Knicks at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread

  • Larry Drew initially said he would start Jason Collins at center but left open the possibility of changing the lineup if Tyson Chandler doesn’t play. It turns out Chandler will sit, Landry Fields starts and Amar’e Stoudemire is at center. Drew will counter with Josh Smith at center and Marvin Williams at power forward.
  • Zaza Pachulia remains out and Drew said he’s still not sure if he will be available for the start of the playoffs: “I’m hoping so. He’s certainly doing better than, from my understanding, what they had anticipated. There is some progress with the injury and where he is with it.”
  • Al Horford put his chances of being ready for the first round at 70 percent. Drew: “We are keeping our fingers crossed but we are not totally counting on him. We don’t want to have wishful thinking. When they told us about the surgery that the probability would be very slim so at that point made our mind up we would not get him back.”
  • Drew said he anticipates Horford would play “not very many” minutes if he returns: “We would have to work him in gradually. I wouldn’t want to throw him right into the fire. I know his conditioning is not very good because he’s been off for so long. It would be a gradual process to get him back adjusted. It will really be how he feels. When you lay off for that long it’s tough to get your legs under you.”

Yes. They lost. I get it.

Yet the playoffs is what truly matters. So, when the lose then… I will give a sh!t.

I don’t need the history lesson either. I am not a homer fan. I just know when effort is given.

A comfortable 1 point loss at home. Wow….

I guess people here still enjoy moral victories. Let a hobbled Amare score 20+ smh. Just keep Melo on perimeter

Marvin also had 11 rebounds? You mean Marvin actually had a strong double-double with 29 points and 11 rebounds?

“Never be okay with a loss. Never.”

I’m okay with it if it’s not the team’s fault. You know that was the worst officiated game of the year.

Doesn’t matter. The Braves will win today.

Nobody should be pointing the finger at Marvin for this game. If he played like this every game he’d be an All Star. This came down to bad team defense and not taking care of the ball.

Breaking News!!
My cousin cherelle is from cali and she and my aunt who works at TBS got tickets today..Cherelle is a lip reader/Arabic translater when she was in the army. They were sitting across court on the 4th row watching the game..My aunt called me to tell me some interesting news when they were at the marta train station headed back to westlake a minute ago..
My cousin asked my aunt who was Jeff? My Aunt said,he’s a player with the hawks why?
Then Cherelle said,I think the bald headed guy was referring to him when he told lala’s husband and 2 other guys to “go after jeff, and do whatever you got to do to get in his head because he is soft and is easily out of focus when you piss him off”..

No lie..Cause i got a kick out of the knicks just talking trash to him and i never gave it a 2nd thought after trash talking in the 3rd (i think thats when melo was talking ish to him)..I was like, dang what did Jeff do because he is not a talker..

So,it was good old woody who riled up the boys to talk ish to Teague and now that i think about it,no one had his back when they were except for Prago..

Two very competitive and interesting nationally televised Hawks games. The national media have come accustomed to the Hawks laying the big egg on the national spot light, thus the snub at the half and Doris Burke for color commentary. Overall it’s pleasant to watch the Hawks now. The iso Joe ball and the Jamal” score at any cost” ball Crawford is a thing of the past. My great concern with LD and the Hawks is the Highlight Factory has become the Turnover Factory. They are way too careless with the ball even coming out of a time out. LD and the players have to fix the turnover problem too be playoff giant killer.

Good coaches don’t run final plays through Marvin Williams. Pretty sure 90% of his points were completely uncontested. Willie or Pargo should have had that play run for threm

I do get it.

I just don’t give a sh!t. This win would not make a difference in the grand scheme of things.

Playoffs is where it matters. If they can get past the second round, then it’s a step in the right direction.

Evenly matched game on the stat sheet. Both teams shot 54% in FG, close to the same on 3pt 63.2% to our 65.2%. However, FT was different with them shooting 75% to our 65%. It was just a hard fought game.

The last play was not executed well. Even if Marvin had made it, he still had the ball in his hand when the game ended and the dunk would not have counted. He needed to have that count in his head so he knew he would have to pull up and shoot. Maybe Amare would have fouled him. Anyway, it is done.

By the way, it would not surprised me if Woody did make a comment to get into Teague’s head to his team. JT was one of the top 3 scorers for the game but Joe, Marving and Jeff were all around 9-14 in FG’s for the night, but LD chose to sit him for the last play and Jeff did not look happy. He was replaced by Willie Green. Green is not shy about taking shots and it was obvious that Jeff was reluctant to take shots on the perimeter. He is going to have to get over that if he wants to move up to the next level.

Teague deserves to be sat down at the end of the game when we are trying to win on a 1/2 court play. Teague is not as good a FT shooter nor as good a jump shooter as Willie.
I take my chances with Willed over Teague in that situation.

3 biggest reasons for this loss (imo).

1) Defense. Giving up 113 points, and letting the opposing team shoot 54% is terrible.

2) Missed FT. We have lost multiple games this season due to missed FT.

3) Turnovers. 19 today. In the last 2 games, Josh has 12 turnovers alone (I think he tries to do too much at times). JJ had 3 today, and Teague had 4.

In the playoffs, missed FTs and turnovers will be huge (imo).

I often get on Marvin’s case, but today-I won’t. Why? Because Marvin grew into a man today; he grew from raisins to nuts. Now-he needs to take that same energy into the playoffs to help get his team past the first round. Cause you know, this may be his last hurrah, and I think he realizes and read the Gwinnett Post article about NFL busts. That article can apply to any major league sport.

OB, did dc call Teague a scrub incapable of every playing well? Just wondering?

With about 2:20 left in the game, Joe drew a double team and passed to a wide open Teague behind the 3 point line. Teague gave the ball up immediately like it was a hot potato.

He is coming along but his next step is showing more late game confidence, especially when he is wide open. If he refuses to attack the defense in the 4th quarter, the opposing PG will double Joe and Josh everytime down the floor.

It was a thrilling game. Hawks can’t lose focus at the free throw line like they have done several times this season. A few less of those careless TOs would have been nice.

BTW, can’t get too excited about a game that featured such anomolies as over a dozen made 3-pointers and Marvin going the F off.

Fun game.
