door and go ahead and do it!

Not sure if you were referring to me, Najeh, but I wasnt necessarily saying you were being negative, its just that, like drmary said, I too read from other blogs concerning the Boston/Hawks games and all I ever get is negative write ups on the Hawks while Boston gets all kinds of excuses why Rondo should not have gotten suspended and how it wasnt a foul on Bass when it CLEARLY shown a headlock on him. I just would like to come back onto our home blog with some positivity sometimes. I understand your points on us needing to get better, but heck, who doesnt need to continue to get better and improve? The Spurs, Chicago, OKC, and so forth would tell u a list of things they can improve on, but at the same time give them praise where praise is due. THIS is how we support and stick up for our crew/home team. NOT by writing how Joe shot badly or Teague not attacking enough and how Marvin disappears and how BLAH BLAH…………………Let the team log onto this blog with news like, CONGRADS ON A HUGE WIN U GUYS, HANG IN THERE JOE, YOUR SHOTS WILL FALL NEXT GAME JUST MAKE YOUR MOVES A LITTLE BIT QUICKER. Davis Stern’s view point about the called.
”This was a loose ball foul. Period,” Stern said. ”The foul called was a clear foul. It was a loose ball foul. Rondo missed it, he got very upset and he lost it. He got a ‘T’ for one and then he bumped the official.”
Way to call it Stern!!

In Stern’s opinion, there was nothing accidental about the bump.
”When you put yourself in position to bump somebody, it’s intentional,” the commissioner said. ”If you’re asking if the ref bumped back into Rondo, no. ”

I don’t know about that other stuff regarding the Jason Collins matchup, but I like that Larry did apologize to Ivan about pulling him out of the game. Ivan’s a beast and plays with an attitude-which the Hawks need. Look at OKC’s Kendrick Perkins and the scuffle with Dirk Nowitzki. This is playoff basketball. As a coach, you have to recognize players who don’t mind mixing it up a little. Dishonorable mention: Metta World War. (peace).

As much as I would like to agree with you, there is little possibility that LD has us ready to win a game in Boston. We had one that got away earlier this year and as good as they look in Orlando, they haven’t shown that same confidence in Boston.
LD’s approach to push the ball is the best way for us to win. Our half court game is still in question because we have Josh hanging around the perimeter. If and when we get Zaza back, he makes our 1/2 court game run much better. Garnett on Josh now is a key matchup.
I see Pierce on the perimeter more this game than normal. Lots of pressure for he and KG to start strong.
Like DMB said, HC is huge and that’s why probably takes 7, but it takes a win in Boston to get that. This series will be the toughest 1st round series for any team this year. Boston is a tough out and will be going forward.

And speaking of that last game played in Boston, is it me or are the ref’s letting us play Boston as if WE were the team with 3 Hall of Famers on it? In that game in Boston where we lost by 2, the ref were BASICALLY giving us that game. I mean, when was the last time KG fouled out against us? When was the last time the ref called a cheap one on Paul Pierce with the face slap against Josh Smith no doubt? And this last game, ejecting Rondo in a playoff match up? Im starting to think the ref not worried about the Boston/Hawks, or Orlando/Pacers, or even the Bulls/76ers games..THEIR ONLY CONCERN IS MIAMI ADVANCING ONCE AGAIN TO THE FINALS AND THE REF WILL ALLOW NO ONE TO GET IN THEIR WAY! What’s yall take on that?

MsDee, that game in Boston was handed to us on a silver platter…it was 8 vs. the Boston 5.5 (Doc gets a .5)
If we couldn’t close that one out, you won’t see us getting that benefit again, especially in the playoffs.
And how important is it for TNT to have some suspense on the East side of things if we somehow can beat Boston 4/5? It won’t happen for many reasons, and LD and his strategies will be part of the reason why this series goes so long.
Dominant over Orlando, not so much over any other .500 team. That’s how I see this team. Dan Patrick said earlier today, “Celtics/Hawks: who are the Hawks? What is their identity?”
A lot of us are asking that question. Me? I expect nothing to change from Game 1 on our side. LD thinks he has a formula that can beat the C’s and he will stick with the same starting 5 and the same rotation.
T-Mac does more for us than he is getting credit for and Ivan fills the Zaza role this series because he isn’t coming back against Boston. I don’t see getting much from Zaza down the stretch.

Dawg, the answer to your ESPN question is simple. They’re lazy and appeal to the lowest common denominator of sports fans. Very easy to do stories on LeBron. Harder to do stories on players not as well known. Plus, ESPN still trying to save face for promoting “The Descison”, when that d-bag declared his talents to South Beach. So, the pump LeBron as a great player and great guy.

“I hope the Hawks sweep, because there is no way I can make it to a possible Game 5, and that would end my streak of going to every home playoff game in Philips Arena history.”
That would be nice, but highly doubtful. I don’t see the Celts dropping two games in Boston–maybe one.

As for Teague’s preformance tonight…
I predict he has another solid to great game, because of how bad Bradley made him look in their last matchup of the season. He’s going to want revenge for that.

Not 100% true. Steven A. Smith says the Knicks are done, and Skip Bayless says they still have ‘a chance’.

Even when T-Mac is not producing, I think he has a positive impact on the other players on the court with him (even if it is mental), just because he is T-Mac.
Think about it. If you are Josh Smith, who would you feel more confident about having on the court with you? Marvin Williams, or T-Mac?

To be fair to ESPN, they show what the higher % of people want to watch.
If ESPN was doing a special on the Atlanta Hawks, how many people would watch? Compare that number to how many people would watch if it was a special on the Miami heat. It’s all about ratings.
If they are talking about the Braves vs Phillies, how many people would watch, compared to the Yanks vs the Sox. I dont like it either, but the E in espn stands for entertainment.
