Vivlamore reporting from Philips Arena.
FOR A GAME THREAD TONIGHT, JEFF SCHULTZ WILL BE BLOGGING LIVE.
The Hawks will definitely be without center Zaza Pachulia for tonight’s key Eastern Conference matchup against the Celtics. Pachulia, who will miss his fourth straight game with a sprained left foot, did not take part in the morning shoot-around and coach Larry Drew ruled him out.
Drew said he had no further update on just how long Pachulia will be out. He did not practice Thursday but worked with trainers on the side.
Drew said he did not know whether Erick Dampier, who was unavailable Wednesday against the Pistons with a calf injury, would play. He called the back-up center a game-time decision. Dampier did take part in today’s shoot-around.
The Celtics, who held their shoot-around at Georgia Tech, did not travel with Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen and Mickael Pietrus. Coach Doc Rivers confirmed that he will rest Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, meaning the Celtics will be without three starters and two key reserves.
While he said both teams want to win tonight’s matchup, Drew said neither wants to show too much as they will very likely meet in the first round of the playoffs.
“With us and not knowing who they are going to have here tonight as far as guys who are going to play or not going to play, we have to keep that in mind,” Drew said. “We certainly have to keep that in mind because the last thing we want to do is to tip our hand totally. We want to go out and play well. We want to keep doing what we do. But at the same time if this is a team we are going to see in the first round we have to be mindful of that and not tip our hand too much.”

Grandad,
I was not commenting on Fab Melo’s worth. Never seen him play, not even on youtube clips.
My comment was about how high 7′ with perceived talent/skill are picked and that he would not fall so far in the draft order.
Thabeet is an example that actually goes in favor of my argument: the list of crappy 7′ picked high in the first round is big enough to make a human belt around the globe.
Unless Fab Melo completely sucks in his try outs, there will be certainly a GM on #5 to #10 which will take a flier on him.

” A bench player who by and large didn’t do sh-t for the last two seasons shouldn’t come in and be an upgrade over an All NBA player in any respect.”
Totally Agree.
“Night in and night out, no other Hawks player has to contend with anywhere close to the number of disadvantages that Horford does. He usually goes up against centers that are taller, bigger, stronger, or all of the above, on a routine basis. Even with all of these consistent disadvanges, he has still managed to not only hold his own, but perform at an ALLSTAR and ALLPRO level. I don’t know of any soft asses, especially at OC, that can function at that level.”
No one on this team deals with more defensive responsibility, or mismatches than Josh Smith. Josh has guarded everything from top notch 2 guards to centers. Al is scared of Dwight Howard, and wants nothing to do with him, Josh is not. Al is a good man to man defender, but his help defense is not good at all. Even though a lot of centers are bigger than Al, he has the quickness and agility qualities that balance the size difference out. Simply put, he has just become soft.

G-Dad, reading your last blog on big men…..it sounds like you are convinced Sund will once again force a 7 footer on us on draft day…guys that appear to have plenty of limitations.
Melo, all we heard was how important he was to the Cuse zone defense. Doesn’t this mean he will have to come in a learn how to move his feet at the next level? He sounds so limited playing that scheme in Syracuse that he will be playing an entirely different game this next time around…and with no making the grades, will that be an impact to his game at the next level from a common sense standpoint? How does a guy not make his grades in D-1 when they are spoon fed the answers?
And Ezeli may be a better option than Melo, but he had his share of issues last year as well. That doesn’t mean I am only for good character guys, but Sund and this organization doesn’t reach out too far to try and revive questionable character guys.

OB, I also heard the Sund interview and as the boys were thanking him for coming in, Sund pops back, “When I’m asked, I come in”….he isn’t asked to do many interviews, is he? But for some reason, he is not much of a speaker….he struggles with his words and he is careful about every word he says.
Najeh, I agree that Sund finally has put together a bench that contributes. But we do have high draft picks in VRad, T-Mac, and Marvin, so they should be able to contribute.
If you gave an award to the bench POY, you know it would be Ivan. Without him, our bench is not the same. And I see the reason why Benson and Rolle was sent to find other opportunities.
Do we take Sund’s word that Teague played home games exlusively to get some playing time his rookie year?

Fab Melo was the reason why Syracuse didn’t win the National Title this year. He was the defensive rock that completed that team. The only game the Cuse lost this year, was when he did not play. If you’re looking for a backup center, especially with the impending loss of Zaza looming over this franchise after next season, Melo may be the way to go.
Grandad is right that Festus Ezeli may be the better prospect. He’s not as good defensively, but he’s much more polished offensively. The only drawback to both guys is that neither is what you’d consider a very good rebounder.
If I were to give an NBA comparison, Fab Melo would be more along the lines of a Theo Ratliff . . while Festus Ezeli would be closer to Nazr Mohammed. Take your pick.

Can someone please explain to me how the hell there are so many people saying al hordford is a bad player when he’s been hurt this whole year basically. Are some of you mentally slow? When he was there for the first 11 games we can easily say, or atleast i feel i can say they would ahve been contenders if he was here this whole season. I mean really they started off the first two weeks with 4 or 5 wire to wire wins and beat miami and chicago with him so where the hell do some of you get off saying if Al was here he’d be clashing with J-smooth. get real damn.

Hawks have to jump on the Celtics hard tonight. No Rondo or Allen…..Hawks have to take advantage of this. Getting homecourt for the first round is essential.

And Sund will never admit that some of the draft picks he traded away could’ve possibly helped us this year. It’s one thing to have an “old bench”. It’s another thing to have old guys who can play. Pargo, Green, and T-Mac shows flashes of being able to make major contributions in any given game.
But that still doesn’t mean that you simply dismiss young talent that could develop into being GREATER than the “old guys” you recycle on a yearly basis. Kenneth Faried would be better than ANY PLAYER we bring off the bench ( including Marvin ). Jordan Crawford, at times, would be a better option to play over Hinrich or Willie Green.
Keeping those two picks/guys in the fold, while ALSO adding “old guys” to the bench, would give you a healthy mix of old and young that will keep the team relevant. Sund will never admit that “old guys” like Vlad, Collins, Dampier, and Stackhouse probably shouldn’t even be on the team. Replace Jordan and Kenneth with ANY two of those 4 players, and the Hawks are better.
The true test for Sund is going to be this . . . what players do you re-sign from this bench?
Because the entire league has seen, or is going to see, that some of these guys can play. Someone will offer Ivan more than a vet minimum contract. Somebody might even offer him the full MLE. So what do you do then Sund, if that happens? Do you just let Ivan go, and roll the dice on some other “old guy”?
What about Pargo . . seeing that we’re going to lose Hinrich. Hell, do you bring Hinrich back? What about Willie Green? What about McGrady, if he proves to be a valuable commodity during the playoffs?
The fact is that while Rick Sund brought in 4 decent free agents that he could sign on the cheap, can he keep doing this on a yearly basis? At some point, the development of young talent has to take place. You just can’t keep trading away draft picks, just because you like the experience that the “old guys” bring to the table.
But we’ll see what Sund is really about, when people start throwing money at Ivan. History says that he doesn’t even put up a fight to keep him here.

“Boston is going to be a division champion. A non-division championship team with a record better than a division champion (or champions, plural) can be seeded higher — but just the single winningest non-division champion can do that under NBA rules. The Hawks are three games behind the No. 3 Pacers (40-22), who have won six straight but cannot catch their division-leading Bulls.”

They really don’t care where they play us. which is scary, but if I was in their shoes I wouldn’t care either. They are 2-0 against us already. ******************
Veteran teams that have won at a high level truly don’t care where they play. All I know that it may be too much to ask the Hawks to win 2 games in Boston, to advance to the next round, if we don’t have home court advantage. You know that Boston may get one game in ATL, so that would force us to win 2 games up there.
If Doc wants to rest everybody, go right ahead. Maybe we can jump on them real quick, and have a repeat of the Detroit game, in which our starters play preseason minutes, while the bench showcases what they do.
Then again, this may be a ploy by Doc Rivers to see just how to defend our bench. He knows how to defend JJ and Smith, but he may want a closer look at some of our reserves.
Drew talks about not “tipping his hand”. You’re facing Doc Rivers man. He already knows the “core” Hawks backwards and forwards. He coached T-Mac. All he needs to see, is more of guys like Pargo and Ivan.
Just dont mess around and lose this game tonight without any of Boston’s “core” playing. This fan base would go into a nuclear meltdown.
The Knicks game on Sunday is the game I’m looking forward to anyway. They’re playing for much more than what Boston is playing for right now.

I’m still convinced that LD didn’t want to show the Celtics any of his better last possession plays last week (or whenever we last played the Celtics). Instead, he went with a very generic iso-Joe play. Sounds like tonight’s game may not be as rugged as some of those games last night (dude from the Bucks acted like he had lost his mind).
Some of y’all are just plain old hating on Horford. Does Ivan bang harder than Dirk? Bosh? Aldridge? Yes, and not a single reasonable person would want Ivan over Dirk, Aldridge or Bosh (unless they are in an alley and need some help getting home out of that dark and dangerous alley). Birdman blocks shots better than Blake Griffin or Kevin Love, so what?
Give me a break.

If Woody was still coaching the Hawks, I would feel better about the Hawks defending home court. But under LD, we have been better on the road and worse at home. And if there is one team that can win anywhere, it’s Boston (plus they will have lots of fans in Phillips).
Therefore, I don’t think it matters that much whether or not the Hawks have home court advantage. We can lose either way.

Been looking over our cap situation lately. I really think Mr. Sund is going to try the ol’ Josh for a Lottery pick thing again this season – especially if Josh wants to be traded.
This would allow him to save about 9 mill this season from Josh’s salary.
This would also allow him to re-sign Ivan this off season, and ZaZa and Teague next off season.
And for some strange reason, given Sund’s fascination with big men in the past, I think he will focus on Zeller from UNC.
Then both our 1st picks this season will become RFA’s the year Horford and JJ’s contracts run out.
And for those who have not seen basketball chemistry between JJ and Josh this season, I have to disagree. They may not be McHale/Bird or something – but they definitely play well together, and have some chemistry.
PS – Anybody on here still want to say Josh has the lowest BB IQ on the team after the season he’s had? Stupid plays and J’s – Yes. Low BB IQ – No.
TMac has a high BB IQ also.
And for what it’s worth, I think Teague goes coast to coast fantastic with the rock. One of the best in the League.

If doc wants to do his Popovich impersonation and use his bench to embarrass our starters? Then Drew should counter that and start our bench as well.
Go ahead and allow doc to scout our bench players against
his bench players and call it a wash, since those won’t be the same players on either side to determine the outcome of a 7even game series anyway.
Historically, doc has always rested his old guys the week before the playoffs begin. This is old hat and certainly nothing new.
If Drew were smart, he should rest his starters as well and avoid any injuries to his crew. Consider this, what if some scrub takes down MVT or makes a dirty play to hurt Josh, who tweaked his knee in that same game where Zaza got hurt.
I’m just sayin’.

Truth,
In a perfect world, that is what you want their responsibilities to be. But just like how some PGs are scoring PGs, and not facilitating PGs, not all centers are defend the paint, block shots and rebound type centers. For example, Bargnani is the starting center for the Raptors. I don’t think his main responsibility is defending the paint, blocking shots and rebound.
AJ,
Co-sign. Has Al gotten soft? yes. but the way some bloggers talk about him makes him sound like he has already maxed out his potential, and is best suited as a bench guy. And so many people are loving Josh right now, whereas a couple years ago, they wanted him out of town.
If the Hawks continue to feature Josh, and he flames out in the playoffs (dude is 10-63 from 3 in the playoffs…16%), it will be interesting to see what the fan reaction is. Plus Josh has his issues against Boston too.

And all this Teague has to defer to JJ and Josh at crunch time stuff – JJ needs to realize that already Teague is not that far behind him. Teague loved crunch time and to be the man at Wake. But he, like JJ, is a quiet leader. But his game has inner dog in it, if he’s not too bludgeoned by JJ and Josh.
At Wake, he was the man clearly on the team. He just took over, and that’s what was expected. Here, he’s tried that and been beat down, and he didn’t know how to respond.
Good to see JJ and Paul Pierce on the front page of ESPN.com. National TV tonite folks. Same Sunday with the Knicks.
Back to Teague deferring to JJ in crunch time. I think Teague, if he’s got a favourable matchup, just needs to do it. Statistically:
Teague shooting 47.1%
JJ 44.3%
Teague 4.9 assists per game
JJ 3.9 assists per game
JJ a better FT shooter, at 86% to 75%
Teague is already a better guy grabbing steals – 1.6 per game to .82 for JJ. Teague is Top 10 last I checked
And Teague hilariously enough averages over twice as many blocks per game as JJ.
TO’s are about the same at 1.9 for JJ, and 2.0 for Teague.
Teague is quietly in his 1st first full season starting, become our 3rd leading scorer, and mr. durability – neither he or Josh have missed a game.
JJ is a better player. But the gulf is not as wide as it may seem to some. And I think Teague is a viable option to close out games, just like JJ and Josh.
Airball whiff against Boston notwithstanding.

You give Sund way too much credit for aggressive trading and creativity. The ASKG are in love with Josh and are not going to hand him over to a rebuild project draft pick, (an unknown commodity) for another possible Marvin Williams pick.
The first goal is to resign Josh, the fan favorite and get rid of the Marvin’s of the world. Josh is a player they can build around and it will take more than a maybe player to move him. Besides, IDK if Josh really wants to leave more so than be hugged and appreciated.
You see how reluctant Otis Smith was to trade Dwight and ended up getting him to waive his opt out clause, even though Dwight was severely unhappy with this teammates and coaches.
I predict Josh will be re-signed with that trade kicker in his contract, if not, he will be traded for several proven veteran players and not one “maybe” unproven lottery pick below #10. IMHO

“If one accepted your analogy on Horford and the qualities you think would make him as soft as a baby’s ass, then you’d have to say Wilt Chamberland was also as soft as a baby’s ass. It was widely known that he had an issue about hurting players, which is why he never got physical, and never retaliated in anyway when players were overly physical with him.”
If Al was averaging 50 points and 25 boards a game, he could be as soft as he wanted to be.
“I also remember when a world class boxer named Emile Griffith was destined to be one of the greatest boxers ever, until he beat Bennie THE KID Parrett so badly that he died in the ring. He was never the same once he lost his killer instinct. Would you call him a soft ass for that? ”
When did Al kill somebody?
“Night in and night out, no other Hawks player has to contend with anywhere close to the number of disadvantages that Horford does. He usually goes up against centers that are taller, bigger, stronger, or all of the above, on a routine basis. ”
Night in and night out, Josh has to go against power forwards who weigh more than him.
Night in and night out, Joe has to go against 2-guards who are quicker than him.
Night in and night out, Zaza has to go against centers who are more athletic than him.

Anyway, in the previous post, I wasn’t accusing Al of being soft. ‘` My comment was about how high 7′ with perceived talent/skill
are picked and that he would not fall so far in the draft order.`’
‘` Thabeet is an example that actually goes in favor of my argument `’
‘` certainly a GM on #5 to #10 which will take a flier on him `’
____________________________________________
Comment # 1:
This is a deep and talent laden draft.
Your comments are certainly true in most yrs.
However, not this yr.
Per Draft Xpress he is the 28th ranked eligble draftee.
he is dropping.
DX has five Centers/ Pwr Frwrd combos listed ahead of him.
Personally I see 6 going ahead of him with possibly as many as 9.
Comment # 2:
The Thabeet comparison is working against him.
Too many similarities.
Comment # 3:
I agree when workouts start – he could move up.
I think when workouts start – he is going to fall even further.
My opinion only.
I have seen him play.
notes:
Thabeet is / was better.
Thatbeet taller & longer.
Melo ill measure out @ slightly below 7 ft w/o shoes.
his wing-span is below most of the other Centers in this draft.
*[including those listed as combo C / F ]
Thabeet had a monstrous w-span compared to Melo
Melo is fairly slow and unathletic.
Melo is about to turn 22 yrs old already even though only a soph
Also he only avg 7.8 pts & 5.8 rebs per
AND;;; yes I saw him play more than a few times.
One other item;
he played a zone his whole life … not just at Syracuse;
but always a zone.
He will have to start from scratch learning defense.
Anyone who drafts him in the 1st round is *’`NUTS`’*
-S0-
Look for Sund to draft Fab Melo with our 1st pick !!!!!

I don’t care if Boston is worried about having home court or not. I know that I care. And, the Hawks care, too, I think. So, Hawks have to take advantage of this and rail those guys tonight.
Can’t help to worry about tonight, though. I remember the Heat game earlier in the year (the one where Barkley made his dipsh#t comments). No Wade, no LeBron and Hawks still lose. Also, remember playing the Celtics late in the ‘08 season. Hawks tie the game heading into the fourth quarter, Boston takes out their starters, Hawks lose to the Boston 2nd string in the 4th.
I think the other team’s stars not playing does not lock the Hawks into win. Sometimes it is such a downer that the guys just do not perform well. Can’t be the case tonight. Got to have this one.
By the way, I fully expect the Hawks to drop a game at home and then win one on the road in this upcoming series with the Celtics. So, that makes home court important.

“Because the entire league has seen, or is going to see, that some of these guys can play.
What about McGrady, if he proves to be a valuable commodity during the playoffs?”
Out of all the free agents the Hawks have, the two I would bring back first are Ivan and T-Mac. Everyone else is expendable and replaceable. That includes Pargo (who I like), Green, Kirk, Vlad, Stackhouse, Collins, and Dampier.
Going into next year, you have Teague, Joe, Josh, Al, Zaza under contract, with Marvin, T-Mac, Ivan, and two rookies coming off the bench. Could be better, but that is solid.
“The fact is that while Rick Sund brought in 4 decent free agents that he could sign on the cheap, can he keep doing this on a yearly basis? At some point, the development of young talent has to take place. You just can’t keep trading away draft picks, just because you like the experience that the “old guys” bring to the table.”
Co-sign.

But just like how some PGs are scoring PGs, and not facilitating PGs, not all centers are defend the paint, block shots and rebound type centers. For example, Bargnani is the starting center for the Raptors. I don’t think his main responsibility is defending the paint, blocking shots and rebound.” – OB

“Just rechecked standings. Best we can do is tie Indiana…not sure who has tiebreaker. ”
Hawks have the tiebreaker over Indiana, but Indiana’s magic number to clinch the 3 seed is 1. In other words, it’s not going to happen.
At this point, realistically, the Hawks will either play the Celtics with home court or without home court.
I’d rather have home court. I realize these aren’t Woody’s Hawks — which is a good thing — but the Hawks are still a .667 team at home and a .500 team on the road. The odds still favor them at home more than on the road.

Teague isn’t having an entire team trying to stop him. JJ is the reason why Teague is shooting so well, because it keeps Teague in one on one situations, or wide open for jumpshots.
That’s like saying that Teague is close to Derrick Rose, because Teague shoots .471 while Rose shoots .436
You’re talking about 2 different players who have totally different focuses on offense.

But before I go on;
Sund and Pendergraph are worthless as talent evaluators.
*[in my opinion]
Sund may pick Evan Fornier from france or
Furkan Aldemir from Turkey for all I know.
My post from the last blog waqs simply to compare & contrast
several post players who I think are and will be better than Melo.
When we pich @ # 20 or thereabouts
here are eight names our Hawks should be scouting strongly:
In no particular order:
* Andrew Nicholson
* Tony Wroten Jr.
* Kevin Murphy
* Henry Sims
* Kyle 0`Quinn
* Tomas Satoranski
* Scott Machado
____________________________________________
This is w/o having gone through the combine.
Some of these fellows may be available in the 2nd round.
There is another group I like as 2nd rounders for our pick there.
The above group is diverse:
example – I have kevin Murphy ranked ahead of John Jenkins.
*[that was a tough call]
Some on the above list:
I`m not certain about yet – exp. Tony Wroten
*[great talent / no right hand] – but barely 19 yrs old.

Give me Ratliff (Fab Melo).
In the context of potential superstars? No he’s not much. But in context of this team. I’ll take what he brings.
Fab Melo – lose a couple lbs. For his athleticism. Would start over JASON EFFIN COLLINS.
Alex Young – think he’ll shine and contribute to the 2nd unit right away in the NBA; Kobe type measurements and really like his length height and crossover
Renardo Sidney – says he’s losing weight; I don’t need a lecture-rebuttal on perils of immature black youth; has talent wingspan IQ and frame, does he utterly lack commitment; we’ll see; TBD
Chase Stanbeck – like his size and off ball ability. looks like Kevin Martin but bigger.

No, he isn’t as physical as his rookie year, but he doesn’t have to be because he does other things very well…..zaza and Ivan’s primary skill is being physical.

I hope Rick Sund does not draft a big like Fab Melo. We could not develop a sentence much less a player. We have Collins who can play 10 minutes and get 1 rebound as well as anyone.
I have no confidence that Rick and Larry will do anything of use during the season. If we had not sold our extra round pick, perhaps we could have packaged the 2nd rounders in order to move up in the 2nd a few picks where some like Fab could be selected and developed.
I hope that the cash was used to help build a toward a championship. NOT.

jason collins future is now.he can’t afford to sit back and do nothing when he gets playing time.maybe za za pachulia can view films of himself and learn how to be aggressive while he is out. a 6′11 man plays defense with his arms down to his side, doesn’t contest shots from 6′1 guards, and gets pushed around by everyone excepts kevin garnett. kirk hinrich and larry drew must be buddies because he truly can’t play or help the hawks but he’s still in the game during crunch time. collins acts scared and don’t care also. hope we get a gm who wants to win championships next year and before the draft. rick sund other wise, will trade away all of the picks for two hundred dollrs.

Will Bulls be able to re-sign Asik? Would we have enough to maybe bring him over here?
As far as draft day, I think Tony Wroten a supreme slasher with underrated playmaking ability is a solid choice, he has red flags but so does everyone.
Fab Melo is another solid pick as a 7 footer with a defensive mindset which is what we need. Could easily develop into another Tyson Chandler over the years, and could come in next year and put up Chandler rookie numbers easy.
2nd rounders who are intriguing – Darius Miller, Kim English, Will Barton, Henry Sims, Quincy Acy
Not going to list them all, but those guys are all hardworkers with winning mindsets and they could all contribute to this team.

I don’t even mind if the ESPN people were talking sh-t about the Hawks like Charles Barkley did in that early season Hawks-Heat game. But when there are two teams playing in front of you, try to talk about both teams. I don’t think that’s asking for too much. “Calm down, The Great Thunder team lost to the Hawks minus Joe, Al & Willie. It happens to all teams. And they were completely healthy.”
It happens to the Hawks more frequently, though. And this game is vital for determining home court in the first round, which clearly matters more to the Hawks than the Celtics.
The difference between the Hawks and Thunder is that Thunder fans would be genuinely surprised if they lost a game to a depleted team, whereas we pretty much expect it. Losing (or squeaking by) in games like this is the Hawks’ identity, and it needs to change.

Look, this has been a pathetic game by the Hawks. We know that. But this game is no indication of what the series with the Celtics will be like. The Hawks are a good defensive team and the Celtics have had trouble scoring against them when they were at “full strength.” The Hawks just don’t have the motivation tonight, Avery Bradley’s had a career night, and they’ve had way more turnovers than they typically have, which has led to a lot of points. The guards other than JJ have done nothing, and neither has the bench. They are fortunate if the win this one.

This game has not been typical for the Hawks. The turnovers had nothing to do with great Boston D, but they were careless. Usually the Hawks don’t turn the ball over like this. Why have they been so careless with the ball? They don’t have enough respect for the Celtics players on the court. That’s their fault, but it won’t be a problem in the playoffs.

You’re living in the past. It’s 2012 and Amare is a shell of his former self, especially on defense. I wasn’t talking about points either.

Hawks stink. Easy out in 1st round. Maybe Josh Smith will learn to respect the Celtics 3rd string players that just gave the Hawks a fight

Same as it was during the regular season. It will be an ugly, defensive duel that will be determined by the last shot.

Home court will change that. I expect it to go 6-7 games though. I’m not a homer, yet they have a good chance of winning it. I say about 50-50.

How do the Celtics have less to play for? Home court advantage is equally important to both teams. If you don’t believe that, check out the playoff records for teams playing on their home court.

“The bottom line is that they struggled against a depleted Boston team that has even less to gain with a victory.”
Struggle would imply that they’re trying. Also, they could gain home court easier if they won.
Anyways, I’m done arguing a moot point. They won. They will demolish the Knicks on Sunday.

Doc Rivers is hoping the Hawks players think like some of you “FANS”…
The Hawks sometimes play down to their competition, so why are surprised.
Doc is resting his team for the Hawks, because he in NERVOUS…..He watched the previous 2 games and knows this will be a WAR…..This is just a MENTAL TRICK he is trying to play and some of you got pulled in..
