Raptors at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread

  • Jason Collins will replace Zaza Pachulia (foot) in the starting lineup. Tracy McGrady (rest) will not play. For Toronto, Amir Johnson (ill) is questionable and Andrea Bargnani (calf), Jerryd Bayless (oblique) and Jose Calderon (eye) are not with the team.
  • Zaza won’t travel to Toronto for tomorrow’s game. He said he’s still not sure if he will be able to play Wednesday: “It’s better. I can walk without a limp. I’m getting treatment. It’s still a little bit swollen. It could be worse. I was really worried because most of the time I’ve seen a lot of other guys have torn knee, ligaments. Thank God it’s just strained foot. The bad thing is once you are getting close to the playoffs you want to be rolling. Hopefully it doesn’t take me too long.”
  • Joe Johnson on setting out practice yesterday and getting treatment: “I was just trying to do the necessary things to keep my body feeling good and just staying on top of this knee. That’s about it. I feel good. This season has worn a lot of people down, not just physically but mentally as well. To get somewhat of a break, when you have a day or two between games, you try to cherish them and really take that time off. I think the best thing for the body at some point is rest more than anything. These little ‘nick-knacks’ and injuries we always get, you have to play through them unless it’s something serious. But you have to rest and let these wounds heal up a little bit.”
  • Larry Drew has said he wants to get some bench players more minutes over the final few games. Which guys does he mean? “I’d like to give Willie [Green] more,” he said. “Certainly would like to give Vladimir [Radmanovic] more. I would like to get [Jannero] Pargo more, too, [after] that little stint he was out. He looks like he is starting to get back in a rhythm. I’d like to get Twin more. I would love to get [Erick Dampier] out there some more. And then probably Ivan [Johnson].”
  • Mitch Lawrence of the Daily News reports the Hawks have offered Rick Sund a “deal to stay” but he told the team’s owners he will decide after the season if he wants to continue as GM. Hawks co-owner Michael Gearon Jr. has said any contract talks for Sund would happen after the season.

Starting Twin instead of Ivan is stupid, but it shouldn’t hurt against this team. Of course, we all know how that goes with the Hawks.

Of course the DASG offered Sund an extension. Of course they did.

“Josh needs to be around the rim on the defensive end, so we need someone at the SF position that can and will rebound. Marvin does that. ”
———–
———–
Josh around the rim at SF. Not pictured: Marvin.

***********************

You didn’t show the play about 2 minutes earlier in which Josh got beat on the same switch by Rose, but that’s not even the point.

The point is that without Al Horford, Josh Smith is our best all around rebounder and he’s always our best rim defender. To make sure he stays active on the boards, you play him at PF.

The clip your showed is from Game 4 of the Chicago – ATL series. In that game, Josh had a MONSTER game in which he almost had a triple-double, while grabbing 16 rebounds. When he played SF, here were his numbers:

At SF:

18 minutes . . 2 – 6 FG ( 1 – 1 FT ) . . . 5 pts . . 3 rebs . . 3 asst . . 1 blk

When he played PF, this is what he did:

26 minutes . . 6 – 16 FG ( 6 – 8 FT ) . . 18 pts ( 11 in the 4th quarter ) . . 13 rebs . . 5 asst . . 1 blk

Instead of trying your best to paint a picture in which you want Josh Smith to play SF, how about posting an ENTIRE SEGMENT of a game in which he plays SF, and compare it to when he plays PF.

Here is that same game, showing Josh in the 4th quarter playing almost exclusively around the rim at PF. And unlike what you do, it won’t just be one play. He played exactly how he should always play in this quarter. If he did this all the time, there would be no disputing his All-Star status.

Playoff Excellence from Josh Smith

For Rusty who thinks I admire LD.

Starting Collins is the dang dunbest thang I`ve heard of yet.

As I`ve argued in the past;
players play, [not positions] postions don`t play the game.
putting Collins in for Zaza simply because he`s a [5];
is imperceptive.

If he wishes to play V-Rad more then do so.
V-Rad still has one of the highest (+/-) ratios on the team
when aligned with the starters.

It would suit me fine if Collins and Damp
wore a suit for the remainder of the yr.

So there;
my LD bashing for the moment.

Guessing DEBO’s going to be in the dog house for awhile, Collins offers nothing but 6 fouls and really shouldn’t be in the league, but hopefully Zsa Zsa can get back for the last 5 at Phillips.

Would be nice to have Al back coming off the bench not only for the playoffs but next season also, that way SMOOVE can stay at the 4 & Joe at the 3. Al & Marv as your sixth & seventh.

Grandad . . it’s just that Collins is only good for defending centers who have the half court offense going through them. In just about every other aspect of basketball ( besides the “great” screens he sets in the half court on offense ), he’s a garbage player.

So tonight, who is he matched up against?

Aaron Gray

Now Gray probably won’t have a single play ran for him on the offensive end. But as a backup center, he’s a borderline DOMINANT rebounder ( 20.5% total rebound rate . . . for comparison, Zaza leads the Hawks with a 16.3% total rebound rate ).

Keep an eye on Gray, and see how many rebounds he gets when Collins is guarding him. And what will be worse, is that this guy may actually grab some offensive rebounds and put it back in the hole, all because Collins can’t get a damn rebound.

Don’t be GARBAGE tonight Collins

ASKG don’t want to chance letting a “yes” man go. Those types are hard to replace. I saw Larry Brown interviewed yesterday and said he is itching to get back to coaching and/or upper management for a basketball org.

Apparently he was offered a college position at coaching, but from his demeanor it seems he would do something at the pro level. He is NO “yes” man however.

Two more LD criticisms:

(1) By starting Collins … it sends the message;
Toronto is not to be respected.
What happened;
our Hawks are playing -down- to a severely undermanned opponent.

(2) LD`s claim:
Josh has the highest basketball IQ on the team.
If so, the rest of the team is purely ignorant.
The last play before the half … is not the play
of an intelligent B-ball player.
It was, however, an incredibly stupid play.

northcyde

DawgNole . . I would be concerned if this were the Celtics we were down to like this. But not the Raptors. The Hawks are an 8 – 0 run from getting right back in the game. The 3rd quarter is usually a bad quarter for the Hawks. But when they’re behind, they’re more focused and play better. Don’t be surprised if we have a 3 point lead by the end of the quarter.

I swear the “fans” in here who are really just apologists for individual players make me laugh.

They aren’t going anywhere because the collective IQ is mayonnaise and their best players have no heart.

Get mad all you want but you will see what I mean when they’re eliminated in a couple weeks.

In fact let’s take it a step further

Josh: 11/20 (55% FG), 4/7 FT, 26 pts, 8 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 2 blk, 3 TO
The rest of the starters COMBINED: 4/19 (21% FG), 3/4 FT, 12 pts, 5 reb, 9 ast, 1 stl, 0 blk, 2 TO

The remaining 4 starters combined for a line that looks like what Brandon Jennings would put up on a bad day. And yet people want to blame Josh. Hmm.

Ok guys. The Hawks probably will get one back from the Raptors on tomorrow. Why? Because today is home Sunday and they ate dinner. Period. That’s what happens when you eat dinner early on Sunday, and especially before a 6pm game Big-Momma’s biscuits, mashed potatoes w/gray, fried chicken, collards and coleslaw and corn on the cobb, baked beans, etc. I just woke up from a nap myself after eating some of those same foods, minus the fried chicken (I like mine grilled), and the eating of Sunday dinner on Sunday gets your eyeballs rolling to the back of the noggin after you done nodded out. So guys, give the Hawks another shot-Monday night.

I agree with Najeh. Tonight is NOT the night to be nit picking at Josh. When your starting backcourt gets outscored 33 – 4 . . and Arn Anderson completely outplays JJ . . those are the people to blame for this lackluster effort.

“Dagger in the coffin.” LOL

I prefer the Hawks finish 5th for the higher draft pick. Get Fab Melo as a project big. That’s the only way we can afford a big man with foot speed and agility. Hire a big man coach and let van Exel roll on out. Stack can take over his spot on the second row.

Stack may even be a decent assistant coach to take over for Drew at the end of his next extension. Yawl know it’s coming right?

This is the NBA ,a game of streaks. I know the first unit wasn’t playing well &the secon unit wasn’t playing much better but in a must game why would the coach play the second unit the whole last quarter . This seems like throwing the towel in way to early,shows a complete lack of confidence for your first unit. LD has often done this this season.

Does JT just decide he don’t want to shoot shots this game,we all know he is capable of getting shots anywhere he wants to on the court,any time he wants to. There has to be a logical answer for this.some one has to ask him this questio. He will probably be afraid to tell the truth.

I normally give JJ a hard time for not showing up against good teams. But he did not show up tonight either. 2-12, including 1-6 from 3. Last 5 games, JJ is 7-28 (25%) from 3.

I wont blame Collins, because everybody (except LD) knows he is terrible. I would have started Dampier. But Kirk, Teague, and JJ. Just terrible tonight. Josh and Ivan did what they could, but could not overcome the terrible play of the starters, and a couple bench players.

Hopefully we will regroup and win tomorrow’s game.

The only person I ever heard step to the mike and take responsibility for a loss was Teague on the recent night when he amassed 7even turns to go with his 7even assists.

Other than him, I never heard any one step up to lead, certainly not Joe or Drew. The players point fingers because they take on the soft personality of their coach.

Josh has called Drew and other for finger pointing in the past. Go get Larry Brown as GM/Coach and you can cvhange these loser’s mentality quick!

But they will stand pat forever and do nada!

Obviously, the Hawks could have played better tonight, and if they would have, they may very well have won, but this loss is not just the result of poor or lacking effort. Make no mistake about it, this was not just a coincidence. The Hawks struggle against good defensive teams, and Toronto actually played very solid defense tonight. In some cases, the Hawks can afford to go through the motions against struggling teams and then just flip the switch and pull the game out, but that doesn’t work against the raptors, since they actually attempt to play consistent defense on a regular basis. They may not all have success with that, and their offense can really struggle, but they do give a lot of effort on defense, and it showed tonight. The Hawks underestimated them and thought they could get away with that, and the Raptors made the Hawks look like an inferior team.
